2024-12-13 22:48:01 +0000 UTCSo here's what I think I've figured out about Belos and Caleb from a few watches. A lot of this is speculation, but I do think there's small details in the show to support it all. Belos and Caleb were very close as kids (Caleb seems to have been the leader/big brother, so Belos probably either looked up to him or mildly resented not being in charge). They also lived during the era where there was a lot of hatred towards witches/magic. Belos found out that Caleb was dating an actual real witch, freaked out, and attacked them. They fled into the demon realm, he followed. He ultimately killed them both, though idk how long that took. There's a lot of hints that Flapjack was originally the witch (Evelyn)'s talisman (remember, he was an adopted palisman, so he'd previously had a witch). The biggest is that Belos is extra enraged to see Flapjack and when he mortally wounds him says, "goodbye, Evelyn." I think he felt hurt and betrayed by his brother and it only further spurred his hatred of witch/demon kind. When he couldn't get back to the human realm right away, he started coming up with plans to get revenge on the demon realm by basically wiping everyone out and triumphantly returning to the human realm. He thought he could "fix" Caleb if he only hadn't been corrupted by Evelyn, which is why he started making grimwalkers - because he still loved Caleb, but ultimately didn't understand him. All the grimwalkers ended up being horrified by what Belos was doing, like Hunter was, and turned against him. (He says at one point, "it hurts EVERY TIME he CHOOSES to betray me" and to me there seems like real emotion in that.) He really thinks the whole reason things went bad between them was because of witches. The whole coven system was designed to eventually wipe out all witches simultaneously with the day of unity. At that point he'd found the collector and had already been extending his life with glyphs all over his body and by consuming palismen (seen when Luz first meets him as Philip). He becomes desperate and delusional about what this endgame looks like, but ultimately he wants to kill all witches and return to the human realm with a copy of his brother who is never influenced by witches so they can go back to how things were before Caleb fell for Evelyn. Basically, I think he had genuine love for Caleb, but his hatred for witches was stronger. I have no evidence at all for this, but I think Caleb died by taking a knife meant for Evelyn, and Belos never actually meant to kill him. Since he didn't want to accept responsibility for his death, he just used it to fuel his hatred for witches and blamed Evelyn, whom he probably promptly killed (though it's possible she actually escaped and lived - maybe Eda is even related to her given the bird motif and the names sounding similar, plus she found the door to the human realm on her parents' land - maybe that was how Evelyn got to the human realm in the first place. Perhaps Evelyn buried it there in her grief since she didn't have Caleb's body to bury). Also a small unrelated Easter egg I noticed on my second watch of the series - during the dream sequence where Eda finally accepted the Owl Beast and first got her harpy form, during the b&w sequence, you get a montage of basically how the owl curse was made. The Owl Beast was just living its life and doing its thing, then the Archivists (the Collector's relatives) captured it and put it or transformed into into a scroll. That got put in a bottle and tossed into the ocean, it washed up, some scavenger found it and put it in a cart of similar paraphernalia to sell. And presumably Lillith bought it off them or someone they sold it to. By the time it was used on Eda, it had been trapped for probably centuries, was frightened and angry, and didn't trust anything vaguely Archivist-shaped, which includes witches. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to pivot on some of this backstory when the show was cut. For a while, we never saw Luz's dad's face, so maybe the original plan was for her to be a descendant of Caleb or even have Belos be her father. There's a lot of random family photos where you just barely can't see his face and they never use his name until after the point in the series where they knew they were being cut.
