Lyr enters Dove’s room on ship

L: we’re going on a supply run. Admiral says you’re coming with.

D: Does she just want a repeat of the last excursion?

L: (holds up jar of dye) she already thought of that, too

D: (stands) i will not -

L: oh, you don’t have to. but you’re coming with regardless, and we won’t rescue you from the mob this time. Your choice.

D: oh, but it’s not a choice, is it

L: sound familiar? 

D: as if you have any claim to the moral high ground

L: oh, we’re both at rock bottom together, I’m sure. But at least I’m trying to wrestle my way out of it.

(Leaves. Dove looks at pot of dye)

(Lyr and girls dressed for shore, waiting on deck. Girl with black wings approaches.)

Kieera: ok, what kind of sick game is this.

Lyr: Admiral’s orders. And it’s the only dye aboard since it’s used for night missions.

kerwick: there’s a moral dilemma here, i’m sure of it.

erka: that’s fucked up, man.

ker: well, all we can hope is that the Admiral knows what she’s doing. Come on, we’re late already. 

(at market)

erka: are you sure no ones gonna recognise us?

ker: hundreds of travellers pass by every day, we’re just five more faces in that stream.

(Lyr shoves basket at dove) L: carry this. 

(girls walk ahead. shop keeper calls out to dove)

SK: you there - care to try a sample?

D: m-me?

SK: come, come. The freshest mangos you’ve had, guaranteed.

D: i - uh - ok - 

(kids runs by and bumps into her so apples fall from the basket. kid picks them up and hands them to her, revealing a hybrid eye)

hybrid: sorry Miss, here.

D: I - I - 

H: Miss?

(a horse and cart barrel down the street, towards the kid. is about to be run over when Dove snatches him back)

SK: (yelling at the driver) of all the careless - 

(people gather around, clapping and thanking her. she panics and runs. the girls find her hiding)

D: w-what was that??

E: what, when they were thanking you for saving that kid?

D: thanking…?

kieera: why am i not surprised no ones ever thanked you before. 

kerwik: c’mon, we’ve still got things to get.

(others walk off, lyr waits for dove)

D: they…think I’m a Crow, right? that’s why they were kind to me here?

L: They were kind to you because you helped someone. 

D: won’t they…hate me, if they find out im lying to them?

L: they already hate you. Maybe this is your chance to let people see who you actually are first, before passing judgment. I’m sure that’s what the Admiral was aiming for, anyway.

D: I…would like to try that.

L: (walks away) do whatever you want. 

D: (to herself) ..I helped a Hybrid…and people thanked me for it. People thanked me. I helped.

Ree’s brothers walking halls of the Capitol. 

Adol: remind me again, Philo, how it is you’ve managed to acquire a sub-council seat in such a small amount of time.

P: because, dear brother, I have discipline, charisma, and ambition, all of which you lack.

A: I resent that. I’ve got far more charisma than you. 

Uri: (snorts)

A: shut it

P: I’m fulfilling father’s wishes, in any case.

A: please, we all know they were your own wishes, planted in Father’s head, as usual.

P: is it my fault it’s so easily done?

A: that tongue of yours is real slimy, you know that? And what will you do when the Council discovers your little side-hustle? I doubt you’ll be seen in such a favorable light then.

P: you wound me, my only wish is to serve them. (To Uri) what news of our latest shipment, anyway?

U: On schedule, should be just off shore in a few days.

P: good. (sees farrah’s parents walk by) Those Feldpasser’s are getting bold, for a clan so opposed to the Council.

A: if the news is true, why wouldn’t they be? 

P: The Crow King, found at last. Of course our sister had something to do with it. She did say she’d be the one to find him. I’m glad she managed it, in the end. Although I doubt our parents will have similar sentiments.

A: and what will we do when they make it back here, landing straight into the arms of those bloodthirsty Councillors?

P: What we’ve been taught to do. Protect our family at all costs, and dispose of those who get in our way. She’s returning earlier than expected, but I’ve been working hard, and things won’t go the way they did last time if I have a say in it.
