Yeah, some things are callbacks, other things are jokes you won't get unless you know a lot about dragonball. It's one of those shows where the more you know about dragonball the more of the jokes you get. Like back when Trunks Met Goku and accidentally called him Sun Wukong that was a reference to the fact that Goku was based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the west, and Toriyama just took Sun Wukong's name and translated it into japanese.
