To answer your question of why Gero want's revenge the abridged answers it later, but it's a reference you probably won't get completely until watching dragonball. It's never really explained that deeply in the actual series, just hates Goku cause he defeated the Red Ribbion army and I guess he lost his job with them cause of that, but it's never explained any deeper than that in the series proper. Probably meant to be lore we would have learned about if Toriyama's editor didn't give him shit about the android designs, as 19 and 20 were going to be the main villains of the android saga.
