perig and major sitting on cots in cave in new clothes. perig putting boots on.

P: sure was nice of them to finally give us some new clothes. i was pretty sure those old ones were like fused to my skin at this point.

M: merciful indeed.

perig putting last boot on, knife falls out. major stares.

P: oop

M: how long have you had that?! (you were drinking out of those, too)

P: like…the whole time? those vultures really werent thorough.

M: you mean we couldve escaped months ago?

P: please, we weren’t gonna be able to fight our way through all those vultures with just a knife between us. and cepni had a gun, which generally beats a knife.

M: but it was two of us with combat training against her, we’re literally taught how to disarm someone with our bare hands. if we’d had our hands free, we could’ve -

P: i kinda just…wanted to see where we’d end up, you know? if it’d gotten really bad then yeah we could’ve gotten out, but there was something bigger going on and i wanted to see what it was.

M: that’s treason, perig. we have a duty to report this sort of operation back to the Director -

P: see, i don’t think we do. when the government clearly doesn’t have the population’s best interest in mind, why should we be loyal to them? why should we trust something thats failing everyone?

M: they’ve got to you, i see.

P: nah, Major. they’ve just cleared some things up for me.

lulu enters with food.

L: they’ve finally let me help around the base! I can’t believe the stuff they’ve got going on.

P: it’s been ages since i’ve had your cooking!

L: dont get too excited, things are pretty limited here.

P: you somehow still manage to make everything taste better than it should, regardless.

l: (blushes)

M: whats cepni up to?

L: she’s been holed up in central command with the commissioner all morning. i think they must’ve gotten some kind of news.

P: probably not good news.

M: do you think you could -

L: are you joking? they finally trust me enough to let me roam around and help out, im not gonna betray them to you.

M: they’ve let you go because you’re not a threat, and they need hands to do grunt work.

P: what the fuck, maj

L: (indignant) even so, id rather be useful than just a leech.

M: i wouldnt drain their resources if they freed me.

L: you know they cant do that.

M: then it’s a moot point, isnt it -

cepni and lars walk in.

Lars: congrats Major, Hu’s been arrested, that’s one win for your lot.

P: Hu was working for you, too?? he’s way too boring to be in a Resistance

Lars: it’s always the boring ones who’re the most interesting. regardless, it puts us in a bit of a pickle.

M: because you have no more operatives inside The Roost?

LA: oh, we have an operative. at least, we have someone there who’s aware of us and managed to weasel her way in thanks to Hu. Unfortunately, the school is where the director spends most of her time, which means due to the destruction of most of my cameras, we need someone else on the inside. or, at least, someone to get a message to the person in there with instructions.

M: why’re you telling me this

C: because I might be going back to The Roost to do it. There was something in the news this morning that we suspect is linked to the school’s new training regime. we need to monitor it from the inside. if that happens, Lars here will be looking after you lot.

cep: come lulu, we’ve got another job for you.

all walk out of cave.

M: you keep that knife on you, we may need it sooner than later.

P: let’s just play it by ear. i want to see what happens next.

student: did you see the news from the director’s charity ball last night?

S2: about that weird dove shit theyre planning on doing with those crows from Reamer’s wedding? pretty sure everyone’s seen it at this point

s1: you dont think it has something to do with all these extra drills we’ve all been doing, do ya?

s2: who knows, man.

walk off. lyr sweating

L: (Hu’s gone. I’m the only one who knows about the resistance in this school. are the extra drills to do with the event? do the resistance even know we’re doing them? i need to…tell them somehow. wait, no i dont? im not in the resistance. I don’t even know what theyre resisting aside from the government in general i think? what does it matter to me what the government’s doing? I’m just gonna do what I’m told when I’m told, the same as everyone here. if those doves are involved, though…)

approaches seat next to her in classroom.

E: you can’t sit here.

L: seriously? this is my assigned seat.  it’s been days, what can I do to get you to at least tolerate my presence?

E: right the wrong you committed.

L: what - how could i even -

E: figure it out.

lyr goes to back of classroom, angry.

both in beds in dorm room, lyr staring at back of erkas head. gets up and starts getting dressed.

E: (annoyed) where are you going

L: to write the wrong i committed.

E: don’t be stupid, it’s the middle of the night -

L: we’re not on lockdown anymore, noone will catch me. I’ve already lost a friendship, i’m not losing you as well.

E: look, i only said that because I was disgusted and angry at you -

L: exactly. if fixing my mistakes is what’ll get you to stop hating me, then so be it.

E: you should want to fix your mistakes anyway, not because of me....what’re you gonna do?

L: I need to contact the resistance. i need to know what they’re doing, and i have info to tell them. what they do with that info is up to them, but i feel partly responsible for hu getting arrested so i think i should at least do this. and aside from trying to contact him in jail, the only other person who i know for sure is in it is farrah, so it’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

E: and how’re you gonna find farrah, if shes still alive even?

L: i’m going to ask the last people that mightve seen her. the doves.

E:...I’m coming with you. i don’t forgive you, but im not letting you go there alone.

L: you dont -

E: im coming.
