When the novel starts Gabby doesn't know the meaning of the word bondage, and I needed an expression that doesn't reveal to Gabby its meaning directly. I found it here https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/be-in-bondage-to The word slave is reserved for a more committed relationship, like the one between Julia and Emily.
