Hey, we will take the piss out of the welsh to the end of day, but if an american starts, we will step in front and be like "Woah, wind your neck in yank, you havent earned the right or our respect to make fun of our welsh cousins, we can say what we want, but you do not."

I'd say about 70% of the jokes in Gavin and Stacey are cultural and go way over Boomers head. I'm not sure why people recommend shows like this to you. Some of the jokes are so inherently cultural and subtle that they even go over British heads. Like in this episode, one of the funniest things is Nes going down the aisle to Angry Anderson's "Suddenly" which is a throwback to Kylie and Jason's wedding in hit Aussie soap Neigbours from 1986. A mssive thing in the UK at that time. That's a real throwback but brilliant also.

And it's important to keep in mind that this episode - s3 ep 6 - aired in January 2010; that was the finale... until the return in 2019 with the Christmas special (long wait) and then the actual final return in Xmas 2024. So a long, long wait, twice over, and it always delivers. 9, 10 years between this and the 2019 special, and then another 5 years... 'twas a huge wait, huge excitement in the UK for both specials.

I had to unsub from ETS21 because I was finding Spencer increasingly irritating to watch. Like you say he often missed the mark completely, but it was the howling fake laughter at things he thought he was expected to laugh at that I couldn't listen to any more.
Daniel is an absolutely sound bloke though, always enjoyed his contribution to the channel.

Boomer, when Smithy says, “I’m done!” then he and Gavin say, “Romeo done!”
This is a reference to a British rapper called Romeo, who was part of a rap group called So Solid Crew, who had a No. 1 single called “21 Seconds,” where various rappers do verses, and when Romeo finishes his verse, he says, “Romeo done!”

Boomer, after the specials there was a cracking documentary all about the show. Unprecedented access with James and Ruth, interviews with fans and lots of behind the scenes stuff. Also features a wee clip of the infamous fishing trip. Well worth a watch if someone can get you that sent over to you.

The two specials were a big deal in the UK. Series 3 ended in 2009, and the next special was 10 years later in 2019. People had assumed the show finished at series 3. Then we had to wait another 5 years again for the finale. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Far fewer channels back then, too!
It could even be argued with expanded terrestrial, subscription services, Youtube, etc that wasn't around during OFAH, Gavin and Stacey pulling in numbers like that is more of an achievement!

Haha, absolutely - that’s why it’s so hard to get it right, it’s not necessarily logical and you just have to be immersed in it to get it like much of culture - or you have to particularly perceptive of the dynamics which good comedians naturally do very well. Completely agree it can be very unfair.

I love how you're opening up so many levels regarding regionalism, nationalism and group identity. We tend to subconsciously place rules on what's acceptable banter, dependent on how it relates to the complex nature of group identity against "outsiders". It can be quite unfairly hypocritical in nature, but I think it positively shows that despite our differences, brothers can stick together.

I think they just got bored of it, which is fair enough. I get the impression that they wanted the channel to go in the direction of celebrating American culture, but got swept up in the whole "react to British things" trend. Probably good for channel growth initially, but it never really felt like what they want to achieve.

Not at all, I won’t get on my soapbox about how the American Revolution was a very British Revolution - and really the American view is missing a lot of that context. My comment was more on the distance of the relationship, not about any level of relationship. I include kiwis because so many kiwis are first generation and essentially are Brits, they’re just not as typically loud or brash as Aussies - Canadians can give it too, they have a polite front but they’re not soft. They’re culturally a hybrid of Americans and Brits really though so not in the same league as Aussies or even Kiwis. And of course there’s Québécois culture which it’s its own thing, and coincidentally what I wrote my thesis on.
Yeah I was just about to add an additional line agreeing with you about banter from outsiders, if it’s done right and they really understand the culture, as I wasn’t really referring to that - more the shift from regionalism to group identity in the face of genuine insult and attack, eg a Lancastrian and Yorkshireman banter until a southerner picks a fight and then they’re northerners; said northerners and southerners banter until a Scot picks a fight and then they’re English; the Scots and the English banter until an Italian picks a fight and then they’re British. And so on…

From my perception, aside from our differences over things like gun control, I don't think historically any Brit has a real problem with Americans. None of us actually mind that America gained independence from Britain, so we have no real hate on that side. So when an American goes hard on the insults, we take it more personally because we feel that our third cousin that we have a good relationship with, is trying to make us feel bad.
Canadians and New Zealanders are way too polite to even bother with the whole banter thing. Aussies are essentially Brits with a different accent and a thicker amount of sarcasm, so it's like being insulted by our own.
I've also noticed that Brits are generally fine with outsiders insulting us, if they've had some experience of our idiosyncrasies. American comedian Doug Stanhope and German comedian Henning Wehn are two good examples. Both of them are smart enough to pick apart some of our behaviour, without resorting to basic lazy stereotypes.

I used to watch embrace the suck21 but don't now.Daniel I like and thought he was quite perceptive. Spencer frequently imo got the wrong end of the stick and after some time watching British content seemed no nearer understanding us nor seemingly that bothered about doing so. It was about his own preconceived ideas, I think. Honestly I'm sure he's a likeable enough bloke but far from the sharpest tack in the box, nor a great comedian.
None of these observations I've made about him, whether right or wrong, apply to King and Queen Boomer and I'm more than happy continuing to watch your good channel.

You’re spot on with the brothers and sisters analogy. We banter with each other but as soon as an outsider picks on us we’re one and the same.
Aussies and Kiwis are first cousins (and there’s still loads of first generation Kiwis and Aussies originally from the UK - overall we absolutely have the closest relationship with them, they’re still close family either way as they have the closest mindset and humour to us).
Canadians are second cousins and Americans are third cousins.

Just an idea King Boomer, but the specials were Christmas Specials, I definitely remember the first special in 2019 being set at Christmas, the one just on was not set at Christmas I don't think, but may be too long a wait and I know you haven't done any like Halloween or Christmas specials, aside Home Alone, from what I can remember! May be wrong!! but perhaps they would be good to save as a double over Christmas time, maybe a week apart! Just an idea 😇

He did a bit to camera saying how the channel can't get rid of us Brits, and threw in some banter which came out really negatively, when I think he was just trying to do a bit of British sarcasm. It seems to have lost them a few subs.
I'm pretty sure his recent trip to the UK gave him the idea that he could get away with it, but it's always a fine line to walk when it comes to throwing about banter.
I feel bad for him that it backfired, but he didn't do himself any favours by telling anyone that complained that they were "butthurt" and "Can't take a joke". It was a masterclass in how not to run a Youtube channel. Bless him!
Edit: Just to add, I don't want to make this anything negative about Spencer. It was just my point of view on why his banter hit differently than when our countries do it.

Something tells me your comment regarding insults between countries is slightly related to Spencer from Embrace the Suck's recent vid that insulted the Brits? (If I'm incorrect, I apologise).
My personal take on it. Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland have all had issues with each other over the years/centuries. We are closely tied both culturally and historically, so it's a difficult relationship.
For us to throw around a bit of banter with someone from another of those countries, you either have to be on friendly terms with them, or it has to be gentle ribbing without getting too deeply into the political side (unless you want to be xenophobic).
Being part of that complicated relationship does give us some allowance, because we know we are related by that troubled history. It's a way of dealing with our differences, and getting past those troubles through humour.
Americans are related to us, but you're not directly part of the troubles between our nations, so having an American assume they can freely join in on the banter without being part of that history, just feels like throwing insults without earning that right.
We do love outsiders ribbing us, but there's a fine line between lighthearted banter, and just plain insults that aren't earned by that historical context. It's a difficult thing to judge.
Aussies also get a free pass with England, because of our shared history, and mainly because they're pretty much the experts in anti English banter (outside of the UK and Ireland), but everywhere else it just comes across negatively.
I hope that explains it a little bit. Would be happy for chat to correct me if I'm way off the mark. Just my take on it.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Little bit of context to earlier jokes for you here KB, In an earlier episode Nessa talks about when she dated John Prescott (A former British Labour MP and deputy Prime Minister to Tony Blair) and how when they broke up he took it badly and punched a civilian (When Labour were in power in the late 90's/2000's John punched a man who threw an egg at him in the street in front of the media camera)
At 23 mins into this episode, after Pam and Mick talk to dave, the man who shakes Daves hand is John Prescott! He passed away in November 2024, he was definitely titan of British politics and a very well known person here.
