The Thick Of It S4 Ep5 REACTION!

Very different type of episode but still glorious.

The Thick Of It S4 Ep5 REACTION!

You often seem to come to the correct conclusions about things in this show (and others like Derry Girls), but keep doubting yourself!

Will

Yeah it definitely seems to be more analogous to The Leveson Inquiry.

Luke Barton

I think a good comparison would be the Leveson enquiry which would have taken place shortly before this. I recall Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson royally screwing up their answers and incriminating themselves and there's also the parallel with Coulson being charged with perjury. Also Alistair Campbell was a witness in that enquiry who Malcolm Tucker is partly based on.

I recall binging this before people binged things, and it peaks beautifully at the inquiry... I have often wondered what Malcolm says as he exits the inquiry - quite oddly by walking out through the front - he mutters something to the 4 members and it's deliberately hard to work out... After years of reading and trying to find out, apparently he says "it started and ended with a Twix" or words to that effect, hinting at the leaks against The Baroness... Anyone have any other thoughts...? Personally Episode 5 is actually really good, the entire second half is basically shouting...

Michael

You should try watch some of the footage of the Covid enquiry on UK when they are reading out Dom Cummings WhatsApp’s… makes tucker look like a baby

it's a shame you missed the last one and missed glens rant but i know it's coming!!! dude it's beena pleasure watching this through here. when it's over i'll probly restart it all. haha. you're going to love the one you missed and the next one too!!!

James West

One little detail I love in this episode is Malcoms secretary sitting in the background looking increasingly upset as Malcom is taken down

Rach

Nice

Harry Brett (Chef)

Completely agree! Great comment 🙌

I don't know if you have seen footage of UK public inquiries (hopefully/probably not!) but this episode is sooo well acted and accurate of inquiries here!

janepotsie

Yeah it’s not a coincidence. The creator, showrunner & writer of Succession is Jesse Armstrong who wrote for Thick of It as well as Peep Show amongst other things.

Luke Barton

Glenn's testimony is just excellent

One of the all-time great bottle episodes from any show, alongside 'The Fly' off 'Breaking Bad' and 'Birth' off 'Ab Fab'. Despite the length there are still some hilarious outtakes that got cut, including Stewart describing his 'meditation room', which the Baroness first took for a toilet.

Flemish Giant

New film? Oh man I need to check that out.

James Forrest

Some of the early episodes of Succession are very similar in style to The Thick of It - lots of jokes in a dense and quick firing script. Looking forward to Jesse Armstrongs new film. It would be amazing if Boomer covers Succession - one of the greatest shows I've ever watched - sharp and funny like The Thick of It, but with Shakespearean level drama and twists too.

This episode is one of the best examples of the genius of Armando Iannucci. To make an episode like this, which is completely out of step with the style of the show, was audacious, but it works brilliantly and all the characters played it so well. Pretty sure a lot of improvisation played a part here, as it seems to do with a lot of Iannucci’s work to great effect. Obviously influenced by the Hutton enquiry, which is a theme which continues from what In The Loop was about, but reworked differently for The Thick of It.

Richie

Yeah that was a great watch-along and you got the nuances perfectly. Malcolm was the star of the whole inquiry, using it for his own ends and even turning on the members of it when they poked at him a little too hard. It sounds odd saying this but that was probably the most overt example of Malcolm using the full range of his powers that we've ever seen, maybe even more than in the episode where he brought down Nicola ... and the best of it is that he did most of his work offscreen. A majestic performance from Capaldi during his testimony ... but then I thought the whole cast killed it with this one, every moment was so on the nose, every character brilliantly realised, even line of dialogue delivered superbly. It was terrible knowing it was the second to last episode because you knew there wasn't going to be much more of it ... but they were going out at the top of their game. For another great example of it (and some of the same writing team) Succession will stay with you for years. Same guy who wrote Peep Show, so you KNOW you're going to get something special. And you will love it.

James Forrest

This is my favourite episode of the entire show, I’m not complaining about getting it a week early

Jack Blackmore

Spot on about what happened. Baroness Sureka was asking Malcolm some tough questions that he didn't like and probably knew he couldn't give an answer to without committing a crime. So when all the journalists left the room they were reacting to breaking news that Malcolm had leaked about the Baroness. As he said, the plan was to prejudice the inquiry so that its findings couldn't be used against him.

Joe Gardiner

Wrong episode! What an omnishambles.

Bryter

Oh christ Boomer, mistakes happen to the best of us

J

Yeah Boomer, the lads and lassies here are right, you skipped one :) Does this mean we're now getting two in a day? :)

James Forrest

Oh no Boomer you've missed an episode!

Rach

Plz watch xx

Yep, this is Episode 6...

AlexAlterBridge

Yes I think you're right.

1234

You fucked it 🤦‍♂️ sure this will be a confusing watch when you skipped the episode leading into it

MJ

No gavin and stacey this week ?

Morgan

I think you might have skipped an episode, the inquiry is episode 6, 5 leads into it.
