Sorry for the long intro.

Derry Girls S1 Ep4 REACTION!

Comments

Fan for years on youtube, just joined you guys here today for the derry girls, irish myself (actual, not the american kind :P). 33.35 - be careful when you take a drink during this show lol looking forward to binging your reactions, my next few nights of what to watch are sorted now :D

Blink More

Oh no what they gonna do, leave an angry comment?😂

Sivi

The cast of Derry Girls once got introduced to present an award at a ceremony as "The Inbetweeners but female and Northern Irish" - So the comparisons are fine. haha

Karl shields

You call them Irish a lot. Some Northern Irish don't take to kindly to that.

Karl shields

When you said shooting up schools, I could literally see the word "homeschool" appeal on QB's face.

KMJ

The troubles were awful, the more people who educate themselves on it the better, this is why I love the boomer actually takes his time to look into things would encourage everyone else to do the same.

Christy Hennessy

Don't worry Queen...you'll soon have plenty of Russians shouting at you. Boom...if the queen says come to bed.......ffs turn the computer off

Paul Liversage

totally with you on the bangs boomer. I can't unsee a medieval style helmet when ever I see that cut

The Everything Guy

The troubles extended quite far it there was a incident with the ira in Gibraltar. Ending in multiple dead Ira members, cheers the SAS

Adam

I forgot about another film worth watching that is related to this is the recent movie Ken Branagh's Belfast. Set around the time when it changed in the late 1960s

Yaapsdad

10 comments on one video, jesus.

Jonathan Finn

I think to enjoy this show to the max you should know the basics about the troubles and the current divide in northern ireland because theres a few scenes and references that won't make sense to you or the jokes wont land properly in the later episodes

Adam

You definitely do not need to know all about the troubles to enjoy this show. Most people under 30 here have very little knowledge on it anyway, as sad as that is

George Lund

I haven’t yet I was waiting to see what response the comment got 😂

Aodhán McCrudden

And QB I think would love the 'Mam' Mairead. Have you suggested this show already on the recommendations thread? 🤞

janepotsie

And once they get far into it Dinny the Teaspoons story but especially Billy definitely and the headmaster as you said

Aodhán McCrudden

Yessss! Just imagine KB's reaction to Billy.... And then the headmaster 😂

janepotsie

Sorry me again! (No I'm not really sorry). Haha. For other Irish sitcoms you could try The Young Offenders. It's set in Cork in the South and it's about two teenage friends who are always in trouble. I believe it's been recommended before

Yaapsdad

An a final one from me on this thread, The Disappeared, a 2013 documentary, from Darragh MacIntyre about those who the IRA took for various crimes, perceived or otherwise, never to be seen again.

Yaapsdad

Different League: The Derry City Story. A documentary about the football (soccer , to you) team.

Yaapsdad

The Undertones: Teenage Kicks: The Story of The Undertones. Yet another documentary. This one about the brilliant Derry band with the background of the troubles.

Yaapsdad

All thought provoking and some controversial

Yaapsdad

If you want an excellent movie on the hunger strikes then watch Hunger starring Michael Fassbender, directed by Steve McQueen, the British director, not the American acting great. There is also last year's interesting film about Irish rappers Kneecap

Yaapsdad

Also a fairly recent BBC documentary which was made in 1972 but only released to watch last year. The Secret Army. It's about the IRA.

Yaapsdad

Yet another documentary series that you could watch is Spotlight on the Troubles: A Secret History

Yaapsdad

Other movies that relate to this are Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. Both are set around 100 years ago. Also the movie, '71, which as its title suggests is set a few years after the start of the modern period known as the troubles

Yaapsdad

For an Interesting informative piece on the subject to give you more on the background, then the BBC documentary series Once upon a time in Northern Ireland, is a good place to start. It's 5 episodes.

Yaapsdad

I have a fringe, and it certainly doesn't look shocking thanks 👌🏻

Beccy

Don't worry about the long intro It's actually very refreshing to see people seeking knowledge on the subject matter at hand It's just as interesting as the reaction itself to be honest

Inter Malager

King and Queen, don't be too hung up about having to about comment on the 'serious' subjects raised just enjoy the comedy and drama. Though it's good you take an interest in the history off-camera to give you the background.

Fordy7169

The BBC did a 5 part documentary recently called Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland. Really interesting watch and gives a good account of some of the personal stories around the troubles, I think it won several awards recently.

Dom Purdie

I just had a quick look and it is only 3 series', but I didn't realize it ended so soon. Only in 2022.

Joe Thornhill

I can't imagine Zooey Deschanel without them.

Joe Thornhill

Bangs (fringes) look absolutely shocking on anybody

Jarrod Platt

No believe me speaking as a Brit I think that all of us just want to see an end to the hurt that the troubles brought both Ireland and Britain Saint Patrick's Day is coming up and I think they'll be a fantastic reaction for both you Brian and Cali No I know that you've Brian have watched it before but it would be fantastic to see the emotional rollercoaster happening for Cali #JusticeforGiuseppeConlon I personally think that it would be a really great idea and we're not into the idea of adding more trouble to the troubles it's been a quarter of a century since the Good Friday Agreement let's focus on healing as two great nations to a better Anglo Irish relationship says I

Nunabissess

BTW we don't call the hair on our head bangs, we call it a fringe, bangs is what James was trying to do with Katia.

Aaron

😂 Really good ep. Loved the intro talk.

Jason Scade

My Grandmother (who lived in North Wales at the time) almost fed me and my Bro some "tainted" lamb, simply because she bought it discount price, no questions asked. Thankfully my Mother intervened, otherwise me and my Bro might have spent the rest of our lives glowing like fireflies.

Jay

Brilliant reaction! Keep watching the Derry Girls, its a brilliant show!

ThatGuyStephen

1:46 Michael Collins (1996) is really good. Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, etc. It's solid drama, tense! From Wiki ; Michael Collins is a 1996 biographical historical drama film about Michael Collins, a leading figure in the early-20th-century Irish struggle for independence against Britain.

Jason Scade

Boomer I just got back from belfast after an insane stag weekend, ended up staying in the same hotel as paddy donovan by accident, drank too much, saw Tony Bellew on his way to golf, was staying at the hotel too nuts mate, laverys shout out, couldn't possibly go in to everything my point is go to the north of Ireland before england, I'm back in brum now wishing I was back.

Christy Hennessy

The song they’re dancing to is Saturday Night by Whigfield, a 90s disco classic! I’m not sure anyone knew the dance 100% but everyone would get up to do it 😂

Rachel

I can’t imagine why people would vote against watching a movie. It seems unlikely it would cause arguments. In the name of the father is amazing.

Julian T

I live in Derry, at most a 3 minute walk from the bloody Sunday location, and the same for operation motorman. Most people my age (44) know people who were killed or injured on bloody Sunday. The real strange thing was as I got older, meeting English friends that had almost no idea of what we grew up through. I think that's why most people here now have such a positive attitude.. We've lived through the changes and seen how much better things are when people with 2 totally different viewpoints work together. We've a wee way to go yet but things here a pretty good

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Yo that was that craziest thing queen has ever just come out and said lmao

zStarr

Sunday Bloody Sunday. What a great song! Really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday.

AdamMcAdamface

Just going out so was planning to watch this tomorrow, but couldn't help but watch the intro when you said it was long. Great intro! It's always good to have a passion for learning new stuff and the humility to understand you don't know everything. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, but I'm pretty sure you know more about UK history than I do about US history.

AdamMcAdamface

I was in Manchester city centre when the IRA bomb went off in 1996, just a few hundred yards away. Luckily, no-one was killed. Such a scary day!

Nidge

The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006) directed by Ken Loach, would be a great film to react to as well. ..set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–1921) and the Irish Civil War (1922–1923). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wind_That_Shakes_the_Barley_(film)

Martyn Dawson

I think it's sometimes hard not to compare with Inbetweeners. They had the sexy French Patrice student, and Derry has the sex loving Ukrainian come to stay. Also when she said give me a minute at the house party it gave me Will vibes when he said give me a minute to Lauren when stranded on the boat!

Peter Andrews

KB, for yr next intro could u clip QB saying "Last season she got eaten out in a carriage" 😆 👌

bdazzer85

Can’t believe Saturday Night didn’t break America

Elliot Langhorn

The song they were dancing too is really popular in Europe and England! I’m British and it’s played at all the weddings here haha

neonlucy

Sue Cook's pulled out

Joe Blakeley

You should react to the young offenders it’s filmed in cork. Is hilarious

Aodhán McCrudden

When I was a young kid, we were afraid to go into London because of the IRA bombing civilian locations like the London Underground.

Will

In response to the rant at the beginning, and YouTube comments. It baffles me how some people will attack you for not knowing the nuanced political situation in another country. The same person would be equally ignorant about politics in Florida, or for that matter, Berlin or Paris, etc, which is equally understandable. I hope you don't feel like you have to monitor everything you say in case someone manages to find some offense there, because that would suck, and most of us understand. To the video itself, I'm really enjoying these reactions. And always nice to see Queen Bommer join in the fun.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Wales was effected by Chernobyl too, heavy rain in April and May following the disaster drenched higher ground with alarming quantities of radioactive caesium and iodine, so a ban was put on farms selling their livestock, but there was one upside, the glowing sheep were a lot easier to find in the fields at night! 😉😉🤪

Mark Jones

The song they’re dancing to was Saturday Night by Whigfield which had its own little dance - a bit like the Macarena. I think back to doing this at parties in my youth and cringe! 😖😅

Jase777

another classic one for the book of Queen Boomerism! "Let 'im wink, let 'im wank!" 🤣🤣🤣

Beccy

https://youtu.be/VPzTCBmd5iU?si=ttEnDv6BKu5-A3Ls Interesting podcast about the troubles for those wanting to simply laugh and learn absolutely nothing about the troubles

Toby Lewis

"I think the Irish are going through a major image change. I mean, the old image of leprechauns, shamrock, Guinness... horses running through council estates... toothless simpletons... people with eyebrows on their cheeks... badly tarmacked drives, in this country... uh, men in platform shoes being arrested for bombings... lots of rocks, and, uh, Beamish. I think people are saying "Yes, there's more to Ireland than this". A good slogan for the tourist board. "There's more to Oireland dan dis". -alan partridge

andrew robinson

Brilliant vlog. Us Brits have a strange history, hence why so many of us the the Irish headed across the pond to the promised land.

John Dawber

Same here, weird.

Jamie
