The Thick Of It S4 Ep3 REACTION!

Peter Manion has been extremely unhappy since his party won and it is utterly hilarious!

The Thick Of It S4 Ep3 REACTION!

Comments

is it wrong I re watch this the odd Sunday with KB, to get ready for Monday and work ...

rtkeane

i don't know if anyone has told you, but one of the main writers of the Thick of It is Jesse Armstrong who was also involved in the Peep Show and eventually went on to be the show runner for Succession - which does also have a few thick of it style moments if you havent seen it yet

Stephen Hampton

"What's that“ I'm supposed to be commenting on a man's suicide, not a fucking camel race!" Probably my favourite episode of this

Jack Nicholas

Was about to explain this... and that Glen defected from Labour to the Lib Dems as they are kind of 'in between' Labour and Conservatives. This is an important part of the dynamic between Peter and Fergus... they are both in government but from different parties

kdoganorak

Peter is both hilarious and by some miles easily one of the most decent people in the show.

ALW

Justy notice you dropped a Fonejacker video on YT. I think you'd love Facejacker, it's the series that came after and has so many great characters, played by the genius that is Kayvan Novak! Think you'd love it if you ever did full reactions.. Highly Recommended :)

carrot

They should do a new series of this set during the lockdown covid pandemic

mav

I was thinking W1A and that 2012 show is very similar comedy. If you are thinking of doing something similar when thick of it finishes
 just an idea.

Two 'The Thick of It' episodes by KB in one week? Does Christmas come 10 months early this year? 'Yes and ho' now pops up in my head anytime I see some asinine law proposal in the news. Or in the case of America recently, asinine actual laws ('The Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America', yes and ho!). The only surprising thing about Stewart's brainstorming circle is that he didn't make them all take their shoes off too. I love his use of the name 'poppet' for multiple people, Emma in a previous episode and now Mary Drake (who seems to be higher up in the food chain than he is, so that's quite daring).

Flemish Giant

One of the best episodes

Jack

The two young guys you dislike aren’t actually conservatives. They are Liberal Democrats who are the party the Conservatives had to form a Coalition government with as the conservatives didn’t win enough seats to form a government on their own.

I think you're definitely supposed to prefer Malcolm - he might tear you a new one occasionally but you know where you stand with him. Plus beneath it all I think he's a decent person. (He's always polite to people just doing normal non-political jobs) Stuart would drive you over the edge plus he's rude to people who don't deserve it. And no, I'm not related to Peter.

David Mannion

Yeah, that's a great point. There's something so genuine and relatable about how exasperated he is with all the bullshit he faces. Who among us wouldn't react in exactly the same way after being trapped in a room with Stewart Pearson every day!

Henry Graham

He's low key the most likeable character in the show, absolutely agreed his performance is amazing. Honestly it could have been risky splitting the season having episodes without Malcolm but he manages to make you forget about Malcolm for half an hour because he's so good!

MJ

“Mine Kampf”
 mind camp

Tucker is supposed to be Alistair Cambell crossed with Angela Murphy. For Labour and now Manion and co are Tories
the 2 bankers are the lib dems who were in coalition with the hippie Tories and supposed to be twats because they were liberal hippies who sold out at the chance of a car and an office

rtkeane

Oh thank god something decent to watch! Will have to do all again when we finish

Stuart is the ‘spin doctor’ for the Conservatives. He was (I’m guessing) inspired by the likes of Dominic Cummings, who worked for the Conservatives in more recent years when they were in power. He was into all that ‘blue sky thinking’ crap. He’s most famous for breaking lockdown rules during the pandemic, and then trying to blame it on a weird excuse about needing to have his eyes tested. Worth reading up on! He always came across as a bit unhinged to me. The two younger guys are from the Liberal Democrats, who were the minority party in the coalition government, and abandoned most of their pre-election policies in order to be part of the government, thinking that at least they might have a few wins along the way (which to be fair they did, but at the expense of a total collapse in their support base amongst students. They went from pledging to end tuition fees, but ended up agreeing to triple the fees!). In summary, our politics is fucked too!

Now that we’re near the end of this show and the cat’s already out of the bag, just a bit of extra info about the ‘fictional’ parties in the show and the relation to their real life parties. In the interests of political balance and neutrality, I’ll slag them all off. Malcolm Tucker is largely believed to be based on Alistair Campbell, who was Labour's Director of Communications (or ‘spin doctor’) in the early 2000’s when they were in power, and played a big part in the build up to the Iraq War. The film critic Mark Kermode once got him to watch In the Loop and interviewed him about it afterwards. Thought you might want to watch it in your own time, I’ll include the link. Personal opinion, Malcolm is a dick, but he’s a much more entertaining dick than Alistair Campbell. (Might need to split this over 2 comments!).

I feel like I have similar reactions to Peter Mannion working in corporate. People speak in sentences filled with corporate buzz words. You ask then what they meant by what they just said and they cannot tell you. Multiple meetings that don't progress anything. The amount of absolute nonsense they have you doing- like the camp in this ep for team building- it's frustrating AF.

PoPaDoMZz

The amount of meetings I've been in where I've wanted to use Peter's 'You idiot that's fucking mental'

Rach

You'll find even more respect for this great show when you realise that some lines that might be seen as throwaway lines are very deliberate and pointed - 'We drove a man to his death! We are responsible for this!' No accident with these - all about the tragic, real life death of David Kelly (think Iraq war). The Hutton enquiry followed that tragedy, you might see a similar enquiry in a later episode to come.

Richie

I think you'd like The Hippopotamus from 2017. It stars Roger Allam at his grumpy best and is based on the novel written by Stephen Fry. It also features Tim McInnery from Blackadder/Game Of Thrones etc.

Joe Blakeley

Yes Fergus (the Junior Minister to Peter) and his advisor Adam are a different party 'The Liberal Democrats' (Glenn also joined this party from Malcolm/Nicola's losing 'Labour Party') Peter's 'Conservative Party' won the most seats (MP's) in the election but had to join The Liberal Democrats (3rd most MP's) in a coalition to get an overall majority in Parliament to be able to govern/pass laws, etc. As is usual coalitions turn to shit because of the disagreements between the 2 Parties which is highlighted by this episode.

Fordy7169

The two guys you don’t like aren’t Conservatives they’re Liberal Democrats who are in coalition with the Conservatives - that’s key to the whole dynamic with them. They bought the bank more because they wanted to get her out of the office after Mr Tickell died and I think because she’d mentioned going to Dan Miller in Labour and they didn’t want to lose the chance to make their mark - but I could be wrong.

Kieran B

Slow Horses is probably your nearest Thick of It fix with Jackson Lamb in particular (played by Gary Oldman)

Kieran B

Yes And HO! At risk of repeating myself... nah fuck it. Glorious. Again. Especially this episode. Oh Brian, this was a tonic today after a shitty work day, thank you. Roger continues to be just amazing as Peter - his rant at Stewart after he "cracks" is beyond satisfying. Your ongoing love for this show gives me life. I had the unfortunate experience of having to attend one of those types of "Day Retreats" dressed up as some sort of team building exercise. It was utterly excruciating and I walked out half way through. I didn't cause a scene but I made sure it was noted that I was leaving. I sat in the hotel bar for a while and had a few glasses of brandy. Luckily my manager at the time was a good egg, and he didn't blame me. Never attended one since. What a fucking waste of time. Nothing good ever comes out of those things in my experience. Everyone comes back to work, having learned nothing, or the will to change anything. Anyway, sorry for the rant!

Phil Robinson

KB, this show is definitely rewatch material, looking into the future, with your better half as well. I'm sure the Queen would like to learn some creative, offensive put-downs for use in daily life.

Fordy7169

When the The Thick Of It runs out. Armando Iannucci took his genius to HBO with Veep. As a Thick Of It fan, I approached with caution. I was wrong to be worried. Veep is stunningly brilliant. It keeps The Thick Of It flame alive. Highly recommended.

Wilx

This is probably my favourite episode. I actually prefer the oppositions episodes (Mannion, Stewart etc)

PrinceMorque

He said Mind Campf coincidentally

Kieran B

What an episode, love Mannion and the rest of the team, actually think his episodes in S4 are better than the oppositions ones

J

God, I love Roger Allam's performance as Peter Mannion. A perfect portrayal of a man who simply hates his life.

Henry Graham

Been waiting for this one with the scene on the slide lol and the aftermath lol
