The Thick Of It S3 Ep6 REACTION!

Malcolm Tucker might be the greatest character ever.

The Thick Of It S3 Ep6 REACTION!

Comments

Man I agree Malcolm Tucker is the best creation from British TV. Delboy very close 2nd. Best written and acted character ever.

SirCaos

Del boy is a national treasure but Malcolm Tucker is 10/10 in every scene.

Amin Masoum

Start with Ecclestone’s Doctor (the start of the New series). You could get away with starting with 10 (David Tennant) but a lot of the later stuff builds on Tennant’s run so I wouldn’t skip that. But given that Ecclestone’s run is really short you might as well watch it

Kieran B

They only semi-improvised as part of the writing process, but after that it was strictly on script

Kieran B

The writers are the creators in the UK, not studio employees like they are in the US

Kieran B

‘Giant Gaystacks’ is a line I managed to miss every time before - you might remember Giant Haystacks as Loch Ness in WCW? I do remember the actor that played Ben Swain was in a short comedy about British wrestling made by Tim Plester called The Wrestling - and he did play Giant Haystacks! On that note you definitely need to check out Wrestle Me on YouTube, I’ll think you’ll really appreciate it KB

Kieran B

1: I must've forgotten all about that reference, but Chris appears in 3 episodes of the series. So, that's some narrowing-down to do. And 2: You've just made me realize that they refer to him as "Chris" and "Ollie". Which is now making me wonder where "Ollie" came from.

Joe Thornhill

I enjoy Malcolm Tucker more than Delboy so no I don't think it's heresy to say.

RA Keogh

Also top 10 would be Basil Fawlty, Captain Mainwaring, Baldrick, Blackadder, Brian Potter, Ali G and Norman Stanley Fletcher. With a nod to American sitcoms which for the most part aren't as good, the fictional exaggerated Larry David from Curb your Enthusiasm would be one of the greatest characters too.

Yaapsdad

As QB would call them...Tenner shoes

MrPhil_K

Delboy is a brilliant character. But imo Alan Partridge is also better than him if only marginally. Top 10 would also be Father Ted as well

Yaapsdad

The greatest character in all of sitcomland is without doubt Malcolm Tucker

Yaapsdad

I Like seeing Malcolm fuck up and run around just like the others. Just 'cuz he's the boss with the comedy gold insults, doesn't mean he's the golden boy who does no wrong. Talking bout funnier character: Tucker. Talking about their personas with a sense of realism? Unless Tucker supports his grandparent/uncle and younger sibling with his wages: Del-Boy.

Joe Thornhill

It's a family show that sometimes gets pretty dark. One spin-off ('The Sarah-Jane adventures') is a kids show, and the other (Torchwood) is more mature. Doctor who is in the middle, that more often than not, leans towards the mature side. Especially in Capaldi's era.

Joe Thornhill

omg stfu about your shoes hahahahahahah

daniel shears

Doctor Who is a kids show 🏃‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍♂️‍➡️

Julian T

I know but itdoznt matter

mav

Forgive me but my ocd brain is a grammar nazi. *would’ve

Julian T

"What's that smile for, do you need winding?". Ollie came out with some great lines in this series. And please, for the love of god, don't go down the Doctor Who route.

Mackem

Dear lord it seems that some Doctor Who fans are kicking off and arguing. Calm your grits. Seriously. It's embarrassing. KB- if you're mentioning Doctor Who - yes, he was brilliant in that, but only if the writing allowed him to be. The run up to the finale in his final season as The Doctor was fantastic in my opinion. The thing that solidifies his place, was in one of the final episodes. A speech he gives to his greatest enemy - and it completely encapsulated who and what The Doctor is, does, and why he does it. The delivery of that speech from Capaldi absolutely threw me into tears. It's that good. The weight of a show that was at least 50 odd years old at that time, the character of The Doctor almost effortlessly defined in a few sentences... Peter Capaldi is an incredible actor. I suppose that's it. Meanwhile - Steve Fleming is coming... you won't be ready.

Phil Robinson

I’m going to be so sad when this reaction series is over

Max Morley

22 episodes in 1 series was a proper US comedy portion (rewatched a bit of friends, 1st time in 20years) The entire of Father Ted or IT crowd or most of them would fall short of a feckin season. 6 episodes a year, what sort of bollocks is that!! and it's sod-all to do with quality over quantity, resources? moo-poo ! we get to watch our favourite characters go grey before they complete what would be a US season !! 'yes yes, 6 episodes is all they want - It's not like there's a market for it' or do our 20 writers go on strike if someone mentions more. Either way we wuz robbed !

emu cat

I didn't watch Dr Who, but if Peter Capaldi would of played him like Malcolm Tucker I would of. The yanks have that west wing tv show we have the Thick of It , I think we won

mav

It'll be like watching the Disney Star Wars films only.

Geraint Harrison

https://youtu.be/5Blf073f2Lc?si=pD7YP5HJS74t_0_k Just a quick 30 second video for you, but this Doctor Who trailer spliced with Malcolm Tucker clips is pretty much what we all imagined when Capaldi was announced for the role!

David Lyons

I'm a little annoyed... not by Boomer, by people in the comments. Saying that it's okay to just start Doctor Who from Series 5 of the revival... That's like watching LOTR but skipping The Fellowship of the Ring... If you want to watch Dr Who, start from series one like everyone else.

The Uber Geek

I wouldn't say it's true for Capaldi - I think you could conceivably jump in with 9, 10,11, 13 or 15 and be ok, but 12's run relies so heavily on plot threads from 11's time, especially his earlier season.

Rach

Huge Doctor Who Fan. It would be great to to see you react to it. Matt Smith & Peter Capaldi are my favourite of the modern Who. Season 5 onwards would be a great place to start. If you enjoy Matt Smith, you could carry on to 6 (a personal favourite) I'd also reccomend Torchwood Children Of Earth. Capaldi is brilliant as one of the supporting characters in one of the greatest & darkest bits of TV sci-fi ever made. Only 5 episodes but it's fantastic. Another recommendation is The Second Coming written by Russell T Davies starring Christopher Eccleston. It's a short 2 part drama. What would happen if Christ came back today in modern Manchester? Phenomenal bit of TV. Hugely underrated. Brilliantly done.

Duncan Hart

If you're going to watch any of Capaldi's Doctor Who, watch the episode "Heaven Sent". His talent and enthusiasm for the role were mostly squandered with some really bad storylines, but that was a great episode (amongst an annoying overarching plot), partly because he carries it almost entirely on his own.

ER

I once had a Programme Manager who was out-and-out exactly the same as Malcolm Tucker. No exaggeration. Only difference was he was Irish rather than Scottish. We had to call him out for his behaviour a few times, but most of the time it was just funny. Couldn't take him seriously! Peter Capaldi is a living legend and national treasure 🤗

janepotsie

A commitment true, but it’s not like a baby that needs constant attention lol if he were to watch the show it’d be a shame to see him miss some great episodes

Geraint Harrison

Season 5 with Matt Smith would be a decent jumping on point for him. It's a soft reboot, with a new cast, new writers, production and bigger budget. If he enjoys it, I'd then recommend watching the first 4 and then the rest after.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Same. Only Fools, like Gavin and Stacy's a little too 'safe' for me. I like my comedies to be a little more adult themed. They're fine shows, but not my favourite.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Matt Smith's season 5 would be a good jumping on point for him. The whole show feels fresh, new writers, new production, new budget, an entire new cast. And it's a soft reboot. I love the first four seasons but it takes some commitment to take on a show with 14 seasons.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I agree that's probably the case, but I do think there was a lot of improvisation on this show, so it might not have been all about the script.

Coleyman

I'm a huge Doctor Who fan. I would recommend season 5 doctor who, for Matt Smith, and season 8 (Peter Capaldi). Imo, Peter's best season is season 9, but it wouldn't make sense to watch season 9 without seeing season 8 first. So if you're wanting a Peter Capaldi Doctor Who season, it would have to be season 8. Peter is in 38 episodes of Doctor Who in total. (8,9,10) Matt Smith is in about the same. (5,6,7) Doctor Who is the kind of show you can just jump in anywhere, really, and figure things out episode to episode. So starting at season 5 would work. Each of the new Doctor's first episodes are sort of treated like a soft reboot.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

KB, I'll give you one character's name, mentioned a few times in this episode, 'Steve Fleming'. Prepare.

Fordy7169

Yes, I believe the team of TTOT writers just basically tried to come up with most sweary, offensive remarks they could think of and gave them to Malcolm so every scene he's in he's at maximum impact (except when Jamie was present then they shared them out a bit).

Fordy7169

Yes he mentioned him.

Fordy7169

I agree that for word to comedy ratio, Malcolm Tucker is probably one of the best characters to ever grace the screen. Love only fools as well though. Great reaction 👏

Coleyman

I agree, I'd be happy to curate a list of the good/essential ecclestone to capaldi episodes to react to and cut out absolutely all the filler. I've watched a lot of Doctor Who YT reactions. Anything after capaldi is pretty divisive and I would only watch if you really get I to it. Not sure if the show would be your cup of tea at all KB but it's popular with a lot of non comedy reactors

Ste_UTB

Also Capaldi is fantastic in the role but his first season is pretty mediocre writing-wise. It you ever were going to watch Who, it's not the point to start.

Rach

Alas Boomer, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi are a combined 6-ish seasons of Doctor Who, they have about 3 each plus some specials

Rach

You're right not wanting to go down the Doctor Who wormhole - the channel would become a total nerd fest pretty quickly! The current broad scope of comedy shows is brilliant.

Richie

For doctor who...David Tenant and Matt Smith are the best series to watch

Corey Williams

Malcolm's "It's a fucking Lockdown" Speech went a bit viral when Covid started😅

Richard D

Is Jay from Inbetweeners not still in the mix for your fav character as well KB?

Oliver

If you want to see a young Peter Capaldi then I think you would enjoy the film Local Hero which he is in alongside Burt Lancaster.

Neilyman

If you do Doctor Who, Capaldi's seasons aren't where you should start at all, you wont understand much of the references, why things are the way they are, who the returning characters are etc. Start from the 2005 soft reboot beginning is honestly the best way to watch the show, and even then it might not be your thing if you're not really into silly science fiction as it is very much that at times.

Geraint Harrison

Personally I’d say he’s a better character than Del Boy but I’ve never been a big only fools fan. I think Malcolm is one of the most morally complex and fascinating characters ever crafted for a comedy and he’s so beautifully written and played by Capaldi.

Spoingus

You mentioned Doctor Who, there is an episode where Malcolm Tucker is referenced by Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, Chris “Ollie” Addison appears in the same episode.

Wayne Bennett

Agreed Malcom Tucker is one of the best characters of all time!

PoPaDoMZz

i think theres some potential to doctor who reactions but you would most certainly have to watch the first season of the reboot (christopher eccleston) because its basically designed to slowly introduce all the plot points of who the doctor is and what the show is about, and then at that point if you want to watch that AND matt smith AND capaldi then you may as well watch the whole things which is a shame because it is a huge timesink after all and i dont think you'd be mega into all the filler and whatnot maybe a viewer can curate a list of all the 'must watch' episodes for you so that you can watch basically every season chronologically without the dogshit in there

Dairychoco

Malc is one of my favourite British characters. Probably top ahead of bishop Brennan. What can I say, I love bastards!

Bisonhead

"This is The Shawshank Redemption. Only with more tunneling through shit and no fucking redemption." 😂

Joe Blakeley

Yes!!! Finally!!!
