Maybe they will move to Reeds.

Spaced S2 Ep7 "Leaves" REACTION!

Comments

I feel queen boomer would have loved this. Missed a trick not watching it together

I'd say it's because this show is a mix of surreal and subtle humor. The subtle stuff, picking a bad example out that I just noticed in the ep "Can I get the first train please *you don't hear the reply* can I get the third train please" Just suggesting that after hearing the first one she was like "Woah that's far too early in the morning" i just one of those which these are packed with.

At the end of the day, it's not a hilarious show, its just a quite funny show. Its main appeal was that it captured the zeitgeist of that time in the UK, amongst people of that age group. If you are outside of that niche, it misses more than it hits in my opinion.

You need to forget the polls, I've just voted on another one of my patreon accounts and the Thick of it, currently has 5% of the vote and 'Derek' has 25%, as the quote goes, observe the masses and do the opposite. That said, I know Greg Davis's 'Cuckoo', is right up your street and would make a great addition to the channel.

Jason Bonner

That's a really good point, never thought of it before but it definitely nailed a certain mood at a point in time for the people born at the tail end of Gen X (Xenials?) I'd just got my first decent job and moved to London when this was first shown so it holds a lot of fond memories for me.

David Mannion

That is a spot on recreation of the Royle Family opening credits. When you’ve watched the Royle Family (which I cannot recommend enough, it was groundbreaking and aired the same time as The Office) there’s some sketches / bits from other shows parodying it I can send for YouTube

Kieran B

Completely agree, nothing makes me avoid channels quicker than obviously fake laughing

Kieran B

I can relate on some level, every third Family Guy reference appears to be some z lister whose last meaningful role was in 1982 or a reference to a movie from the 50s, having to watch it with IMDB open takes the edge off. Also, last episode was a bit shitey.

Z is for Zed

honestly i saw the films before I saw this back in the day and my expectation was too high too but new single series .... I know what it is cant wait ... think you might have kittens

Craig McCulloch

You should definitely watch The Royle Family, which is referenced in the intro. Early Doors, written by Craig Cash who also wrote The Royle Family, is also an underrated classic. Also, you might not recognise the estate agent at the beginning of this episode but he's appeared in a couple of things you've reacted to. He was in The Thick Of It as the guy who Malcolm says has wandering hands. He also played Clinton Baptiste, the psychic medium in Phoenix Nights.

Joe Blakeley

I've shown my kids loads of old sitcoms from Steptoe and Son back in the early 60s to things like 15 Storeys High in the 21st Century. But me and my partner don't show them Spaced because Spaced is something that is only really special to people some people who were born in the UK between 1974 and 1983. For that very small demographic Spaced is a generation defining show. For anyone outside that demographic.. 'meh'.

Wes

Yeah and Daisy in in that too of course, great show though I think Boomer would love it!

Mark Jones

That's a wrap, just think of it this way, without this there wouldn't have been a Cornetto Trilogy! And if you ever rewatch the trilogy you'll now be shouting Oh look it's Marsha as she's in all 3, just... please tell me you got the 'Say Anything' reference???? 😁

Mark Jones

Oh, I thought Brian was fucking before they walked in. Marsha or Twist, though, I don't know. Oh, god. I know Mike's thinking sound at 23:23. Where is that from? FUCK! Aw, now I know the Thunderbirds theme. Only really saw the movie in the cinema (because Doc-ock's hospital scene in Sider-Man 2 scared the shit out of me.)

Joe Thornhill

First things first: Of course Marsha was with Mick Jagger (And Keith Richards) in that photo. That foot wide jaw? I thought you were fans of there's, lol. Now the side note: I tell you what, Boomer. I think everyone needs to watch more stuff to completely understand any and all Edgar Wright productions. And never mind being a different nationality. Try just being the generation after theirs. I was born in 97 but I barely even remember the '00's. So It's never felt write, saying I'm a 90's kid when my brother had 4.5 more years of it than me.

Joe Thornhill

There are some themes of it's time but the heart of it is timeless. Seen other people react to it for the first time recently who are getting it all and loving it. For people that watched it at the time it was pretty mind blowing, the sharpness, the quick almost throw away quips, call backs and editing style made a big impact and it's held in high regard. Can't speak for people seeing it for the first time now though 🤷 different culture - it lands or it doesn't. Still a stone cold quotable classic.

Ash Allen

I honestly don't think it's that you are missing out on a lot of references (although I'm sure you, and most of us, miss a few), I just think that Spaced is more quite amusing than laugh-out-loud funny. There are definitely some really funny moments, but those moments are lightly spread across the 2 series. The characters are likeable, and it's cleverly done, but a lot of the jokes just raise a mild smile, rather than a belly laugh.

James Mulligan

Ha... Forgot Bout the intro to this. It's referencing another one of the all time great modern British sit coms. The Royale Family. That's a must watch

Chris

RIP to the legend David Lynch. Filmmaker, musician, sculptor, photographer, furniture maker and huge lover of coffee passed away today. Sad news. Don’t know if you’re a fan of his films Mr. Boomer, but it’d be cool to see you react to some of his work. A great American artist for sure.

Luke Barton

I was never big on Spaced, either. Although I have enjoyed the Cornetto trilogy (Shawn of the dead etc). Gavin And Stacy never landed with me either. Though I still watched your reactions to these shows, as I enjoy those more than some of the shows when they originally aired. Looking forward to seeing which new show reactions are coming up.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Understand where your coming from King Boomer and there is no point watching you forcing yourself to do a reaction, to something you do not like, the last grand tour you did, it felt a bit like your heart was not in it. But I don't know if this is the case with others but I think it is a theory that holds a lot of weight, in that for me, it is very difficult to judge a long running series off of just series 1 episodes. So many long running series have very un-polished first series, with some poor episodes or just not fully having found their happy medium/ got in their groove. Look at Blackadder Series 1 compared to Series 3 & 4. Only Fools and Horses series 1, definitely and even some of series 2, compared to Series 3 onwards and the specials. Curb your enthusiasm series 1, Friends series 1, Dads Army series 1 and 2, they're okay but nothing compared to the later series where they are more polished shows. This is certainly the case for Still Game and some other series that have run for a long time, from what I can recall one foot in the grave etc is similar. It is of course not always the case, with some shows that only did 2-3 series, being excellent from the first episode, all the way through, with shows like Fawlty Towers, the Office, etc. I get where you are coming from, I personally do not like a show such as the vicar of dibbly, and that run for years and years, but it just isn't for me, but I do feel that it is harsh to judge a show like Still Game off purely season one episodes, if that is the case. However, for all I know though you may have watched some episodes from series one and then series two, and some clips on you tube and then made your judgement, not every show can be for everyone! But I would just air caution when you have a show that is rated by so many and so highly and has run for years and years that the first season often does not do a show justice. And hope you don't take this post as criticism! If you did read through, please do not! I love your stuff and reactions you put out, so keep up great entertainment fella, just thought I would offer my opinion as you have taken the time to give and explain yours.

😂

Jason Scade

The intro was a reference to the comedy show “The Royle family” which is a great show 👌

connor

Jay, it was because of that site, and the forum attached to it, that I ended up being at that convention. But even before that, that forum was a safe haven for me and many others at the time. Surprised the front end website is still there, never even thought of looking. This was Web 1.0 after all. Perhaps if the photos sections survive I can see myself as a 24 year old and cringe.

Phil Robinson

Did you ever look at the Spaced site 'Spaced out'? It's still online, but pretty much a dead site now. It's nice to check out though, as the whole early 90's internet layout of that site feels nostalgic in itself.

Jay

Thanks for sticking to the end, even if it wasn't quite your thing. Spaced is one of my all time favourite comedies, but I wasn't put off by your reactions. It's just one of those comedies that you either love or can't get on with. I always prefer reactors who are honest, than ones who fake enjoyment for the sake of it. Looking forward to the next show.

Jay

He said in the intro that, yes, he would continue with Partridge.

Ash X

He was just being honest 🙂

Ash X

I watch attentively. It just doesn't land well these days. Very much of its time.

Ash X

You can't like everything. I've always found Spaced watchable but it's of its time and many references are now obscure or meaningless. Some episodes are funny, many others rely so much on references that unless you are a big movie fan, or know British TV, then they won't work. Some references I understand but aren't funny: the opening of this episode is aping the opening titles of the comedy-drama The Royle Family, but it's not a particularly funny reference. Spaced was a show for people born in the 1970s who did drugs through the 1990s. It is quite entertaining, but many references don't land any more.

Ash X

Don't worry mate, not every show is going to be as funny as OFAH, FND, Peep Show or The inbetweeners etc... Spaced is good, but it was always more of an 'experimental' show to me, so whilst it isn't always laugh out loud funny, it at least laid the groundwork stylistically for what they perfected in the Cornetto trilogy - It's not as though you were sitting through every episode bored & miserable, I think it's just as you've mentioned, you went in with such high hopes that ultimately it couldn't quite live up to. Also, just a friendly reminder that any of the below shows would be perfect to watch with QB in the future! Peter Kays Car Share White Gold Brassic You, me and the Apocalypse Green Wing (Obviously you know her taste better than all us muppets, but I reckon she'd really enjoy YMATA, which coincidentally has Alan Johnson from Peep Show and Stylax from Plebs)

ryung246

You like what you like. I think the references thing isn't quite what you were missing, there's a few for sure but you got a lot of them. It did seem more that you weren't picking up on the call backs and little quips more. Maybe because you weren't quite grabbed to begin with, there were plenty of times you just seemed to be staring through the screen and a bit distracted - lots of funny stuff was going by you. I think this show needs good attention and definitely has much rewatch value so maybe give it another try one day as you know the characters and build up already you might pick up on more stuff. It is an absolute gem of a show and means a lot to people so you'll get some comments but none of this matters really. To get serious about watching shows and opinions is a bit much.

Ash Allen

Don't be too disheartened Brian - it's just... some of these things are built up in your mind and they're not what you want them to be. It's very much of its time for me. But without this show, you wouldn't have had the Cornetto trilogy. I attended the 2002 Spaced fan convention (dressed like a twat) that took place at the Camden Tap (where the fake shootout took place a few episodes ago) and some of the cast were there. Pegg himself oversaw the charity raffle of various artefacts, and I won the legit first draft script of this very episode, signed by everyone. A much treasured possession of mine. Peter Serafinowicz was there too, and I had a long, long chat with him - amazingly down to earth, we bought each other drinks and it was just like chatting to an old mate. I was asking him about what he was up to TV wise, and he said something was coming that he and Robert Popper (creator and writer of Friday Night Dinner) were filming, which turned out to be "Look Around You", broadcast later that year. Lovely bloke, I'll never forget it.

Phil Robinson

Do whatever ya enjoy watching! Been enjoying your reactions and is good to watch back things of my past!

carrot

The opening sequence in this episode is from a British comedy called The Royle Family and is a really good comedy.

Little Jimmy

Jeeze instead of that intro you could have started 15 Storeys High and realised you love it.

BoSquiddly

Will you be continuing with Partridge Mr Boomer? x
