The Thick Of It S3 Ep5 REACTION!

"This could be from anybody..."

The Thick Of It S3 Ep5 REACTION!

Comments

Acting unions don’t distinguish between comedic and dramatic acting, it’s all just acting. I don’t think there’s many formal situations where it makes sense to officially label someone as a “comedy actor” except for the Golden Globes which separates into categories for Drama and Comedy/Musical. And even then, that’s just because of the film they’re nominated for, not a labelling of someone’s career.

Mark Fraser

welcome to the muppet show

Craig McCulloch

That Mark Kermode joke became a running gag about his massive hands on Kermode and Simon Mayo’s radio show.

Spoingus

Just joined after 2 years of lurking. Can’t wait for you to review episode 6 of the thick of it. It has the best kick down line of all time. The best kick down of any time

Bisonhead

Lord of the rings reference and you didn’t crack… It’s like I don’t know you 😄😄😄

Craig McCulloch

The 2nd part of this episode was pure gold. Couldn't stop laughing

Mackem

David: Yeah, I suppose. But I can't think of anyone who wants to talk to me.

Joe Thornhill

Rash: Oh, I never thought about different rules for different Unions. I wasn't even sure if comedic actors were in a different union than Hollywood stars.

Joe Thornhill

Your horn is broken and shall be blown no more

Kevin Liversage

need some TOI every few weeks to restore my soul. UK is in desprate need of Malcum

rtkeane

These rules are governed by the unions and usually the rule is 'you can't have the same professional name as another member of the union' . This Will Smith is probably under Equity, the UK union wheras Men In Black Will Smith is under SAG/AFTRA, the US union, so there's no conflict.

Rach

Yep, many people have heard of The Gorbals, me included, although I've never been to Glasgow. British culture reaches all corners of these islands.

Dave Roberts

Are you arguing with yourself again Joe? NURSE!

Dave Roberts

I'm surprised that there's 2 Will Smiths. I thought the industry wouldn't let more than one actor have the same name. Don't tell me it's because this Will Smith is "Only a comedic actor" because that's bollocks. Making someone laugh is harder than making someone cry and the film industry needs to realize that already.

Joe Thornhill

It's my birthday! Cunt cake?

Alex P

Will Smith, who plays Phil is actually one of the main writers of The Thick of It. He’s also currently the showrunner for Slow Horses on Apple TV, a great comedy/drama show starring Gary Oldman.

James Liosi

Played by Sara Pascoe, she's a comedian/actor KB. You may have seen her on a few panel shows like QI and '8 out of 10 cats Does Countdown', etc.

Fordy7169

Yes I've watched the whole lot multiple times and it never fails and yes KB maybe worth a rewatch with the Queen in the future.

Fordy7169

Ah yes The Gorbals! I love them too, lovely couple lots of fun.

Curse These Metal Hands!

If you ever consider rewatching another show, this is the one. Every episode has so much dialogue and jokes packed into it, it's impossible to take it all in on the first watch

Sam Popplestone

She’s not an intern she’s the producer, essentially what Karl was on the Ricky Gervais Show

Kieran B

Yep that was on 5 Live with Richard Bacon when Karl was grouting, well remembered

Kieran B

Yes you're right, this is a radio show that actually existed. Richard Bacon (the BBC presenter) is pretty well known here

James Aston

and BBC Radio 5 is a real radio station, i don't follow it so I can't tell what programming is available but yes it's mostly talking head bollocks

Geraint Harrison

Fun fact, they got actual presenters on this show, including Richard Bacon in this episode. Makes shows feel more grounded and real even though the events are fucking bonkers lol

Geraint Harrison

The spin doctors make this programme. Obviously malcom is king!

Daniel Monney

Never knew that about Glasgow - good spot! Capaldi is a Glaswegian too, so I guess it could have been him also.

Richie

See, now THAT'S friendship. Good on them!

Phil Robinson

I listened to a great interview with Peter Capaldi yesterday, he talked about his career, it's ups and downs etc... He revealed that IT WAS HE that wanted to end Malcolm Tucker, as he wasn't sure how the character could move forward. He'd spent years in the wilderness before hand, so it was a brave decision. Did you know that Peter won an Oscar for best Director for a short film he made. He talked about scraping enough money together to travel Economy to the ceremony. Here's the full film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwY-u1pFFdM. And here's Peter picking up his Oscar, he said in the interview it didn't really get him any new work!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKOENTyQcb0

Dave Roberts

You might like this little Gem Alan Partridge with Richard Bacon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7NHIHupjNs

carrot

Christ that was a funny one

J

Yes and Ho.

Kevin Liversage

“The man who was once referred to as the Gorbal’s Goebbels” is a reference to Malcom being Hitler’s Nazi spin doctor Joseph Goebbels with the “Gorbals” being a well known area of Glasgow - that comment is likely to have been missed by anyone not from Glasgow and the creator of the Thick of It (Armando Iannucci) is likely to have added that himself (he himself a Glaswegian).

Jamie Brannan

You're right, it was this exact show that called up Karl with Ricky.

Michael Wake

How do you do this? Was just thinking this afternoon about when the next TOI reaction was coming - and here it is! You beautiful bugger! - Gonna watch now... EDIT - A joy as always - and yes, that scene between Malcolm and Stewart was absolutely fierce. But generally, this absolute descent into chaos at the radio studio is brilliant - too much to comment on. Definitely one of those episodes where one has to think, fuck politics. Fuck it in the ear. I want a c*nt cake now - I'd be overjoyed by that on my birthday!

Phil Robinson

One of my favourite episodes xD I also can't wait for the "Thought Camp"

Laura Murray

I honestly needed this today! Thank you. Ps. I got the same birthday cake as Malcolm when I turned 40, a friend made it for me!
