Garth Marenghi's Darkplace S1 Ep1 "Once Upon A Beginning" REACTION!

Full Blown, blatant, unadulterated and intentional muppetry of the HIGHEST order!

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace S1 Ep1 "Once Upon A Beginning" REACTION!

Comments

The bad dubbing is intentional because sometimes lines had to be added in later (ADR)

Tayanna Studios

I didn't even question the shovel at first.

Spencer

The work of people who love what they do.

Eleanor Elliott

Plus Nicholas Burns who plays Nathan Barley was in the IT Crowd episode The Work Outing, so KB technically has to watch Nathan Barley just to close the loop

Eleanor Elliott

Same here! ☺️ hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Noah Platts

I'd love it if KB watched Nathan Barley, don't think i've seen anybody else react to it before.

David Williams

Nathan Barley is awesome.

Timothy de Brus

“What is this show?!” Yes.

Terrahawk

I've been twice! Once for Terrortome and again for Incarcerat.

QueenKennaofStormholt

She's also the blonde woman Roy has a date with in The IT Crowd, who says "you've got shit on your face" 😂

QueenKennaofStormholt

I've been so excited for you to watch this show, it's so good! Nice to see Queen Boomer as well!

QueenKennaofStormholt

I'd say the late seventies style that people were still watching in the eightees but not eightees

R Lawrence

His IT guy in Bruiser was much funnier.

Manly Stump

Love this show. They paid so much attention to making it shit, and it means you notice something new on every rewatch. It's just a great satire of cheesy retro TV, terrible actors and inept crew, and amateur pulpy horror writers. It's like a lot of film students first projects, except intentionally hilariously crap. I think what really sets it apart though and makes it work is having the show being within the show, and having the interviews taken so seriously, with Garth so arrogant. If it was just a wacky show it wouldn't work anywhere near as well.

Relyx

He was in Flowers too, but virtually nobody saw that surreal comedy.

Z is for Zed

This will nicely put you on the path to enjoying the League of Gentlemen🥳

Owen Rhodes

Absolutely buzzing to watch this show with you guys. This is one that I never got around to watching in full but I always knew I’d love it from what I did see.

Paul Cole

He’s also the know it all IT guy in The Office

Paul Cole

My sister also does this often, we’ve had quite a few funny moments with it, that’s funny that though "hot cock porn" 🤣

James Ellison

You and he were… buddies weren’t you Matt Berry’s voice and line delivery is f-ing hilarious

James Ellison

Probably didn't notice but Garth is the guy who's buying the sofa bed in episode 1 of Friday night dinner

Arthur Goonie

The Italians dominated the horror genre. Up until the mid to late 90's they would always dub the audio after the filming. A good proportion of there cast were speaking different languages, so you would have a British or American actor speaking English while the native actor would be speaking Italian back to them.

452b

Could you react to What We Do In The Shadows after this?

PoPaDoMZz

Was just thinking Boosh, forgot bout Nathan Barley!

Andrew

I just love how you can see the gravestones blowing in the wind

daniel shears

KB, fun fact the actress playing leading lady Liz Asher (real name Alice Lowe) also played one half the of elderly Paedo-Loving American tourist couple in the Harry & Paul sketches and the barmaid in the 'Cos I'm a Cop', amongst many others

Fordy7169

You on about the Boosh? Or Nathan Barley? Both are pretty surreal ha

David Williams

Surely we've all accidentally professed our love for hot cock porn at some point...

AdamMcAdamface

I am SO hyped that you are finally watching this…one of my all time favourite shows. Been to see “Garth” live a few times doing his book readings…so funny.

Noah Platts

Julian Barratt who plays the vicar stars in another surreal comedy you should totally check out too 😉

Andrew

Ngl I don’t mind if you get rid of the lights or dim them. Your reactions are the things we come for lol

Adam

Yeah I totally mixed my Cs and Ps up 💁🏻‍♂️ It's called a spoonerism, I'm mildly dyslexic and do it all the time 🤣

Jonny Dade

really???

Dave Roberts

We need episode 2 asap

Nathan Daly

I'm kind of annoyed that I first thought of her when hearing "Swift".

Joe Thornhill

Don't worry about mixing words up, I once told my ex that I loved hot popcorn, but I accidently said I love hot cock porn 🤣

Jonny Dade

The kid could've been sick. He might've just got his appendix out. You don't pay to stay in hospital, just in case of any medical complications. So it's normal to stay for a couple of days, regardless of the procedure.

Joe Thornhill

Are they about to play 'I wanna know what love is' by Foreigner at 19:31? And of course, Julian Barratt appearing for one minute. Aw. I was convinced that the antenna at the end was either going to light his fag or zap him unconscious .

Joe Thornhill

I didn't expect this, but of course. The Queen needs more Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade.

Joe Thornhill

Never even heard of this but that was both strange and hilarious.

Mike Currie

Hell yeah!

Michael Leighton's Karl Pilkington Animations

I've never watched this so it's brilliant to discover it with you both. Soo funny! I can't believe this went under my radar.

Tim Phillipson

I think QB was on about the Smith & Wesson Magnum.

Mouse

This is so good. Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights would be a brilliant reaction if you like this.

Daniel Monney

I love that you're finally watching this show. It's so good

Gavin Doidge

This is a new one for me too, so it's great watching it with you both 😀

Rob webber

Maybe that's what I was thinking of, thanks!

Z is for Zed

"Understood?" "As crystal."

Joe Blakeley

she better not see any of deans horror porn that stuff scares you stiff

Anthony Brown

man to man next then the boosh to keep the vibe

Anthony Brown

I loved Sightseers, Ben Wheatley films are so dark aren’t they, but I’ve enjoyed a few of his especially Kill List. I even liked Free Fire which seemed quite divisive. I hope KB watches Sightseers at some point, it’s probably too dark of a comedy for some but I don’t recall any animal deaths among all the carnage that insane couple gets up to. I never got around to Prevenge, i liked the premise of it and heard Mark Kermode’s review of it at the time, he liked it, but i just totally forgot about it, i’ll add it to my watch list now.

James Ellison

Was hyped when I got the notification, only to hit new highs when her Majesty turned up in the preview. The person who mentioned "the smoking room" got a like from me for that too. The whole series was up on youtube in the past.

Kirk Deighton

The episode with Merriman Weir in particular is hysterically funny. Peculiarly I remember seeing Black Francis from the Pixies tweet about it years ago.

Charlie

I knew you'd both love this 😂 so glad you're reacting to it!

Mark Fillingham

Hilarious. ♥

Jason Scade

YES! Darkplace is a cult classic. It's so good. I believe one of the reasons we didn't get more of it was because it was actually quite costly to make. The amount of effort required to make everything look amateurish was really hard to pull off, lol.

Menty

The way Richard always looks at the camera cracks me up.

Adam Druett

Agreed, Man to Man with Dean Learner is a must after Dark Place.

Stephen

There were two extra features on the DVD featuring the in-character interviews, "Bloody Books - Garth and The Horror Novel" and "Making Garth Marenghi's Dark Place", with a runtime of about 30 mins each.

Stephen

Holy bejesus this is wackadoodledoo

Julian T

Ah I love your channel , barely know anyone british who watched this but you always know what to watch

Adam Williams

Damn, I never put together that Liz was the woman Roy dates when he gets "shit" on his forehead!

Manly Stump

This is what happens when you combine the worst writing, the worst actors, and the most inept film crew on the smallest budget. Hilarious.

Bruce Bowden

Great to see The Queen, especially being worried that this might scare her at the beginning. Wait till the Scotch mist. Then you'll be terrified.

Neal Murdoch

There's so many brilliant little touches to Dark Place, which sometimes get missed on first viewing. Such as this episode towards the end, where you can see one of the gravestones wobbling in the wind. 😂

Jay

I said to him this will make a lot of people happy haha! Dont worry he doesn't binge record them, usually a day or 2 before its posted I think

Craig McCulloch

Never seen it, don’t think I’d have enjoyed it half as much watching on my own either, so thank you! My other half has no sense of humour whatsoever so won’t watch this stuff with me. Cough (the smoking room & how not to live your life)

MarkC

Great reaction! There's so many little things to spot, you could rewatch multiple times and see something new :)

Chris Mortlock

Does anyone know what the bonus episode was called? I forget, but there was definitely something that was a half hour to an hour or so "making of" (in character, not a real one).

Z is for Zed

It takes a lot of talent to make a show look this bad. A masterclass in terrible production.

jon d

Yaaaassss! This show is legendary! ("Never take drugs")

Tom Clancy

I'll get a mop

Dryfesands

Man to man with Dean learner is the second part of this and it's like knowing you knowing me!

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

A 'Swift & Western' sounds like Taylor Swifts gun of choice during her country music era. (Sorry, terrible joke, couldn't resist!).

AdamMcAdamface

Glad you both enjoyed that. There was a follow up show called Man To Man with Dean Learner, it’s a parody of late night talk shows but it’s hosted by Dean Learner (Ayoade). Garth Marenghi (Matthew Holeness) is a guest on it and it’s all mostly the same cast, Matt Berry appears, and although they couldn’t top this show it’s still well worth it if you end up loving this show.

James Ellison

A few minutes in and he injures himself to Darkplace. Instant karma for subjecting Queen Boomer to a horror comedy! (Turns out she loves it though! It is seriously good).

AdamMcAdamface

Given their reaction to this first episode of batshit insanity and silliness, I think they're ready for "Look Around You" at least. Plus KB loves Peter, so he's already ahead on that level.

Phil Robinson

Very talented lady - she also co-wrote and starred in the films "Sightseers" and "Prevenge", which are both excellent.

Phil Robinson

Didn't think you'd enjoy it as much as you seemed too, it's a specific taste I think, very glad you're watching it, love this show!

Dan Smith

Now you have to watch Look Around You and Man To Man With Dean Learner

Joe Blakeley

Never clicked on anything so fast - absolutely brilliant reaction, so much fun. So happy you both enjoyed it. Now I need to go back and replay every moment where KB lost his shit. What I will say is, don't binge it (recording wise, I mean) - keep it weekly, as in my opinion binging too many episodes doesn't really work, and it's not how it was intended to be watched, the joke starts to wear off if you do that. Allow some distance between watching each episode, and you'll have a blast with it.

Phil Robinson

Yes! Finally! Can’t wait for this 😁

Andrew

There's a head on the floor..."why does he have a shovel in his room"?

R Lawrence

You probably won't recognise Alice Lowe, she has popped up in the IT Crowd and Black Books, Hot Fuzz and was also the old American lady in Harry Enfield's 'American Tourists' sketches.

MrPhil_K

I think this was the first thing I saw Matt Berry in, and the dubbing effect made me question if that was even his real voice! Also I sometimes wonder how KB functions in society, I'm picturing him having a laughing fit in a cinema, running to the exit and smashing his head on the way out!

David Lyons

I think Queen Boomer needs to stop eating cheese, or anything else, right before bed.

R Lawrence

"If something ever happens, I'm going to find myself a 'buddy'." Along with the multiple videos mentioning how good a movie Brokeback is, this is all falling into place...

Z is for Zed

I remember after watching it on tv. I went out and got the dvd. So funny

John Prescott

So glad you're finally doing this show and with Queen Boomer no less! I'm glad you guys seemed to enjoy it, roll on to the next episode!

Jon Burkitt

There's another 6 part linked series called 'Man to Man with Dean Learner', it's a chat show and Garth Marenghi is the guest in episode 1.

Mark Jones

The first KB reaction injury? You know it’s going to be a great series!

Jon

Woohoo this was one of my guesses when you said only 6 episodes, can't wait for this!!!

Mark Jones

It's not that many episodes but there is a spin off

Arthur Goonie

Oh good..I missed this when it came out...look forward to seeing for the first time with you

Paul Liversage

Woo finally! Can't wait to watch later

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Yes! Top choice!

Richard Stokes

I predicted this! You gave a good clue when you said it was only 6 episodes! Only I will know that I'm not lying :(

Jamie

Can't watch until a bit later but I am so fucking excited you're watching this

George Harvey

You absolute beauty! I had a feeling this was the one you meant- delighted to have it confirmed. All-time great cult masterpiece.

Graeme Meek

Get in!! Will watch this later! Good choice!

Duncan Hart

Oh, you little beauty. I'll be watching this tonight!

Neal Murdoch

When you said it was a show you had seen clips from previously I had my fingers crossed it was going to be Snuff Box. But this is just as good!

Seltro1

Yes! Been waiting for this one. You two will both love how bonkers it is.
