Paul Cole

I’m born and bred in Colchester. If you’re interested in civil war history check out the siege of Colchester. The Castle today is a museum and always worth a visit. If you can get a guide to take you on a tour of the grounds/gardens and surrounding areas, the history is staring at you almost around every corner.

Paul Cole

REEDS!

Andy Williams

Stephen Fry as king Charles is doing a fairly good impression of the present day Prince Charles as he was then, king now

Yaapsdad

Back and forth is by far the worst Blackadder

Yaapsdad

It's not hatred of English bud it's pointing out the crimes of a mad man . Mass slaughter of people. Anyway not the time or place.

Aiden Carolan

As someone from an Irish and English family...Cromwell is a far more complex figure than most history teaches. Understanding that could bring the English and Irish together as brothers instead of the continuing hatred which exists. We have more in common than most are willing to accept.

Michael K

There is more Blackadder, if you can find it. Last Year a channel here in the UK called GOLD showed Blackadder - The Lost Pilot. It was made before Blackadder 1 as, you guessed it, a pilot, along with a documentary hosted by Tony Robinson that was never televised. I think you will find it interesting . Also, Blackadder - The Whole Rotten Saga is a good documentary about the televised Blackadder series.

Sam Skinner

As an Irish man . Cromwell was an evil c#nt .

Aiden Carolan

Yes to Blackadder: Back and Forth!

settopboxing

I recommend Blackadder back and forth, I really think you will enjoy it

Little Jimmy

You know what, maybe i made a mistake I think. Is it the one where Colin firth plays Shakespeare and black adder, cause he's travelling through time and they meet, shouts at him?

R Lawrence

I give him a free pass for Back and Forth though given that it was specifically made for screening to visitors at the Millennium Dome so the humour was always going to be broadened wasn't it? As for any other relative failings, no comment 😄

Stuart Gunpowder

His accent is quite soft, If I had to place it I'd say it's about Wiltshire. once you go past there in Somerset (I'm from there) Devon, Cornwall and up Brizzle with Gloucester it gets more defined with rhotic Rs, commonly associated with farming, pirates and the origins of the American accents. Still to this day on Ocracoke Island off the coast of North Carolina lives a small inhabitancy with the closest American-English accent sounds extremely Cornish (meaning Cornwall) just with a lil southern drawl in there. Vid for reference: https://youtu.be/x7MvtQp2-UA

Geraint Harrison

OK, Tony Robinson DID actually come into contact with a fist, this time.

Joe Thornhill

Were you thinking of Devon, regarding Cromwell's accent ?

Joe Thornhill

God, I completely forgot about Spaced, lol. Please get to Red Dwarf first though, it's been far too long.

Joe Thornhill

Blackadder back and forth, 1 inbetweeners, 1 fresh meat and 2 spaced then they're all finished. I think everything else your watching has 10-15 episodes left including any specials

ryung246

yes watch back and forth then you will have seen it all and can judge for yourself if its any good

Markos

Also King Charles I is being portrayed as Prince Charles (as was = now King Charles III)

ROBERT BOOTH

Oliver Cromwell was born in Huntingdon, just north of Cambridge in an area called the Fens, on the south-east side of England. This area and the rest of East Anglia (Norfolk and Suffolk) have what we would call a country accent, more rural with it's 'burrr', similar to the South-west of England.

Fordy7169

Only a muppet would tell you not to watch Back and Forth.

(Just) Steve

I would say yes to Back and Forth, I remember it being alright enough.

LyingSecret

As you’ve watched the rest you should absolutely watch Back and Forth

Kieran B

Cromwell (broadly) has an East Anglian accent as that’s where he was from

Kieran B

Me too, especially the effeminate French soldiers.

Richard M

I really enjoyed Back & Forth. I didn't see it at the time it was released as it had a very poor reception. I watched it recently out of curiosity and it was nowhere as bad as people had made out. It's got some great moments and I think you should watch it. Is it as good as Series 3&4? No, but personally I think it's better than series 1. Up to you - but i think it's worth a watch .

Duncan Hart

If you've watched the dreadful first season, you have to watch Back and Forth! While it's not the best, it is still miles better than season 1!

BurmaCuWin

Do you see that Stephen Fry is doing an impression of Prince Charles ? (was Prince then anyway).

R Lawrence

He maybe has the slightest hint of west country but I wouldn't have even noticed if you hadn't mentioned it and made me listen out for it.

R Lawrence

Maybe it was because they wanted to put Cromwells head on display in that place, I can't remember it's name.

R Lawrence

I agree with all of this. Do it, KB, please. Also, shout out for 'I, Claudius' (1976). Epic award winning BBC drama about Ancient Rome and its early history. Has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Stars Derek Jacobi, Brian Blessed, Patrick Stewart and many more. From Wiki ; I, Claudius follows the history of the early Roman Empire, narrated by the elderly Roman Emperor Claudius, from the year 24 BC to his death in AD 54. The series opens with Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome, attempting to find an heir, and his wife, Livia, plotting to elevate her son Tiberius to this position. An expert poisoner, Livia uses the covert assassination and betrayal of her rivals to achieve her aims, beginning with the death in 22 BC of Marcellus. The plotting, double-crossing and murder continue for many decades, through the reign of Tiberius, the political conspiracy of his Praetorian Prefect Sejanus and the depraved rule of the lunatic emperor Caligula, culminating in the accidental rise to power of his uncle Claudius. Claudius' enlightened reign is marred by the betrayals of his adulterous wife Messalina and his boyhood friend Herod Agrippa. Eventually, Claudius comes to accept the inevitability of his assassination and consents to marrying his scheming niece, Agrippina the Younger, clearing the way for the ascent of his mad stepson, Nero, whose disastrous reign Claudius vainly hopes will bring about the restoration of the Roman Republic.

Good reaction, loved seeing this again. 12:10 Cool tee. :) The opening credits narration was done by Harry Enfield, I recognized his voice. The actor playing Oliver Cromwell was in 'A Clockwork Orange' as one of Alex's droog gang members. He's also in 'Firefox' with Clint Eastwood and played the father of Amy / 'The Shadow', the masked highway robber in 'Blackadder III'. After the Bladders' specials have finished, a really enjoyable and funny Rowan Atkinson sitcom is 'The Thin Blue Line' from the mid 90s, it's set in a police station. Written by Ben Elton and it only has two series. You'll love it. Especially a dickish, loud mouthed detective character who can't stand people "Fannying about!". 😂😂😂

Jason Scade

Plebs, The Witchfinder, Upstart Crow, Ghosts, Our Flag Means Death, Year Of The Rabbit. Had quite a few historical comedies recently. Blackadder would still fly for the most part.

RobJFH

Black adder back and forth is the death of Ben Elton. Its the first time he started trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. You remember when Ricky Gervais shoved his face in a bowl of soup in extras. That was because of being invited to a Ben Elton written musical....even though Ben Elton used to be his favourite British satirist because of Black adder and the young ones and other stuff.

R Lawrence

Agree with most comments, Back and Forth's not the best of the Blackadder episodes but still worth a watch. Would be a shame if you don't complete the collection.

Mackem

I liked Back and Forth

Carly

People told you to not watch S1 and you enjoyed it so I’m not it’ll be better than that. If not for the lore.

Owen Rhodes

I only discovered this Cavalier special existed a couple of weeks ago after reading the comments under another of your Blackadder reactions, so thank you KB! I haven't seen Back and Forth since it was on in the cinema in the Millennium Dome, which is what is was made for. I was only 16 then, and I can't remember much about it now, so I'd be happy to see a reaction!

RobJFH

Boomer, if you're interested in this period of English history, 'To kill a King' (2003) is a great movie. It's set just after the end of the civil war and focuses on the trial and execution of Charles I. It has a great cast too; Tim Roth, Rupert Everett, Olivia Williams, etc.

Colin R

I really liked Back and Forth. Not the absolute pique, but definitely worth watching.

Jase777

They'd accept it but would change the name to Multicolour-Adder and insist that 50% of the cast must be ethnic, gay or both!

BigChanChan

I noticed that and even went as far as googling whether the real one had a posh 'plums in mouth' southern English accent too. But apparently he had a Scottish twang with a slight stammer and according to some even a falsetto.

Flemish Giant

I've only seen Back and Forth once, but I don't remember it being all that bad, infact I remember really enjoying it. You should watch it.

White Dwarf

Agreeing to omit Back & Forth is like agreeing to skip series 1...but worse, as it's the last hurrah of the cast, and getting to actually see it at the time was kind of an event (was only playing in The Millennium Dome - The O2 now - so you literally had to travel to London to see it...before these new fangled things called DVDs released it a year later.

David Lyons

Back and Forth is pretty good, it's not as good as classic Blackadder and it was never going to be. But it's a fair ending to the multigenerational rises and falls of the Blackadder dynasty, and you'll see some old favourites pop back up as well!

Curse These Metal Hands!

I hadn’t noticed that! I thought he was putting on some sort of 90s politician voice with his hand gesturing and random pauses but you’re absolutely right haha

Chug

I can see why a lot of people wouldn’t like Back and Forth, there’s not the silly low budget sets and laugh track, looks more like a 30 minute modern movie at times, I’m sure a lot of purists dont consider it “real Blackadder” But it has its moments, and all the main/supporting cast feature in it, I think you’ll be surprised

Chug

The only issue I can imagine is multicam studio audience sitcoms being out of style now.

Mark Fraser

Not sure you noticed, but King Charles the First's accent (played by Stephen Fry) is an impression of the current King Charles.

Jay

You should do Back and Forth. Not the best but you did do season 1!

John Snashall

Can you imagine pitching Blackadder today?

rtkeane

Cromwell was from East Anglia, that’s a Fenland accent (or the actor’s take on one) Well spotted that it sounds like a southwestern accent, both are such remote areas that changes in how people spoke just passed these places by, hundreds of years ago the whole country sounded like that There’s a great video on YT where linguists helped reconstruct what the US Founding Fathers sounded like, you’d think you were watching Hot Fuzz haha

Chug

Do think back & forth worth a watch, not a patch on anything else blackadder but has its moments.

Scott Meadows

Back and Forth the final special and the best imo. Made in 2000 for the millenium.

makadeni123

Back and forth is great! 😃

Rob webber

I think the Cromwell accent is indeed meant to be a Forest of Dean accent, but it's obviously a bit all over the place; probably on purpose.
