What are your thoughts on the recent wave of DaBaby memes?

You should do a music iceberg video

Stadium Arcadium by the RHCP is top 5 greatest rock albums of the 21st century

Depends on if these other worldly beings also have a music critic of Anthony’s level. If so, I’m sure they’d have to duke it out live on twitch

Andrew Shaktah

X-Ambassadors are infinitely more boring than Imagine Dragons despite making the same kind of music and never getting shit on for it like ID does

Rap music between 2005-2009 was mediocre.

Pretty Hate Machine aged terribly and if I'm being honest i dont think it was ever that great. The lyrics are incredibly corny and campy (including lowpoints like "Rain Rain go away") and the vocal performances are terrible for the most part. Some of the instrumentals (Sin, Head like a Hole) are very good and keep the album from being terrible, but overall it pales in comparison to what NIN would do later and is hard to listen to and take seriously.

I feel like you might roll your eyes at this melon... Abbey Road would be a 10/10 if we cut out the chunk between track 9 and track 14. That portion of the album dips just a tad out of 10 territory. I'm not saying that section is bad though. Mean Mr. Mustard is enjoyable.

Long furbies are greater than the classic Furby.

Lucki, Eric DOA & Sebii are both going to have exponential growth over the next few years

Tom Macdonald is the worst artist to ever grace a microphone

Alley Oop by Yung Gravy & Lil Baby should’ve been a bigger song

Queens of the Stone Age are what the Foo Fighters wish they could be. They hit that balance of being accessible while still having a distinct edge, and are just far more creative. I always felt Foo Fighters was missing personality, maybe besides their debut.

I know your main thing is reviewing and covering new music, but I think a cool segment would be to give some recommendations on older stuff on the regular. Tier lists and starter packs are too few and far between.

Stefan Lal

Unpopular opinion: each Nirvana album is worse than its predecessor, and In Utero is massively overrated. I’ve never understood why that seems to be the hipster/music head go to for best Nirvana album. Nevermind had much better songwriting and Bleach is more raw IMO.

Callahan Hirrel

The biggest crime Rage Against the Machine ever committed was only existing in the Bill Clinton era

Chris Hickson

This isn’t a hot take but the new A Day to Remember album is The Big Day level bad, and is easily the worst album I’ve heard this year, even for pop punk metal core standards

Since you listen to so much music, does it ever feel weird to hear a song that was sampled in another song under its original mixing? Like, does it feel weird listening to 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson after hearing it sampled on POWER by Kanye West?

Kyle Cahill

RapTV is more influential than you

The Black Eyed Peas are underrated. First off, Behind The Front & Elephunk are solid records. Will-I-Am is an amazing producer, which also isn't recognized very much. Apl De Ap & Will I Am are both great rappers, and the black eyed peas had a lot of influence with making autotune and just making rap more popular in general

An album can have one or two "skippable" tracks and still be a 10 if the best songs on the record are amazing enough.

Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory is a classic... but Reanimation was a better album.

Rock music will never be able to be commercially successful (on the billboard charts) and also critically positive again. It will become more and more of an underground genre as time goes on

⁩alt-J crawled so that Black Country New Road and blackmidi could sprint

Among Us imposter/sus memes is by far the most unfunny trend of 2021 so far

It’s been little over two years since Denzel blessed us with his cover of Bulls on Parade and it’s time we acknowledge it as one of, if not, the greatest cover of all time. Zel’s energy and passion is unreal and his verse from SIRENS hits the flow and tone of the song beautifully

Cason Handy

If you could only do written reviews for the rest of your life would you do it? Or is your passion specific to the video/audio review format?

Saywanay .

Out of curiosity where would Building Nothing out of Something fit in your Modest Mouse tier list? It’s personally one of my favorite collections of theirs and I was sad you didn’t mention it

tryhard

I’m just getting into Death Grips now for the first time, and I feel late to the party especially after all the memes and fan-driven enthusiasm has seemingly had it’s hay day, and this trend applies to a lot of “underground” music in general, what I would describe as “self imposed gatekeeping”.

There should be a Grammy category for video game soundtracks

Filip Kaźmierczak

Only people from Long Island actually like Billy Joel

Even with all their notoriety I still feel Linkin Park don’t get enough credit for how truly groundbreaking and influential their earlier sound was. It opened the floodgates to an all new era of music in both the mainstream and underground that never would’ve existed if it weren’t for the success of their music.

Andrew Shaktah

Not a hot take, but who are your favorite hip hop youtubers?

Do you think that trip-hop will return to the mainstream in a big way over the next few years? To my ears a lot of edgier pop music seems hazy & half-conscious w/ a thick undercurrent of anxiety, which is typically a sound I associate w/ some of my favourite darker trip-hop albums (Mezzanine, Dummy, Silent Hill OSTs)

Music is more important than a lyrics in a song because great music can excuse bad lyrics while it's hard to fully enjoy a song with a bad music despite great lyrics.

Which is more important for the album experience, a good opening song or a good closing song? What are the best opener/closers of all time?

In terms of developing your channel - how do you decide what segments stay or go? Are there any segments which you thought should have been more popular than they were?

You should use the intro of your “Cringing with Dax” video in MORE videos!

Does doing interviews with artists on twitch make you feel different about your review of said artist's project? Does it affect list week?

Kyle Cahill

Having English as your second language is actually the best way to experience English music. I'm able to perfectly understand the lyrics when I actively listen but when I don't it's just sound to me. So many artists with garbage lyrics but great instrumentals suddenly become listenable!

Emiel Verhoef

if life from other planets came to visit and they show us their music would you then be called universes busiest music nerd?

Yes god I would kill for this

Drake Parker

The little random chuckles you’ve been letting out at the start of your reviews lately is getting annoying. What’s so funny? Do you think this is a joke?

Drake Parker

Carnage was my introduction to Nick Cave. Do you think that was a good place to start?

Abbey Road should have been the last beatles album. It's a much more consistent album, more impactful and groundbreaking than let it be. In addition it's also the last thing they recorded together and I think it's a much more fitting send off than let it be, which is still a great album btw

Adam mezzarone

Zach De La Rocha should’ve been on your top 55 rappers of all time list. Imho, his impact on the hiphop/hard rock/political landscape is only a few of the abundance of reasons why he was such an acceptable artist. He should’ve been on the list as opposed to Nikki Manaj who has never put out an album that was at least above average in my opinion

Nathaniel Zaccagnini

India's influence on western music is talked about very little if not at all, a lot of the experimental elements of rock and jazz relied heavily on sounds and aesthetics from India. Especially during the 60s for Rock and the 70s for Jazz. Psychedelic music would not be what it is without Indian culture especially it's aesthetics.

If you had given MBDTF a light 7 people would not care at all about the review

Noah W

Anthony should do drag. He has that smooth, featureless exterior that makes the perfect canvass for wigs, makeup, and all things glamour. His drag name would be Melody Cheesecake.

Trevor Young

If the first few tracks on an album were shit, would you still listen to the record all the way through? (If you weren’t reviewing it of course)

Stefan Lal

Sonic Highways is too overhated, when in fact it is one of the best Foo Fighters albums. Not every album in their discography is as diverse as SH, and not many FF albums can boast songs as beautiful as I Am a River and Outside.

Blood Incantation deserved a real review

For the First Time by Black Country, New Road is the first 10/10 of the decade in my opinion. Every track takes me on a uniquely gratifying journey. Brilliant record.

Weezer's Red Album is a lot better than people give it credit.

Can only speak for myself, but while many of my favorite albums of other genres tend to live and die by the linear journey and progression they curate, the noise (and ambient) projects I’m personally drawn to tend to have some sort of defined atmosphere or a sculpture / painting quality to them. When you admire physical art, you consider the feelings it draws up in you, the tangential thoughts it leads you to, and if you feel enveloped in the world it invites you inside of. In the same way I can paint three lines on a blank canvas and call it Mona Lisa 2, any Bandcamp Joe can slam seven layers of distorted drums on each other and call it noise record of the decade. Wild noise should not be the main metric of good noise. Admittedly it can be hard to ground yourself in these genres because you’re operating without familiar song structure or the musicality of more conventional sounds. But at the end of the day it’s like this: In any genre you have to ask, do you enjoy THAT specific curation of music? More than just liking the novelty of some of the sounds? Has what you heard emotionally shifted you in any direction? I would start there. A few interesting ingredients can make a stew taste like a whole lotta bad if those ingredients are skittles, red cabbage, and a liter of Jack Daniels. Hope this provides some perspective. TL:DR - Don’t consider the ingredients as much, consider the stew.

igor is one of if not the best soul album of the 21st century so far

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is the best album by The Cure. While Disintegration was a magnum opus of honing in on that goth synth wave sound, Kiss Me is a lot more eclectic and varied in its styles. There are pop songs, new wave, harder rock songs, and experimental tracks that are layered with dense, theatrical synths and production that encapsulate what the band does best. There are some moments where Smith is just screaming his brains out over the band's erratic playing, and it all makes for an era-defining listen.

Josh Brown

I can definitely agree with this, but I feel the phrase "hindsight is 20/20" applies here. Good take!

That's a hot take? That album hit goated status for a lot of people, I feel.

Spyro the Dragon > Crash Bandicoot.

Office Policy

Jethro Tull's Minstrel In The Gallery is underrated. It's a great mix of hard rock and orchestral instrumentation that all comes together to create a memorable "ye olde" vibe

Triple 9

For people who listen to harsh noise, what makes any album in the genre any better or worse than any other? What does a bad harsh noise project look like?

Caden Meyer

Failure's Fantastic Planet is the greatest record to come from the grunge movement. It is a remarkably creative meditation on drug abuse and social isolation that gradually evolves from grounded 90s alt-rock into much spacier excursions, representing a drug user's gradual disconnect from the world around them. Every song manages to tackle the aforementioned themes in unique ways, which is impressive given how ubiquitous they are in popular music. Their ambitious approach produced a more powerful and significant artistic statement than even the best records of their more popular contemporaries.

beammeupjosi

Everything Everything is one of the most underrated bands over the last 6-8 years, a good strong discography (for the most part), fantastic vocals, and very interesting and diverse instrumentation and good lyrics.

Alex Alcalde

Where has your actual needle been dropping lately? Focus, Anthony!

Fried Tofu is better than seasoned tofu.

Music is basically a legal drug you can use to change your emotional, mental and physical state. The great part is we can mostly control the effect by choosing what music to listen to. Except those poorly chosen grocery store playlists that induce soul-crushing flashbacks and leave you weeping in the cereal aisle at 11pm. That sucks.

Jac

I was thinking the Neighbours theme song.

Jac

Fair observation so why not go listen to the album then watch the review?

Jac

Nope, *actually* we need him to do more guest spots.

Joey Bada$$ needs to drop something very soon or he'll risk becoming irrelevant. His last album was great, but it didn't reach the heights of a Good Kid or a Damn. where he could wait like four or five years and return without missing a beat. The absence has been so significant now that whatever he drops next will need to be spectacular or he'll risk becoming a footnote.

Sean L Byrne

The fact that Head Hunters is a stone cold classic despite how absolutely awful the (synthesized?) pan flute on the its version of Watermelon Man sounds proves how genius the album is. One extremely poor production choice on a prominent track amplifies the impact of the rest of the record’s bold ideas. Do you have any favorite examples of a perceived flaw in a record serving to intriguingly contrast its strengths?

Kegan Padot

You often say that your rating system is based on your enjoyment of a particular record. Does this mean the rate at which you listen to those records falls in accordance with that system? Or is your reality more like mine, where I will find myself listening to music that a critic would give 6-8 scores more than I would listen to those 9s or 10s? For example, yes I know the Swans and Death Grips are probably the "better" and more "challanging" artists, but I'd rather listen to a band like the Spits more often than not.

how do you as a music reviewer and as a listener separate the art from the artist? do you do it in a professional capacity only and when you listen to music casually/for your own enjoyment do you have a harder time doing it?

Why is the black metal scene to elitist? It's like if a band takes inspiration from a genre outside of metal it's heresy (ex: Deafheaven)

When you listen to music for the purpose of reviewing it, do you listen on the highest quality/most appropriate audio equipment for that piece of music you own or do you listen to it in such a way that you think matches the majority of listeners' aural experience? Or do you do both? And if I can also ask, what are your general thoughts on Spotify hifi? Keep up the great content as always!

Dubstep (and other forms of bass music) is often GROSSLY overlooked in the grand scheme of things in the music industry. It had its big moment in the early 2010s and then fizzled out by 2015ish. But now in 2021, people in the scene are putting out some of the most creative and interesting music right now. Some examples being, Space Laces, Phonon, Aweminus, Akeos just to name a few.

Floof Queen Emily

What was the best thing that you ate during quarantine if you can remember?

JUSTICE FOR GOOD LONG ALBUMS. It’s far too easy of a layup to criticize albums that are “too long”. Without fail, anytime a recently released album’s runtime exceeds 70 minutes, you cough and bump into the line of RYM members/Pitchfork staff/general music fans foaming at the mouth to call it bloated (likely with having only given the full thing a passing first listen, or not having listened through much of it all). No, you don’t need to listen to the entire 100 minutes of Culture II to know that it’s going to continue stream-grabbing ad nauseam, and, yes, ear fatigue exists (even though no one is saying you have to listen to any of these projects in one sitting). Just the same though, is every inch of Sandanista! or To Be Kind or All Eyez on Me or Shaking the Habitual or 69 Love Songs or The Epic (or more recently DJ Sabrina, Matmos, AG Cook) as essential as the last? No, but the runtime allows those artists to worldbuild, vibe out, explore, get loose, and experiment - a special experience not every album can give you, nor an experience every album is supposed to give you. Let alone a “properly short” one. Sum > parts.

Vroom Vroom should be the UK national anthem once monarchy is abolished

Your reviews aren’t very good to listen to when the viewer hasn’t listened to the album being discussed. Idk why but it’s just harder to follow/understand the reasoning. I usually just look at the score and skidaddle

Noah W

Cafe Tacvba, being greatly underrated in the States, while considered one of the greatest rock bands in Latin American history, is a crime to many music fans / nerds as they have a sound and discography that would appeal to many fans of indie rock, art rock, and fans of colorful, fun, catchy music as a whole. Along with this, Reves / Yo Soy is one of the most creative rock albums of the 90s.

Wingus McDingus

you should do a series of anti-classic reviews where you go over notoriousy bad albums of the past i think it would be very entertaining (at your expense)

Froggoking

does an artist's actions effect how you listen to the music, or should we separate the art from the artist?

imo jesus is king is not as bad as everyone says it is. it has some weak moments, but a lot of the songs are good (selah, follow god, use this gospal)

Do you think that historical accuracy should be considered when evaluating and criticizing shows, movies, or music, or does it depend on the subject matter? For example, The Greatest Showman and Hamilton both get praise for their music, but I believe that the accuracy of their depictions compared to what their characters did in real life should at least be called into question.

Matthew Wisniewski

I used to be an immense red hot chili peppers fan, but I can't listen to many of there songs anymore because of all the weak Anthony Kiedes vocal performances and pervy lyrics. I can think of plenty of well written songs and believe that he's a capable lyricist, but it seems he too often prefferred to ruin a decent instrumental by poorly singing about his penis. Plus the whole thing with him fucking a 14 year old girl makes a lot of the lyrics even harder to get down with.

Caco

I also made my living from youtube and this is topic I think a lot. As a content creator who criticise music how can you stay in touch with the ever changing music landscape? When will be strange that someone from a very different generation criticize the culture of the youth? Could you even notice if you lost your edge without someone point it out from the outside? Do you fear that a time will come when you can't keep up and stay in touch with the music industry like a lot of people as time go? And what do you actively do against it? (English is not my native language, but I tried my best)

What long broken up band would you be most excited to see a reunion tour from?

You need to debate James Acaster on his claim about 2016.

Philip Walsh

Tier lists are so much better than worst to best because the former provides a better gauge into how strong an artist’s discography truly is - placement within the continuum (F-S) and explanations - as opposed to the former where the audience automatically assumes the worst is simply “not listenable” and vice versa. In essence, tier lists add another dimension that a worst to best cannot.

Jonathan Beltran

How often do you listen to a record like Blond or You Won’t Get What You Want AFTER you have reviewed them? When a record is longer and stands out above the rest for whatever reasons, do you circle back to them at the end of the year or are they a year long listen? I personally try to only listen to a special record once in a while to try and preserve those feelings from the first listen.

Tyler Gregory

how do you feel about artists that don't like you due to bad reviews you've given them in the past?

Arca is one of the most creative and innovative musicians we have right now. She might not be someone who clicks at first listen to everyone but you can't deny her talent and genre bending vision. And let's not talk about her look and aesthetic, the b*tch is stunning.

The addition of live strings to a song is a musical cheat code. Even if they are used in a campy or overly dramatic way, the emotive nature of a string section almost always hits me in the sweet spot of my brain. I can’t help but love it, even if the song is trash.

austin

have you read Robert Christgau's positive reviews of albums you despise (Professional Rapper, The Big Day, Southside)? do his opinions give you a different appreciation for those records or do they make you feel like the Dean of Rock Criticism is way off base and/or out of touch?

HIM is one of the most under appreciated goth rock bands ever. Yes...they could be corny, their fans can be lame, and one of the Jackass guys popularized them in the States. However, they still boast some of the most infectious guitar work in the Gothic music realm and Ville Vallo is one of the best vocalists and lyricists in rock history. They're one of the biggest bands to come out of Finland and I think it's time to put some respect on the name (Also shoutout to Myke C Town for being the reason I found out about this band).

Blu & exile’s below the heavens is easily a top 5 hip hop album of all time

Any thoughts on a Stoney re-review? A lot of those takes seem not to have aged well, and I don’t really see how you can like BB&B so much without finding SOMETHING to like about that album

Glad you released this month‘s thread in conjunction with your god-awful review of the new Architects album.

Paul Prete

Is there a reason you don't often cover live albums? There has been a handful of incredible live albums the last few years (Thanks, Sorry! by Jeff Rosenstock, Live at Vicar Street by Girl Band, and A Beautiful Thing by IDLES) and I was curious why they don't get much coverage on the channel. Is this a personal disinterest in live albums or is it more related to content/views?

King Crimson in way more influential than Pink Floyd in retrospect

Minyoung Kim

Poison and Warrant are to rock music what Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti are to hip-hop: mindless fun. My girlfriend and I discussed this at length, but I think a comparison of hair metal and trap music, especially Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert's brand of trap, can be made. (Aesthetic, subject matter, musical ethos, etc)

Do you think we'll ever actually get Club Blackdust music?

SAMIR

Have any records that you've given a 9 or less grown on you to become 10s?

Most classic albums would be 8s if released today. Being the first to do a sound doesn’t make them the best.
