I was wondering how this would come across to a US viewer, and came to the comments before watching so that I would be prepared for any negative reaction! As others have said, this episode and the ending has absolutely iconic status in the UK and that’s not just due to our different cultural expectations but the lasting impact of the Great War on this country. Britain lost 6% of its adult male population in WW1, and the brutal impact on families here has been perceptible throughout the last century so it feels very close in cultural memory. Just in my own family, there was a great-uncle who won a medal for valor in that war and then deserted due to shell shock, and another who was gassed and never truly recovered, and those stories are still shared. We have so many WW1 memorials and sites here - even our local high school was a WW1 military hospital and a nearby building was its morgue. Poppies also have an instant meaning to everyone here and are still our symbol of the fallen.
Because it still feels so close, a lot of people were actually really uncomfortable about a comedy being made about this. But the ending was what finally made it truly beloved and respected.
It’s been great rewatching this series along with you KB and seeing your take on it all. Thanks for sharing it with us 😊

There is an alternate ending to this, Baldrick is the first to die, followed by Darling, George, and the rest of the cast. Blackadder, who was only pretending to be dead, gets up and returns to the trench for safety. But they decided to end it this way to Honour those who gave up thier today for our tomorrow. "Lest We Forget, The Glorious Dead."

With all of the various iterations of Blackadder, he exists firmly in the middle of a well-established hierarchy of characters, with those above him with whom he is always trying to curry favour or usurp in some way, those technically equal to him who he has little time for and uses to his advantage, and those below him who he treads all over. However, with Series 4 the odds are just too stacked against him, with his ultimate aim not money or power or influence, but just to survive the whole thing, and with that in mind the conversation at the end with George, Darling and Baldrick about their fears of going over the top is a very moving moment as it is a true leveller for all of them. Suddenly, any sense of hierarchy disappears and all we are left with is 4 scared human beings. His last line "Who'd notice another madman around here? Good luck everyone" is pretty much the only time in 4 series Blackadder makes a genuinely caring comment to anyone, and that makes it devastating. It's brilliant, brilliant writing.

Is quite recent since you've watched the film 1984 so maybe an ending like that was a bit too heavy for you Brian and I understand that I think that in the right headspace it is a commendable finale and you could possibly fully appreciate I feel that was very touching the way that they understood that it was right to add some emotional levity to what I truly vile and pointless war the First World War eventually was and always was And the writing didn’t shy away from the pointless tragedy that ensued 'cause a kaiser a tsar and a king couldn't get on no one just because of nepotism should have that much power to declare such a tragic war but yeah I would prescribe to you some Will Ferrell movies lift up your spirit and your hopes and always leaves a sweet taste in your mouth

Yes, the poppies, (or plastic models of them are wonderful by main in the UK, usually twice a year - Armistice Day, on November 11th, and Remembrance Sunday, on the nearest Sunday to the 11th. You usually obtain a plastic poppy by putting a donation in a collection tin at shops, markets, organisations etc, and those funds/proceeds are sent to the Royal British Legion charity. People are encouraged to observe a two minute silence at 11am on either Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday, or both. Of course, some years those two occasions occur on the same date.

I wouldn’t say I was not impressed. It was a good episode for sure. Was I caught off guard? Absolutely 100%. I was not expecting a sad ending but as Kit said it’s probably because WW2 is much more engrained in everyone’s minds here in the states. Sadly WW1 is almost forgotten here, nearly to the point the Korean War is.

This episode is a textbook example of the difference between US and UK comedy. A US comedy would have probably led to our heroes getting out of the push with some fantastic witty scheme whereas as you see, the UK way is to show them tragically meeting their (expected) end. Neither narrative is overwhelmingly better than the other but just typical of what respective audiences expect

The reality is that the First World War is probably a far bigger scar on the collective British psyche than the Second. It seems an odd thing to say, but in terms of proportional losses and the affects on society its' in many ways the architect of how Britain is today culturally and socially.
It's also worth remembering that when this episode was broadcast in late 1989 there were still elderly veterans of the conflict watching.
Hence the decision to make this final episode more sombre and tragic.
I think it's very well done as a piece of drama. The comedy starts to gently fade out as the episode goes on to be replaced with pathos and a gnawing anxiety. The writing and performances are all spot on.

The Americans still lost 50,000 soldiers or so in WW1, so it's not entirely unrelatable. It just gets overshadowed by the US's dramatically larger involvement in WW2. But yeah as you say the First World War trenches are pretty ingrained into British cultural memory.
Kit Taylor

I don't think I've ever seen anyone watch this episode and fail to be impressed. It's an opinions game of course, but I personally think this is one of the greatest 30 minutes in tv history. It's funny throughout, but poignant and respectful with incredible writing and acting by everyone involved. I don't see how, given the subject matter, that ending could be covered in any other way. there's certainly no way you could expect the ending to be funny. Glad you enjoyed it on the whole though

Gutted..... you know I thought as much. I had heard that, even asking about such a tier for the delectable Queen Boomer, would result in fellow Patreons praying nightly for the death of said deviant. That was never even a consideration - I did it would be permissable, asking KB if access to that tier would be affordable, especially since I have heard fantastic rumours about his intros for those videos..... supposedly containing scenes of gratuitous 'plate spinning' action. The most viewed reaction on that tier is a 'How do they poke the holes in doughnuts?' featurette, which is said to have caused both explosive orgasms and projectile vomiting, for viewers of that video but that may be a wind up.

I mean it's World War 1, where millions lost their lives arguably with little point. How does a comedy program deal with this? Cheerfully?! This is a respectful and moving episode, worth watching again now you know what to expect. Perhaps without the weight of expectation you might appreciate more how tonally sensitive this was.

The last episode was heavy hitting because the comedy writers didn't want the subject of WW1 to end on a joke. For me it perfectly walks a fine line between comedy and pathos, and I think you were in the mindset of wanting a hilarious ending, which is possibly why you didn't enjoy this one as much as the others.
The interesting thing about this episode is that you see the human side of Darling, as he's essentially a different side of the same coin as Blackadder. Both are trying to avoid fighting and dying over such a meaningless war, even though they're at odds with eachother throughout the series.
Despite Blackadder despising every character throughout the series, In this episode you see him treat them as equals, knowing that they're all victims of a terrible war. The resigned "good luck everyone" comment at the end makes that point effectively. The other comment from Blackadder - "who would have noticed another madman round here?" still hits hard to this day. I think it's one of the most effective anti war commentaries ever made, disguised as a comedy.

Many people think this is the greatest ending in sitcom history. It was a shock when first aired, and is even shown in schools. As the episode goes on the characters become less comedic and more human, revealing their hopes and fears. This ending will stay with you. If you and Queen Boomer come to Europe, I recommend you visit Ypres or the Somme. It becomes very real. Blackadder, George and Baldric will be there in spirit with you.

This hammered my small town and many other like it. Listened to tales from my Grandma of boys and relatives not coming back, families halved. Blackadder did a good job ripping the ass off it. This Robert Graves quote reminds me of Blackadder - 'Patriotism in the trenches was too remote a sentiment, and at once rejected as fit only for civilians or prisoners, A new arrival who talked patriotism would soon be told to cut it out.'

When they recorded the last scene, the audience was laughing because it looked quite silly at full speed as they threw themselves around a flimsy set. The producers weren't happy with it so they added the slow motion, sad music and fade to the poppy field in editing.

Many years ago I visted some of the Western Front battlefields and cemeteries in France and Belgium, and the Menin Gate at Ypres. It was...heavy.
If you haven't already then I highly recommend reading the Siegfried Sassoon novel Memoirs Of A Fox-Hunting Man, which is very much along the theme of George's reminiscences about the tiddlywinking leapfroggers, their subsequent fates, and the end of innocence and the idyll of Edwardian Britain brought about by the outbreak of war. Like George, Sassoon had also been at Cambridge (although he'd dropped out and spent several years kicking around writing and playing cricket) and had joined the army on the same day war was declared, and walked straight into the commissioned ranks through his background and social connections.

Poppies at the end are used following WW1 is due to the poem ‘In Flanders Fields‘ Also, the reason why poppies are such a symbol and chosen is because they are the first flower that grew on the former fields used in the war.
