Music videos have lost their relevancy due to the popularity of streaming services.

ODB is in the top 1 of Wu Tang members unironically.

It's good for sure, way better than Anthony gave it credit for, but it is not better than Souvlaki

Jokes on you he'd already died 40 years ago ;)

Ryan The Great

rodeo is a classic.

henry hanlin

lol holy shit what

Fleetwood Mac has the most underrated debut album of all time

I'm no Arianna stan or anything, but what the fuck

Cupcake

What’re you benching these days?

Chris Hickson

Arianna Grande would only be another Drake if not for the tragedies that she faced and end up making good music out of.

Nathaniel Zaccagnini

the scene of 2010's post punk is the strongest rock's segment nowdays, with numerous bands that are consistenly good and they're having a huge potential to influence future bands and keeping the genre alive

Sung Tongs > Merriweather Post Pavilion

paul mccartney will pass away on august 17th

Michael Jackson is one of the biggest industry plants in music business history.

Dylan Brady > George Martin

Hey, that’s my favorite too

Pontus Hruska

A majority of hard core basketball fans think record sales constitute an album's greatness and it is truly annoying.

Caspa

What would be some good examples of a “Dylan Goes Electric” moment in music? Either hypothetical or real. Mine would be Kurt Cobain making a dubstep album.

Michael Jackson’s first posthumous album ‘Michael’ contains 3 fraudulent songs sung by an impostor and it seems that nobody gives a fuck!! It’s a huge scandal and shows how corrupt music companies (Sony in this case) are

Just a Little Boy is the best song off of To Be Kind and it's not even close. The steady and dramatic buildup to the powerful baseline that punctuates the end of the song is masterful. The constant chaos of other tracks from that album like Oxygen and Screen Shot just don't feel nearly as deliberate, subtle, or meaningful. Great album overall though

Have there been any 9s you've consider to be a 10 at this point like david bowies Blackstar

Ryan The Great

Do you think big budget album rollouts will return late this year or early next year?

HAVVIK

Phil Ochs is one of if not the most underrated folk singer in US history and the lack of hype around him today is tragic

I was really surprised by the channel's decision to continue reviewing Lana Del Ray's music! Anthony's justification that "some music publications won't cover an artist who does terrible things because it's a promotional game," was very enlightening for me. While Lana certainly hasn't acted as poorly as other artists outside of music, her very obvious and public stance (that the work of artists who make Black American Music are not "real songs," especially when those artists are women) is not the kind of private or personal issue that, say, an abuse relationship is, because it's a stance that is presented in the music. Of course Lana's collaborations with rappers has gone poorly, because she doesn't think they can write songs, the sounds they make/use are just clout machines for her benefit. Of course her lyrics center on romanticizing patriarchal positions, because pro-black and pro-sex music are not "real songs," to her. It's a really obvious anti-black position, and it's surprising that the channel sought to promote her newest work in any capacity.

Gunna makes sweet sensual love to the beat and has wayyyy more versatility with his flow and melodies than baby

Melanie Martinez....is.... .... ...a okay artist

top 1*

buckfastbjork

Saw in your WLR review that you didn't care too much for Sky Sky is the most compelling song on the album for me, its a drug anthem yes but is also representative of the self medication and drug addiction epidemic faced in not only rap today but the world in general I think its actually subtly profound and meaningful, while also viscerally raw and disturbingly dark in its simplicity and honesty with how emotionally numb and cold he becomes Its one of those songs and musical moments that captures the zeitgeist and gives us the raw hideous truth of why we take drugs and how they can consume our lives and even our souls "I could fall out the sky and I still wont feel nothing", could it be his own descent into hell he has become emotionally detached and apathetic too?

buckfastbjork

The "Tree" era of theneedledrop was the most classic era

😲

Kyle Cahill

Loved your reviews of Madeon's "Good Faith" and Flume's "Hi This is Flume" but you tend to miss most of the best and major EDM releases. No G Jones "Ineffable Truth", No RL Grime "Nova", No Getter "Visceral, No Zeds Dead "Northern Lights", ect. The edm community would love to hear more from you!

i think its possible that those two are 10s, but i believe the justification he gave for that video is the LCD and Charli records are contextually more complete albums, as opposed to KSG which is pretty much an EP, even though he liked KSG more

MeowmiXX

This is kind of a follow up to the last let's argue about all your 10s still being 10s. Are there any albums that you would give a 10 in retrospect. I ask cuz in yiur decade end list, LCD Soundsystem and Charli XCX ranked higher than KSG. Are those 10s or is KSG a 9?

Kyle Cahill

Bar for bar, Kendrick didn’t have the best Control verse and the only reason it has so much traction is because of the namedrops. Jay Electronica’s flow and Big Sean’s bars are way better.

Drake Parker

With Vaporwave turning 10 years old this year, it seems to become more relevant with each year (despite the Vaporwave is Dead meme). While the general public may not be familiar with the genre, they are familiar with the aesthetics. Due to the slow burn nature of its popularity, it seems Vaporwave is here to stay instead of being a flash in the pan.

First Melon President of History Strong 10

Ryan The Great

If you'd reviewed wunna then it would've made me eternally happy, even tho no doubt you would've given my favourite album of the year a negative review. I used to hate gunna and I still hate lil baby but gunna is light years ahead of baby. He doesn't mumble anymore. My guy has some wordplay and slides on a beat like no other. Get with the gunna Fantano

Ryan Borthwick

Gangnam Style was a cultural reset

can we get a critical analysis of Gangnam Style and why we need a sequel

Riley Schmedeman

Thanks for introducing me to them. Re is amazing I can’t wait to listen to their other stuff

Brendan

Would you rather an artist listen to your negative review of their project, and make a great album next which takes any advice on board, or have an artist not hear your review and drop a great album in an unexpected way? Any notable scenarios where either of these has happened?

I have a hard time understanding why people seem to love albums like Physical Graffiti and The Beatles White Album when they are so bloated with filler songs. Both of those bands have much more cohesive albums that don't last 90+ minutes and prove that the ideal album length is between 35-50 minutes. Also, listening through both of those albums is such a slog...

Josh

hot take: i think eminem is... pretty good

Brian Frenzy

Hey Anthony I'm curious, do you like Thai food? I feel like its super underrated and its also very vegan friendly as most Thai food is plant based

Long Season is the best song ever made!

superdude75561

Meditations was the best John Coltrane album after A Love Supreme

The Ariel pink and Jonh Maus situation is concerning.

What are some albums you would consider doing redux reviews of? Personally, I think redux reviews of MAYA and Have One On Me would be really interesting for you to revisit, especially since it has been over a decade since they were originally released and your opinions of them have changed significantly since first reviews.

Gray Lefkowitz

It was in the top 200 decade list, it just wasn't in the top 100

Divorce lawyers I shaved my head > in the aeroplane over the sea

Lil Ugly Mane not being on the top albums of the decade was an unfortunate oversight, imo. The production on that album is almost unmatched and completely unique in its sonic qualities, and Ugly Mane's writing is simultaneously hilarious and self-aware. It's also a very versatile album, and has one of Denzel Curry's best features to date.

College Dropout needs a classic review

Tough question: what are your personal feelings on finding at the Ariel Pink was at the insurrection at the capital? I know you have rated his music pretty highly. Are you going to continue to listen to him and support him? Or how else do you reconcile this?

tryhard

People overpricing MF DOOM products on discogs are fucking disgusting

This is less of an argument and more of a general question - why do you think some artists are able to cultivate a specific following and community and others not even though an artist that doesn’t may be more talented? My best example of what I’m really asking is Britney v Christina. Britney, I think, is much more famous and beloved for her style and the general personality of her music, while Christina, who is a vocal powerhouse, went through many style evolutions and failed to gain the same foothold in pop culture. I guess I’m really talking about “X Factors,” and how they’re cultivated.

Kristin Maccarrone

Dr. Dre is the most underrated rapper/producer in history and is constantly overlooked in GOAT convos. He was part of one of the most influential groups in music ever with NWA, and released two incredible albums, The Chronic and 2001, both of which are still looked at today as the gold standard in mixing and mastering. He also founded Death Row which housed some of the most important rappers of all time such as Tupac, Snoop, Nate Dogg, Lady of Rage, and Warren G. Not to mention he found Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick, and The Game.

Where can i find the link to the last stream ? new music friday stream please

The Chameleons are one of the most underappreciated bands of all time. Script of the Bridge is a great debut and Swamp Thing is a top '80s track.

Who do you wanna see on song machine season 2?

Kyle Cahill

Fiona Apple's "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" is the most overrated album of 2020. After Pitchfork gave it a 10/10 score, everyone else followed along with a faux intellectual narrative about how it was some kind of groundbreaking experimental release. In reality, very little on that album has not been done before, and on top of that the songwriting is nothing exceptional. Fetch the Bolt Cutters is quirky and "random" music for boomers who deep down want something as fresh as Dorian Electra or 100 gecs, but don't understand those artists enough to actually enjoy them.

Renchan

Long Time by Playboi Carti is essentially the modern day trap version of Accordion by madvillain

John Tatara

i should acknowledge i counted "not goods" on your worst of the decade list as zeros

MeowmiXX

in the 2010's, you gave out 5 tens and (approximately) 15-20 zeros as far as albums go. do you feel like this ratio is pretty consistent amongst most decades? Were the 2010's a standout year for incredible/horrendous albums in this sense? Personally, i feel like the 90's had like 10-15 albums I would think are "tens" but i am curious your thoughts about how many albums a decade on average classify as 10/10 or 0/10

MeowmiXX

Now that is a hot and spicy take lol

Hail to the thief is the best Radiohead album. While not their most iconic or influential, it is their creative and experimental peak. It takes more risks than kid a but it turns out much more catchy and interesting

very late, but why did you take down your chipmunks on 16 speed review? it's a pretty meme-y project, but i think it was a very interesting and sonically captivating experiment

glorb glorbson

People need to not hate so hard on Outkast's Land of a Million Drums from the Scooby Doo soundtrack. If nothing else, there was genuine effort put in, and it certainly is an Outkast song which is wild for a kids film.

Moor Mother and Billy Wood's Brass is one of the greatest modern hip hop records of all time, and its a shame that it will be forgotten because of its release close to the end of the year which left it out of many year end lists. Though I feel its influence will grow down the line as more people discover Moor Mother and Billy Woods

Omar AlHashmi

Is there a reason you don't get very deep into vaporware in your reviews? You have some older reviews of important artists in the genre, like 2 8 1 4 and Blank Banshee, but a lot less of more recent released from them and the likes of Death's Dynamic Shroud

Aria Kay

You have been sleeping on two artists I'd love to see: Lil Darkie and 1 800 PAIN. So how about you review more experimental artists?

Indigo V

Rico Nasty should juat go full on hyperpop, since “iPhone” pretty much overshadows everything she’s come out with up to this point.

TraJay

Nevada is pronounced Ne-vadd-a, not ne-vodd-a

TraJay

Kid cudi deserves more credit than drake for putting melodic rap on the map in the music industry (Day N Nite 2008/ inspiring 808s in Kanye’s own words). Cudi poured the fuel and drake lit the fire.

Jack Searl

Inspectah Deck is underrated and at least top 3 in Wu-Tang Members. You could argue Ghost & GZA are better, but Deck is on par with them lyrically and Delivery wise, and better than most Wu-Tang members

clipping's live album w/Chris Fleeger is just as good, if not better than Visions of Bodies Being Burned

I've been watching your videos for years and I've always wondered... why did you ignore electronic bass music so much? You pretty much only talk about Flume, Skrillex and Baauer in terms of contemporary bass music artists, while artists like Griz, Bassnectar, Liquid Stranger, Lsdream, Eprom, G-Jones, Zed's dead, and Odesza make incredibly popular and beloved music, but you never talk about them. Anyways, I love you regardless <3

Alexandre Malboeuf

Spotify is the best designed of the streaming services, despite the issues with the platform and its treatment of artists

GraydonS99

Three Cheers is just as good as the black parade. While lacking in theatrics and the concept areas, its writing and instrumentals are better than most other bands from that era of rock

Test

Cosmogramma for me lol

Ryan The Great

RATM's Sleep Now in the Fire has the boldest music video I've ever seen and, as with their music, is eerily relevant today. It even includes a shot of a man holding a "Trump for President" sign, referencing his 2000 presidential campaign.

Slowdive's 2017 album is their best one. The production and arrangements are way more diverse compared to their 90s records and the music emits great maturity (the latter's kinda obvious since the band members had aged for twenty years but still, that can't be bypassed)

anthony should become the next president once joe biden dies and kamala is assassinated so the whole of america will only be concerned with tracks of the week and how well all the 10/10's have aged. it truly is our only option to prevent a civil war at this point and i dont understand why he hasnt brought this up already. i mean you're clearly of age, just fucking do it. step up to the plate melon

Why did you never review the growlers ? :(

The POLLEN playlist on Spotify is doing more more independent/alternative music than any current music blog

Why is no one talking about how Panic Prevention by Jamie T is a friggin landmark in indie and alternative music? Jamie T is fairly popular but imo that album just NEVER gets enough love. CLASSICS REVIEW PLEASE!

Let's hope 2021 is the year we talk about the fact that the main hook on TLC's Waterfalls is ripped right from the beginning of Paul McCartney's song of the same name.

Trevor Young

Colors by Between The Buried And Me is highly underrated. It's one of the most forward-thinking, original and experimental metal albums of all time and it's hardly ever even talked about.

Alberto Satta

The super Mario galaxy soundtrack is one for the ages. It’s beautiful, genre-diverse, super unique quality compliments the game quality, and the ost has a great flow that feels like a story of its own without even having to see the visuals as part of it.

Live albums usually suck. Very rarely is it worth my time to listen to a live album. I’d rather just watch an HD video of a concert on YouTube then listen to a live album

Anthony I notice you write the fonts for your reviews. Would you consider yourself like a good sketch artist. Do you have any drawings or art pieces you’ve done?

My father will guide me up a rope to the sky is actually one of the best swans albums, has aged incredibly and was a stepping stone for the seer

I predict that in 2021, blink 182 will release a new record. It will receive a not good from melon and I will cry.

When the 2010s become a "classic" era, would you do "classic" reviews of albums from that era, or will your classic reviews always be from before TND? Is there a specific year gap where something can start to become a "classic" or is it more tied to things like impact and influence even if it's a few years old?

Matt MML Lucas

In Rainbows is a more full and complete album than OK Computer. I find from front to back the listening of In Rainbows to be more complete overall. I feel it follows a great natural progression between each song, and while it is present on OK Computer I find the overall flow of tracks to be unbalanced. I think Airbag to Paranoid Android, in my opinion one of the greatest songs ever made, is such a dramatic shift. With In Rainbows I feel as if I'm riding through the mind of an absent protagonist while with OK Computer it feels less like an experience and more of a best of collection. Which depending on the person could be better, but In Rainbows is the greatest album ever made so.

Their debut is so so good though.

Idioteque is the best Radiohead song

Cody Wertz

I actually took a poetry class with a super cool teacher who loved rap, ended up writing an essay about Nas’ “I Gave You Power”. That being said, my do we have to replace it? Poetry’s great, and if you make high schoolers learn it they’re just gonna dislike it. Might as well have an intellectual avenue they’re actually likely to pursue on their own separated from the education system.

Hip hop should be taught in high school in the place of written poetry. The creative elements of hip hop and poetry (and thus the skills you gain analysing them) are incredibly similar due to the clever ways the MC and poet choose to ride the beat. Not to mention the similarities in storytelling. The credibility of both the subject and genre would improve: Due to hip hop's relevance in the mainstream, more people would take to the subject of poetry/English and see it as less old fashioned, and more people would take to hip hop (ignoring the stereotypes) because the art of the genre was taught to people from a young age. It's a win-win for all parties.

you should do a 10 years later video on MY teenage dream ended. since you put it on your decade list we deserve a proper full length review.

What is the best album from the year you were born? I'd say The Downward Spiral for '94, with Illmatic just behind.

2021 Will be the year Ska makes a comeback to the mainstream.

Radiohead’s version of ‘Videotape’ from Bonnaroo 2006 is better than the version that made it onto In Rainbows

music Is not rap

Albums that get released in December have to be nothing short of great in order to be remembered, as they willingly (or unwillingly) bypass the chaos of year end lists by not being around long enough to be remembered as one of the best albums to come out that year.

samueldchilders

The Pete Rock and CL Smooth records aged really well considering how bad some rap from that era aged, and it’s a shame that people don’t talk about them more. The production is always really dense, the sampling is usually really well-done and interesting, and the lyrics (though not very deep most of the time) are fun and captivating enough. I just feel like people shouldn’t have let it fall to the wayside as much as they did

Such as Phoebe Bridgers accomplished this past year, 2021 will show Weyes Blood emerging as the indie darling of the year.

No future Kanye project will be better than average, Pablo & KSG were his last creative peaks.

Simon

The “I AGREE” *ding* sound is what everyone strives to hear when you review their question. I think some people are left a bit disappointed if you don’t use it when you agree with their opinion.

I suspect by the end of 2021 Trap will begin to fade in relevance. It'll most likely always be around in some capacity, but with hip hop continuing to grow and with a lot of mainstream trap becoming stale, it's time in the spotlight is surely up soon.

The super furry animals should’ve been huge. All of their albums (and especially radiator) have fun melodies, inventive sounds, and a nice blend of genres that went above and beyond 99 percent of other acts of the time.

Brendan

submitted this take on twitter too but it'll probably get better exposure here: Drax in Guardians Of the Galaxy is one of the best written characters in the franchise. Marvel needs more of that subtle yet immature humor.

Vipul Konnur

The next Arctic Monkeys album will be crucial for them, because if they fail to create something worthy, they will probably be forgotten as "that band from 2010s"

A Moon Shaped Pool is just as good if not better than In Rainbows

Cory P

thank you for doing a classic review of things fall apart anthony :). i remember buying the cd for it in my local record store a couple months before the lockdown back in march and all it does is bring back fond memories of simpler times

I think a lot of popular alternative/indie rock acts we’re about to see rise up this decade are gonna have many more noticeable shades of 00’s artist influence in their music—like the albums and features we heard from DFA1979/DCFC/Rihanna/The Fray/Avril Lavigne/All-American Rejects/Nelly Furtado/Gwen Stefani/MCR in that decade. More melodic, less artificial flavor added to their vocal tone (as opposed to when hella artists in the ‘10s decided to give their best Liverpool impersonations on their vocal tracks), more conviction instrumentally and vocally, more bridges, more memorable intros/outros, more cinematic/fantastical album art. This could just be a mission statement for the project I’m working on loool but this would be rad to see across the board. Happy new year Mel 💪🏽🌄💪🏽🌺❤️

My girlfriend says she no longer takes your opinion seriously because you said that Hayley Williams solo album Petals For Armor sounds like Radiohead explain yourself please

Kyle Taylor

You are known for your musical knowledge, but how well do you know musicals? If not as well as you'd like to, have you thought of collaborating with YouTubers like Sideways or Lindsay Ellis to take a deep dive or offer your perspective on musicals such as Hadestown or Ratatouille: A TikTok Musical?

MF DOOM had a better grasp of the the English language than any poet that gets taught in schools. His ability to play the English language like a violin is nearly unmatched of any English language poet or wordsmith, and I hope we soon reach an era where we treat rappers with the level of respect they deserve in this department EDIT To be clear I do understand that the point of most poetry isn’t to show off wordsmith skills, but I do feel like that creativity and ambition is under appreciated and it is where the genre of of rap can excel compared to other mediums

Foxx Navarro

Not a hot take but fact that everyone thought you were alt-right just a few years ago is truly hilarious to me

Diego Martinez

Scalpers jacking up the prices of DOOM’s albums since his passing is absolutely disgusting. I get trying to make some extra money during this difficult time, but making money off of the death of an artist is one of the worst things you can do. I don’t care if it’s a hustle, it’s inexcusable.

100 gecs will be considered the most influential pop act of the 2020’s when the decade comes to an end.

Soulja boy is a better streamer than he is a rapper

Adam mezzarone

Relapse is a horrorcore classic. It’s on par with Eminem’s first 3 albums. It has more Dre production than any other Eminem album and has his most focused “theme” with the serial killer angle. People complain about the accents, but they enabled him to be able to come up with new rhyme schemes and some of his best wordplay yet. It was also his last album where he does almost all of the hooks himself, which I think is a big part of why all of the albums after it weren’t received very well. I think if Em released this now, it would be hugely successful and critically acclaimed. But releasing it as a comeback album was a poor choice.

Ryan Dudziak

This may sound weird, but I’m almost never brought to tears by sad songs. What really brings me to tears is something sonically and poetically beautiful. For example, “Heroes” by David Bowie makes me cry because of its context and themes of love and hope in the face of insurmountable adversity. It’s not really a sad song, but for some reason, songs like this hit me harder than sad songs do. Is that weird?

James Carlisle

While amassing a great, colorful, and inventive discography, Cafe Tacvba remains incredibly underrated in the States and deserves more recognition, both for their kaleidoscopic collections of Latin folk and their diverse Art and Experimental Rock releases.

Liam D Mejia

EP is 6 songs or less, and no song over 10 minutes.

I feel like you’re loosing interest in your old format of album reviews. You seem a lot more excited and lively doing live-streaming, interviews, and the discussion type videos on fantano channel. Your album reviews seem to almost be taking a back seat to your other work. You seem like a happy melon tho, and that’s all that matters. Keep up the good work ❤️

Alopecia by WHY? is proto Jean Dawson

I always feel bad when the opening song is my favorite song on the album because it makes me feel like the album gets progressively worse. For example, I love Hail to the Thief, but I feel bad that 2 + 2 = 5 is my favorite song on the album. Even though songs like Myxomatosis, There There and A Wolf At The Door exist

Kyle Cahill

Elliott Smith wrote and produced some of the best Beatles songs since The Beatles on XO and Figure 8

Christian Tom

*Black lol

Caden Meyer

Blac Country, New Road will have the rock aoty in 2021. Their style of progressive post-punk is super inventive and the most interesting thing to happen to rock in recent memory. The only rock artist I could see topping For the First Time is HMLTD if they end up dropping one this year

Caden Meyer

The second half of Danny Brown’s Old has aged horribly

wernher von braun by Tom Leher is the greatest diss track of all time

ElephantofDoom

Deltron 3030 is an extremely underrated album with amazing production and that deserves more recognition and praise

It’s gotten to the point that creation of a new and novel music genre is near impossible as the sound can most likely be found to have already been done or have to many similarities to a preexisting genre

Lochlan Bailey

i think that zach de la rocha should be considered for top 50 rappers of all time, i feel like its the same reason to include artists like mc ride and MIA on a top 50 list (i love those inclusions btw)

Tinashe is heavily underrated.

Channel Orange is better than Blonde

AlexMPo

What's the difference between a Mini-album, and a Ep?

and he never will

though he's released fairly consistently decent stuff over his career so far, James Blake has never done it better than he did on the self titled album and early EPs

Bring Me the Horizon is a good band, and it should be admitted by more people in the “music fan/nerd community” that they are. They’re ambitious, take far more risks than most mainstream artists and the music is filled with exciting and energetic performances.

Despite being just a side project, The Voidz are truly one of the most creative bands in rock music right now. Whatever they have coming up in 2021/22 is going to be crazy. Especially considering their latest single

Riley Schmedeman

With easy accessibility to all kinds of music as well as communities to discuss it, ppl have begun prioritizing breadth of listening over depth to "stay in the know," often to their detriment. While it's good to explore different sounds and to be able to participate in the musical conversation du jour, one of the greatest joys in listening to music is sinking your teeth into a given album/artist and really thinking about their style, themes etc. which can only really be done through many repeated listens, but a mix of elitism and freneticism in the current culture has made that far less common than it should be

The lyrical substance of rap hasn't changed, the only thing that has is presentation. (I consider this era to be a revamp of the 80's tight clothing and leather) You still have songs to make people dance, you still have witty lyrical miracle bars and fresh beats. Dudes just have face tats and auto tuned vocals nowadays.

Shady Fazbear

The bear on the cover of Kanye’s first 3 albums is basically ye’s fursona

John Tatara

Tyler the creator’s Christmas album is beautiful and absolutely not a 3/10

John Tatara

Criticizing Taylor Swift for unintentionally copying Lana Del Rey and praising Mario Judah for imitating Playboi Carti is unfair. It certainly can’t be because Taylor is a higher profile than Mario Judah because at the end of the day, both of them are artists simply making their own music

Drake Parker

I feel like metal is often looked at as a genre that hasn't progressed at all but there are plenty of bands, even though they aren't very well known, that are pushing plenty of different metal sounds forward, like Amnutseba, Imperial Triumphant, Pyrrhon, Lamp Of Murmuur, Mizmor, Cryptic Shift, Mithras, Hell/MSW, OvO, Skáphe, Behold The Arctopus, Witch Melter, Psychonaut 4, etc.

No music genre is innately good or bad. There is only good and bad music within genres. If one dislikes all of a genre (including the acclaimed classic albums) then that is on you, not on the genre. One should at least be able to appreciate the appeal and standout qualities in a great record within a style, even if you don't enjoy it. This especially applies to the "I heard some Country on the radio and know the entire genre is trash" crowd.

beammeupjosi

Turbonegro were really ahead of their time in terms of sound but have also aged terribly in lyrics and image. It’s strange how a genre like punk can have this problem when hip hop and rap seem to get away with it.

Jack Bayley

THRAK is probably one of the most underrated King Crimson records; a record that is simultaneously heavy and beautiful. Yes, there are moments of cheese (like the songs Dinosaur and People), but they are still fun moments, and are lyrically themed well in their own contexts. The record has some great variety throughout, ranging from explosive, impressive instrumental rock (B'Boom, THRAK, VROOOM) to beautiful and wonderful tunes that show off Adrian Belew's vocals well (Walking on Air, One Time, Inner Garden I and II). It's easily one of my favorites of theirs, if not secretly my favorite one sometimes. Either version of the mix is good by me but I do like the new 40th anniversary edition a lot. Also THRAK is fun to say, so there's that.

Drake’s typical monotone rap verse over a moody R&B-sample beat is overdone and getting boring. They’re not that artistically astounding and are almost as boring as his usual “slow songs”. Examples include Do Not Disturb, Lose You, Emotionless, 30 for 30 Freestyle, Two Birds One Stone, and a few others.

Drake Parker

if Flying Lotus releases the posthumous collab he claims he has with MF Doom, it will be hyped up so much that fans will find it disappointing, even if it's amazing

bressig

Why did you stopped doing vinyl update? Did you stopped purchasing records or is your collection still growing?

looking back at DOOM's impact on hip hop in the 2010s, he wasn't as underground as he was in the 2000s. He was the topic of many GOAT conversations, and many 2010s artists (Tyler, Earl, Joey) praised him for his influence. this is also likely due to the internet age redefining what people understood as 'underground'.

Harvey Greene

You’re really fucking wrong

Jack Bayley

With the Weeknd now having a much longer career and bigger discography than he did in 2011, how do you feel about Echoes of Silence now?

i feel like later this decade, trap music will be viewed the same way people in the 2010’s looked back on the 2000’s bling era, ( both praised and also not, based on the listener base). i also feel like the type of sound to replace trap music would be a lot more hyperpop inspired— and we’re already seeing more hip hop fusing with that sound with artists like david shawty and osquinn. i’d love to hear what you think big man :)

Is there any method you use for picking which albums get displayed on the red shelf behind you in your reviews?

If Kendrick drops, it will be his second best project or his worst. There’s no middle point

If you had to guess, who do you think will be the next person you give a 10 to?

SAMIR

Good Luck is Bladee's best and most cohesive project to date and the reason so many long time fans are upset about it is because they have shit taste in music

Alzoe Pez

Greg Puciato's solo album was overlooked by alot but had some really great ideas scattered throughout the whole thing that was really admirable post his work in Dillinger. Although the whole thing wasn't all that cohesive imo, considering he did Killer Be Killed and performed with Jerry Cantrell doing Alice In Chains songs what do you think the dude might have in him next. Hope you have a great year, much love melon

is it possible for kendrick to satisfy fans clamouring for gkmc and tpab level albums with a new release? will a new album have a chance in having the same impact tpab had given the surprise that it was? not saying we didn’t think he had the capacity to make an album that incredible but just that even if Kendrick makes an album of that quality again, will it be met with the same adoration? or will have people taken that kendrick genius for granted

It’s a damn shame that LCD Soundsystem s/t does not get the same praise and respect that both Sound of Silver and This is Happening do. That debut album may not have been as sonically cohesive as the other two, but the bangers are still there, the songwriting is so undeniably James Murphy, and some of the best fan favorites are on it too (Daft Punk is Playing at My House, Yeah, Tribulations, Losing My Edge.)

2020 was a horrible time to revive disco and dance pop given we were all in our homes for the year

Carti is the worst part of his own projects.

[Tough Hypothetical Question] You can only fix one of these issues with worldwide impact. What is your choice? *You'd snap your fingers and this change would occur, effective immediately* 1) War & Senseless Death (Both Human & Animal) 2) The War on Drugs 3) Homelessness & Poverty 4) Bigot-ism (Social Intolerances)

I just wanted to make you aware of underground rapper named Khary. He’s my favorite rapper that’s alive rn. I recommend trying out his LP “Intern Aquarium” or his 2020 album THIS IS WEIRD. Sorry if this is the wrong place to reach you for this matter but I’m a happy fan of his and thought the people here would enjoy his music too.

I don’t have any hot takes, but a moment of silence for MF DOOM would be appreciated.

Currents is almost 6 years old, but the production is still way ahead of so many albums that have come out since

Paul Prete

El-P has at least 4 classics under his belt (Funcrusher Plus, The Cold Vein, R.A.P Music, RTJ2). He is also ahead of his time when it come to his futuristic production and his unorthodox lyrical ability.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Kendrick has reached his artistic magnum opus with TPAB. Curious to hear your thoughts

Alright but how dope would it be if all rappers just decided at the same time “fuck it this is post-trap now” and went full punk/metal

Gary Sharone had more potential to be a good vocalist for Van Halen than Sammy Agar

Julian Dene

Sonic Youth are really fucking boring

Danny Brown will have Rap Album of the Year
