😤 LET’S ARGUE! 😤 (December 2020 Thread)

Thank you for all the support this month; hope y'all are doing well as this hell of a year winds down. Now's the magical time when you hit us with your HOT TAKES, UNPOPULAR OPINIONS, and TOUGH QUESTIONS! Maybe some holiday-themed ones? (That's optional tho) Drop 'em in the comments below and we'll look through them early next week. Let's go!

In case you missed last month's episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/lets-argue-why-i-44068392

Comments

Melon already responded to this in a let's argue on his yt.

Your discussion of the Minecraft soundtrack has really helped me appreciate the Breath of the Wild soundtrack. It does a lot of similar things by combining ambient and orchestral ideas for players who are exploring or fighting, and there's also a lot of focus on how the music in each village/city relates to the culture of the people that live there. It was criticized a lot for how minimal it was at launch, but I highly recommend it!

Country music fans are the most pretentious out of other types of music fans

Michaela Janicki

Chris Webby is one of the best freestylers in the game. it is a shame how underated he is as his punchlines are top tier

Patrick Pillow

I never thought about that until you brought it up... that is very true

Love It If We Made It by The 1975 is this generations We Didn't Start The Fire.

There's nothing worst when someone plays a song through YouTube and they use the music video instead of just the audio. It's not that hard, just pick the lyric video instead at least. Just as bad when someone links you the music video too.

Holden

Kid Cudi made a decent trap album and no one noticed because its another man on the moon. It's a decent album, but MOTM I and II have a completely different sound and vibe than III does.

Ski Mask was definitely more skilled, it'll be curious to see how their discogs age. X was more iconic I guess but I feel like his music may not age very well considering many of his songs aren't structured very well and a lot of his fans will most likely grow out of the music.

I love this take

Ski Mask is, and will be remembered as, a much better rapper than X even if you only consider his work up until X's passing.

Question: When is the next worst to best video gonna come out?

Suicide Silence doesn't get enough credit for being one of the biggest innovators in Deathcore. Their music may have been a bit simple compositionally but the performances on records like The Cleansing are incredibly heavy and raw, and the way they incorporated the sounds of Nu Metal into The Black Crown was done very creatively. Not to mention Mitch Lucker was an incredible vocalist who died way too soon. Since Mitch's death, the Deathcore scene has become incredibly overproduced and gimmicky (See: Rings of Saturn), and while the music can still be pretty fun it lacks that punch bands like SS brought to the table.

rick astley was the first daniel caesar

Midwest Emo and Folk Punk artists are leading the DIY scene today

I know the Grammys probably don’t mean anything to them, but I think RTJ should have got at least a nomination in the rap aoty or song of the year for Ju$t. Their album really summed up what has been going on throughout this year well and El-P had some of his best RTJ verses on that album imo

rather than an argument, I have a question: I see Cosmogramma a loooot in your background. I recently discovered that album and I watched your review later. Why? Why do you love so much Cosmogramma?

No, he’s chaotic and stupid evil

Michaela Janicki

Tough Q: What’s the worst feature on a hip hop/r&b/pop song? For me a top contender is the DaBaby verse on Cash Shit by Meg. It’s too graphic and nothing else about it makes up for that part. Makes me wince every single time.

Michaela Janicki

Danny Phantom is the best hip hop cartoon intro

there is no good Hanukkah music or movies

Thx ❤️

The Needle Drop

A kanye-produced polo g album would be the greatest trap album of all time. Polo on good beats and mix would be unlike anything we’ve seen before, not to mention two chicago legends

Vaporwave is weird. It's also kind of genius.

Mikael Åkerfeldt is the most underrated metal musician of all time. He’s a soulful, melodic, rhythmic, technical genius.

90's Skate Punk/Melodic Hardcore is super underrated. Bands such as those from Fat Wreck improved on the blue print laid by 80's hardcore. The bands were much more skilled (Derrick Plourde from Lagwagon is one of the best drummers of all time), they did not sound like they were recorded in a basement over a weekend and the songwriting is better.

Bob Dylan selling his music/soul to Universal is super disappointing. Bob Dylan’s music is some of the most authentic and sincere music of all time and now a massive corporation owns all of it. And now we’re also gonna hear Dylan songs in all kinds of commercials, movies and Tv shows which is just gonna water down the impact of a lot of his songs.

Disliking Green Day's American Idiot record because it's a cheap and shallow political commentary is unfair because there are only two political tracks on the album and the rest of the songs serve the album's fictional narrative. ... Though there are other legitimate reasons not to like the record

GGs

When did you decide to start saying “internet’s busiest music nerd” and why?

You can like the Beastie Boys or Eminem if you want but the fact that their popularity far exceeds their black contemporaries is due solely to racism. BB were not revolutionary in their sampling techniques, they just appealed to angsty, white, suburban teens.

Cap'n Jazz is the best emo band of all time, bar none. No other band comes close in terms of raw emotional power. Also amazing is how the band spawned both the Promise Ring and American Football

Maybe it’s just because KSG is such a short project.

Stefan Lal

the "world history" that's taught in high schools is just european history.

Danny Brown is rap’s Serj Tankian. An incredibly talented vocalist with an eccentric delivery who perform incredibly captivating serious songs as well as wonderfully strange and surreal ones.

Foxx Navarro

Is it just me or is sleigh ride one of the most annoying christmas songs ever made. Specifically the version without lyrics by leroy anderson

Chase

You seem to not like post rock very much (ex. Your review of the newest Deafheaven album) so whats the story behind your EITS tattoo?

Elon Musk is chaotic good

George Strait's song "4 minus 3 equals Zero" belongs on the worst lyrics of all time list

Emerson B

Masks work. Dine in at restaurants is still very high risk for spreading covid, especially for the servers and other service industry workers.

Michaela Janicki

Not if people don’t care about it. I don’t know if it has the same level of hype and stanhood as Lady Gaga or The Fame Monster

Michaela Janicki

With the exception of Otis, the Diamonds remix is a better Jay and Ye track than everything off of WTT, their sounds and flows complement each other far better on that track than any other track.

Drake Parker

john frusciante of the red hot chili peppers deserves more recognition as a great guitar player. due to the stigma attached to the band, he’s often overlooked but is actually one of the most versatile and creative players alive right now.

Would you rather have a prime DOOM and prime J Dilla album or a prime Nas and prime Madlib album

The new Pete Davidson “Stan” Parody is the best Christmas Song ever made.

Garrett YAOES

the Master of Puppets album cover is absolutely horrible. the red beaming down on the crosses looks like toasted marshmallows.

Wire’s Pink Flag is one of the best punk albums of all time and if you don’t think so you got the big silly

Able has surpassed Frank. Even though Frank Ocean has a better track record with quality albums, Able is superior in terms of creativity, voice, and popularity.

Nathaniel Zaccagnini

The original Eartha Kitt version of "Santa Baby" is honestly good. Even though it's not the most wholesome concept for a Christmas song ever, it works because Eartha actually pulls off the seductive, sly, material woman role (unlike the Madonna version which is just annoying).

MC Emerson

Lou Reed doesn't get credit for laying the groundwork for rap/hip hop. Narrative and edgy lyrics, vocals with attitude, and repetitive song structures.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is the best Christmas movie

Twenty One Pilots paved the way for Oliver Tree

Garrett YAOES

Any song that references its genre in the chorus or title of said song...prolly sucks b. Hate to break it to you king. Love.

Many current artists today that Bob Dylan directly influenced musically and lyrically (Bill Callahan, Destroyer, Laura Marling etc.) are much better and enjoyable than Dylan himself.

The New Abnormal > Is This It > Angles >= Room on Fire >> First Impressions >>> Comedown Machine Recency bias on #1, sure, but the songwriting, diverse production, catchiness, and the top-notch vocals from Julian put it above the rest. It may not be AS catchy as Is This Is, or AS experimental as Angles, but it’s the best all around Strokes album. Bad Decisions is truly the only mediocre song on the record.

Cody Wertz

Which artist has the biggest gap in quality between their best and worst projects?

Alex Sim

While I think that Swimming is a little disjointed and Circles is far superior, your review of the former was too harsh and dismissive.

Paul Prete

Madonna's most creative era started in the late 90's and ended with her Confessions on a dancefloor album, the rest of her catalog is not that consistent despite having some good singles

It's ironic that Drukqs was so polarizing for being "un-innovative" and scattered by RDJ's standards, even though by this point it has probably aged better than any other Aphex Twin album (even though I'd still consider all of his stuff timeless).

Fred Rio

Most ‘experimental’ music is almost as cliched as pop music and doesn’t actually attempt to be something new. There’s only so many times you can glitch out a beat or drop a harsh metallic noise in the middle of a song before it’s not an experiment anymore, and I feel like an artist branching out to a more ‘experimental’ sound (Time ‘n’ Place, Charli/how I’m feeling now) usually just means a recycling of the same noisy tropes we’ve heard for years if not decades.

Brandon Pavlicek

Smashing Pumpkins is criminally under appreciated. Sure, they’ve got some steamy stinkers in the catalog, but Gish? BANGER! Siamese Dream? BANGER! Mellon Collie? PURE FUCKING GAS! Just off of those three records alone the deserve more appreciation. Not to mention the spicy deep cuts on aero plane flies high and b-sides and rarities.

The recent trend of rappers making hooks that are indistinguishable from the rest of the song is one of the worst things to happen to rap in recent memory. It makes the track entirely unengaging and uninteresting. Lil Uzi is the worst offender in this imo. The whole point of hooks is to pop and keep the track from getting monotonous and boring

Caden Meyer

I think jazz music is somewhat underrepresented on your channel (so is classical music but I think that one is more understandable), would you agree? If so, why do you think that is?

Diego Martinez

hi Luke are you on demand? bruh here

Vipul Konnur

Devon Hendryx’s (AKA Peggy) ghost pop tape was ahead of its time. Also call me maybe is the best cover ever!

Had he lived to see the day it became popular, David Bowie would’ve been all over the growing hyperpop wave. Tony Visconti and Dylan Brady would be in the studio right now cooking up some fire beats.

Future Nostalgia will go down as one of the most iconic and remarkable pop albums of the 2020s. The amount of fantastic production, catchy hooks, and stand out lyrics can be paralleled with Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster.

Drake Parker

The song "The Very First Christmas" from the 1st Spongebob Christmas special is unironically one of the best Christmas songs ever made.

Hip hop is deeply rooted in character development - we want to understand and connect with individual MC's and their stories, even if those stories are fictitious. This is why groups/artists like Clipping, whose storytelling is not linked to the MC we are listening to, will never reach massive popularity. Rick Ross, as a character, is also 'fiction' - but since the narrative is about Rick Ross himself, it become more palatable for mainstream audiences.

even though they’re my favorite band, i feel as though King gizzard and the lizard wizard peaked at Infest the rats nest and won’t release anything that exceeds their best work (nonagon, rats nest, microtonal banana) ever again

In your Microphones in 2020 review you mentioned that if you hadn’t listened to previous Phil Elverum projects, you would have no idea what is going on and not be able to appreciate it. The next recommended video I watched was of a music professor with a glowing review of the album while consistently reminding us he had no idea who Phil was and still enjoyed all of the key themes and ideas presented. I fear you put too much weight on holding previous knowledge of the artist in this review.

On the cover for Remain In Light, David Byrne looks like Ray William Johnson.

In your list of the best albums of the 2010's, you listed Kids See Ghosts below Charli and This is Happening. Does this mean KSG was downgraded from a 10 or Charli and TIH were upgraded to a 10?

correction: Jeff Mangum wrote the greatest ALBUM of all time

Vipul Konnur

Billy Corgan is a criminally under appreciated vocalist. The way his voice seamlessly transitions from loud, gritty and nasally to soft, warm and tender is not something many vocalists pull off, and certainly not as well as Corgan does.

no its justified because Morrissey is British and as we all know, British=bad

Vipul Konnur

can't see a denzel record being awful tbh

Vipul Konnur

awesome question

Vipul Konnur

loooool

Vipul Konnur

if you check out his rateyourmusic, he has quite a lot of his classics at 5* (10s), not all of them i don't believe. if that answers your question

luke

Eazy e is the most underrated rapper

Genius having a "meaning explained" video with a character of K/DA feels like manipulative advertising. It's one thing when an artist takes on a fictional character persona (Gorillaz characters being interviewed for instance), it's another when your character (and music) is purely an advertising space for a video game (or a can of peas if a canned food company ever decided to break new grounds).

THIS. Its my favorite Christmas album

How much do you take into consideration whether or not an artist wrote their own songs when reviewing their work?

Miles

The Christmas Charlie Brown record slaps. hard.

Would you rate all of your classic reviews as 10s?

Drake Parker

Revolution 9 is one of the best and most forward thinking Beatles songs of their later career

It's been long enough! The words of the Golden Eel have been kept secret for decades now! It's high time Ween reveals them!

Caden Meyer

This is Happening is the best LCD Soundsystem album and it's really not close. I'd go as far as to say it's their only truly great album.

N

Mindless Self Indulgence is an important precursor to hyperpop and the PC Music scene. If they came out today, their sound would fit in with other extreme artists under the umbrella like Black Dresses

Jon Hoskins

People that insist on playing only on one stage in Smash Bros are objectively cowards

GraydonS99

Damon Albarn is the most consistently great musician of the past 30 years.

Ryan Dudziak

ATCQ is overall better than Digable Planets, but "Blowout Comb" is better than any album Tribe has put out. It's underrated and often gets passed over when looking at the landscape of 90's jazz rap. Deserves a classic review tbh

wfflpff

Absolutely. You can never go wrong with Darius Rucker Home for the Holidays on cd; it's a perfect gift any time of the year in fact

The Needle Drop

Valtari is the best Sigur Ros album by far and it's the greatest Christmas sounding album ever made.

Nathan Guerrette

your octagonal glasses were the best ones and i still would like to know where you got them please

Ken_Broth

As a collective, we've gotta stop talking about the Paul brothers. I feel like I'm inundated with this absolute garbage that I never cared about or wanted to see.

Cupcake

What interview from 2020 surprised you the most? Or which interview did you learn the most from about the artist or their music?

The Latin Grammy honors works produced anywhere around the world that were recorded in either Spanish or Portuguese. Excluding Rosalia because she's Spanish is so dumb. She's Latina FFS

Yusuke Starkey

Listicles serve multiple functions; not just accurately describing the best albums. He chose to exclude multiple albums from one artist to cast a broader spotlight. Not to justify Tony's decision, just answering your question of why.

Yusuke Starkey

The new Mr. Bungle LP "The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo" is a blemish. Now when I recommend someone my favorite 90's avant-garde metal band, I have to caveat that their new album is nothing like their real albums. Honestly they should have used a different bandname.

Yusuke Starkey

The wall of noise at the end of Charli XCX's "Click" is one of the most satisfying uses of noise ever.

Sam Mosher

Zack De La Rocha isn't given the respect he deserves in the hip hop community for being an amazing rapper

Recently when you judged other people’s favourite albums list you inadvertently did one of your hottest takes out. When you mentioned that Silverchair’s Neon Ballroom is “fine” I think a large part of your Australian audience collectively smiled. Usually the discussion around Silverchair and their music is generally negative, but Australian music fans often see them as local heroes. I get that they aren’t the “best” band, but they are pretty far from the Pearl Jam rip-off that a lot of international audiences think. I know that saying silverchair is fine isn’t high praise but it is far better than the eye rolling they usually receive. Also, that persons list had a whole bunch of great late 90s Aussie rock and punk that you weren’t familiar with and I would recommend. Thanks for supporting Australian artists from your global position

Jack Bayley

imho it's a little bit arbitrary to exclude multiple albums from one artist in a top 200 AOTD list just because you want to include as many artists as you can. Either an album is better than another or it isn't, why should it be excluded just because 1 or 2 albums by the same artists is also on the list? anyway i know this take is eleven months late but there ya go lol

Sean L Byrne

What is the best album to gift someone with no ideas on what musical taste they have for Christmas? Should I give everyone Darius Rucker Home for the Holidays on cd?

You suck at reviewing Progressive Metal, please stop reviewing Progressive Metal

Arnarok

I can't enjoy The Smiths because I can't look past Morrissey being a bit of an ass and having an annoying voice, yet Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins is my favourite album, with Billy Corgan arguably being the exact same as Morrissey in this regard. Obviously taste is subjective but can my hypocritical taste be pardoned???

Would you say, on average, that an artist/band’s most celebrated record would be the best introduction to their discography or would it be better everyone start with the first album?

Stefan Lal

Even though I like Foo Fighters, Learn to Fly is their most basic song.

Despite Rosalía‘s undeniable talent and mainstream success, she does not deserve to win the various Latin Grammies that she’s received. The reason being that she’s ~not~ Latina. Granted she does like to follow certain trends created and popularized by Latinx artists, but ultimately she is not Latina, she’s european, and bc of this she is stepping on the toes of actual Latinx artists who are making music in the genres that she is hopping on.

Daft Punk's "Human After All" by itself is meh-to-decent. Human After All being sampled in for their Alive 2007 album/tour is GOD TIER

Ben "Sonjira" Young

Talk about fatima al qadiri please she deserves it

A concept album with a strong story and aesthetic is almost always the most superior medium for listening to music.

Lochlan Bailey

Phoebe Bridgers owns my whole ass.

Black Curse released the best metal album of 2020 - the combination of the brutal relentlessness of Primitive Man and the tight technicality of Blood Incantation made for one of the most uniquely heavy metal experiences in a while

Hi Anthony- I wanted to know what your thoughts on Hyperpop and the future of Pop music in the 2020s- I've been seeing this topic discussed a lot across the internet (especially on youtube) and wanted to know if you had any HOT TAKES or UNPOPULAR OPINIONS on the matter. Are there multiple paths through the future of pop? Is it possible that music history students will be listening to 100 Gecs sometime in the future? Would love to know what you think. :-)

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac is drastically overrated. It's the most generic pop rock there is and it just won't end. An EP with like 3 songs would've done the job far better Also weren’t you gonna do a Pink Floyd tier list?

Cafe Tacvba is grossly underrated in the states and deserves to be in every conversation for best Art / Experimental Rock band

Liam D Mejia

Despite having an extremely annoying speaking voice, Sarah Palin has a fire singing voice (& no, i’m not referencing her masked singer performance) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M4YHUh6Dmo

GOAT lists are skewed by national and lingual barriers, There could be a rapper with the most poetic and exciting lyrics, crazy punchlines and wordplay with the coldest flows and storytelling ability that will never gain respect from the entire rap/hip-hop community because they aren’t from America or don’t rap in English and it’s a shame:(

buckfastbjork

I personally feel ripping on someone who is dead and suffered while alive is worse than ripping on an overhyped pop-star, but I think we can all agree that saying AG is the 'reason' Mac died is way over the line and also fundamentally misunderstands/misrepresents the nature of one's struggle with depression/mental illness

Caleb John Cushing

Are there albums you have reviewed in the past that you cant remember even listening to?

People should stop caring so much about Fairytale of New York's lyrics and enjoy the song!

On In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Jeff Mangum wrote the greatest lyric of all time: "Can't believe How strange it is to be anything at all"

Christian Tom

What are some recent tropes in music that you think could soon split off into a new genre?

JackEttack

All songs > Friends theme song

Alpha Wolf's "A Quiet Place to Die" is the heaviest album of the year. Not best but the heaviest

I'd love to know what band(s) who you aren't-the-biggest-fan-of recorded but would still love to see live for their colossal stage production or unique performance.

The Fresh Prince opening theme was the best rap song of 1990

Trevor Young

Looking at all the year-end lists that are coming out from all these publications, it’s clear how influential how Pitchfork is on the music journalism industry as a whole. Fiona Apple is topping many lists, and artists like The Weeknd, Gorillaz, and the Strokes are continually getting snubbed. This lines up with Pitchfork’s ratings, as Fiona got the 10 while these other artists failed to get “best new music” or even be reviewed at all (in Gorillaz’s case)

tryhard

How do you rank the big 4 of thrash?

Forgive me if you've done this before but Lars Ulrich is overhated. I get that his chops have diminished as the years have gone by but he still keeps up pretty well with all their songs and in addition you can't ignore how important he is on the writing/arranging side of things. Also he was right about Napster, though maybe took a bad approach to it

Adam mezzarone

Lil B is still super ambitious even this late in his career. With Hoop Life 2 dropping soon, he will have released 5 mixtapes this year, his biggest streak since 2012. TYBG

NevadaNate

Thriller is a mid song that is insanely carried by the music video and dance. Not a top 5 song on the album and not a top 10 MJ song in general

Drake Parker

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song > Friends theme song

X-Ambasdadors are way more boring than Imagine Dragons or Nickelback

Keyboard Cat is a banger and an inspiration to musicians everywhere

bressig

Kero Kero Bonito is essentially Weezer except the lead singer IS the half Japanese girl

Paul McCartney's wonderful Christmas time is one of the greatest worst songs ever made. It's haunting, nonsensical , and eerily catchy. If the rights didn't cost so much, it would be perfect on a soundtrack to some cheesy holiday horror b-movie.

Seinfeld

Mushrooms and black olives are the best pizza toppings

Bryan Gilbey

[Let's Agree] When working on an EP or album it's always better to take a "Less tracks" that are "More fleshed out" approach then bloating the track-list. [Let's Argue] Albums (often) have a deeper emotionally resonant impact on someone than a single. Maybe because they have more substance to chew over?

The best music is written by bands we'll likely never hear of. With countless bands operating in relative obscurity and commercial success in most cases depending on either connections, sheer luck and/or hitting a lowest possible common denominator (being dull enough to get as many people as possible to "get it"), we're missing out on lots of wildly creative, talented and genre-breaking artists

Sebastian

Everywhere at the End Of Time should be recognized in mainstream circles as one of the masterpieces of music of the last decades.

Will you ever learn another language (ex. Italian cuz Italy it's my country) in order to enjoy music from that specific country with a better understanding of the lyrics? Is It not a limiting thing not being able to expand over the "normal" English/Spanish/French(?) territory? P.S. Anthony or who is taking this comments for him, for God sake read this on the episode, tomorrow it's my birthday so pls man read this, give me this gift come on.

Will that Tory Lanez album be eligible for your Worst Albums of 2020 video? Or would you rather not give him anymore acknowledgement?

Owen W

I think Denzel's next album will either be amazing or awful, no in-between, do you agree and what kinda sound do you think he'll be moving to since he said it's not gonna sound like his previous albums?

SAMIR

What analytics would you want to see included if you could make a Spotify wrapped-type presentation?

Would you rather let Tyga sample Taiga on a track or let a Taiga cover of Tyga exist in the world?

samueldchilders

Possibly tough question– Which is worse: Mac Miller fans ripping on Ariana Grande, or Ariana Grande fans ripping on Mac Miller? I feel like they're equally shitty for different reasons.

Noah Mendell

David Byrne is just Jim Carrey if he made music

Froggoking

Do you still keep in contact with James Acaster? And do you plan on having more guest hosts in the future? I loved that video and still listen to a few of the albums he recommended.

Abe Froman

Hip hop Twitter is now a toxic place as people voice hot takes that they say just to get clout or voice criticism or hate towards an artist when they’ve either never listened to them or listened to one or two songs

Cameron Edwards

teejayx6 is nerdcore for people that actually commit crimes

Mariah Carey’s version of All I want for Christmas is You is actually straight fire despite it being overplayed to death.

Riley Schmedeman

Daft Punk’s Human After All, while not a great album by itself, has increased worth when combined with the feature film released in conjunction with it

Julian Dene

Richard Dawson’s 2020 greatly underestimated how dystopian the year 2020 would actually be.

Are all of your 10s still 10s in your eyes? For me I feel like some albums that I would have initially given a 10 has either aged poorly or not been as sustainable.
