What are your thoughts on Britney Spears' conservatorship?

Oh god why the fuck would you make my brain fight itself like this goodbye I am gonna go ponder my reason for existing for the next 60 years

Diego Martinez

Arto Lindsay is a very creative producer and guitarist who deserves more recognition for his work, especially on the Brazilian classics he worked on in the 80s & 90s (O Estrangeiro, Marisa Monte's debut).

You’re afraid to review RuPaul’s Old Navy jingle because you know it’s a 10

I agree with you in the context of how Fantano reviews music where he normally takes a more personal approach in his scoring however, I don't think this applies for most music critics who instead try to review music for more objective criteria.

After hours is gonna take album of the year at the Grammys.

Jeff Amankwah

Your audience (and people who consume criticism generally) need to learn that ratings signal level of enjoyment. Enjoyment can be due to a variety of different reasons and two albums rated the same are not necessarily enjoyable for the same reasons (e.g. people taking personal offense that DAMN and Lil Pump are both 7s). It really gets my goat when I see "you are so wrong, this album is at least a whatever/10" as if there is an objective standard for art.

DO MORE ITS FOOD!!!

Trying to compare Drake to Tyler the Creator is literally impossible as both artists are sort of complete opposites to each other therefore it is harder to compare who is better

My (not so) tough question - what was your journey to veganism like? You were a huge inspiration for me to even consider being vegan, which led me to watching Dominion, Cowspiracy, and What The Health all in one day. I just celebrated my 2 year vegan anniversary, so thank you for inspiring me

Ian X

John was not the most experimental Beatles music-wise

Benjamin Lisboa

anderson .PAAK is the most talented person in mainsteam music currently

Plz spare me I’m just a boy

Drake Parker

Fuck, marry, kill: Noise, Drone, Ambient

Chris Hickson

As much as you did build a strong case for Drake to be on the list of the best rappers of all time through his influence, I’m disagreeing with his inclusion on the list simply for the fact of his lack of consistency when it comes to his discography with most of his projects being sub/below par and only having only 2 decent albums. Still love drizzy though

Yo I just came to these comments looking for Drake Palmer. Show yourself. I just saw on the YouTube preview that you're bullying my son Anthony about his Harry Potter glasses? Fucking come 'round here talkin' that jive anymore and you gone catch these hands as I hit you with the Avada Kedavra muhfucker.

Diamond Mine by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins was one of the best albums of the past decade. A fantastic ambient-folk collaboration. It’s a shame you didn’t review it

BENEE is not just a discount Billie Eilish. I would even say she's the better of the two (better or more relatable lyrics and catchier tunes, etc.) . . .

adscrypt

The Doors wouldn’t have been as good without Ray Manzarek. Jim was great, but Ray’s keyboard/bass keyboard not only took the band to the next level in terms of songwriting and instrumentals but also set them apart from other artists at the time.

Paul Prete

Davie504 is, IN FACT, the best slapper of all time. You should have him do one of your let’s argue intros.

Soy! All day!

Best nondairy milks: 1. Oat 2. Almond 3. Coconut 4. Macadamia 5. Soy 6. Cashew

Michaela Janicki

I Fight Dragons is probably the most underrated band of the 2010s. Their most recent record kind of sucks, but KABOOM! and The Near Future (especially Kaboom) are some of the the most extravagant and well produced electronic rock albums I’ve heard. Highly recommend giving them both a listen.

Gorillaz walked so K/DA could run.

I know it's only been a matter of months but re review the slow rush you coward it has aged like fine wine

It’s about time you start taking your production value seriously and finally get yourself a green clip for your green screen that way the red isn’t in the way of the album art. How am I supposed to pay any attention when I’m just staring at that thing every upload

Andrew Shaktah

Did you feel bad when people get mad at you for your controversial reviews? I honestly feel sad when I see that a lot of people fail at understanding what this is all about, just get mad, don't try to understand different points of view, and start a conversation. I always find on the "different" reviews (yours and from everybody, including oneself) the points that characterize our musical taste and understanding about this communication form.

a lot of the beats on Yancey Boys are stellar tho..

Winner...Yup!

More synth pop is a welcome prospect.

One-X makes me want to sharpie my nails and play Shadow the Hedgehog. Seriously though I think it's Adam Gontier's voice. Seether has that same quality. It's got some bangers no doubt.

You're going to dislike this one. I always listen to albums twice at least just to cement my thoughts. Public Strain - Women has annoyed me both times. Both times I have felt like I just watched a foreign film with subtitles off. I love new ideas and I respect the quality and consistency but it sounds bad. I don't want to listen to it again and it is kinda frustrating because I feel like I'm the outsider for an inside joke. Bells is a great song but it just reminds me of Life Metal by Sun O))) which I would rather listen too. Is that the point (to make someone uncomfortable) or am I approaching this wrong?

No way

Would you bet on it?

The features were terribly placed on Humanz though.

Tough question: what's your go-to karaoke song? I usually gravitate towards any Creed song because I'm a firm believer that their song are only good if you sing along to them with your best Scott Stapp voice.

Daniel H

wtf is PRN’s deal¿

Diego Martinez

Fountains of Wayne > Weezer

Matt Dorrell

One-X by Three Days Grace deserves a classic review

Drake Parker

Rihanna

Drake Parker

Noise music per se is fun but it has to have the least cohesion and context or otherwise it just doesn't make sense

N.E.R.D's "Rockstar" is the best song to have been ever titled "Rockstar"

Arnarok

i never see people talking about Red and it makes me sad

While it’s cool to hate on The Beatles at this time you can see their range of influences and hear the quality of their songs in covers. Listen to Siouxsie’s cover of Dear Prudence, Al Green’s take if I Want to Hold Your Hand or Gunship’s recent cover of Elenor Rigby. Some of their songs have aged poorly and are cringe now but when they were on they were on, and it shows when cover by their contemporaries or ever later generations.

Cleanwolf

Kanye West’s Selah sounds like an NF song.

Isaac Myers

E-40 doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Not only does he have classic albums, his work ethic is insane and he still releases bangers at 52. Who else from the 80’s can rap better than him? .... also he has that one phoned in AF brok-n-cyde feature...

The new Mr. Bungle EP is a re-record of demos that the band made while they were in high-school but almost every publication is promoting it like it is entirely new material. With that said I thought it was a pretty fun record, but the material definitely sounds better in a live setting. Dave Lombardo is blessed/cursed with the tendency to make any record he touches sound like Raining Blood.

Josh

There hasn’t been a band that’s been as hyped right of the bat like Black Country, New Road. Only three songs in and people have already called the band and their unreleased debut album the best in the world

Chris Hickson

Would you rather be able to only listen to music through headphones or speakers?

Jenk Onay

Dilla is one of the greatest / most innovative producers ever, but his estate did his legacy a disservice by posthumously releasing so much unfinished material, the vast majority of which he clearly wouldn't have wanted released

Alex Sim

The best way to listen to music is in a car

Jacob Dickens

We need to fully distinguish and accept rap sub-genres and drop the "hip hop is dead" line. Cloud- and muble-rap are growing. Cool. There are still thousands of lyrical and old-school rappers putting in work.

Kanye will never make a good album again

lowkeymatt

It doesn't make sense that you would dislike and criticize Humanz for its high volume of features, but then appreciate and approve of Song Machine -- which is like, entirely features.

Trevor Young

A Biden victory could send pop music into a renaissance period similar to the 2008/2009 synthpop explosion when Obama won his first term. I think we end up seeing an abundance of feel good anthems, if not songs of cautious optimism for what is to come post-Trump.

Jeff Amankwah

The entirety of RTJ4?

You took Mouth Dreams too much at face value. I think it should be viewed as a concept album, representing a peer inside the mind of Neil himself, with various edits and samples throughout the record referring to sleep, dreams, and transitioning into alternate realities. If you take this into account, songs like Yahoo, the intro, Limp Wicket, Cannibals, Spongerock, Wah, Brithoven etc. take on new enjoyment if you imagine them as pop-culture-saturated dreamscapes where the samples are actually coming from their sources, much like Neil's early animations (Ultimate Showdown). The album also has great structure/pacing to help it's "journey-like" feeling.

There has been no real stand-out “protest anthem” to channel the energy of this last year like how “Alright“ by Kendrick Lamar was able to in 2015.

Rob Lammers

America is NOT GOOD, and you should move to Canada

Khazuki

Daveed Diggs is a top 5 rapper right now

Caden Meyer

hamilton is corny and terrible and extremely overrated

100 gecs are on their way to win a grammy. maybe even this year

The self titled tenacious d album is one of the best rock albums of the 2000s, but since the band are a comedy duo, people often brush it off.

People should listen to more King Crimson albums than just the debut

Attack Attack were super important and SCS still holds up if you let yourself laugh at the bad dance parts because they were never meant to be too serious in the first place

What's your take on John Zorn's production over the years? From Parachute Years and game pieces to Simulacrum or Moonchild?

And even after a masterpiece like Magdalene i dont think she has peaked musically yet

David Cremin

You are not a melon. You are more of a Kiwi head,

FKA twigs is one of the most influential artists of the past 10 years because no artist had fused experimental electronic music with Pop and RnB like that before. It also set the stage for artists like Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama to work with experimental producers like twigs did with Arca.

David Cremin

davee diggs is the most underrated rapper in the game rn. his flows and pen game are S tier and nobody seems to care. it just makes me sad.

I can't stand when people act like something is objective terribly just because they weren't into it. That's just immature and short-sighted

Triple 9

When a rap track starts with dissonant strings it is guaranteed gonna go hard (see: Psycho by Denzel and Venom by Litttle Simz)

Callahan Hirrel

Man I wouldn’t have gotten into as much blink 182 as I did if I started with Cheshire Cat. I’m going to go with celebrated album.

ratking > migos

Would you say, on average, that an artist/band’s most celebrated record would be the best introduction to their discography or would it be better everyone start with the first album?

Stefan Lal

After listening to Matana Roberts, Kamasi Washington seems kinda bland. (also, cold take, Matana Roberts is way too unknown).

Big K.R.I.T. would be way more popular if all of his music was on streamin services

Torstein Gresaker

TA13OO is a 10 and you know it

Sometimes you age into it. I was too much of a snob to listen to 1D and now in retrospect they're not complete garbage.

Jac

Jesus is King’s album cover should’ve been included in the worst album covers Let’s Argue

David Pedron

Its like eating a chocolate bar that's covered in sprinkles and syrup.

Jesus is King is a better album, then Yandhi was ever gonna be.

Isaac Myers

Bring back “It Came From Bandcamp”. That was one of your best series and I miss it dearly.

I wanna see a WTB on Prince. But we wouldn't have any "Worst" to examine.

Blur is a million times better than Oasis. It’s not even a close contest.

See You Again is one of the most overrated “sad songs” of all time. Not only is Wiz’s feature incredibly unfitting and underwhelming but the production and overly expressive adlibs are obnoxious

Drake Parker

While listening to a happy or uplifting song while I am happy is great but its the last thing I want to hear when I'm sad or angry, I'd much rather listen to music that matches my mood. I like listening to music that empathises with my mood rather than to a song in hopes to change it, to me it helps me move on much better, besides, I hate to be told "calm down" when I'm upset and I definitely don't want to be told that musically, but some people seem to feel like listening to music that mirrors your mood must amplify it which I don't find is the case all the time.

Wildridge

What happened to worst to best? I miss it.

Holden

Well I think you're right. Anthony still gave Cudi props for the risk that was SB2H and (most) Metalicca fans forgave them for the horrendous cover of When Doves Cry that they performed live.

I'm in love with the shape of lemon drops.

What about In Rainbows?

JT also doesn't have nearly as much passion or self awareness as LNX.

I recently started reading these descriptions but the YouTube Music app doesn't have super detailed descriptions.

You don't like "Ace of Spades"?

It is difficult to relate to a TV host that feels like he's acting though. The Roots are the best part of that show for sure.

Not a bad point. However the compulsive urge to inflict negative emotions on people just because you can is some borderline psychopath behaviour. I know internet culture has normalized the phenomenon of "trolls", but they're a shitty aspect of the human race that exists to cause harm for enjoyment and that is net bad.

That makes sense mostly but sometimes a universally accepted "fact" is just something that many/most people can agree on. You will always find options that disagree with you but sometimes a bad mix is evident to the majority. We may not have "bad mixing" down to a solid science but if a highly mixed snare damages ones hearing ability then we might be able to set a benchmark. We do know how many decibals can damage someone's hearing so that is certainly something to consider. Otherwise I don't have much of an argument against this. To the contrary if you can't hear an instrument that was intended to be heard then that also would be a questionable mixing decision. This is a complicated topic though in any case.

a Crow looked at me is more spontaneous, minimal and rough around the edges than the 10s he has reviewed. It's a tragic album and the way it was made is completely fitting but it wasn't created with the air tight presentation of the other 10s. It is still a quality album nonetheless and very hard to listen too.

Fatima Al Qadiri deserves more shine

I..... agree

Aidan Mcilhenney

Motörhead is overrated af. All their tracks sound the same and they're not even that influential for the genre, they're just a slightly better version of AC/DC.

Alberto Satta

Not saying I hate Jimmy Fallon but the Roots are the best part of his show. His predominantly white audience probably doesn't see the gravity of having a legendary rap group as his house band.

Aidan Mcilhenney

That's also why memes are successful. When we try to criticize the bad ones they only become more common because the ones who make them double down based on the audience reaction.

I mean this is anecdotal but it didn't confuse me when I first searched for his review on TLOP I saw both results and figured out pretty quickly what was going on.

I can't remember but I'm pretty sure he said it annoyed him. Even good songs sometimes just annoy people. Happy by Pharrell Williams is a great example of a quality song that many people love to hate even though it was commercially successful.

Tom "Corny" Macdonald is not a bad person. He lacks perspective and is not in touch with his emotions enough to engage with his empathetic side. He looks at people as groups instead of individuals but that doesn't mean he is not capable of changing that outlook. Does he deserve our time? Should we try to politely engage in conversation with him & do you think it will yield results? (When I say we/our I am referring to people with generally left leaning positions or socially conscious outlooks. People that, he typically likes to...."offend"...lol)

There is no point of still having the original outdated beta-TLOP review on your channel. It should be deleted and the redux review should take the original video title. It will confuse new viewers whose first experience to TND is the outdated review.

Drake Parker

Run to the hills by Iron Maiden is the best thanksgiving song

Can you do like an in-depth track review on Wonderful Christmastime? I know you hate it but why exactly? Personally I think it's fine.

Scott McEachern

Though narrowly missing out on the Top 20, The Hirsch Effekt are the most interesting German artists of the last decade. Imagine Dillinger Escape Plan meets Rammstein on steroids meets The Mars Volta in a Sleepytime Gorilla Museum while making love to a classical orchestra.

Sebastian

Game Theory is not talked about enough as one of the best Roots albums. It has Black Thought's best rapping (imo), it's super dark and gritty, both from a lyrical and instrumental standpoint, and the songs have extremely sharp topical focus. GT easily goes toe to toe with Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart.

Fred Rio

Apple Music is underrated for often having very well written album descriptions(Cosmogramma and Boarding House Reach are great examples).

Lil Nas X succeeded with Old Town Road where Justin Timberlake failed with Man of the Woods

bressig

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a top 5 anime of all time.

Tyler Craig

Music doesn't get worse as time goes on. People just age out of the target demographic of pop music. They think more recent pop music is worse than the pop music they grew up with, when the reality is, they're just not the target demographic anymore.

Owen W

Or have a lot on their plate already and have decided that an extra helping of crankiness wont do them any favours. This year has been hard. If you feel like you can't handle it, its okay

Vipul Konnur

Dubstep ran so Hyper Pop could sprint

Jacob Moore

PREACH

Vipul Konnur

Visions of Bodies Being Burned is Clipping’s best record to date. Most consistent tracklist, and has the added benefit of being supported by There Existed an Addiction to Blood.

Reid Sweatt

If there's a conversation to be had about the best covers albums of all time, I think The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge should go down as one of the greatest ever made. It's cohesive, focused on one artist, the instrumentals are stripped back and minimal (just one guitar and one voice provide amazing and raw renditions of some of Bowie's best songs), sung entirely in Portuguese, and serve as a testament and loving tribute to David Bowie's genius musical output early in his career. Bowie himself has praised Seu Jorge's performances and re-working of his songs by stating, "had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."

Christian Tom

I don't think it's fair I got a copyright claim from UMG for having a clip from a movie that just so happened to be sampled in a Marilyn Manson song. This movie clip was claimed because its in a Manson song. Kinda stupid I think

Jon Hoskins

Hey guys, George Clinton or Tatsurou Yamashita?

Bro you're wrong only by the fact that it's a 2006 album

Space Age Love Song is much better than I Ran and deserves to be more mainstream

Vincent Petersen

tkol is radioheads 2nd best album

bro i'm italian and i can say that if you live in USA then yes it's overrated but in Italy we have a lot of different types of spaghetti with variuos types of thickness

In your last patreon lets argue, you mentioned that the output of albums to review were slowing down. If it slowed down enough to the point where you needed to make more content, what would you do? More classic reviews? Review albums from the past year, classic reviews, or more non-review content?

Dennis Vilensky

I feel that the Mothers of Invention discography is better than Frank Zappa's solo discography (if you consider them separate from each other), the former having amazing albums such as Uncle Meat, One Size Fits All, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and We're Only In It for the Money, all incredible works in my eyes. I still like a number of his solo works, especially Lumpy Gravy, Hot Rats, Jazz from Hell, Joe's Garage and of course Apostrophe, but the Mothers really had such a consistent quality with their albums in comparison, ie. not a huge fan of the 80s Zappa for the most part.

People that don't try to participate in NNN are cowards that should be ostracized from society

Holden

Nine Inch Nails are one of the best produced bands from the 90s and have influenced so many other artists to aspire for that level of dense but not always as abrasive production style. I'd say The Downward Spiral and The Fragile are masterpieces for their time and even now although some of the edgy lyrics didn't age that well. The entire "personal journal" vibe of the lyrics make it very emotionally palpable.

True Stories is objectively the better film based on a concept album than Pink Floyd's The Wall. It's funny, quotable and has a higher rewatch factor

GN alkhouri

The smiths are overrated their music is good in small doses but their discography lacks diversity

Lochlan Bailey

Ed Sheeran and Logic have a large crossover of fans

Bryce w

Anthony what do you think of the new Moor Mother? and We Are Sent Here By History? It’s ok you can tell us we won’t spread it;)

Diego Martinez

Spaghetti is the most overrated pasta

Trevor Young

artists should definitely experiment and push themselves outside their comfort zone while creating, but if it doesn't turn out well they can't be mad that people don't take to it. not every experiment will pan out, but if the effort is genuine, that will be appreciated by the fanbase even if it's not accepted or liked. in other words, fans don't hate when artists try something different than they're used to, they just hate when artists try something different and it happens to turn out poorly

bressig

Psychedelia in the 60s was one of the creative peaks of the 20th century and as a result genre fusion was increasing normalized throughout modern music.

Lochlan Bailey

As someone just getting into Between The Buried and Me for the first time, Coma Ecliptic and Parallax 2 are underrated if only because they're still way better than Silent Circus even at their lumpiest. The band's best albums are forward-thinking and boundary pushing but their first two albums were playing catch-up with other metalcore outfits of the day like Converge, The Red Chord and even Mastodon to an extent.

TikTok is a handicap on popular music as of now. If songs continue to get big just because people dance to them on tiktok the future of hits will be just to cater to that crowd. Not to mention the influx of one hit wonders

The noisier tracks off of R.E.M.'s Green are pre-grunge and surely inspired Kurt (as he has cited R.E.M. as an huge musical influence on him) and the Nirvana sonic landscape. Also, New Adventures in Hi-Fi is extremely underrated and is hardly included in the band's best album argument compared to Murmur or Automatic For The People. P.S. I'm Italian and i hope i used my english at best in this post, no translator used i swear

People that still believe objectivity exists should not have their opinion taken seriously in the slightest. Everything from good/bad songwriting, good/bad mixing, good/bad performances, good/bad concepts, etc., ultimately boils down to how you feel about those certain things, not a legitimate professional standard of criteria that everyone on earth has to follow. It’s legitimately laughable to see many people in your comment section use the argument, “you’re not looking at it objectively” in your controversial reviews.

Pvzuzu

I’d much rather hear a Ernie Isley guitar solo then a David Gilmour solo. Isley has more groove, swagger and life to it. It also feels more integrated into the song itself. Whereas Gilmour’s kind of seem like they’re this odd branch splitting from the core of the song. They suffocate the other instruments and kill the momentum of the song, case in point, Money. It feels cold.

tidal is fiona apple’s best album, even if a lot of her albums come close

Pink Floyd is easily a top 3 band of all time their mind expanding sounds and lyrics were revolutionary for the time combined with David gilmours excellent guitar playing and what they did for psychedelic and progressive rock is something to behold they also had one of the best album runs ever in the 70s with dark side, wywh, animals, and the wall.

Sam’s town by the killers is one of the best rock albums of the 2000’s

Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. As impactful and talented as Neil Peart and Geddy Lee were/are, at the end of the day it was Alex who was writing most of the music. On top of that, his technical abilities were easily on par with his fellow band members.

Daniel DeGeorges

Everyone saying Ballads 1 is better than Nectar is purely going off of hatred for a more “pop-like” sound and nostalgia for an album that’s just two years old. The production and far better vocals on Nectar make it far better than Ballads

Cameron Edwards

Mastodon is kinda like 21st century Metallica. Revered underground-ish debut, breakout second album where they massively refined their songwriting. Third album they stepped up again (BM>L), got super technical on their fourth, then decided to make more accessible albums that aren’t as well liked

Twin Peaks has to be the best soundtrack OAT.

You only gave A Crow Looked at Me a 9 because you didn't want it to be memed like the other 10s you have given.

They should put out more mono mixes of old albums on streaming services

Tjenixen

despite spotty results for winners in the past, the mercury prize has the best format of any music award show. the prize’s constraint of one award for one region allows for a broad scale of genres to be represented, and really hones in on the craftsmanship and message of the music on each nominated album. plus, allowing each artist to perform on nationally televised tv has given countless new artists some spotlight and shared wildly non-status quo bands with the people. what other award would bring black midi to the masses?

Aidan

The existence of low effort Everywhere at the End of Time memes are almost as depressing as the album

haughty garbage

Humanz is overhated and The Now Now is underrated
