Further Education used to be free in Wales/England, and you'd get a grant to cover your rent/living costs too but in 1993 they first brought in student loans, which at first were quite small just to supplement living costs, but now I think most students have to pay all their fees and end up with substantial debts. I was lucky as they were still free when I started my degree and the student loans came in for my final year but it was only £1000 so that was my total student debt.

I think they have some help in Wales, but I'm not really sure what the details are. When this show started in 2011, there was a lot of anger from English students to the government at the time, regarding tuition fees. And it's got even worse since then.
