2024-11-15 18:36:03 +0000 UTCI have noticed that the "council" comes up a lot in UK shows, and for someone outside of the UK, it might be confusing? If not, then ignore the rest of the post, but the council's basically just the local government. They're elected independently of the national government, but made up of mostly the same parties, and a disproportionate amount are independents(which means they don't belong to any political party). They're in charge of managing local schools, maintaining roads, waste collection, parks and green spaces, and transport, etc. They get their funding from the national government, and something called the council tax, that every houseowner/renter has to pay. Rates vary depending on the size of the property and the area.
