School in the UK is typically split into 2; primary and secondary. Primary is ages 5-11 and secondary is 11-16. Both are mandatory and all make you wear uniform, then 16-18 you do Sixth form or go to a college. The characters in this show are in Sixth form. Usually Sixth form doesn't make you wear uniform though. Once you've done Sixth form or College then you can go to University if you want.

Left arrow key should be standard behaviour for any experienced american reactor. Keyboards should give them an electric shock if they hit space twice in a row. I'd up my patreon membership in a heartbeat if that was implemented.

We have secondary school (ages 11-16) and then sixth form/college (16-18). Sometimes colleges are their own entities, where students are more independent, etc, i guess to prepare them for the transition to university or because their courses are more specialist/vocational. Sixth form colleges are sometimes a part of the secondary school, which is the case here - the school itself would cater to 11 to 18 year olds. So the 'short arse' was probably 12/13 (year 8). Also, you have to watch bad education next, especially if you love the humour of kids taking the piss out of adults 😂😂😝

For those a bit older that’s a lot different. Reception didn’t exist, I’m still confused about what that means. Primary school went up to Primary 7. The numbers didn’t continue, Secondary school started with 1st year. You could leave after 4th year. The exams were a mixture of O-Grades and Standard Grades in my day (Scotland). 5th year and 6th year were both optional.

When I was at school my physics teacher asked me to go and find a long weight and I went upstairs to my mum who was also a physics teacher at my school and she wasn't in on the joke so she actually found me a long weight and I took it back - the look on his face was priceless, I still didn't know it was meant to be a joke.

The kid isn’t 9, he’ll be about 12/13. High schools in the UK are from age 11-18.

Note that in his office (I think it's the first time it appears in the series) Mr. Gilbert has a cricket ball on his desk: several years prior to The Inbetweeners, Greg Davies had portrayed English cricket icon WG Grace in the idents for Channel 4's cricket coverage.

It depends, at my school every year used the same buildings and the sixth form had a temporary classroom building that was eventually appropriated by the wider school, and a common room that ended up having several different locations and was rechristened the "sixth form study room" by the time I was old enough to be part of it.
We didn't have a uniform but they did institute a dress code after I left, probably because some people (I expect I was probably one of them, to be fair) took the piss with the whole casualwear thing. So perhaps that was why the sixth form wore a uniform in The Inbetweeners. It could also be because it just made it a bit clearer that they were still at school, and I might be thinking too much about this.
Charlie

Always seems weird to me seeing Gilbert walk into their common room, in my school no teachers were allowed in the common room, it was a teacher free zone, they could knock on the door and ask you to go outside and talk to them but they could never enter.

Some more common things asked for on those kind of wind up lists:
* Some beef curtains from the Coop (a girl I knew actually fell for this and asked for them)
* Left handed claw hammer
* Sky hook

Sixth-formers (age 16&17) wouldn't usually wear uniforms or mix with regular secondary schoolers (age 11 to 16) they would be in a different building even but I think because the show was set in secondary school but the actors looked a bit older they created a cross between the first year of Sixth-form and the last year of secondary school and put them in that. But generally just think of it as primary school up to age 11 and secondary school up to age 16. I say this because some of the descriptions below confused me and I went to school in England. (Or maybe BECAUSE I don't know 🙂)
R Lawrence
2024-11-13 20:24:35 +0000 UTC
High schools here are generally ages 11-16. Some schools have 6th forms, which means kids can stay for an optional extra 2 years. I think the four guys are in the first year of 6th form in this episode, so they'd be 17 and the younger kid 11.

So we go to primary school first. Nursery aged 3-4, Reception aged 4-5, then we start the years probably like grades. Year 1 aged 5-6, all the way to year 6 aged 10-11.
Primary school ends.
We then go to secondary school (high school)
Year 7 aged 11-12 all the way up to year 11 aged 15 to 16.
Year 10 and year 11 is when we sit our exams called GCSE’s.
After that with hope to go to university we do something called sixth form (what the inbetweeners is set in) here we study A-levels. Basically a year 12 aged 16-17 (start learning to drive, license at 17) and year 13 aged 17-18 (start drinking ready for Uni at 18)
It’s by choice tho after year 11 we can go to college and study different subjects not taught in schools. (Ps Wolfie in the show is 17, so he would be at a college placement in a garage studying, abit like an apprenticeship)
Hope that sums it up, please react to Brassic 🤞🏼

Schools in Britain tend to be divided into two age groups. 5-11, and 11-18. It used to be optional after 16. The school I went to was 11-16, then I went to college and worked part-time while studying.
Just think of Harry Potter. I know QB knows of the movies? Harry Potter was technically starting high schoo / secondary school, when he was invited to Hogwarts.

We don’t separate middle school and high school generally, so secondary school is 11-18. Just as you said KB. Primary school is 4/5-11. There’s no grades just years, you’re only in classes with the same people in your year.
I’ll happily sit and talk history over a pint if you ever make it to the UK 😂

The boys are in secondary school. All four boys are in 6th form, which is the 12th-13th grade. The boy who wanted to fight Simon is probably in year 7 or year 8. You start secondary school in year 7 - which is why the boy is quite young compared to the four boys

I can empathise. I've moved 11 times in my life. 9 of those times since I turned 18 and moved out on my own. I moved earlier this year, just 1/4th a mile, but with no car at the time, so most of it was me carrying things back and forth, and hiring a van on the final day.
Great reaction as always. And lovely to see the Queen too.
And wow, those are some awesome paintings.
