untitled unmastered is the best album of all time

Ken_Broth

Your old glasses looked a lot better on you ngl

Noah W

beach fossils is just the poor man's joy division

there should be more moshing at jazz shows

Deathconsciousness should be in discussion for one of the top albums of all time, its commonly played off as post-industrial doomgaze or nihilism in a can, but it deals with heavy themes such as suicide and death. instead of putting you in a third person view or putting you on the outside looking in like most albums do; Dan & Tim put you in the experience of someone with such a mindset. not just lyrically, but sonically as well. All the fear, uncertainty, irrationality, self hatred, etc. every thing down to those depressing ass track names. No other album conveys death, destruction, and hatred as well as Deathconsciousness has.

Endless is better than Blonde

superdude75561

Wide Awake was the best rock album of the 2010s musically, and just happened to be spot on with its commentary and lyrics as well. ‘Twas truly robbed of that decade list.

Kevin Barnes is the Freddie Mercury of the 2000s.

Rust in Peace is the best thrash metal album

Royce Da 5'9s Bar Exam 4 is the best mixtape of the 2010s

Rakim has had a bigger impact on mainstream music than the Beatles and dosent get nearly the same credit

What do you think of artists who say that they aren't a genre that they so clearly play? Like how Idles says that they aren't a punk band

anextlomara

might be too late but adele's 21 should be in the top albums of the decade discussion

Ken_Broth

“Live stream” “shows” are really cool and make way for bands to basically get creative with recording a performance. But the social aspect of live music is still the biggest missing component which makes me think live streams won’t be as monetarily successful

Michaela Janicki

You've given very positive reviews of a couple of cumbia records (Meridian Brothers and Ondatropica). Do you listen to a lot of cumbia, and choose to only highlight the records that resonate with you the most, or did you just stumble upon a couple of ones that you really liked?

Pablo Perez Martin

You really do yourself a disservice by not watching the Gorillaz music videos upon your first listen. With a group like this, the visuals are half the experience and I don’t think it would impact your opinion very much

Andrew Shaktah

What did you think of the early King Gizzard albums (pre-Quarters) that you never got a chance to touch upon in a formal review? Most of them aren’t really “core” Gizz albums, but still necessary listens for the most part!

Chris Hickson

Are you interested in create a platform when you can invite artists to perform live for the internet, and also interview them? Sort like KEXP, Audiotree, Tiny Desk, etc. I think would be a great content for Twitch and you can give exposure to a lot of amazing artists.

The anwser is $$$

false

I’m currently on my third rewatch of it this year lol. The View From Halfway Down is legitimately the best episode of TV ever

Cason Handy

The real thrash metal big 4 is Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, and Kreator. Metallica are obvious just off of their 80s output. Slayer similarly. Sepultura and Kreator at the very least for being instrumental in the creation of black and death metal, but Sepultura's output from like '87-'91 is flawless and Kreator is one of the few 80s bands still releasing great music

Where was the love for Street Worms by Viagra Boys when the album first dropped in 2018? I saw it snuck onto your top 200 of the decade list but never got a formal review or mention elsewhere. Those boys are pumping out fiery tunes from Sweden and need more recognition than what they’ve gotten thus far.

Chris Hickson

If the late 90’s to early 2000’s were infamous for rock singers rapping badly then the 2010’s up to today will be infamous for rappers singing badly

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are not funk rock. They are a rock band with a bassist that uses slap. DFA 1979, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, The Rapture etc. are all abundantly more deserving of the title.

I don't think being trans has anything to do with the quality in the music, but I do agree with you. So many trans artists are criminally overlooked, and some of the freshest, most forward thinking music comes from them

Vipul Konnur

Collecting physical music becomes much more enjoyable when you realize you only need to buy what you genuinely enjoy listening too. Not whatever album is an “essential for any collector”, or what you see posted all day in your favorite subreddit.

*Not to mention all the original music is incredible and fits the mood and themes of the show perfectly

Bojack Horseman is easily one of the best animated shows of all time. Maybe one of the best shows regardless of live action or animation. It’s blend of humour, talk of mental illness, and the incredibly dark subject matter through most of the episodes is ingenious. It contains some amazingly written characters, and some of the best episodes in television history. Easy 10/10

Lil Wayne still doesn't get the respect that he deserves from the public. Yes, the rap game respects him, but I feel like so many rap fans don't want to give him the credit he deserves simply because of his lyrical content. He's freestyled every verse in his career and his clever wordplay immortalizes him among the greatest to ever spit.

In addition to your annual Classic Reviews, you should review an "Anti-Classic," an iconic bad album from back in the day. I'd recommend starting with Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water

Caden Meyer

Bottomless Pit is better than The Money Store. They went harder without sacrificing catchiness, the album flows better I think and (while I love Get Got) the opener just sets the tone for the entire album. I think people love The Money Store more because it already has kind of a classic status in this genre.

Stefan Lal

the popularity of popular music has nothing to do with music

Trym Sørsdal

Pretty young things aren't so pretty

Arsene

Evil Empire is RATM's best album. What it lacks for in big hits and protest anthems, it makes up for in musical creativity, as the band seems to be freely exploring their sound and end up creating some of the most exciting moments in their discography.

Will analog music always be better than digital or do you think someday technology will come so far that analog will be indistinguishable from digital?

Adrian Vargas

Pantera were easily one the best things to happen to metal in the 90s but all the horrible groove metal bands they inspired almost makes their impact on metal more negative than positive

Adam mezzarone

You could say that about every recent butt rock band lol. Look at FFDP and 3DG cover of “Somebody That I Used To Know”

Cason Handy

Even at their creative peak, The Beatles could never write a song like “money machine” but 100 gecs could write a song like “Yellow Submarine” any day of the week. Thus 100 gecs > The Beatles Thanks for attending my TED Talk

Cason Handy

Bowling for Soup was a good pop punk band. For all their goofy and dated lyrics the songs are still pretty fun to listen to and I still end up playing them occasionally. Not even getting into all the songs they’ve done for cartoons and movies. Just a band I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad time listening to.

Alex Weir

Music from Youtubers is always rapmusic, because it is easier to make.

Lauch1337

Dunno how to turn this into a hot take but I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on the passing of Michael Brooks. I went on a big TMBS bender after his passing and really enjoyed your discussion together 💖

Graduation is better than 808s

free jazz will never reach the creative heights of “space is the place” by sun ra

Diego Martinez

I don't think it ever became boring tbh

Vipul Konnur

The guitar is is boring in most pop music with people playing the same old riffs with out much in ways of creativity and innovation of the sound

Noah

croissants are better than donuts

Harvey Greene

Starting a comment with "Nobody:" adds nothing to it anymore. All uses of it could have the "Nobody:" removed and the comment would lose nothing. "Nobody:" is now nothing more than a notice that a punchline is coming.

Owen W

Are all of your Classic Reviews a 10?

Drake Parker

What do you think of the idea of being “too old” to understand an artist or genre? Do you worry about this happening to you years down the road?

Jacob Dickens

What's your ratio of listening to new stuff for the purpose of reviewing it + gathering opinions for possible future questions VS just listening to something (maybe a classic for example) for the sake of just enjoying the music

Nicolas Babick

Is brunch valuable?

Brendan

Prefab sprout are undeniably one of the most overlooked bands of all time. While often rated fairly highly, the majority don’t know of them past their popular stuff, if at all. Every album they put out is at the very least pretty good. They’re an 80s gem

Brendan

Deathconsciousness's second half is so much better than the first half, to the point that the first half actually drags the album down

Abe Froman

Everything Will Be Alright in the End has aged very badly. It comes across nowadays as insincere pandering to 90s Weezer fans when Rivers really just wants to write goofy pop songs, as shown by the band quickly regressing once more on Pacific Daydream and Black.

Isaac Jackson

Bad Wolves's cover of The Cranberries' "Zombie" is one of the worst covers of all time. They took one of the greatest rock songs of '90s and added nothing unique to it. Instead, they made it into a generic, shitty, and unbearable 2010s rock song.

Matthew Wisniewski

What things can the Post-Rock genre do to breathe life back into itself and become more interesting as a whole?

Tyler Craig

Trans artists should be getting significantly more public attention than they have now.

Releasing the title track of an album as the lead single is a COWARD MOVE

Caden Meyer

A major cause of rock's dying state that needs to be brought up more is the fact that major festival planners refuse to spotlight new young bands in their lineups. Check the lineup of any popular rock festival, such as Rock A.M. Ring or Download, and it will be mostly filled with bands that have been established and popular for decades. While it could be argued that fans are the ones responsible for buying into these festivals, the planners are the ones playing it safe by using what has already been proven to bring success rather than presenting to audiences what could possibly be the next game-changers. What will planners do when these bands inevitably cease performing in the coming decades?

Aidan Mcilhenney

Tough question: do you find it’s hard to separate your work/personal lives so that you’re able to take time off? Working from home during a pandemic, and you like your work seems like a recipe for working nonstop.

Michaela Janicki

Listening to music while riding a bike is an underrated method of consuming music. Especially when listening to something you find hard-hitting. You're out there experiencing art while life itself passes by, and the endorphins make the emotion produced from the music more palpable.

Jay-Z has the best discography out of any rapper closely followed up by MF Doom, Scarface, Ghostface and Outkast. Even the albums people consider his worst I still enjoy quite a bit (Kingdom Come, Blueprint 2.) Also Blueprint 1 is the best rap album of all time.

Each time Kanye comes up in my newsfeed his great discography loses a little bit of its luster in my eyes even though the music on wax hasn't changed at all. Although a listener may try to separate their opinion of an artist from their opinion of said artist's work, are there any musicians in the social media/ me too/ current era whose music you seem to enjoy less due to things outside of the music?

Billy Joel's Turnstiles is underrated. While The Stranger is often regarded as his best recorded and does indeed deserve all the praise it receives, Turnstiles is a more emotional album with no skips and some of his most beautiful songs, a love letter to his beloved New York City. Beyond fan favorites like Say Goodbye to Hollywood, New York State of Mind and Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway), there's James, I've Loved These Days and Summer, Highland Falls. Turnstiles needs more recognition.

Triple 9

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a top 5 anime of all time.

Tyler Craig

Wait are you gooches?

Vipul Konnur

Artists who release the stems/ multitracks for their music are very smart to do so. Attracts attention their way and exposes them to a new audience when they are remixed or sampled. Can't think of a reason everyone shouldn't do it.

Zachary F Parker

Most people who say Joy Division/Talking Heads suck have no idea what post-punk is supposed to sound like

Death Grips fans are up there in with BTS stans in terms of toxicity. In fact, they're probably worse. Not sure if it's still a thing, but the way they would non stop compare DG and JPEGMAFIA was pretty ridiculous considering how different the music is and some of the rhetoric was borderline racist.

Black Dresses breaking up is one of the most underrated L's of the year

Kyle Cahill

M.I.A. is the most criminally underrated Hip Hop artist of all time, not only did she get she gain underground success and respect by rappers like Nas with Arula, she followed through with a successful sophomore release with Kala gaining commercial and critical success and releasing one of the greatest Political Hip Hop songs of all time with Paper Planes, incorporating Rap and Electropop successfully with Political messages. Not only that, but /\/\ /\ Y /\ was so horribly misunderstood, people have forgotten about it. The album was so ahead of its time, in an age where bombastic and experimental music is much more widely accepted in Pop and Rap music in the internet age, /\/\ /\ Y /\ is the unsung hero, and deserves to be revisited. If Yeezus was “5 years too early”, /\/\ /\ Y /\ is a decade too early. AIM was certainly not great but with all of that beforehand, M.I.A. is never mentioned in Female Rappers, not mentioned in Experimental Rap, and overall needs the praise she deserves.

Pvzuzu

You cant make experimental music if you don't produce the music yourself

Kyle Cahill

So far all of your Patreon-exclusive classic record livestreams have been of albums recorded by male artists and male-dominated bands. What’s your take on that? Would you like to see it change?

100 gecs sounds like if Allie X had based her whole sound around "Bitch" instead of "Catch"

Eldena Doubleca5t

sheryl crow is underrated. she has so many hits from the 90s and they hold up well today

When I first heard it, I had a crackpot theory that "Father of the Bride" was really a relationship story between Humanity and Mother Nature. The story was so vague because the characters portrayed through Ezra Koenig and Danielle Haim aren't real people, but embody Humanity and the Earth - with the album taking mostly humanity's perspective (since that's the perspective the listener would be most familiar with), all of the references to nature in the track titles and lyrics, and the Earth literally being the cover of the album. This also led me to believe the reason we never see the "Father" character is because the father of the bride (of nature) is God. Hence all of the references to religion/Christianity in the lyrics and the music. Bringing up the album cover again, the title "Father Of The Bride" hovers above and encircles the Earth - as if "in the heavens."

Insane Clown Posse's music is so underrated by most music critics! I mean, some of their songs are sick as f**k (i.e. 'Hokus Pokus' and 'Piggy Pie') and that 'Dark Carnival' concept is pretty interesting.

Joao Gilberto is one of the GOATs. The man invented a new type of music (Bossa Nova) in his sister's bathroom. And, when he passed away last year, his life should have been more loudly celebrated.

Seinfeld

He's least proud of the DAMN review

I know you've been avoiding me Anthony, (weak, fight me) but it's time for people to hear your opinion on this: People only dislike DAMN because they compare it to TPAB, and not because the album itself is mediocre or average. If you had only ever listened to DAMN, people would be rating it much higher, since the quality of the album is inarguable once you eliminate factors that arise solely due to the comparisons it inevitably receives to Kendrick's older work.

twitter is by far the most toxic social media out there. its responsible for many young peoples self conciousness and depression. and if you are famous and someone finds some old tweets that can even slightly be interpreted as offensive you are the 2nd coming of hitler and your career is over. it is contributing to the downfall of western civilization.

Your hatred of Lil Baby and Gunna is honestly way too much. Yes, they're not exactly great and I'm not the biggest fan of them (especially gunna), but almost every time they come up in a feature or something, you always end up shitting on them and the whole track even if they were pretty fine on it and dismiss them as "thugger clones"

You underrated the new disclosure album

Charlie Davenport

Hier Encore By Charles Aznavour is one of the best classic French Pop/Chanson records and deserves more praise.

Saywanay .

who has the upper hand in the music youtuber battle royale? adam neely, andrew huang, or melon?

albinoverse

Kanye is the modern Nina Simone

Does art/music have a wider appeal if it is made with a level of ambiguity? My first thought is "Lift Your Skinny Fists by Godspeed" music that is mostly free from vocals is so much more versatile in terms of personal takeaway/interpretation Would you agree with this generally?

Alex Lifeson of Rush is the most underrated guitarist of any majorly successful band, probably due to Geddy Lee and Neil Peart being especially prodigious on their respective instruments. Alex’s songwriting and musical layering, along with some amazing guitar solos, make him an easy contender for the most important member of the band.

Daniel DeGeorges

Do you think that an artist’s most celebrated record is in most cases the best one to get into a discography? Like would you recommend your decade list as an entry to someone for most of those artists/bands?

Stefan Lal

A pair of tough questions: what's a music genre you don't like, and what's your favourite album from that genre?

Yoshielder

Visually, your reviews are too professional and serious now. They were more enjoyable when you had your older lower quality camera and you had more silly video edits and vocal distortions. Nowadays it feels like I’m watching a college professor talk especially with your circle “Harry Potter” glasses. You came off a lot less serious with the bulky black square ones. You don’t even use phone recordings for your outros anymore. It just don’t hit the same

Drake Parker

No one has actually ever listened to an entire King Crimson album

Trevor Young

Joy Division was one of those bands that made music "click" for me, as in they connected the music that came before them to the music that came after them in a way that made me go "oh yeah, I get it now". What are some bands that had a similar effect on you?

Abe Froman

Gentle Giant is up there with the best progressive rock bands of all time. Their unique mix of rock with various medieval-esque melodies and fantastic vocal harmonies has aged incredibly well to this day, and I'd argue that their albums are also up there with some of the best the genre has to offer. They deserve more credit than they get

Even Luck

Must you feel only relevant emotions to the subject matter when enjoying music? Is it okay to listen to a song about one topic but derive something completely different emotionally from the track, even if the subject matter has nothing to do with what you are feeling? (An example I suppose is Give Up by The Postal Service, the production speaks to me on another level while I can't necessarily relate to the lyrics on every track)

Being called the Best Teeth in the Game has some serious weight to it, and there's questions we need answered: Do you use an electric tooth brush? How often do you floss? What type of toothpaste/mouthwash do you recommend?

YouTube rap is better than SoundCloud rap

King Krule and Earl Sweatshirt occupy the same niche in their respective genre's. Extremely moody lofi depressive slow jazzy beats with lyrics that will sting you in your soul they are so sad.

Saywanay .

I hate that playboi carti gets sole credit for the invention of music, time and space when one could argue that Blueface was just as instrumental in the making of these concepts.

Vipul Konnur

Craig Finn is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His lyrics are deeply literary, but he uses universal themes like youth, addiction, religion, etc and masterful storytelling to make them accessible to virtually any listener. He’s basically millennial Bob Dylan.

Ben

Does a dud album by an artist you like affect your opinion on their previous work? For example, does 'American Dream' by LCD Soundsystem or 'Making A Door Less Open' by Car Seat Headrest make you feel sort of different about their other albums- even if you still really like them.

While it’s good in small doses, much of the smiths material can become repetitive and dull fairly quickly.

Lochlan Bailey

Have you ever thought about reviewing/discussing Tiny Desk concerts? Imo, they are hit or miss, but the good ones (Lizzo, Roddy Ricch to name a couple) give a different perspective to songs, i.e. live/acoustic versions of instrumentals.

Paul Prete

Protomartyr's Ultimate Success Today should be considered a cornerstone in post punk

I AGREE! Song Against Sex, Where You'll Find Me Now, Gardenhead, Naomi... so many good songs that are DEFINITELY on par with a lot of the bangers on ITAOTS. People need to stop sleeping on it!
