This was in the list of comments I sent Anthony. I'm a huge Jim O'Rourke fan; unfortunately Anthony is less familiar. Kinda illustrates your point. So FWIW: I AGREE -Austen

The Needle Drop

Hobo Johnson gets singled out in an unfair way for being misogynist just because people find him cringey - I think you can make a legitimate argument about obsessive and unhealthy romantic tendencies he has in his music but if you're going to look at it through a feminist lense you would have to widen the scope of that criticism to at least include the plethora of whiny modern emo and post-hardcore bands that write about dealing with rejection and lost love all the time. I dont understand how someone can criticize Hobo Johnson for this and act like la dispute wasnt writing about the exact same shit in a pretty similiar way on their debut album, which has garnered pretty significant acclaim over the years

Austin Gaines

Why don’t you do any In Flames reviews? They’re giants in the melodic metal genre and there is a lot of love and hate surrounding their change in style over the years. Honestly I just wanna know your opinion!

You wont review Meme rappers like Yung Gravy or Bbno$

Anthony, you should continue with a music career. I would love to hear what you would create.

E.L.P are underrated as hell

Arnarok

Can we get jay z tier list/worst to best?

David Pedron

100 gecs will never make any sense to boomers

This is let's argue, not let's agree :P

Honestly Game of Thrones' last two seasons were so fucking astronomically bad I would almost agree with this

FELCommentary

earth by lil dicky was so bad that it couldne=t even be saved by it's countless features. the writing is bad and unoriginal, as is the instrumental

How is YoungBoy Never Broke Again popular. it doesn't make sense.

Epic Rap Battles of history are incredibly underrated in terms of the lyricism they display. Some of those rap battles have fucking BARS. The first example that comes to mind was in the Albert Einstein rap battle when he said "I'm as dope as two rappers, ... that means Albert E equals MC squared". YOU CANT TELL ME THATS NOT FIRE.

Soy milk is the best plant milk. Almond milk is just watery and gross, coconut milk doesn't have a neutral enough flavour to operate properly as a milk substitute, oat milk is decent and comes a close second though.

I don’t even fucking want to go into it but you misuse lots of phrases. I’ve heard you say “I’ll digress”, and “up and till” multiple times but I’ll be honest your misuse of “reinventing the wheel” has legitimately caused real life family arguments

CarlySortof

joey badass is very under appreciated in rap, he has had a very good discography, while being one of the most versatile rappers in the game, he should be in the discussion for being one of the best of the decade.

Billie Eilish is good but overrated

TPAB is the best hip hop album of all time

I would like to know if there is any reason I have never seen you talk about the Residents. They are easily one of the best examples of anonymity in music and have consistently put out unique projects for the past 5 decades.

The people who push the idea that Hobo Johnson makes "incel music" are a shining example of toxic masculinity; by taking an album like TFOHJ and writing off its mentions of failed relationships and yearning for love as a nod to inceldom, the people who levy this "criticism" against him implicitly send the message that men shouldn't be open with their emotions or talk about their experiences, failed relationships, etc if doesn't end in a world where he mans up and gets a woman, becomes comfortably single, or has some type of definitive/"happy" ending.

Faris Al-Raqqad

It was a shame to not see a single XXX or Ski Mask song on the Top Songs of The Decade list if that lists' intention was that of a slightly more objective/compiling the year fashion. Though it does make perfect sense neither were on the Album List.

Run The Jewels are the most underrated rap group of all time. 3 albums, all killer, they have a bad single here and there but almost all of the time their music is banger after banger. They deserve a spot in the mainstream.

Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties is one of the strongest recent entries in the americana/folk punk genres and has two of the best recent concept albums

Travis Farmer

Instrumental Hip-Hop is one of the least appreciated subgenres around. A specific instance of this is EL-P, who gets mad props for his work with RTJ, and on Def Jux and Rawkus, but rarely are records like Collecting the Kid (with the scarily relevant “Jukie Skate Rock” and rythmic trickery abound on “Intrigue in the House of India”, High Water (a collabo with Blue Series Continuum), or Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 celebrated much despite their quality. These are definitely not records built for radio and the lack of vocals may kill the catchiness for some, however, there is much more to love beyond those aspects.

MintyMuncho

It’s a bummer that people aren’t acknowledging that the 2010s was a pretty amazing decade for metal. It was great to see that the majority of the most celebrated releases were from grass roots bands that didn’t have the backing or a scene based label! It’s crazy that in the same decade bands as diverse as Nails, Ghost, Behemoth, Power Trip, Deafheaven and High on Fire could all define this decade. At the same time a bunch of older band released great releases or comeback records such as Judas Priest, Possessed, At The Gates and Carcass all releases stuff that felt youthful and current.

Jack Bayley

king gizzard & the lizard wizard is one of the best groups in the game. they are not only trying (and nailing) things that no other artists are trying, with concepts on records such as flying microtonal banana and nonagon infinity. they are also talented enough to completely reinvent themselves with each record (with styalistic jumps such as going from psychedelic folk rock on fishing for fishies to thrash metal on infest the rats nest. and need i even mention their 2017 run? they put out five albums that, while they are not all amazing, they are all at least good.

Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar/Mechanical Animals/Holy Wood triptych remains underappreciated in the rock and industrial spheres and Mechanical Animals is a "mall goth"/glam industrial masterpiece.

Given unlimited time and resources to listen to every album made in the decade, your best of decade list would only have 25% of the albums placed on it.

Kamasi Washington’s album the Epic is really good, but it isn’t the only possible choice for Best Jazz Album of the Decade, since Wayne Shorter, Melissa Aldana, Ambrose Akinmusire, Shabaka Hutchings, and others have released innovative and interesting jazz music to match, or arguably surpass, the innovations of Kamasi Washington

FKA twigs is the new Tori Amos. Both make very arty music, with a strong focus on vulnerability and female sexuality/ empowerment. All twigs needs to do is drop some tracks about religion and shit

Jon Hoskins

My bad just watched the January let’s argue and somebody said pretty much the exact same thing

Generally very true, but never forget Morörhead did Triple H’s theme back in the day. And they seem to be grooving Code Orange lately

John Pindzia

Viper the Rapper deserves more credit for his influence on cloud rap. There would be no Die Lit without Heartless Hoodlum or The Hiram Clarke Hustler where Viper’s seemingly minimalistic and spacey production is surprisingly nuanced and his simple and repetitive lyrics make for legitimately catchy tracks. He is a talented songwriter and producer and is more than just a meme

you should review more music of non-English speaking countries

car seat headrest is literally just a bunch of discount 303 south chester clones

Overkill and Sepultura deserve more love as integral members of thrash - their discographies in the mid 80s to early 90s were consistently strong, more so than Anthrax’s was imo, and Years of Decay is a classic

The WWE have terrible taste in music.

Death Grips doesn't sound experimental after many listens it starts to make sense and sound more normal. I guess it's because you know what to expect?

Injury Reserve's Self Titled is a decent 8 at least. Bright, quirky, consistently hard production. Well written verses across the board too. The only true dud on the record is New Hawaii

Daniel Parton

Ranking of public transit pastimes: 1. Music 2. Analog Book 3. Podcasts 4. Audio Book 5. Video Games

haughty garbage

Personally: I fucking Love Relapse and I can't stand the Staccato flow from Revival.

Which of the following flows from Eminem do you prefer and which one do you find the most annoying: The Lazy mumble flow from Encore The Weird Accents (But SIck Rhyme Schemes) from Relapse The Aggressive Flow from Recovery and Bad meets Evil EP The Staccato Flow From Revival. Also, Eminem Tier list please or Worst to Best when ?!

Mos Def has the best flow in rap PERIOD

What if Joji's vocal improvements over the years are driven by his voice recovering from the Filthy Frank days?

Northlane isn't in the rock/heavy rock conversation as much as they should be. They're heavily influenced by bands like Tool and Meshuggah, but far from being a clone of either.

Hopsin’s Happy Ending is kind of so bad it’s funny. It’s completely horrible and a little infuriating, but I can’t help but laugh at the fact that what I’m watching/listening to is real and unironic.

Isaac Peachey

Brazil is one of the best countries when the topic is music. We had the bossa nova, the mpb, the tropicalia, great rock bands and rap groups and a nice and always progressive in terms of quality indie scene. The stories abou the brazilian musicians in USA and other countries before and after the dictatorship that Brazil had in the 60's shows the love and apreciation other musicians had (like JoĂŁo Gilberto with Stan Getz) with brazilian music but that was forgotten after the dictatorship period ended

Are we still friends? Is the best song on Igor.

Cooper

[sLUms] is the next big wave in hip hop and deserve more coverage. The level of introspection and experimental production is exactly what our generation needs, especially within the black community.

Music can’t be objective. Wether or not something is good is purely based on the individual, and every aspect of a song can’t meet a criteria that fits it into this objective category. Whenever I hear someone say, “I think this is good but this is objectively better” it pains me because they’re essentially blocking out their personal opinion, and usually because someone told them otherwise.

Brendan

Tough question: the oldest record you've reviewed is 1965's I Talk With Spirits by Roland Kirk. Are you only interested in reviewing modern music? What is the oldest piece of music you would consider critically reviewing in a Classics Week review? (Not that I'm exceptionally interested in hearing you review music >50 years old instead of more modern records, personally.)

The sheer amount of times I've heard Lizzo's "Good As Hell" on my works cafeteria radio has killed any amount of enjoyment I previously had for her music. Whenever I hear her voice I have to fight this sharp Pavlovian response to go, to run. I'm working on it.

Slowdive is one of the best band names ever conceived. Few names embody a band's sound so perfectly, while also simply sounding cool af

beammeupjosi

You sleeping on Sublime melon?

Most of Frank Zappa's rock material past Joe's Garage is drab and boring, owing to its focus on (pretty bad) comedy above all other aspects like tasteful musicianship and good songwriting (with notable exceptions like You Are What You Is). His classical material from that era kicks ass though.

The Grateful Dead are one of the most important American bands, but they had zero direct influence anywhere else.

Kevin Marcellus Horan

“Real” by Kendrick Lamar sucks. Please stop making it play on the radio at my job

Jacob Moore

Not really an argument just wanted to know if you were aware of the recent YouTube documentary about Stefan Burnett’s previous hip hop group FYRE and what your thoughts were

Andrew Shaktah

Dedicated is a better album than E.M.OTION. (deluxe edition excepted) It doesn't have any songs that rate below a 7/10 and is a more sonically interesting and consistent project overall, even if its best songs aren't as good as the best ones on E.M.OTION A or B.

WhyDoIBother

March 2015 was the best month for music in the 2010s. To Pimp a Butterfly, The Powers That B, I Don't Like Shit, Carrie & Lowell, NO NOW, The Ark Work, We Cool?, Madeon's Adventure, Today I Wrote Nothing, Fantasy Empire, AJR's Living Room... ...okay definitely not that last one but still. Name another month that topped March 2015. WE 👏 WERE 👏 FED. 👏

Declan Gray

Madlib’s Shades of blue is the closest that hip hop can get to jazz while still being considered hip hop. It’s a wonderful combination of live instrumentation and sampling. All the while it informs the listener of the history of the blue note label through some of the fun skits in between songs. It doesn’t get enough credit for how well it blends the two genres

The 2010s was the best decade for music in human history. While there are perhaps others that have been more ground-breaking (60s and 70s), no decade comes close to the 10s in terms of sheer quality.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon was the best PS1 game ever made.

Drive Like Jehu’s Yank Crime is the best post-hardcore, math rock album; even better than Slint’s Spiderland.

John Fu

The Tarzan soundtrack is the best music Phil Collins has ever produced

Bryan Gilbey

Bonito Generation is a far superior album to Time n Place. Its crisp and somewhat sterile electropop production is a much better fit for Sarah's cutesy, pure and childlike vocal style than the loose rock instrumentation of the latter.

Natalia Lafourcade could very well be Mexico's RosalĂa, but the lack of an international response towards Mexican music makes artists not want to experiment with sounds as much.

KISS are kinda hacks. Their gimmick might've aged well if they actually bothered to DO something with it in the music, as opposed to the lame creepy-uncle-rock they dealt out for decades. I'm not opposed to fun, braindead arena rock, but it all feels like wasted potential. They get grouped with/compared to Alice Cooper a lot, but creatively Alice was on another level & had nothing to worry about. (Detroit Rock City still rips tho)

Mark Berman

Billie's comments about hip-hop is nothing new to anyone who is more than just a casual radio listener to the genre. Many people already know that the lyrics about guns, women, and other typical topics are self-serving and embellished, or just used to prove a deeper thematic point. We've had gatekeepers in the industry for years (pusha, jay-z, hell even 50 calling out rick ross), so i'm not sure what Billie has to add at this point, or why people are taking it so seriously

Rick the Lai is a swell guy and you should show his channel some love

Logan Colburn

Cop shoot cop is underrated and better than a lot of early swans industrial music

Which reviews of yours are you the most proud of?

Kevin Frey

Just called my dad, can confirm “Not ready to be a father” doesn’t work for 12 years

Corey Ruef

If more scenes had the energy and passion of local hardcore scenes music would be a better place. Unfortunately as you've previously, and correctly, stated its a genre so obsessed with its own criteria that once a band is labeled hard enough that its peers have deemed it hard to its very core they rarely want to progress or make things interesting musically and deviate from the formula got them there. Even though most of the people in those scenes listen to lots of other types of music that would be totally electric with that kind of energy and could draw more people into caring about DIY music scenes.

Connor Craven

A mr. rager collab tape (kid cudi x travis scott) could potentially be better than kids see ghosts

The Best Pizza Connoissuer

Sweet Trip is easily the most underrated band of all time. V:D:C and You Will Never Know Why are near if not perfect albums that have fantastic production that meets if not exceeds anything else that was coming out in IDM at the times of their release. On top of that, YWNKW has some great songwriting as well!

Drive has the best film soundtrack of all time. You got Kavinsky's Nightcall, A Real Hero and the score introduces the amazing atmosphere of the movie.

cassettes are an advantageous way for DIY bands and independent musicians to make physical media affordably and (done correctly) have a comparable warm tone to vinyl. Cassettes are the way of the (near) future.

Deftones' self-titled album is constantly overlooked and has so many strong cuts and a foreboding atmosphere

remora

People who love MGMT’s Little Dark Age and it’s overall sound need to give credit to Ariel Pink who perfected the sound and aesthetic long before LDA

Andrew Shaktah

As amazing as NIN's The Downward Spiral is, a lot of its lyrics sound like a 15 year old edgelord's tumblr posts

Tristan Noel

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are the greatest Rock band that nobody knows.

Nathaniel Zaccagnini

Yolandi Visser should play as Harley Quinn. Not only did she prove she can act in the movie Chappie, she also has the perfect balance of crazy/hot which is very fitting for the role.

Andrew Shaktah

William Basinski's The Disintegration Loops, as nice as they are, get overhyped because of the story behind it. Because of this, albums such as Melancholia get overlooked

Why don’t people get criticized for being obsessed with their dogs like cat people get criticized?

Griffin

The weezer debut album cover kind of sucks. If it weren't for it being iconic and didnt match up with the other covers then it would be considered so

Does Chance love his wife?

Pure Comedy is just "We Live in a Society - The Song"

beef

Grapes are actually the best fruit. They’re also the most underrated

lowkeymatt

Plastic Beach is as much of a rap album as Igor.

Dance tracks like Futsal Shuffle are a double-edged sword: they give an artist a hot moment in mainstream culture but risk pigeonholing them as a novelty act (or at least "the one with the dance").

Brendan James

We need less popular music about the one girl, and more songs about more interesting themes, like visiting the year 3000.

Joey Badass is the most overlooked rapper in the game rn

Reverie Foster

This is the decade for the fourth wave of ska. Strap in and pick it up

Chris Hickson

A$AP Rocky while bring a cultural icon shouldn’t necessarily be held to the same regard musically.

Calvin Michael

Midlife Crisis is actually the least interesting song on Angel Dust

Logic would be Buttigieg, Biden would be Joe Budden. Also Quelle Chris is Yang

Foxx Navarro

2012-2017 is a surprisingly good lovemaking album

Foxx Navarro

Bruh Writing’s on the Wall is a banger wtf you talking about

Burke LeFauve

Ben 10 (2005) has the greatest tv show theme ever made

Burke LeFauve

If they didn't break up, the New Radicals wouldve been the face of rock for the 2000s

Jenny McGlinn

While he is critically acclaimed, IGLOOGHOST deserves so much more praise than he gets, he blends glitch and IDM with modern trap style beats like literally no one else in music does, he’s been a huge influence on PC music and Neƍ Wax Bloom is one of the best albums this decade

kendrick is a great albums artist but as a featured artist he is consistently underwhelming or out performed by whoever he appears with

Why don't you make the "review your music segment" a livestream on patreon? That way is not as time consuming and it can give a certain boost on your patreon. Also i know more about brazilian music than you, why don't i return with my channel?

danilo gondim

Why don't you review more drum and bass? It's one of the largest underground genres in the UK and across Europe. Do you just not like it or never gotten that deep into it?

Connor Truelove

Kirk Hammett is the most overly criticized guitarist of all time, he’s not a technical God like his thrash counterparts (Marty Friedman, Alex Skolnick etc) but he is a perfect fit for Metallica and he wrote extremely memorable solos in the 80s and early 90s that will always be remembered in metal history.

Bojack Horseman was the best TV show of the 2010's.

Billie Eilish deserved all the Grammys she got and there was no snubs. People are just upset about an industry plant winning in the industry, despite her music actually just being very good.

Benjamin Lisboa

Better hot take, "mumble rap" is light-years better than Express Rap acts like Eminem, Machine Gun Kelly, or Hopsin

carsausage

Pure Comedy is AOTC so far. (century) There is no better analysis of post-technological-revolution society.

The Powers That B contains a LOT of great music for Death Grips, but I found the pairing disappointing. Neither side have much to do with each other, and the contrast doesn't really add up to anything. I actually think it would have been better to pair Jenny Death with The Bottomless Pit as they have much more similar sounds. Meanwhile notm on its own is one of the top 3 DG projects.

NevadaNate

side note: peanut butter is so very vegan. 100%, it is a 10/10 in terms of how vegan it is. but not nutella. nutella sucks.

pretzels

here is an unpopular take among my friend group. i am in college, and i have made an incredibly important discovery: 5-7 moderately heaping spoonfuls of peanut butter is a light to decent meal, or at least enough of a meal to tide you over for 1-2 hours or so

pretzels

Your should re-review the black mirror episode "Hang the DJ" because you completely missed the point in your review. You said the moral is to blindly trust the program but it's literally the exact opposite

Adam mezzarone

Imagine Dragons often gets crucified for making awful pop rock, but they’re nowhere NEAR the worst band out there in the genre. Bands like Bastille, American Authors, Walk the Moon, etc. make far more mundane and soulless music that still lands hits on the alternative charts, and yet they get none of the flack.

tryhard

This. Try putting on dance yrself clean and being like “no wait guys it picks up after 3 mins”

Riley Schmedeman

How do you feel about reviewing music made in foreign languages? Also, how relevant is it for you to understand the meaning of lyrics properly and being able to interpret it on your own?

Jim O'rourke is not only one of the best solo musicians OF ALL TIME, he also is incredible in his work with other people and on the back end of albums, like mixing Joanna Newsom's Ys, his work with Sonic Youth and Gastr del Sol, and the Wilco albums he has worked on (YHF and Ghost being their best albums period, YHF is a classic.) He deserves WAY more credit for everything he's done, and he is a visionary.

Uncut Gems was the best movie score of 2019. Watchmen had the best TV score.

Corey Ruef

Dethklok were unironically one of the best melodeath bands of all time. The way Adult Swim shafted Brendan Small makes my blood boil.

Office Policy

Think about it, the timeline actually add up, almost a little too well

â€ȘReplica is one of the first post-plunderphonics albums and is the best album of the 2010’s‬

â€ȘOasis only had two good albums in the 90’s at the beginning of their career, and they should, therefore, have about the same reputation as Weezer.‬

Logic’s lyrics are narcissistic and annoyingly self-indulgent. And while I greatly enjoy all of his albums from 2010 onward, excluding Supermarket, I can’t always get past the fact that, more than half of the time, he’s rapping about how good of a rapper he is.

Kanye West’s “chipmunk soul” sampling style in the early 2000’s inadvertently inspired the live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks movie franchise.

The reason rock music lost its popularity isn't just because tastes changed, its also because most of the popular bands at the turn of the 2000's either started making bad music or worse, started making music that was barely rock. Listening to bands like Modest Mouse and Arctic Monkeys sound like now, you would have never guessed what their first albums were like.

ElephantofDoom

Not only is C418's Minecraft Album revolutionary, but so is the rest of his discography ngl. Every album slaps h a r d

in one of your livestreams at some point(i think it was a non patreon one), you hinted heavily about a two of the albums you were going to review for classics week, with one of them being laughing stock by talk talk, and the other being velocity : design : comfort by sweet trip. you did end up reviewing laughing stock, but what happened to the sweet trip review? i was really looking forward to it because its one of my favorite albums. sad face

Josh Ritter is an an incredible musician and criminally underrated

If politicians were rappers, Bernie would be Kendrick and Biden would be Logic

Punks not dead, and it hasn't ever been, look at acts like: idles, pup, fidlar, Jeff rosenstock, not to mention that punk culture is still among the most influential counter cultures: doc martens, plaid pants, chains. Not to mention that almost every local diy scene is comprised of almost entirely punk bands or at least heavily influenced by punk. And lastly the resurgence of noise and dissonance: acts like 100gecs and death grips that borrow heavily from punk.

How did you rank your 10/10 albums while doing the decade-end list? Since you (ostensibly) love all of them as much as you can love an album.

Owen W

Lcd Soundsytems music, while great, is only good for dancing if you wanna dance on your own. Their songs are either too melancholic or take so long to build up that if you put on an LCD track at a party, people will get bored before the song gets interesting.

danny brown should become a shining example in the hip hop community and across the music industry about how he has managed to overcome his substance abuse while remaining a talented rapper, possibly influencing newer generation rappers to follow suit.

Harvey Greene

Lil Wayne’s I am not a human being part 2 is a worse album than Angelic 2 the Core

unknowngeek777

Elaborating a little, the version you listened to was missing 4 songs (Bye Bye Baby feat. Mykki Blanco, Chakras feat. The-Dream, Last Name feat. Ant Clemons, City in the Sky feat. Ty$/070 Shake/Desiigner/The-Dream/Kid Cudi) and some previously unheard guest verses (Cudi on The Storm, Young Thug/Ty$ on Hurricane, Quavo/Offset on Alien)

Max Limit

Billie Eilish is overrated.

since he is going to be spending the next good quarter of his life as a father, I feel Kanye's "born again Christian" lifestyle and sound will remain the center point of his career for the next 10 years at least.

Harvey Greene

Hieroglyphics' 3rd Eye Vision is the definitive best hip hop group album. It had great production for its time, interesting and genuinely funny bars, as well getting to know all of the members and their styles with those short tracks dedicated to each member.

Omar AlHashmi

King 810 is underrated. Although some of the writing is trash.

i think (julian casablancas +) the Voidz go vastly under appreciated as some of their music sounds nothing like what most rock bands are doing right now. Julians vocal style is super weird and their lo fi style on Tyranny is one of the more strange production choices I’ve seen for a popular rock band. Also Human Sadness is one of the best songs of the decade no lie

Riley Schmedeman

Why does no one talk about Endless? It sparks vibrancy, soul, passion, and intimacy. The instrumentals are innovative and blissful, with Franks vocals and lyrics being euphoric, tearjerking, and energetic, sometimes even all at once. It was my favorite album of the decade, and it really deserves more notority than it gets, being overshadowed by Blonde, the critical acclaim of Channel ORANGE, and the influence Nostalgia had. Sure, it may not be as grand, influenical, or impactful, but it sure is just as good, if not better than all his albums and mixtapes.

superdude75561

Not all “Christian music” is bad. There is the genre of “Christian music” which is the boring worship music that we’re usually referring to, and then there’s music made by Christians that is faith inspired, like much of Kendrick Lamar’s music, Twenty One Pilots, and even pre-Jesus Is King Kanye made some good faith inspired music. There’s also a lot of classic country and folk music that’s Christian that is a lot of fun to listen to. And lots of classical music was written as praises to God. If you really look into it, the bland contemporary Christian music that we’re used to today really makes up a small percentage of “Christian music” in the grand scheme of things.

shramp

Since the last time you checked it out, the rest of Yandhi has leaked, and now that we have it in its entirety, I can easily say that it's one of Kanye's best works.

Max Limit

Would you agree Keane-Hope and Fears is the best album that they have made?
