This was very powerful and tough to watch.

There was nothing great about that war, I have reas some of the diaries of soldiers who served and the horror they put on that paper sent chills down my spine. It was interesting to see the faces of men who had probably never seen a camera in their life and staring at in in absolute awe, but for me that was the only positive part of this video. PTSD was never even known about back then, and most of the soldiers that returned traumatised were called cowards by the priveliged who had never held a rifle in their life, can you imagine how insulting that is? One guy could only sleep on the floor under his bed, another had the shakes that he couldnt stop, most ended up turning to drink or just killed themselves because they couldnt handle the nightmares and trauma. I don't think there has ever been a film that has been made about WW1 that genuinly captures how nasty it was, sure we have 1917 all quiet on the eastern front etc... but they are all tame, a saving private ryan level of detail is needed to truly show how horrible it was.

It's a tough watch for sure. I watched it originally and it was interesting to watch along with you. It gave me a better sense of life in the trenches than perhaps any other documentary. I liked how Jackson used interviews with the WW1 soldiers, which you can find on the BBC website and all over YouTube if you want to put faces to the names. I agree that it was like a Ken Burns documentary, but speeded up, making you feel some of the pressure of battle. Obviously one thing to note for non-British viewers: this was very much from a British Tommy's perspective but that doesn't mean the Americans and others didn't play a decisive role in the war. It was made to reflect the British experience of trench warfare using footage from the Imperial War Museums and from the BBC for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. It was never intended to make it seem like the war was just between Germans and Brits.

that would be interesting for me - my nan is in a few episodes of that sort of haha

Oooh (I'm at the end now) Can you React to 'Peaky Blinders' that is set after WW1 and people trying to deal with the aftermath.

Danny Heywood

no-one is buying the next BS war, it's over for them.

I know most of this was Generals being Generals because they were important, not because they were good at their job. But...why defend all this Mud?... Just leave it to them. The French learned nothing by making the Maginot Line and thinking they could never go through Belgium again in WW2 but they really were brave at Verdun. At least the French were defending something besides some Mud and Puddles haha.

Danny Heywood

He probably won't kill anyone in the German Trench but it must be annoying.

Danny Heywood

No, he was shooting that Lewis Gun upwards because bullets come down...And to make Tea.

Danny Heywood

The trenches also had no straight lines because Ze Germans could set up a Machine Gun.

Danny Heywood

Peter Jackson used professional lipreaders to watch the footage and then actors repeated the words . Really effective

thanks for doing this KB, a very good film and shows the true horrors of what took place, very moving and so well done. gonna need to do something light now before bed! Shocking the numbers, I think for some scale the USA and UK forces in WW2 both lost around 350,000 with the British and commonwealth forces losing nigh on 1,000,000 in WW1. Shockingly I think in WW2 the Germans I want to say lost 3-5,000,000 men and the Russians 8-10,000,000... just beyond comprehension,

Just a snippet of info, watching the service and the men being buried wrapped in blankets, the family of the soldier was billed for 10 shillings for the blanket, so not only did they have to cope with the loss they had to pay for the blanket they buried them in.
