This is a fantastic series - my favourite by far. The writing is first rate, the cast are on song and it's just a perfect blend of the whole production teams talents. An iconic series and very much loved by the British public - and rightly so. You're in for a treat. Looking forward to the next one!

The Christmas special is good. Based on Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol. The other special is not very good, especially set against the rest of black adder.

Blackadder season 4 is easily the funniest and the one liners and deadpan replies from Blackadder are comedy gems.

I'm aware of when it was written and broadcast and I'd be dissappointed if anyone didn't know when ww1 was. My point was it's incredibly unlikely to offend anyone or be insensitive in the previous seasons because of the time periods. In this one there were people alive who experienced what's happening in the show and the writers almost certainly had parents and grandparents who were there. I'm pretty sure they'd also have veterans who watched, not a huge number obviously because they'd mostly have been dead by the time it aired.

General Melchett is such a good character, Stephen Fry plays him perfectly. This series is a bit more emotional, as for many of us the people in it were grandparents or great grandparents, so there's a personal connection with the futility of their situation, and their lives in the hands of out of touch generals. Hugh Laurie's George is also a brilliant character, highly educated, well meaning, muppet!

Yes we had this discussion, and the majority agreed. He's got plenty of time and then some to finish S4 before the Christmas season (his schedule permitting of course) - so made sense to hold off on that till then.

Not wanting to be pedantic here, but... this was broadcast in 1989 - The Great War was 1914-1918... are you suggesting there were people, who had to be at the very least in their late 80s/early 90s, watching this in great numbers?
I think what you're getting at was the legacy of those people who gave their lives, and the legacy of those in the next war, is where the sensitivity was necessary - not diminishing it in a way that might be seen as frivolous.

It's just such a perfect balance of characters, it's what makes it peak Blackadder. You have strong confient blackadder with two idiots following him and making his life hell, you have Blackadders equal in Darling, who is much more intelligent and a counterpoint to Blackadder but prone to his own downfalls, and then a complete nutjob halfwit in command to give Blackadder an authority to fight/outsmart. It took 3 previous seasons but this is exactly what every season before it worked towards. Glad you're in to S4 and plenty of moments I'm looking forward to seeing you react to. I think everyone here knows one episode in particular I think you're going to love.

Not related to Blackadder but if your wanting royalty fighting in WW1 then I believe King Albert 1 of Belgium did quite of fighting on front lines and worth a little looking into if interested in the history.

Important to remember there were people in the audience who experienced this time period so they needed to strike the balance between comedy and sensitivity to the audience. As it goes on you'll probably agree they did it perfectly.

Series 4 is by far the best. The final scene in the last episode is actually quite poignant / emotional. ๐

Fab ep and reaction! ๐ This is the best series for sure.
Shout out for Ben Elton's 'The Thin Blue Line' (1995-'96) with Rowan Atkinson, a sitcom set in a UK police station. Only two series, it's a laugh. Especially this dickish detective character who doesn't like people "FANNYING ABOUT!". ๐

great stuff KB the best Blackadder series, they did a one off film in 1999/2000 for the Millennium Dome in London, where they invent a Time Machine!, was also I think a Xmas one too, may be good to save for Xmas time!
If this puts you In the mood for more British WW1 material, I have placed before in the relevant message threads but there some great one's I am sure you would enjoy, even if not necessarily reacting too!
Peter Jackson did an amazing documentary/ film on WW1 they shall not grow old where they turned WW1 footage in to colour and 4k and used lip readers, to record sound for it and the soldiers speaking! It is incredible and has soldiers who were there talking through their experiences of WW1
Joyeux Noel, a film that would be a lovely little one at Xmas, but is on the notorious Christmas Day 1914 WW1 truce, the film exaggerates the experience a bit! (Diane Kruger) but is a great film, with some tremendous actors, set on frontline where French, German and Scottish trenches meet.
Journey's End, believe a adaptation from a book/ play, about a British unit moving in to the frontline before the German 1918 spring offensive, it is not for the action, it is a slow character and situation based film, so may be one for personal viewing but is very moving and honest, has Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham.
Wipers times, whole film on YouTube it's about British soldiers who find a printing press in Belgium during war and create and publish for the frontline troops a satirical anti establishment newspaper to keep up troop morale on frontline!
I am very big in to British WW1 and WW2 history! so sorry ๐ this has stirred me up!!!

One more thing to keep an eye on is the names of the episodes in this series - theyโre all common phrases/terms which start with a military rank (except the final episode which is a single word)
This was Captain Cook, and thereโs still Corporal, Major, Private and General to come

Yeah, there's no royalty in this Blackadder, although the young royals did have some involvement in the war. The Prince of Wales at that time (the future Edward VIII, who'd end up abdicating within a year of taking the throne in 1936) served in the Grenadier Guards, and despite being largely kept away from the fighting (to his sincere disgust, because he was conscious and ashamed of this special treatment), he took every opportunity to visit the trenches with or without permission on a messenger bicycle, spending Christmas 1915 at the front at Loos, and narrowly avoiding death at one point when a shell explosion killed the driver of his car. His brother Albert, who'd succeed him as the future George VI, did see naval combat as turret officer of HMS Collingwood at the Battle of Jutland.
This series is where they managed to really nail down the best use for every cast member: they'd already got Blackadder and Baldrick down to a tee, but it was pure genius to evolve Stephen Fry's Wellington from Blackadder III into General Melchett, bring back Tim McInnerny as the slimy Darling, and let Hugh Laurie go full Bertie Wooster as George. Tally ho, pip pip, and Bernard's your uncle!

That's because he is such a good actor. Rik Mayall himself stated that, with no disrespect to Rowan or any of the other cast members, but Tim McInnerney is the greatest amongst them. He actually said "The success of Blackadder can be summed up in four words: TIM MAC AND ERNIE"

It's interesting how the Blackadder's have slipped down the social pecking order over the centuries. At first he was a prince, then a courtier with close connections to the queen, then a prince's butler and now essentially a middle class career soldier.

Considering you're a fan of Game of Thrones KB, did you know that
Tim McInnerny (who plays Darling and Percy) was in Game of Thrones playing the character Robett Glover? He's obviously much older in Game of Thrones, but now that you've watched a few Blackadder's, you'd probably recognise him.

Itโs funny how Tim McInnerny originally left โBlackAdderโ because he didnโt just want to be known for playing Percy, yet when he came back for this, he was forever associated for playing Darling.

You will probably get people saying you should have watched the Christmas special first regardless, but there's no real need to at all; Blackadder as you've no doubt realised is very self contained.
