Love James corden. He’s funny and that’s all I know about out. Outside of the limelight, I don’t have a clue why he’s hated

My two cents, This guy is a nobody compared to James Corden. I loved this show, i even have it on DVD, but i had never heard about this guys pedo charge until you mentioned it. Where as everybody loves to hate James Corden because he's very well known as being a bell end.

Yeah I haven’t actually watched these seasons in many years with Chris Langham. I feel more okay watching it as a reaction cos the only person it really benefits is you directly and I enjoy it so I appreciate that.

I knew about Langhams history. I guess the difference is three fold. One, Corden is a far bigger star, with far bigger reach and so more people know about him to make more of a ubiquitous feeling of hatred towards him. Two, Corden is a bombastic person who played a similar character, and that elicits a more extremely polarising response than Langham's more understated playing straight. Three, Corden wrote and starred in G&S, and it was the success of that (imo fairly mediocre) show that made his ego so astronomical, so the hatred towards him is very much tied in with the show in that regard. Langham on the other hand is only in the first two series, and is just an actor, who had had a moderately successful career prior. While his faults are far more serious and egregious, they aren't linked in anyway to his involvement with this show, as far as I'm aware.
It's a bit like how I'll still happily watch some great movies that have Kevin Spacey in them. If he is the protagonist main character though I'd be a bit more on the fence, and if I knew he'd done some dodgy shit during production of the movie, then I'd refuse to watch it. When it comes to separating the art from the artist for me it all depends on how involved they are in the overall piece, how much of their crime is related to the piece, and how bad what they did is.
On another note, anyone having a meltdown over you doing G&S in the first place needs to grow up. I don't particularly like it either, but opinions should be formed, not inherited. You make your own mind up about Corden and the show, don't just take the hissing of the mob as gospel.

I didn't know tbh. The 'moral' hatred for Corden is tiresome, yeah it sounds like he has been a right nob ed at times, who cares/knows I'm sure he regrets it, I would still have a beer with him and judge for myself

Noncey Sinatra was caught in the middle of filming season 2 so Hugh is noticeably absent from the Christmas special and that coincided with actual political changes with Brown replacing Blair so,the show was able to have a shake up & go pervert free. I think on balance, I still hate James Corden more.

I think we can be a bit selective in the UK over who we cancel...but there's problematic actors and content in most older shows now. I think what's behind all these James Corden comments is actually that people get frustrated that you've yet to react to much better shows than Gavin and Stacey, but these things are all personal taste anyway. It would be impossible to get everyone to agree on the definitive best shows.

Racquetball was based on Squash, not sure why a new variant of Squash was needed, I'm not sure what the differences are but played Squash a lot as a kid, I remember in college teaching an American girl from Wisconsin how to play just because she was hot and I wanted to get into her pants, turns out she just wanted to learn Squash though, pfft! 🤣

Unfortunately it still pops up on the normal web with alarming regularity. Charities like IWF do a great job at getting it taken down very quickly from mainstream sites but as long as there are porn sites with user submitted videos and no ID checks the problem will continue. This is actually why Pornhub wiped about 10 million of its videos a few years back, it was infested with the stuff so they just decided it was best to delete everything from unverified accounts. Really horrible issue

Bit weird how Langham and Corden are being pitted against each other but here we are.
Langham did something illegal in the privacy of his own home, got caught, and paid the price.
Corden let fame go to his head and became an obnoxious, rude jerk to not only other beloved celebs but honest, hard working members of the public.
Is Langham's crime worse? Undoubtedly so. But Corden's antics made more headlines and gained more ire from people. Langham had a few articles reporting his actions over the course of a few months and that was it, the news moved on and people either forgot or just didn't notice in the first place.
So while the answer to your initial question is due to media perception, it does invite a discussion of separating art from artist, as others have mentioned. Should all the great films that featured Kevin Spacey be erased from history? 'The Thick of It' is still seen as a classic but 'People Like Us' (which starred Langham) has been all but forgotten at this point.
And is it right that certain other crimes are 'forgiven' once the perpetrators have served their time? I admit I was aware of Langham's past and didn't bring it up in the comments earlier (although for the record I didn't complain about Corden either), but in the same vein I wouldn't burst in on someone enjoying a movie or song and shout "Hey, you know that guy beat his wife/denied the holocaust/killed a guy/sexually assaulted someone, right?"
I'd let them enjoy the content in the moment, find out themselves later and make their own decisions about retroactively changing how they felt about things.
Sorry, spent way too long writing way too much waffle but there it is. Normal lurking shall now resume.

Honestly if more people were aware of what Chris did, I think he would get ripped to shreds in the comments, but he's quite an obscure actor and he was convicted in 2007, almost 17 years ago. Where as Gavin and Stacey broadcast in may 2007, James was quite liked back then, but more recently he became more over the top and seen as fake, just someone annoying to hear about. people in recent memory and bigger in showbiz often take bias. Chris has done well to keep hidden.

I don’t think separating the art from the artist is about saying the art is more important. It’s just about separating it as two completely different subjects.
I get it though. I was in the middle of watching House of Cards when the news broke about Kevin Spacey and it made me not want to watch it any more.

I think it's just as simple as this - not many subscribers necessarily knew about Chris Langham's crimes. I certainly didn't until just now! It will make watching the remaining episodes a less comfortable experience to some degree. But I will watch them and laugh my nuts off all the same.
James Corden is a much better known celebrity and many of us have heard numerous stories about how he treats other human beings. He pretends to be jolly and engaging for the sake of his career but the real man is very unpleasant AT BEST
Tom
2024-09-12 20:48:55 +0000 UTC
It's up to people on a personal level whether they can accept what led to the creation of what they consume. There are indeed a lot of awful people in the entertainment industry, but are the people saying this is a reason in itself to hate (for example The Thick Of It due to Langham's involvement) also typing this from their iPhone which was made in buildings which need anti-suicide nets because the working conditions are so horrible? They can 'separate the art from the artist' when it's convenient.
Then again, I'm probably not going to be blasting any lostprophets songs any time soon, even if they do have some bangers.

No, there is no excuse for it, just as there is no excuse for the majority of crimes. It is appalling. But I don't believe sane, well-adjusted people do this: I think broken people do. It's not normal and there must be reasons why people do this stuff and commit plenty of other crimes, too. Yes the judge didn't accept his explanations, though his sentence was reduced to 6 months on appeal and the appeal judge said that his excuses were improbable but could not be completely dismissed. The more interesting question is whether we can still laugh at the shows he appeared in. Evidently, we can. At some level, we think of art as more important than the artist. Look at how many top musicians had underage groupies in the 60s and 70s. If we banned their music, there would be little left to listen to. It's a crazy old world.

2024-09-12 19:02:00 +0000 UTC
good start KB 😁 Corden hate is very popular and fashionable! He allegedly may well be rude and not treat people the best, but this is the same sadly for millions of other people in this world, what do people expect? If you have millions and live a privileged life, it stops them maybe not being the best human beings, .. I have never seen anything myself or met the guy, so I don't really understand the vitriol personally! Maybe its because he puts across in his media work a very jolly happy friendly persona and possibly away from the cameras is a very different person perhaps, I don't know!
The thick of it is now quite old, especially these first few series, I think in the UK Chris Langham has long been forgotten and was never a household name, like Jimmy Saville, or Rolf Harris, think a lot of people just won't be aware of him or his history. I just thought you would like to know and be interested in his background given you started this and how good the show is and as you say separate the art from the artist, he was superb in the thick of it alongside Peter Capaldi. On a completely separate note, if he got done for those offences now in the UK he probably would not get a custodial sentence! People often avoid jail, for those offence types especially if a first offence, it's a mad world aye!...

@Jeffrey44 you are definitely making excuses for a pedophile. That is 100% what you are doing.
“Corden’s crime” “feels worse”. Are you hearing the words you are saying? I suppose being a dick is a crime and comparable to a pedo.
Julian T
2024-09-12 18:42:44 +0000 UTC
He first claimed that he was receiving spam emails related to pedo sites(reported himself) and then claimed it was research for a character(the character wasn't a pedo and it was for a comedy) then he claimed that him being abused as a child led to him looking for those images but it was outright dismissed as being a legal defense by the judge.
He used his credit card to pay for child porn. There's quite literally no excuse for it. He should've stayed locked up for a lot longer than he did.
SnakeYikes
2024-09-12 18:40:25 +0000 UTC
Yes KB you got the Series episodes correct. Don't know why there were only 3 eps in the 1st 2 series. Maybe the writers/producers or main actors were involved elsewhere so there was a gap. Re. Chris Langham, he wasn't a really famous actor and in the public eye. This show started as more of a cult watch as well. Therefore the wider public don't really know who he is to generate widespread condemnation of his actions. Whereas Corden got really famous after G & S and was like 'shit in a field' he was everywhere. Some people who don't know him do go over the top in their dislike of him despite him being an annoying tit. My advice is ignore the haters, try not to keep talking about them and watch Gavin & Stacey for what it is. Separate the role from the real person.
Fordy7169
2024-09-12 18:35:29 +0000 UTC
The "research" was for a character that was a peeping tom, the cowriter stated that the character was not intended to be a pedo and that Langham had not mentioned anything related to "research" to him. The guy is just a pedo, he literally paid for child porn.

I mean by all accounts Corden not a nice guy and I get why people dont like him, but take for example Clarkson who's very popular with KB viewers, he was fired from Top Gear because he physically punched someone for not getting him hot food. Obviously being violent to a colleague is worse than anything Cordon has done as far as I'm aware but he gets nothing but love. I feel like people just have different standards based on how much they personally find the content entertaining, you know? This isn't meant to be a Diss on Clarkson fans, just something KBs speech made me think about.

Well said KB at the beginning of this video. Sadly, wherever many comments are made online about anything, you're liable to get some aggressive and upsetting comments , often on even the gentlest of comments. Even checking the hashtag on Twitter/X for UK gameshows like Tipping Point and The Chase can often feature cruel OTT comments about the contestants.

I think Chris Langham's crime has a simple and understandable motive, sexual gratification, something that we all hope to experience one day.
On the other hand, although Corden's crime isn't as serious it also isn't something that people can relate to so feels worse in comparison. No one really knows what motivates Corden to continue to do what he does.
In case it isn't obvious, I'm not here to make excuses for either man and let me make it very clear, I find Corden to be a big fat sack of shit.
Jeffrey44
2024-09-12 18:14:50 +0000 UTC
A complex issue. He claimed to have been led to download the material on a single occasion due to his alcoholism and his feelings of self-destruction he had lived with for years after being abused by a close friend of the family when he was a young boy. The problem with banning shows that feature immoral actors is that we'd probably not have many shows left! As to Corden: he's ok, but I see the huge annoyance with him, but this isn't a reason for muppets to cancel their sub! Silly muppets!

I was aware it had happened, and I was also aware that he said he was doing research for his autobiography; he states he was molested as a child and he was doing research. How believable that is is naturally debatable. So you make a decision do you enjoy the show with everyone else's performance as well or do you just dump the show, let's face it by us watching your reactions he's not making any money is he, not from Pateron.

I had no idea about Christopher Langham. Admittedly, I have not watched The Thick of It as religiously as many people here but yeah, that's fucked and it's a shame that he is associated with such a good show. They say judge the art and not the artist, but fuck that PoS.

Wow, what a PoS, I must admit I didn't know myself until you said KB. Details of it are awful. And to this point I'd kind of found his Hugh character the funniest and most likeable as well, especially in episode 2. Difficult to laugh any more, I can't really separate the character from the real person that well, so kinda ruins the rest of this season for me. Hopefully he clears off after S1 and we can just forget about him.

Langham wasn’t that famous, the show was still bubbling under the radar, the conviction happened between seasons and the media did a pretty efficient job of ‘this guy is an arsehole, let us never give him publicity again’. In that spirit, I doubt anyone here would begrudge you skipping the rest of this season and moving straight onto S3. Rebecca Front (of The Day Today fame) is an inspired replacement.
Edit: I’m in no way excusing or minimising what he did, I’m just saying there’s a few reasons that fewer people will have an opinion on this than James Corden
