Sadly you may miss some of the jokes, the one about dating the boss from Harrods, refers to Muhammed al Fayed, he palmed him off to his son (Dodi Al Fayed) he was Princess Diana's boyfriend who died with her in the car crash in Paris. Hence she hasn't heard from him in a while.

G&S is AMAZING, British comedy is a wide spectrum, the 'drama' aspect makes it brilliant, you find yourself emotional and laughing your arse off too. I hope Boomer sticks with it, constant laughs is boring anyway, you need set up, emotion, drama... even Peep Show, Inbetweeners, the Office etc share this but obviously slightly less

You'll Love Gavins Parents Mick and Pam. Pam is your typical Essex wife, nice women but very over dramatic about everything and Mick is the sensible straight talking one and I consider him to be The Hero of the group in this show because he always has a good answer for everything.

Yes Royle Family is one of my faves I’ve never recommended it to KB because it’s not laugh out loud much, but neither is G&S so if he likes this he will probably like Royle Family too!

Yeah bits of it are dark made darker by Shane Meadows ability to convey things in such an impactful way. But it has a bit of everything. For me it's very authentic in capturing the feel in this country in the 80s

Gavin & Stacey isn't one of my favourites, but it's a cult classic uk show, that you 'had' to watch at some point, then you also held a poll where it wasn't just popular, it was THE most voted for

Thats unfortunate to hear, I think all the dumbfucks who are crying need to shut the fuck up and find something better todo with their day but Clarksons farm is genuinely a great show and I think you would love it. It's also a show that doesn't get many reactions and I have been hoping you'd do it eventually.

There’s a difference between the man and the character. Corden the man is, by all accounts a complete knob. Smithy the character is great. Michael Jackson is the king of pop. Not the best choice to babysit your kids (allegedly)

Your comments re. Luther & Sherlock made me think of 'This is England' so I've just finished your 'This is England' movie reaction and would love to see you get to the TV series at some point!
Not necessarily anytime soon as I personally love coming to this channel for a laugh, but there's without question tons of great dramas you could react to:
Black Mirror
Broadchurch
Hustle
Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes
Line of duty
Luther
Peaky Blinders
SAS: Rogue Heroes
Sherlock
The north water
This is England '86, '88, '90

2024-09-05 13:03:27 +0000 UTC
I can support Luther also Happy Valley as I think Comedy TV series and Gangster movies are great but man can't live by comedy and organised crime alone so I'm all for mixing it up. That said, unlike others I don't hate James Cordon, I am able to separate the art from the personality but the main issue for me with Gavin and Stacey is that it overstayed its welcome by around 5 seasons and the thought of having great shows like Brassic, Cuckoo, Home, Mum and others cockblocked by 70 odd episodes of this for the next year or so is a worry.

Gavin and Stacey is good fun, there are making a new Christmas special right now and the fans are going mental, Gavin’s mum is amazing she’s off her head I can relate to her 😂 . Exactly , I think fresh meat is pretty mediocre so I just don’t watch I’m not going to moan about it. Humour is in the ear of the beholder people 😂. Luther is very good, Happy Valley is even better 😀. In the uk we call people like that security bloke a JOBSWORTH 😂

Fun Fact
Some of the main families have surnames that are named after British serial killers.
Gavins are the Shipman’s (Harold Shipman)
Stacy’s are the Wests (Fred & Rose West)
Then Dawn & Pete Sutcliffe (Peter Sutcliffe)
I’m sure it’s already been mentioned but I’m not reading all the comments 🤣

The joke where nessa said I called him on his boat and said "back off" was an apparent reference to the owner of the big London shop Harrods, the billionaire Muhammad Al-fayed, thats why she said "the big boss like". And then she referred to his son but I don't know anything about him, though he might have dated princess Diana once I'm not sure.

That episode ending was so over the top that it lost a lot of its comedy value imo. It didn't add up and wasn't even close to realistic. It could be said that already Gavin and Stacey has Jumped the Shark

Gavin's mum is played by the brilliant actress Alison Steadman. She's been in many different things throughout a long career. Possibly best known for the great comedy drama Abigail's Party, directed by her ex husband Mike Leigh, a master of awkward British family relationship comedies

Luther is great. So is line of duty. Regarding Gavin and Stacey there are alot of UK references in this show so there are like hidden jems of comedy for a UK audience. Just like in the quiz they reference alot of UK serial killers. Also the part where ness mentioned the son she dated, she is talking about the guy that is the son of the owner of Harrods that died with princess Diana in that crash. That's why she said she never heard from him again. I think you didn't get that judging by your reaction. But keep watching there are somw really funny moments in this show

KB, ignore the comments just get on with watching the feckin show and make your own mind up. It is a comedy/drama leaning to the realistic situations (except for Nessa's fantasy stories). Ruth Jones, the co-writer plays Nessa. The premise of the show is what happens to a couple's families, friends and work-life when they get involved in a relationship.

I'm not an expert on what makes great comedy, but I think both Gavin & Stacey and Spaced are the type of British comedy that doesn't rely on constant one liners to get laughs (although I do think Spaced has more laugh out loud moments). The humour is built on characters' mannerisms and situations which can be subtle and relatable, and doesn't always appeal to people who just want a laugh a minute. I think that's why there's generally a few people saying these kinds of shows are not funny, because it's simply not how they want their comedy. It's all subjective I guess. Just my two penneth.
Jay
2024-09-04 18:46:56 +0000 UTC
KB, I hope you continue just simply because you will appreciate more and more the subtleties. Nonetheless, the James Corden hate is real, and it blinds people to this being a decent show. I used to loathe the guy (without doing any research, and not that I know him at all) just for how he has treated serving staff. If it helps anyone see a different perspective, I just read Jimmy Carr’s book, and he went out his way to say that Corden was the only person who called him to see how he was after he was publically shamed for tax avoidance. He called him every day for weeks. It got me thinking that maybe he’s a privately great guy who has been a massive tit many times. I know If I was judged for the most arrogant, awful, and obnoxious things I’d ever said, I wouldn’t be married for a start 😂😂

Ooh also I realise not knowing all the british celebrities you might not have noticed but the running joke with Nessa is despite her small-town appearance that she's been involved in some way with almost all of them and had every kind of important job, but you never see any evidence of that other than the stories she and other characters casually mention. It's not even like a Jay thing where she's a liar, other characters will back it up.

Both Gavin and Stacey’s families surnames are the same as famous British serial killers as are their friends that were arguing in this
Stacey West (named after Fred and Rose West)
Gavin Shipman (named after Harold Shipman)
Dawn and Peter Sutcliffe (Peter Sutcliffe was the Yorkshire Ripper - different from Jack)
So you know some more now. It couldn’t be Jack the Ripper as nobody knows who he was (he might have been born in Leicester but nobody knows). The joke there was that the answer to every question had the answer Gary Lineker and he’s famously from Leicester
