Spaced S1 Ep1 "Beginnings" REACTION!

I have been wanting to react to this show for a long time. This feels just like the Cornetto films.

Spaced S1 Ep1 "Beginnings" REACTION!

Comments

I'm a bit late to the party here. As much as I like Spaced, like all the other nineties housemate sitcoms (Men Behaving Badly, Game On) it's a period piece and the pre-gentrification world it depicts is gone now, or at least wouldn't be in the least bit attainable for these characters now; truth be told it had probably already begun to disappear by the time Spaced aired. So for that reason it became a more difficult and actually rather sad watch for me as a post-recession adult living in the London area and seeing how good the people who came before me had it. But I'm probably thinking about it too much. It's still very funny.

Charlie

You’re correct. I’m talking out of my arse. He posted about it on instagram a couple of weeks back and I remember thinking “Wow that’s incredibly young”! So when I came back to thinking about it my brain performed a Jedi mind trick on me. He was 24 though. Still young but those 6 years are quite important at that age. Apologies for the bullshit 🤣

Paul Cole

He definitely wasn't that young when he did Spaced

DS292

Edgar Wright was 18 when they gave him the job of directing this. Incredibly talented. The lady that plays Marsha, also plays Jill in I’m Alan Partridge. She of the chocolate mousse sexual activity.

Paul Cole

same just joined for spaced and have a hell of a ride for red dwarf as well lol hoping he will do JAM as well.

Demceez

Mark heap in everything I ever seen him in, always plays a fantastic weirdo xD friday night dinner, spaced and JAM. Amazing actor

Demceez

Hey, Boomer, didn't you see the giant credits (Directed by Edgar Wright)? 😵‍💫

Bruce Bowden

lmao

alexmiller

Yes. Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright are the core forces for both Spaced and the cornetto triogy of films. In fact they have said before that the cornetto trilogy of films partly came into being because there where ideas and comedy themes that existed in Spaced that they wanted to explore in some more detail. To the point that you'll find some episodes of Spaced contain very similar jokes to those used in the films.

Yuri Huffles

I'm a huge fan of Spaced. I've just joined Patreon this moment in order to be able to watch when you upload them. Was happy to see you already had two waiting for me to watch. <3

Yuri Huffles

Fantastic! its such a good show, every episode is like a mini film. long time youtube watcher, Subbed for this, love to you and your fam dude x

psybur

My current basic university accommodation is £163 per week. Also, it is Edgar Wright who did all the films.

Grady Parsons

Don't get Covid!

Daniel Heywood

Well said, John 👍

Dannythedoodle

the guy on the phone with daisy boss hog was one of the staff at the hotel alan partridge lived in

Doug

Really glad your watching this, it's been ages since I have watched it and it's great to see it for a second time

452b

I for one am glad boomer doesn’t act like a pair of eyes to rent. It’s more genuine when any reactor plays some part in what they choose to watch.

John

Immigration isn’t the cause. It’s a deflection from the cause. That’s the objective truth.

John

Not only was he staring us in the face, but Edgar Wright was also laying 'Spaced' out on the sofa in Daisy's former flat

Thomas Woodward

This show was seminal. Lots of shows have tried to ape it since but have come nowhere near.

Neal Murdoch

Excellent! So looking forward to rewatching all of these.

Helen Francis

*works equally well with him. You would never know I grew up watching Blackadder, it has had absolutely no bearing on my own comedy values whatsoever. Wibble

Dan the man

I saw this and thought he was talking about James Corden

Brian Moran

I’d rather be stapled to the floor with croquet hoops and then mercilessly tea-bagged by a gang of rabid skunks than watch anything with or written by Simon Pegg.

Dan the man

Jim will be DELETED when you see him play Dr. Statham in GREEN WING.

Matthew Mosley

Grr!

Matthew Mosley

Ah another show I haven’t seen. Looking forward to it, I love Simon Pegg. Hope we manage to see Mark Heap again in Green Wing.

Julian T

I won't say too much but one of the episodes is always cited as being the initial inspiration for Shaun of the Dead, you'll know it instantly when you see it! And Yurp same director!

Mark Jones

I was 19 when Spaced came out and I don't think I'd ever been (or have since) so excited about the next epidode aired on TV. It's SOOO good and only gets better, ay?!

Dannythedoodle

Good choice, it's one of those classic shows you 'had' to watch at some point! I also don't think people can complain when you choose these shows that only have 6,12,14,18 episodes, as it gives you and the channel a bit more variety... Enjoy!

ryung246

Edgar Wright did also do Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs the world, if you haven't seen either of them.

Joe Thornhill

Simon Pegg. No thanks

Dan the man

There’s a LOT of detail in these episodes- really small things you’ll miss the first time watching. I know because I’ve seen this series many times and I’m still finding stuff. If you liked the first episode you’ll love the rest. Also gives me faith you’ll understand some of the stranger comedies the UK produces.

jon d

Marsha the landlady was in all 3 Cornetto films so that's why you recognise her, she was also Jill who ate chocolate mousse off Alan in I'm Alan Partridge. Daisy was also the head of the other group of survivors in Shaun of the Dead who saved them at the end.

Mark Jones

I went to college in 1988, my rent including all bills was £18 a week! I'm the same age as Simon Pegg and this series is so close to real life at the time in many ways, which is one reason I love it so much! Also to put in into context, I bought my first flat the year Spaced came out in 1999, it was a bedsit on the top floor of a Georgian townhouse on Hove seafront which is a very sought after area with very high property prices, but in 1999 my flat was a mere £49k! Then you crazy Americans ruined it all when some of your banks collapsed after giving everyone huge mortgages they couldn't afford which caught on in the UK too with Northern Rock doing the same, and when it all collapsed all property prices went through the roof and they never come back down, just continued getting higher and higher and higher! Lol end of rant! 🤣

Mark Jones

OMG.... OMG.... FINALYY!!!!!!!!!! Seriously I could kiss you Boomer, this is going to be a trip!!!!!

Mark Jones

Finally!

Stian Lundgren

It's great that you're loving it so far, because the first couple of episodes are the weakest. So you're in for a treat moving forward!

Jay

A month. £90 per week

Chris

Resubbed for this. I was one of those hounding you.

Chris

OK - so, I was worried about this... but it seems I need not have been. Very relieved that KB is on board. I have a HUGE stake in this in that this show was everything to me for about 3 years back in my early 20s - I was active on the fan forum at the time and I went to the conventions that were organised, met most of the cast, and, well - it was a special time in my life. Feeling like an outsider, and meeting other fellow outsiders was formative for me. But, these things aren't to last - the show ended and I lost touch with most of those people I made friends with then. I wonder what they're doing now... Anyway - delighted you seem to get this so far KB - I honestly thought you wouldn't - but if you're this on board already, you're in for a treat. :)

Phil Robinson

Yeah it's just a coincidence that the house prices started rising massively exactly as Blair opened the floodgates in the 90s and we've had a massive house shortage since... It also has nothing to do with importing the amount of people to fill 2 massive cities each year lol... Of course they don't need houses, they magically assimilate into the ether!... Imagine if you had to build 2 cities in the UK each year that were each the size of Coventry with all the infustructure needed with it!... Do you think that would be possible?... In fact I'll answer that... No it would not be impossible so I'm not sure why smooth brains think it's possible to fit that many people into the country each year and that it has no impact on the ever rising house shortage and house building targets lol... Adding 15 million plus people to this tiny island over the last 50 years or so has made no difference to the homes needed haha and the predicted 15 million more in the next few decades will not make a difference to the infustructure stress or the housing crisis at all 🤔

BigChanChan

Much better this than Gavin and Stacey. You can stick that where the shun don't sign

Yaapsdad

Good choice. Been years since I've seen this.

Yaapsdad

I hated this show on another reaction channel but it was hyped for months beforehand by a section of the membership so maybe my expectations were too high, especially as it's full of my favourite actors!... I might give it another go though.

BigChanChan

knowing what I know absolute no they arent! ok ... plenty of people have requested this the whole time on patreon too so that did work

Craig McCulloch

Yeah, it's not because of 14 years of tory rule, a financial crash or Brexit, of course it's immigrants.

Dubsox

Man, this show really makes me nostalgic for the late 90's.

Dubsox

£415 a month 2 up 2 down house rented by myself privately in County Durham (ish)

Craig McCulloch

The land lady played Alan Partridge's Gf for that one time date that ended in chocolate moose pervyness. Dark Place Next 🤞

bdazzer85

I literally have a hand-made 'Norfolk Owl Sanctuary' coaster sitting next to me. It's double sided with an unflattering pic of AP at work on the flip side. Made by myself. I don't get out much. 🦉

Jason Scade

I read that Ed Wright's distinctive cuts in between scenes is inspired by Star Wars

kev

Yesssssssss!

Dan Smith

I had sex several times with my last gf before we first kissed.. Nothing special about that. ;)

Ola Hammarström

Omg this is amazing, Blackadder 3 & 4, Alan Partridge and now Spaced, Awesome 👍👍👍

Duncan

I'm thrilled you enjoyed the first episode so much, I always found it to be lightest on laughs due to the sheer amount of character introductions and exposition (albeit masterfully handled by Wright's rapid fire kinetic editing). So it's going to get even better! :) By the way, if you end up loving the show as much as its fans, I'd recommend picking up the special edition DVDs, one of their features is a "Homage-O-Meter" subtitle track that fills you in on all the pop culture references you may have missed (there's...a LOT)!

David Lyons

LOL, even when they are in word form

Fordy7169

KB, there were 2 people who were in I'm Alan Partridge. The nerdy boyfriend on the phone who looked like Inbetweeners' Will was Ben (James Lance) the hotel staffer and the landlady in this was Jill (Julia Deakin) the woman Alan had the chocolate mousse episode with.

Fordy7169

Oi oi be lucky……..

Richard A

Good choice Brian! I'm all in!

Jason Bonner

I’m the worst with names you know this lol.

Brian Moran

FFS KB the director's name was literally staring you in the face on the end credits EDGAR WRIGHT you muppet.

Fordy7169

Great reaction, hilarious show. Loved 'The Shining' reference. 8:40 When they both break down in tears (over house-hunting) and Simon Pegg's crying-man noises. 🤣🤣🤣 ♥

Jason Scade

Think Alan Partridge and chocolate…. Owls …. I never liked this when it was first broadcast but enjoying it now, cheers

MarkC

And he took her to a cracking owl sanctuary

Alex P

Oh my, I am super stoked! :D I was one of those passionate Spaced fans who recommended (bugged you about) it often in comments. Press play! ♥

Jason Scade

I've never watched this series before, but I'm loving it. Very quirky!

Mark Wootton

Same here, Halifax?

Chris H

Glad your doing spaced...like plebs it's 1 I've largely missed

Paul Liversage

It has to be chocolate digestives in tea, plain just don't cut it.

Rebecca Musson

Rental prices in the UK wouldn't be much more than that now if we didn't have a mass immigration problem since 2006.

Dave Jones

Voted for this in the poll. Right up your street and one of my all-time favourites 🥰 Got a feeling you're gonna have to get QB in for a re-watch of this ep so we can watch it all together 🙂

Dannythedoodle

The director of the show was staring you right in the face on the end credits, but you were too into what was happening XD

Wilss

Quality choice

Neil Tristram

Yay! So excited ☺️

Rebecca Musson

It's great. Have you never liked it?

Jason Scade

Heaps of talent. 👍👍

Jason Scade

Yes!!!!!!

Duncan Hart

Demented. 🍫

Jason Scade

the London stoner Seinfeld including Kramer character

emu cat

Yup. My brother's house is twice as big and has three kids, yet I pay double him for lecky

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Mark Heap will be easier to recognise in Green Wing as there's not a huge leap between that character and Jim from FND.

Z is for Zed

Yikes thats fookin steep

James Ellison

FUCK YES. I've been meaning to suggest this for ages. Also this is defo a series that QB should join in on! I think she would enjoy it as fuck. You should rewatch ep1 with her

Josh Jameson

There’s some subtle jokes you seemed to miss, or maybe not, and this is why all these shows are worth a rewatch

Kieran B

Great pick, very nice surprise indeed

James Ellison

Awesome reaction! Two of those actors were in I’m Alan Partridge - Marsha was Jill (Alan’s employee and owl sanctuary one night stand) and Daisy’s boyfriend was Ben (staff member at the travel tavern)

Eleanor Elliott

Waiting for you to recognise 2 faces from I’m Alan Partridge S1… 32:29 update: getting closer on one, surprising you’ve not recognised that one as they’re playing the character in a very similar way to in IAP

Kieran B

I had 450 20 years ago. It was possible!

Jamie

I got 2 more new shows I reacted to that are going to drop this week so don’t fret.

Brian Moran

There's one of McVities large manufacturing plants about 2 miles away from where I live. McVities make amongst other biscuits, the digestives

Yaapsdad

I would kill for that rent dude. Mine is about 8 times that right now.

Brian Moran

spaced is great excited for this pick good one KB!

Dave L

Yes Edgar Wright directed the Cornetto Trilogy

Kieran B

You may remember the actress who plays the landlady in bed with Alan Partridge and some chocolate mousse..

Simon Graham-Smith

In the UK we use the normal digestives to make the base of cheesecake (I think you guys normally use graham crackers?). If you or Queen Boomer ever make a cheesecake give it a try with digestives.

electricduckpond

Thank you for reacting to this KB. One of my all time favourite comedies!

Jay

My rent is 395 right now, and it's an apartment by a beach, in the Scottish Highlands. The catch is, the size of the flat, and the energy rate. I'm paying over 100 a month just for electricity. It's still a pretty good deal though. I'm on a main street, so I have fast food takeaways, restaurants, ice scream shops, a dentist and doctor's all within a 5 minute walk. As well as the beach. Another downside is the tourists, and the noise.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Ok I admit I’m in wrong, didn’t realise

Harry

Excellent series 👏

Rob webber

Oh, you little beauty!

Neal Murdoch

£360 a week in London. Good god

James Aston

Harry what did I say in the beginning of the video? Lol.

Brian Moran

Amazing choice.

Adam McLaughlan

KB's about the right age to get a lot of the cultural references, this should work.

Z is for Zed

Or no, spaced Is awful

Michael Oliver

Fantastic choice!

Ged Fazakerley

This is some of Mark Heaps best acting, he's so good.

David Williams

Such a great series, so many great film homage's & easter eggs hidden throughout! You can see the seeds of how the Cornetto Trilogy came to be!... Wright, Pegg, Park!

carrot

Brilliant, I love Spaced!

Nidge

It's not a democracy, Harry, welcome to the real world.

Jamie

omfg yes mate.

Nothinghalo

Finally you will love this. My favourite series along with peep show! Top man king 💪

Daniel Monney

You absolute legend, great series

Chris H

So the polls are pointless?

Harry

Woohoo finally!!!!!

Luke Dyson

Yes you dancer!

Kieran B

Finally!

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Nice choice KB! It's so well done you will love it!

Richard Stokes

YES! My vote! I win! suck it! :)
