The news segment of this episode was gold!

Blackadder S3 Ep1 "Dish and Dishonesty" REACTION!

You also need to watch Blackadder Christmas carol. Its an excellent Christmas special.

Gyle

"Minuscule".

Grady Parsons

It's not "the colonial era". It's the Regency, which was 5 February 1811 to 29 January 1820.

Grady Parsons

Of course you are.

Grady Parsons

It's too bad Americans don't know more about Napoleon since Americans were the ones actually responsible for the collapse pf the French monarchy. The intervention of France in the American War of Independence bankrupted the country, and it could no longer tend to the needs of the people and support the King's extravagant spending. The people revolted and, as happens in most revolutions, the military eventually took power.

Mr Jackpots

Just reading Simon's blog now, Katherine, it's fascinating - a great read. He was great in this episode, almost stole the show!

James Mulligan

A bit unfair Pitt the Younger, I think. If he was Boris he'd be one year away from spending several grand on buying himself a special Vandalism Suit

Martin Clarkson

Well after Series 1 being a bit of a failure and a MASSIVE expense, the show was going to get cancelled and the only way they avoided that was by promising to make the cheapest comedy imaginable. series 2 is good but the budget was absolutely miniscule. After that was a success, they were given a little more freedom and cash for the later series which allowed them to work on it without constantly keeping one eye on the cost.

Martin Clarkson

I'm friends with Simon Osborne, who played Pitt the Younger, and he said it was an enormous struggle to keep a straight face during filming. I think there are about 3 or 4 places where he is half a hair's breadth away from losing it completely! He filmed the role the week after he celebrated his 17th birthday. Vincent Hanna was a real-life news reporter and journalist who specialised in reporting on general elections, which is the reason why he was chosen. He died in 1997. If you want to read some 'Behind the Scenes' info on Simon Osborne's experiences on set, then his blog below is a trove of insight. Called 'History Hunger With Pitt The Younger'. https://historypitt.wordpress.com/home/

Katherine Birkett

This is my favourite series, and if I were to guess I think it will be yours too. I think it's due to hugh laurie bring at the heart of it. Watch out for a cameo from Queenie too!

Richard Stokes

Fun Fact: Mrs Miggins is Rowan Atkins wife in real life

Steve King

German yeah,...To keep the blood 'Royal' all of them are related to each other in Europe...

Daniel Heywood

I was thinking same

Shaun Priestley

This is where Blackadder becomes a really, really great show, rather than just a very good one. I don't know what happened between the end of S2 and the beginning of S3, but everything is hugely improved. It gets even better in S4, but enjoy this one for now, it's brilliant!

James Mulligan

Just an old friend from Uni - they were never together.

James Mulligan

Great season this, still not as good as 4 which is in my opinion some of the best tv ever. 4.3.2.1 is the order in my view

Chris

Danke

R Lawrence

ah great, love S3 and S4, Rowan got his facial expressions and one liners perfect in these series, the next one is a belter 👍

Duncan

You know more of our history than I do ha. Always make me laugh when Hugh Laurie went to the US, he became famous playing a serious character, yet over here he's well know for playing an idiot. Fantastic actor.

Adi Hughes

I actually quite enjoy season 1 and 2 just as much as the others

Tommy Carter

Your school must’ve been a right shit hole if you learned history off Blackadder. Seeing as it’s not factually correct.

Dan the man

Series 3 is arguably funnier, but for me Season 3 I like more. I like the cast more (Hugh Laurie is great, but Miranda Richardson, Tim McInnerney, and Stephen Fry are brilliant). I also love the opening episode of S2 so much, Rik Mayall is just a legend. It's a minor thing, but the Series 3 outro is also the weakest. One other thing that gives S2 the leg up for me, is that Blackadder's outfit is, as you said Boomer, fly as hell.

Relyx

No, she's no relation to him

Jessica Dalton-Morgan

Exactly the same for me.

Ash Jeffries

The Georges were part of the House of Hanover, as the houses follow the male line and so stop after a Queen is followed by one of her issue. So the House of Hanover ended with the death of Victoria and the new House takes its name from her husband Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which is why we had the House of Saxe-Coburg, which you’re right in saying was changed to Windsor to distance them from its German origins due to the world wars. It’s worth adding on the technically the House of Windsor should have ended upon the death of Elizabeth II, and we should now be in the House of Mountbatten/Battenberg, but the Elizabeth issues a decree that Windsor should continue after her death - something which irked her husband Philip who quipped that the only minor status in their marriage he had was his name, and now she was removing that right

Kevin Hussey

Of course the election results section is still how it’s done today (minus the accidental fatal injuries to returning officers). Get them all on stage and read out the results - and even the mad candidate is realistic (see Official Monster Raving Loony Party) As others have said the interviewer was actually a real life BBC political journalist and would be involved in election coverage

Kevin Hussey

Wonderful stuff. For me it's series 4, 3, 2 and 1 in order of preference. It just gets better and better. Looking forward to the next one.

Duncan Hart

I always thought most people had the order 4, 2, 3 and worst 1

Kiwi Tau

Ruckus is the word

Matthew Keating

Mrs Miggins was / is (?) Rowan Atkinsons wife in real life... I think.

Ryan Lynch

I prefer S2 to be honest... S4 is my favourite though.

BigChanChan

Rodney Trotter's Father In Law Dead.

DJGRAY1 Music And Comedy

Ah, I love series 3! My second favourite series (4 is amazing as you'll see!). The next episode, Ink and Incapability may be my favourite episode of all but it's difficult to compete with the final episode of series 4. It's so good though!

Ash Jeffries

Certainly the most underrated Blackadder series, and you can see the difference in style straight away as Curtis & Elton did away with the last vestiges of Shakespeare parody in the show and replaced it with a PG Wodehouse influence (the joke about Blackadder stealing the Prince's socks is straight from Wodehouse, as that's the exact reason why Bertie Wooster fired his last valet before Jeeves; that's on top of Blackadder's whole relationship with the Prince basically being a more manipulative, exploitative version of Jeeves's service to Wooster). Couple of familiar faces pop up in this one: Cassandra's dad from Only Fools (Denis Lill) as Sir Talbot Buxomley, the MP who dies, and the angry balding German from Fawlty Towers (Willy Bowman) is the middle of the three backbench MPs in frame when Pitt the Younger makes his speech in the Commons. And honestly, there's no point trying to pin any Blackadder series down to a specific year because there's always other stuff that contradicts it (like Pitt the Elder dying in this episode - which actually happened in 1778 - despite Pitt the Younger mentioning Napoleon, who didn't achieve prominence until the 1790s, and Prince George already being the Regent, which didn't happen until 1811). It's never about historical accuracy with Blackadder, always about the gags and the fun of them mocking a general era; in this case, a very broad and hazy late Georgian period. Just enjoy the ride!

Ian Richards

Pitt the younger, looking and acting like a young Boris Johnson

Yaapsdad

In order, seasons 3, 2, 4 then 1 then along way behind the first special, A Christmas Carol, and then the later time travelling special, which is, by comparison with the rest of Black adder, shit

Yaapsdad

Just gets beter and beter from here on in

Dango247

This is my favourite series (including Blackadder's Christmas Carol, which is a must watch KB if you're reading!). This was a really clever episode on numerous fronts. More goodness to come :) EDIT - And I love the end credits theme, Howard Goodall knocks it out of the park again.

Phil Robinson

I wonder if that’s how Pittsburgh got its name

Dave L

there are a few Blackadder specials I think and randomly also they did a episode in 2000 King Boomer for the millennium dome in London, where they played a Blackadder special episode for the millennium, probably about on YouTube

Dave L

“Take out the drawings for that beach hut at Brighton” - a blink and you’ll miss it reference to one of George IV’s enduring legacies, the Royal Pavilion

Eleanor Elliott

All the George's and their wives were German. The British Royal family changed its name from Sax-coberg (not right spelling) to Windsor to be more relatable to the people

R Lawrence

I haven’t watched this episode in ages , really enjoyed it of course

Erica

George IV was mocked by many who thought of him as foolish and sat around drinking and partying . He did design the Brighton Pavilion which cost £500,000 back then given to him by George III equivalent of £20 million today

John Rivenell

Wilx

Prince George had the role of 'Prince Regent' (1811) due the the mental illness of his father King George III. So he was de facto the reigning monarch until he became King George IV in 1820.

Fordy7169

4:11 Wow, great job with the history observation and the Pitt family being involved with Pennsylvania. I didn't know that. Apparently that's why Pittsburgh is called so. (Copy-pasted) ; Pittsburgh was named by General John Forbes in 1758, in honor of British statesman William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. The city was originally called Fort Duquesne by the French, in honor of Michel-Ange Duquesne, governor of New France. The British captured Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War (Seven Years War) and renamed it Pittsburgh in honor of William Pitt.

Jason Scade

Hope you're all feeling better soon! Awesome, series 3 is here already! :D Press play. When you've finished all of Blackadder (and perhaps the specials), a very funny Rowan Atkinson sit-com is 'The Thin Blue Line' (1995) which is set in a modern police station, it's a bit more pedestrian than Bladders was but I think you'd like it lots. Especially a dick-ish detective in it who doesn't care much for "fanny-ing about!". 😂 I liked the Netflix series 'Man vs. Bee' with Rowan too, it was a short show. Ten episodes but only 10 mins each, total playtime was 1hr 48m.

Jason Scade

The guy playing the "reporter" was in real life a famous political journalist and correspondent on TV at the time, Vincent Hannah. Sadly passed away now.

Kourga

There is a film called The Madness of King George. It would probably be of interest to you. The actor playing King George was brilliant in the film.

Martin Lee

Totally agree, Hugh Laurie as Prince Regent was the absolute best

Dan the man

This was the series that really got Blackadder going, legions of new fans, and probably the best era. So many great episodes to come and some legendary one liners.. “They do say, Mrs Miggins, that verbal insults hurt more than physical pain, something that I will now prove wrong when I stick this toasting fork in your head” being a favourite. (The irony being that it’s more than one line)

Dan the man

This reaction is scarily true to life talking to Kb and history coming up haha

Craig McCulloch

Ah I love this episode

Michael

The German thing is a smidge overplayed in this series; George III was actually immensely proud that he was the first of his family born in England, and calling him German would probably have been a good way to offend him. But you'll swiftly learn that as much as this is my favourite series of Blackadder, the attitudes and timeline is all over the place!

ALW

Getting into the best two series now!

Joshua

Regency era we would call it, but Colonial era is fine too.

ALW

My personal favourite series. Always loved the way that Vincent Hannah was speaking out of an open window, just an extra little gag to make the 'TV' stuff make sense.

ALW

Best series of Balckadder in my opinion, absolutely brilliant!
