Mid Morning Matters S1 Ep1 REACTION!

Comments

I love this show, the way it's filmed means that it relies heavily on the writing, which needs to be good enough to carry the show

bill purnell

I'd thought I'd add context here. While he did take a break from the character, the reason for the style was actually that the initial run was part of the "Foster's Funny" advertising campaign so they were just shorts that were produced to sell beer and initially exclusively available through Foster's website but were very much promoted. The new style was a concept that was suited for that with a low budget then they were re-edited and packaged (into the episodes KB watched) for Sky Atlantic. Vic and Bob also did a series of sketches with a shoestring budget for Foster's and you can tell, it looks like them just messing about with hardly any script and one camera but is still very funny. The only show that was part of that campaign that I can recall having a proper budget with high production standards was The Fast Show and I think I remember Charlie Higson saying they set clearer negotiating terms and said they wouldn't do it without a budget for a proper production team. The second series of MMM was just made for Sky.

RA Keogh

Side-kick Simon is one of the best straight men in comedy.

Bruce Bowden

They should show this to every wannabe radio presenter as a lesson on all the things you should never do on a radio show. Much better than a cold list of dos and don'ts. It really makes the point.

Bruce Bowden

been away from the internet for a bit but really pleased to come back to this Boom, been waiting for MMM!

Nathan

heyhey michael I love your animations and great to see you on here, also one of my fave partridges

Nathan

YES!

Nathan

haha same here

Nathan

I remember when I was in high school the clip of him saying 'This is great banter!' was a meme in the UK and people were constantly quoting it. Guess it was a different time when there wasn't 100 viral vids a minute lol. Checked and it's got 3 million YouTube views lol.

Rach

Light entertainment daytime British TV? This Time is obviously factual shoulder peak. You clearly haven't understood it at all.

💥 😂

Jason Scade

His voice breaking. 😂 Like it was Dunkirk. 😂

Jason Scade

Simples. 🍳

Jason Scade

I second this strongly! I think Boomer should watch the Witchfinder, a fairly recent sitcom set during the English Civil War which Key stars in (and was written and directed by the Gibbons brothers who also did Mid Morning Matters!)

daniel shears

His sidekick Simon is played by Tim Key, possibly one the most naturally funny men in British comedy. He reprises his character in This Time, which is a parody of light entertainment daytime British TV.

Ahh...but what lovely butter. Lightly salted.

Re-watch. 22:26 The soldier's rather warped sense of humor about people tripping up over other people they've just dispatched. 😅 It's his coping mechanism.

Jason Scade

This is the real renaissance of Alan Partridge. After years away, Coogan returned with new writers and Steve fell back in love with playing Alan. There followed the film obviously and the autobiography I Partridge, which is a great read. Then scissored isle and eventually his glorious return to BBC1

Neal Murdoch

Please, please don't react to Gavin and Stacy KB!! It's not funny at all. Actually do you know what it is?!! In the words of Alan Partridge.......... IT'S SAAAAAAAAD!!!! My top 3 from the choices on the recent poll would be 1) Fast Show 2) One foot in the grave 3) Mr Bean Seen a fee booms mention Ricky Gervais. My favourite show of his, has to be Afterlife. It's a truly unique show I think, had me crying (sad crying) with just how relatable to real life it was, but then ya flip it and the other side is just brilliant comedy. I got alot of laughs from that show myself. Just a suggestion if you've not watched it already bud. Another recent favourite of mine is Breeders, this show is perfect for you and QB as its focused on starting a family and all the craziness that comes with having kids!! I loved that show!!! Just a couple of suggestions there KB. I love my comedy so will just recommend those for now. If you want any pointers or shows t9 suggest, I am like a comedy encyclopedia, especially on british/irish comedy!!! So drop us a line anytime, if ya do ever want any suggestions or recommendations!!! Peace bro. YEET!!!

Fuck yes!!!!

Yes documents his career fall to obscure local radio presenter on a digital channel that doesn't even cover the whole of the county of Norfolk, only North Norfolk

Adrian Lelland

His first words '..compiling a database of Norwich's least grateful buskers' bang ! we're off !

emu cat

true, a bit like an extension of the openings of 'I am' , they were always gold.

emu cat

Hellll yes, Mid Morning Matters is one of my favourite Partridge series!

Michael Leighton's Karl Pilkington Animations

Tim key is fucking brilliant in this

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

MMM is probably the most quotable Partridge as there is so much dialogue that warrants several rewatches (Obviously not implying you do that KB) MMM alongside This Time, is, for me, the best Partridge yet. (Gun against my head my favourite is series 2 of This Time) The new format on both shows takes a short while to adjust to, but there are so many gags, reflections, and responses that can be missed on a first viewing. Coogan takes Alan to new levels in his performance of him.

Bryter

He has been one of Alex Horne's best friends since way before Taskmaster started so I guess he was giving so much feedback that Alex thought he deserved some official recognition, and financial remuneration! Key and Mark Watson developed a game called No More Women in 2002 and together with Alex Horne they went on to play the game regularly and filming snippets of it which can be found on YT, they played and continued to develop it while touring together on the comedy circuit, then during Covid they developed the idea further and started a YT channel together called 'No More Jockeys' where they played the game and it continued as a regular thing up until several months ago, and now they just make the occasional broadcast.

Mark Jones

Chronologically this comes after I'm Alan Partridge. Reason for the style of show is that Coogan semi paused the character after IAP as he essentially thought Partridge had became too mainstream. These shows were Alan's reintroduction to the public many years later (with the character having fully regressed to small time radio stalwart in the intervening years). They were released with no publicity and on v little budget - almost a secret to be uncovered by the partridge followers. Some of his best work imo - wonderfully subtle throughout with plenty of laugh out loud moments.

.MT

It grows on you, probably my favourite 'pure Partridge'

Mark Jephson

Reminds me of a filming of Howard Sterns radio shows.

Mouse

Yeah, man. He's the modern-day Peter Sellers.

Jason Scade

KB you were getting the timeline slightly mixed up, since you did 3 shows in reverse order. He started as a tv sports anchor, then had his own tv talk show, then lost his tv show and ended up as a nobody on local radio.

Julian T

He completed all the going backwards, so now going forwards again. I think he only skipped past one special.

Julian T

KB, just prepare yourself for the coversations and qustions that Princess Boomer will throw at you in the near future, just like the little girl does with Alan

MrPhil_K

So it IS Alex who's obsessed with rubber ducks?

Joe Thornhill

Wait, this was the 2010's??? I thought we were going backwards? You may have decided to go further back with 'The day today' but I thought you'd next be doing whatever came BEFORE KMKY and after TDT?

Joe Thornhill

MMM might be my fav Partridge, stripped back essence of Partridge.

emu cat

KB, I assume you also recognise 'Sidekick Simon' (Tim Key) from the Alpha Papa movie. He has some great asides/comments to Alan's muppetry, so you have to listen carefully to both of them as they attempt to riff their way through the show. After these episodes they then both appear on the TV series 'This Time'.

Fordy7169

This show is just extended versions of a web series Coogan did for Fosters lager, hence the lower budget. The longer versions were later released on Sky tv. Also Coogan’s writing partner Armando lannuchi left to do his own stuff (Veep) and the Gibbons brothers wrote this with Coogan. Also no laugh track and Partridge also looks a little younger or less makeup than series 2 of I’m Alan. So yeah it’s different than his previous stuff. Even though it’s just one location and a much lower budget it’s still another great Partridge show. It gets better as it goes and even more so with rewatches. The specials and the This Time series are more like the previous shows, especially Knowing Me Knowing You, with Alan both hosting a show again but also going to different locations, doing interviews etc.

James Ellison

The part where you made the over my head gesture, what it was was the cyclist guy's accent was northern Irish so Alan Partridge just randomly (probably because of hyperventilation) started talking about "the troubles" and the murals painted on houses from that time being like banksi's

R Lawrence

You're welcome Boomer. Yes my name is Wilss, how it looks. My surname is Wilson and people say Wilss for short. I added the extra 's' to the nickname when spelt coz people started calling me Wills, sounding like Wilz.

Wilss

Definitely a change in direction, and probably fewer LOL moments than in I'm Alan Partridge, but still really good and some of my favourite Partridge material. It being based entirely in the studio gives it a bit of a claustrophobic feel, almost as if you're trapped in the studio and being forced to listen to Alan's muppetry. Cringe comedy on a Peep Show scale!

AdamMcAdamface

😂😂 There’s so many subtle things Coogan does with this character, just the way he says certain words or little facial expressions. It really rewards repeat viewing. Coogan’s comedy timing is perfect.

James Ellison

Perfect partridge for me this, I’ve probably rewatched Mid Morning more than the rest and I’ve watched them all a lot. I’ve always found the parts of Alan Partridge when he’s at work the best part. His ocd with the clock, the way he deals with guests and his silly topics. Steve Coogan and Tim Key are so brilliant in this, especially as it’s just one tiny location. Just excellent writing and performances. So glad you’re reacting to this.

James Ellison

Excellent! Great reaction, very funny. Alan's stuff is different with each new show that he comes out with but you grow to love them quickly and they're always so re-watchable. Especially this Mid Morning Matters series. 5:50 "Hey! Ya cheeky tit!" 😂 He says it so camp. 24:25 Little girl asks is Bill Oddie dead? AP- "No!! Bill Oddie's alive and well, Sophie. Well, he's alive." 😂😂

Jason Scade

These are great 👍

Rob webber

I agree, it's far more subtle but also for me, far more refined... Some of the writing in this show is super clever in the way it delivers.

BigChanChan

I hope you are all feeling better soon and def for the hols - have a fab time! ♥ A-HAAAaaa!

Jason Scade

I think they had new writers for this, and also for the Alpha Papa movie. I think Mid Morning Matters originally had these videos in shorter segments. I can't remember how and where they were used.

South Coast Rich

I think that Mid Morning Matters was sponsored/funded by Fosters and then shown on Babycow's youtube channel (& I think Amazon!), which is the reason for the different shorter contained Radio studio format. There's some great partridge in these shows as it goes on!

carrot

I think Mid Morning Matters was originally released as 10min shorts on Facebook. It was later adapted into a show with episodes combined. Reason behind the low budget feel.

Jon

All the Partridge stuff from now on is a mock radio/ tv show or special, with the humour becoming more subtle. Alan’s incompetence when presenting is a large part of the humour

Jon

I much prefer Anglian Lives, Places of my Life and Scissored Isle to this show and This Time, you'll probably feel more at home with the style and setup of those shows. I'll give this series a second go though.

SP

He helps sometimes but he doesn’t come up with them all, that’s primarily Alex Horne and very much Alex’s concept, although Tim has been very involved since it was an Edinburgh show

Kieran B

He's a "Task Consultant". He's said it basically consists of sitting in the pub with Alex and just chatting shit. Seems like a nice job.

Domlaaa

Quick summary on Mid Morning Matters. It was originally a bunch of Youtube shorts for the 'Fosters comedy' channel, which was then collated into full episodes. It generally worked better as short skits, but it's still good in this format.

Jay

He also comes up with the tasks on Taskmaster, doesn't he?

Jay

Love it ! It"s AP on MMMONND !! 😂😂

South Coast Rich

Sorry to hear you're all under the weather. Especially baby boomer. Hope you're all feeling better for your vacation. :)

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Tim Key is Sidekick Simon - a brilliant "poet" and comedian. You should watch some of his stand up clips (although there aren't a lot on YT).

Domlaaa

I've waited a whole week for this!!!
