The Story of Only Fools and Horses Ep4 "Peckham and Beyond" REACTION!

Am I the only one who thinks this show would have done well as it was made in the US? Btw I am so glad they didn't mention the unaired pilot of the American remake because it is horrid lol.

I think part of the reason no network in the US picked up on OFAH was because it was so heavily established in British, and specifically London, culture. But I should point out that plenty of American comedies make references to things but no one over here in the UK would know, even something as big as The Simpsons. Most of the comedy is universal enough that we can just look past and ignore the bits that go over our heads. I also think a more general reason a lot of UK (and other overseas) shows struggled to make an impact in the states was because of the nature of US network television. Traditionally, one of your shows would be about 22 episodes long, give or take, and come out every year on a regular schedule like clockwork. Most TV in Britain isn't made that way and is therefore difficult to fit in the US schedule. Things could be considered to be changing though with streaming TV. The idea of shorter seasons with irregular production and release timing is becoming more normalised for you.

I think what gets missed these days is just how difficult US TV series were to understand. When I was a kid and we had three channels the BBC started buying older US sitcoms like MASH, Taxi, Soap and they showed later on TV after the 10 O'clock news when less people would watch but some of the accents were a little hard to grasp but we pushed on through and now the wide range of American accents are just like an extension to our regional accents. If you look at the Death Of Starlin, all the actors used their natural accent rather than trying to reproduce the correct accent and it works as if they all came from different parts of the same country.

At the end, when David Jason says you just have to say lovely jubbly to the brits to be accepted, They defiantly do! I've been on many a beach, when some beach traders who don't speak English would rock up yelling, del boy del boy, lovely jubbly, trying to flog sunglasses or watches etc

Gary Evans

With the recent Trump assassination attempt, it reminded me of the lines - "Omg is he dead?" "No but it was bloody close Rico!"

With regards to this airing in America, language barriers and so on, you must be right. There are a lot of weebs in the western world and probably even more who like amine in a normal, healthy (It's just a fun, often dumb, cartoon) kind of way.

I been watched only Fools for 40 years . Must of seen them all 50 times or more . Still laugh out loud at every joke 🤣. Iv loved watching you reacted to this..... Comedy GOLD Paul Whitehouse stage play is very good too carnt wait for his second production. Hope thay both get released on tv at some point

I didn't realize 'plonker' was so bad, either. After a lot of scrolling through Google, it seems to be more like 'Penis'.

I think the reason a lot of people didn't get on with miami episode was because it didn't have a laugh track in the background. And for alot of OFAH fans it was maybe abit too polished, it lacked that grotty London feel 😆

I think the remakes fail because American sitcoms are written to get as many adverts in as possible which is why it's often small meaningless jokes.

The whole beauty of British comedy is that usually it’s written by one or two people. The Office, Peep Show, IT Crowd, Father Ted etc are all written by maximum 2 people. And Only Fools is 1 man, John Sullivan. So they become arts by an auteur. In America, they have writers rooms of like 30 writers that get changed season to season - so it’s not an art by auteur, it’s a machine by committee meetings and writers rooms.

The reason they remake stuff is money, they pick stuff that’s already successful elsewhere because it’s easier than taking a chance on something new - the studios hope they have a hit on their hands they can milk until it’s not funny anymore and they can syndicate everywhere - it’s less about trying to put their mark on it 😁

Hey 👑💥ee, you may like the sitcom “Episodes”, written by the same team as Friends. It’s about a popular (fictional) British show being remade in the US and basically being changed to something completely unrecognisable. Starring Tamsin Greig & Matt LeBlanc

Gary Tamblyn

Even when you go abroad now, especially places like Turkey and Greece, the locals will often use phrases like "luvly jubly" when talking to an Englishman!

My uncle was a Captain in the merchant navy (and was in all his life), he never stopped being seasick. It just eased off into the voyage. I sailed the Channel with a former Royal Marine who was one of the most seasick aboard - we were just shy of hurricane level winds on that one though. I’m fine as long as I can see the horizon, and am outside, otherwise it gets me - but that’s only on fairly choppy water. Again after a few days I was fine, but like you the first whole day I was fine

Really enjoyed watching all these OFAH. In 2001 I worked in a bar next to a Only Fools and Horses bar. This was in Gran Canaria, from morning to night just re runs of the episodes. It was always full..

When Del is speaking French to what he thought was a French girl he said ‘no smoking, have you a Dubonnet’ followed by ‘I like, I love, on the bridge of Avignon’. Naturally the bit in the middle of that where he orders the two Dubonnets isn’t in French

Kieran B

If it was made in the US it would have been written by a huge writers room, not one writer, you would be less likely to get the same consistency and depth of *character* - the US comedy system is set up to produce gag after gag after gag, not story and character. There are as always exceptions to the rule on both sides of the Atlantic, however
