The Story of Only Fools and Horses Ep1 "Brothers In Arms" REACTION!

I hope you join me in watching this as I was very interested in hearing about how this show was made!
Of course Rock and Chips is inferior to OFAH, but most shows are. it can't be topped. ..But you should still watch it. 👍🏽

You can't even spell his Surname. Linehan. He's an a fucking oddball that's dedicated his life to persecute trans people. An odd choice for anyone. His wife left him, everyone left him apart from the quite extreme rights and KKK Rowling. I'm sure they have some salient points, clocks stopped etc, but fucking hell... Dedicating your entire life to bitching on a minority of people? What cunts.

He actively laughed at sexual assault in prisons and said teenagers deserve to die for disagreeing with him.

In other words, he lives in reality... how that's controversial I don't understand 🤔

Rock and chips is a bloody amazing drama prequel, it’s not like green green grass in that it’s not a sitcom and you get a better idea of the conditions the boys had to grow up with. It’s great honestly

I haven’t read all the comments so it may already have been said but I think it was a mistake to make them poor again. They should have left it after the millionaire episode and made some specials as boomer said , set in that lifestyle… same opportunities for the comedy but in higher circles, why not billionaires the new goal.. anyway it’s all done now.. lucky to have had what we did.

Yeh Gavin and Stacy is worth a watch. The storylines involving Corden’s character are hilarious. Rob Brydon is the highlight for me. Also a chance for KB to get some Welsh culture. He always says he loves the Welsh and I don’t think he’s watched a show set in Wales.

I do give a fuck, I was just acknowledging that I get why other people might not. You obviously feel strongly about Galton and Simpson - so do I, Hancock's Half Hour is one of the greatest things ever created - and me and other people here, on a video about John Sullivan's Only Fools and Horses, are praising his work. You are the one coming across as aggressive, there are no burning torches, mate! Galton and Simpson were very clear and honest in recognising their own influences.

I love Minder and remember my Dad letting me stay up to watch it when I was a kid but it is very hit and miss when you watch it back and certainly some of the casual -isms wouldn't play well nowadays.

I loved Minder as a kid, but I rewatched an episode recently for the first time in probably 30 years and even I have to say it's one of those shows which hasn't aged well, I changed channels. One show I think you'd freaking love because it's full of muppetry of the highest order is 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' which is simply superb, also Nicholas Lyndhurst was in another show which I rank very highly when he was quite young called 'Butterflies' which was my favourite show on TV at the time it was on, it's just brilliant.

Have you watched series 1- 8 of 'Steptoe and Son' plus the two films? No? Well then I suggest you should. This isn't a case of borrowing ideas or parallel stroylines, this is blatant plagiarism. As I said earlier, it adds up that every other sitcom Sullivan penned was utter crap. Genius my batty crease!
Rob Walters
2024-06-23 19:42:41 +0000 UTC
There are parallel storylines across many sitcoms. I noticed how Frasier borrowed many ideas from Seinfeld episodes in the later series, but no one says Frasier isn't a genius show. Borrowing ideas is one thing, but writing funny dialogue and characters and situations is another thing.

Gavin & Stacey is an interesting one. It was beloved when it released and continued to be a cult classic until the last couple of years, where there started to become this revisionist history stating that it was never good and was never liked by anyone. For me it's a watchable 3/5 show that's over-hated by people that don't like James cordon, and overrated by those that consider it in the best 3-5 UK comedies, but worth a watch none the less

Gavin and Stacey is great. Like you've said the comedy "edgelords" dismiss it because of Corden, and the fact that it's geared more towards heartwarming comedy as opposed to edgy cynical laddish comedy. I think it would be a perfect show for both KB and QB to react to.
Jay
2024-06-23 13:15:35 +0000 UTC
Yh I know that’s why I said (if you can) on my original post. I think I’ve got it on dvd somewhere and they’ve probably repeated occasionally, probably on GOLD, but no idea how KB would find it in America.
Would be good if he could do as it’s really interesting and more about ‘how it was made and came about’ rather than just showing highlights and the actors talking about parts of the show.

Yes Steptoe and Son is a classic. I like the one where Leonard Rossiter plays one of the 2 escaped convicts who break into Harold and Albert's house divide the house in 2. Great writing and acting in that one. Talking of Leonard Rossiter 'Rising Damp' was also one the best UK comedies I've ever seen, very underrated.

kb i love you but im going to have to go on a little rant here... the fact that you dont want to react to the green green grass because you are worried about it not being as good as only fools and horses.. no show is as good as only fools in my opinion but by that logic you wouldnt react to another british show.. because no show is as good? ya know? because its rated the best british show of all time, the green green grass is a GOOD show not perfect but worth watching (in my opinion), the green green grass isnt really a OFAH spinoff, its a completely different show but just has boycie in, also i have to mention gavin and stacey, you are missing out on such a great show, just because a few cry babies dont like james corden, yes he became abit of a dick but he said sorry for it, people act like he kicks kittens for a living, he plays a great role in gavin and stacey and i hope you get round to it :) you should react to what YOU want to react to, if you dont want to react to those 2 shows thats fine! anyway no hate.. i love you and queen and princess boomer! i just had to get that off my chest lmao keep up the good work ya muppet!!!

It's one of my favourite shows of all time but I just didn't have time to watch your reactions as you do so many I can only manage to keep up with about 3 of your shows at any one time, but I'm glad you seemed to have enjoyed it, I remember when as a teen I worked in my local Safeway and the real car from the show was on display in the shopping mall as it did a nationwide tour, the show was that big! Another older show which I rate as highly as OFAH is 'Porridge', I hope you get around to watching that one day as you'll definitely love it and that's my all time favourite show, after Jam of course, you HAVE to do Jam one day, I don't care how often you'll have to pause it!!!🤣

The Steptoe episode 'Full House'. Watch that then OFAH 'A Losing Streak'. The plot and storyline copies are sometimes blatant and sometimes subtle but always there. Harold falls in love with a stripper (Racquel), They think the abandoned baby is Jesus (Damien as the devil), Albert pretends he's been mugged rather than accept responsibility for breaking Harold's antiques even saying there were 6 of them (Albert getting beaten up by Knock Knock), Albert is being looked gor by Frankie Barrows gang and Barrow is little more than a midget but a Kray like figure (The Driscoll Brothers looking for Del) There are a million more if you watch Steptoe series.
Rob Walters

It's how comedy - and most forms of art/performance - works. Galton and Simpson were absolutely brilliant, although I rate Hancock's Half Hour well above Steptoe and Son (could say that it was the actual original London working class sitcom too, given that Tony's character only had aspirations of rising up into a higher class). The were open about being influenced by Will Hay, and Denis Norden and Frank Muir. Will Hay was influenced by W.C. Fields, Fields no doubt had his own influences. All of them produced work that was influenced but with their own nuances and life experiences colouring their output, as did John Sullivan. The Beatles were influenced by Dylan in the late '60's, but their output still sounded like The Beatles, even if they 'borrowed' some ideas. Apologies for waffling on, I agree with Wayne that nobody (else) probably gives two flying f's about this, and I'm sure that extends to my reply, I just couldn't help myself having read Rob's post!!

This 6-episode series you're watching now is quite recent. I think maybe only a few years old shown on UKTV channel GOLD. It was made after John Sullivan had sadly passed away.
There is another documentary about OFAH from shortly after the final episode in 2003. It's one episode and on for around 90 minutes. I think it's called 'The Story of Only Fools and Horses' as well but for me it is better than this one as we hear from John Sullivan a lot about his upbringing and how he got influenced for the characters and some of the plots for episodes. Maybe you might want to watch that episode (If you can) as well after you've watched this six-part series. There's definitely stuff in that episode that you'll find really interesting!

There are a lot of absolute classics, but I agree with your choice, Lee. @Rob Walters You're pretty much showing a level of naivety and ignorance on the whole subject Rob. It's kinda sad that you're objectifying every Trans person as "mentally ill", when they're just human beings trying to deal with gender dysphoria. What you're doing is lumping those "6ft, 28 Stone Brickies" in with people who generally go through difficult mental and physical transition. I think that's where the problem lies, when alot of people jump on the bandwagon of trying to portray themselves as "trans" by simply changing their pronouns and putting on a dress, which ironically does more harm to people who have to go through that difficult transition.

KB, to put the OFAH viewing figures in context the '85 Xmas special was watched by 31% of the approx. 55 million UK pop. equivalent to the USA, at the time, having 74 million watching 1 show. Yes all he said was, in his opinion, that maybe encouraging children/young adults to undergo sexual gender-change medication/puberty blockers and surgery was a bad idea for that person in the long run. He and others have since been vindicated by the official report submitted to the NHS by Dr. Hilary Cass in April just gone. So listening to him is not a problem. Can't watch this. Only a second in and it's all lies. John Sullivan did NOT come up with OFAH entirely on his own. These idiots hailing him a 'genius' and other accolades are entirely incorrect. Sullivan 'borrowed' (a nicer term than stole) many of his storyline, plots an jokes from what was the original London working class sitcom, and his personal favourite, 'Steptoe and Son' by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. The evidence is there for all to see. Galton and Simpson were the 'geniuses' not Sullivan. Anyone that thinks I'm chatting shit or just being an arsehole, then watch 'Steptoe and Son' from series 1 - 8 and you'll see I am right. Even in the first film of 'Steptoe and Son' (1972) there are examples... Harold falls for a stripper (so does Del), Harold and Albert think the abandoned baby in the stable is Jesus (Sullivan flips it so Rodney thinks Damien is the devil)... Sullivan admitted he had been 'influenced' by it and jokingly said he never knew of DVDs , Videos back then, and thought the episodes wouldn't be seen again. John Sullivan was a good writer, bit all this 'genius' bollocks, when he clearly took others' ideas is a bit much. The most obvious example is the Steptoe episode 'Full House'. Watch that and then watch the OFAH episode 'A Losing Streak' and prepare to be gutted if you're a Sullivan worshipper. Lastly, if he was such a genius as everyone claims, how comes most of his other written sitcoms were utter shit? 'Dear John' was crap, 'Just Good Friends' so boring it should be used as anaesthetic, 'Sitting Pretty' appalling and 'Citizen Smith' was simply a one joke piece that dragged on for 3 years.

You are actually placing a fake Twitter account that may post some uncomfortable truths and the fact J.K Rowling calls a man a'man' , high on a list of things to be worried about? You say Rowling states the 'truth' because she is a 'bitter, nasty woman' - that's insane. She says it because its true and the more acceptance of this mentally illness is forced on society then God help us all. How anyone can assert that a man can become a woman in every facet and chromosome is terrifying lunacy and the reason we are tolerating these Norman Bates weirdos is (don't laugh) to spare their feelings........ WHAT?!! Everyone has their feelings trodden on and no one has the right to go through life free from criticism, ridicule and mockery - especially not a 6 ft, 28 stone brickie who suddenly goes by the name Hetty Wainthropp.

I love that he said 'Minder' was the best show on ITV, maybe you'll get round to this one day but you should also try 'Porridge' or 'Rising Damp' both well written comedies from the same era as OFAH or something else by John Sullivan would be good too. Ignore what you've heard about Graham Linehan. He was absolutely right about what he said.
The truth doesn't care about people's feelings, nor should it. Unfortunately the mental mob are always the loudest and set out to ruin him. He's a normal guy that's concerned about the batshit way society is going and being normalised like we all should be.
Daryl
2024-06-22 19:46:41 +0000 UTC
For every good argument Linehan and Rowling make, they seem to push it to the point of bigotry, completely undermining their supposed intentions. For instance, amongst other things Linehan decided it would be a good idea to create false and derogatory twitter accounts under the guise of "comedy" trans women, to push his weirdly obsessive hate. As does Rowling, who seems to be adamant in calling every Trans woman a "man" for no other reason that to be a nasty bitter woman, as well as supporting extreme Transphobic groups.
Both have valid arguments to make, but when you push your arguments into basic bigotry, it does nothing but show hateful transphobia, which is nothing to admire or celebrate. I don't agree with any side that bullies another, especially the bullying both Linehan and Rowling have received, but I don't think it's a good thing to treat them as some kind of truth telling pariahs either. It's just a flip side of the negative toxic division over this whole topic.

Great stuff KB. If you enjoy this, would recommend "Monty Python: Almost the Truth", a 6 part documentary about their career that came out in 2009 that is as entertaining as a lot of what they did on screen.

I agree about the OFAH spin offs, but you should definitely check out Goodnight Sweetheart. I think that's right up your street.

It did get huge audiences but to put it into context we only had 4 TV channels back then, so there weren't a lot of options.

Rock and chips is more of a story than a comedy. I really enjoyed it it’s definitely worth watching.

Have you heard Graham Linehan speak though, he's no hater, give him a chance. idk, maybe you want to see women's sports taken over or ok with a woman with a big hairy cock changing in the pool by your daughter. Pretty reasonable takes if you ask me, which nobody is, lol.

Great reaction, KB! This is a fantastic 6 part documentary.
I wouldn't bother with The Green, Green Grass as it's four series and really lacklustre in my opinion. However, Rock and Chips is well worth watching. It's first and foremost a drama with a few funny bits, but it provides a bit of historical context to Only Fools and Horses where The Green Green Grass is just a disappointing spin off with barely any connection to the original show after the first episode.

I personally think that the documentary just gave us a preview of the next series to react to. So as suggested the next reaction should be Minder!

Rock and Chips gives a fantastic origin and you learn how Del Boy become the man he is. It's makes Only Fools and horses better. It's Comedicaly different but so well written. The Green Green Grass is alright, but it's extremely different, you may not like it.

Graham Linehan often talks uncomfortable truths/facts, (riling many activists and extremists on Twitter/X who peddle nonsense as facts, especially re gender and sexuality at the moment.). As a result he now suffers from abuse and intimidation on social media and elsewhere. Very similar to what has happened to JK Rowling , and also the former British swimming olympic medals winner, Sharron Davies. None of their harrassers seemed to consider the situation of vulnerable children and teenagers in the debate or the welfare and fairness of and for biological females. All three of them give as good as they get on Twitter though. Graham and JK like many creative people in the arts are socialist in attitude, but they seem to have switched their focus to defending themselves and pointing out scientific facts etc, not particularly pleasing SOME of their fellow socialist peers.
Don't know if you're aware, but Nicholas Lyndhurst and his wife's son tragically died about 15 years ago. Their son was only in his late teens I think. It seems that Nick then dropped out of the pubic eye until only a few years ago, when he was in a U.S. drama or comedy drama. Btw, I'm doing this from mermory so I apologise for any errors with estimated dates, ages re that sad event etc.

Would be gutted if you didn’t do at least rock and chips though ngl 😂
And green green grass would be nice but I get why it would seem like a big commitment

Green Green Grass is understandable because it's 32 episodes and a bit of a commitment (plus I don't think it's very good). But Rock and Chips is only three episodes.

I agree... Open All Hours is the only other show that features David Jason that comes close to Only Fools And Horses for me... In fact, Open All Hours is as enjoyable and funny for me too but I'm not sure if it would be KBs bag.
