Rik Mayall!!! I think? lol.

Blackadder S1 Ep6 "The Black Seal" REACTION!

Comments

Just subbed (mainly to watch the Brass Eye special) - really enjoying the reactions. I agree about this series. I grew up with it and there are a few misses with jokes and characters, but I still have a warm place in my heart for it. I'd love to hear what the thinking was for all of the Shakespear references, and what they thought they were making. I mean, the pilot (just called The Black Adder, if you haven't seen it) has Edmund in his latter incarnation, but maybe they were trying to make it a prestige comedy and it ended up a studio sitcom due to budget. Thing is, it's great as a studio sitcom, so I'm not complaining.

The KKK guys were probably Northern Irish bounty hunters.

I saw the first series when it came out but, like many others, didn't really like it however watching again with yourself I actually quite enjoyed it, weird 😁. I have to say though that after The Hawk revealed himself 🫣 I was left traumatised for the rest of the episode. Still am actually. This is because I instantly recognised The Voice of non other than the great Patrick Allen. The actor that terrified me as a child growing up in the 70's (UK). He was the narrator of a series of Public Information Films called 'Protect and Survive' which were to prepare the public for nuclear war, different samples of which were used in a variety of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's versions of Two Tribes. I still vividly remember 'The air attack warning sounds like... this is the sound...' followed by the air raid warning siren which still freaks me out when I hear it. Also the extremely creepy 'If any member of the family should die whilst in the shelter put them outside but remember to tag them first for identification purposes'. Between this and the other P.I.F. of the 70's such as Lonely Waters (voiced by Donald Pleasence for crying out loud), school sports day on railways lines and the dangers of electricity, just to name a few, I'm shocked that I ever came out from underneath my armour-plated duvet 😁. Of course when we finally left the 70's we were then hit with the animated film 'When The Wind Blows' and the mother of all trauma 'Threads' 😂. Blimey. Happy days 😁.

No spoilers, but Rik Mayall will return.

I noticed the landlord from Bottom as the guy with the scar on his face. The shift in tone, focus and characters between series 1 and the rest is a pretty big one, so I know why people like them a lot more, but I always enjoyed stuff about series 1. Brian Blessed is amazing, look up interviews he's done and when he's telling any stories about his real life adventures.

LyingSecret

Brian Blessed - watch 'I Claudius ' best tv series the BBC has ever done

Mark Jephson

Loved it and ditto, congrats on your 100k. Oh and the small chap in this episode I’m sure is the one that appears in black books in one episode

Respect to you finishing this series, and it is good in its own right I suppose. It isn't just that I was a little young when this aired to appreciate it that I never took to it though. So very looking forward to seeing you watch the rest. I would also suggest that your better half might really enjoy the next 3 series as well. If she's ever free to sit in on one, they're pretty episodical. The first series really was a bit weak for Rowan Atkinsons character

You spotted Rik Mayall's first Blackadder appearance, but the real gold star effort in this episode would have been recognising a young Perry Benson as the cart driver at 23:35, who you saw thirty years later as the mad tailor in Man Down who thinks Greg Davies is a pervert! But as everyone says, real Blackadder begins at this point, with Edmund reinvented as a charming rogue rather than a bumbling clown, and the Pythonesque absurdism dialled down in favour of sharp dialogue and well-crafted farce. Series 1 will always be a bit of a charming curio which stands apart from the rest of the show, almost like a spin-off explaining how it all began; now you're ready for the true Blackadder journey.

Ian Richards

You'll really take to Baldrick from the next season onwards, his true character comes out.

Glad you did the first one KB.. the second one is my fav :) I know you will love it and yes it was Rik Mayall.. he pops up a few times on this adventure :)

Markos

It would be so funny if he hates season 2 and stops watching.

John Hastie

Love season one. It's so bonkers. Honestly I think my only real complaint with it is the sound design; sometimes its hard to hear jokes and dialogue over musical stings and laughter.

ALW

The hype of future seasons compared to S1 I feel will be alittle anticlimactic as you’ve clearly enjoyed it.

Owen Rhodes

Season. 2 & 4 r the best. There is a documentary about the end scenes of s4 where due to some constraints they had to do a cheaper job than they wanted but ended up being the most profound and emotional things you will see.

Lee Pointing

Glad you watched this but can't wait for series 2. ♥

Jason Scade

10 years today. RIP Rik ✌️

bdazzer85

Yeah… the credits say “Mad Gerald…. himself” which is why you didn’t see Rik’s name Is it really ten years?!?

Kevin Hussey

Well done on the 100k subscribers on YouTube, Booms!! You deserve it.

Ash X

I always loved series 4, it's set during WW1

Jehan Ariyaratnam

10 years ago today Rik Mayall died.

Ryan Lynch

So pleased you did season one. Watched it when it originally aired and loved it completely. Looking forward to the rest!

Steve Oxley

And there we are, 'tis done. I'll always stick up for this first series, I enjoy it a lot. Wouldn't it be hilarious if you don't like the following series after all the hype? Nah, I'm sure you'll get along with it just fine. As for Brian Blessed, we really need to get you to watch the film "Flash Gordon" (1980). If you haven't seen it already, but I doubt you could have, if you don't remember Blessed from that! It has enough "bonkers" tones for you to enjoy, and I reckon you'd love it.

Phil Robinson

Always good to see Rik, 10 years ago today since he left us.

[Cykoid]

And in Series 2.

Jay

You're going to enjoy Rik Mayall in season 4...

Phil Tordoff

That is Rik Mayall.

Mouse

After all the hype, I hope you actually like the following seasons or some people are going to be really embarassed. I've always liked season 1 too. Yeah I'll admit it's not as good, but some people seem to think it's awful.

ALW

Congrats on the 100k on YouTube King Boomer! :)
