Red Dwarf S8 Ep3 "Back In The Red" Part 3 REACTION!

Comments

So this is where I'm upto with the reactions and I haven't watched S8 since it came out and I've always called S8 Chucklevision in Space (if you want to know what I mean, Boomer, look up Chucklevision - it's a kids show that everyone in the UK of a certain vintage knows very much. If you ever hear someone say "Oh Dear" and be responded to with "Oh Dear, Oh Dear" or when passing something saying "To me," "To you", that's what they're referencing. Classic slapstick, lots of slide-whistles, etc. And, crucially, aimed at 6-10 year olds. See, the way I saw it, I mentioned in the Nanarchy comments, I was 9-10 when I saw the first 6. Then I saw 7 when it came out. By 1999 when S8 came out, I'm a teenager and the whole series felt off, possibly because I wasn't seeing it with kid-eyes anymore, and there was expectation and build up for months. Watching it as part of a sequence, with no prior, it's really interesting to see how there's not the same feeling with it. And I've analysed the shit out of this series in the meantime and I came to the conclusion that what ruins it (and it'll happen in the next few episodes) is a lack of boundaries between what they could do and what they should do, plus the lack of a straight-man character. Remember in series 1 where the crew were played completely straight? Todd Hunter and Captain Hollister weren't sitcom characters. They were just people working a job. In S8, everyone's trying to get a laugh, everything's played as a joke and it's all far, far too silly. I think the show became a lot sillier, one season after the other, but it reached a tipping point after S6 where it's just not believable. Suddenly the Gelfs have jet fighters, suddenly there's another mechanoid, mugging for the camera and being silly, suddenly a virus is able to be spoken to. Then all of a sudden the whole crew is ressurrected and no hint of a rogue simulant or a gelf but blue midget can dance and there's a whacky character called Killcrazy who's as funny as a needle in the dick. Still, we press ahead :)

Completely agree. It's a relic of the early CGI era. "We can do this now, which therefore means we must!". Like, the explosions in the first episode were amazing because they were real pyrotechnics. If you could get a dancing, animatronic Blue Midget, it'd at least be impressive. In the event, it's not funny, it's too long and you just don't get that type of indulgence in classic RD.

Cat making the blue midgets dance will always be the most unfunny, painfully long sequence the show has ever done. It feels like humour catered to very young children.
