Sure, it's quite different in tone to the other seasons but it still has some hilarious moment, and ultimately establishes Blackadder as an underdog wanting to raise his status while being surrounded by idiots. Plus it's only 6 short episodes. It's not like people can't just wait until you get to S2 if they hate it so much.

It was tight arse yid, Michael Grade who wanted to axe 'Blackadder' altogether and only agreed to give the go ahead for a second series if the budget was halved and there was no expensive location filming at all. Grade made a habit of moaning about budgets and then knocking the productions for looking cheap - yet he (Shylock) held the purse strings! He did exactly the same with 'Doctor Who' the arsehole.

2024-05-17 01:16:00 +0000 UTCIt's been twenty years or more since I last gave Series 1 a proper watch, and one thing I'm appreciating more this time round is the obvious Monty Python influence: it was there in the last episode with the Jumping Jews of Jerusalem, and in this one the scene where they all end up disguised as nuns - complete with falsetto voices and hands over their beards - could come straight out of Holy Grail. Part of Blackadder evolving into a different show from Series 2 onward is that Python influence getting less overt; like any piece of art, it's far better for being able to nod to its inspirations without feeling the need to imitate them. But to the credit of Curtis and Atkinson, during this period when they *were* imitating Python, they managed it pretty well!

One of the main issues they discussed after S1, was that the TV executives and some on the team for the show, felt S1 was far too expansive and covered too much open space and set changes, which affected the amount of actors needed and also character interaction and development... A lower spend was a nice bonus for them due to that change.

It stands on its own with its own merits. The other series are a different character altogether for black adder and a separate chapter altogether. When I was at school and series 1 came out we were so flipping excited!! Loved it.

It's not like they have long to wait till you get round to their precious later series. Anyway - some really great stuff in this one, definitely one of the stronger episodes of S1.
