Phoenix Nights S2 Ep1 REACTION!

Back in business! Maybe...
Jim Bowen also helped in the translation of the oldest known joke-book by testing the material with an audience to make sure the translation got the humour as well as the literal meanings.

We have 2 main courts in the UK a magistrates which deal with everything from divorce (nothing more than a meeting room usually) to low level crimes or felonies as you guys call them. Such as anti social behaviour, speeding fines etc. More serious crimes go to the Crown Court where there are Barristers which are in addition to a solicitor or lawyer as you call them (one prosecuting and one defending) they wear the wigs and so do some Judges. There is quite a serious reason to them and its far from a gimmick.

These are magistrates, no wigs. We have crown court for more serious crimes. That's where they wear the wigs.

8:23 better warm than well done. Lol, if you don't know the reason den Perry says to Brian Potter " just nip inside brian see if my jacket potato is done , better warm than well done" is because we british sometimes cook Jacket Potatoes in the oven and just like Brian's Pheonix club is burnt a jacket potatoe can also get burnt in the oven so den perry is basically rubbing it in Brian's face that the Pheonix club his burnt kind of like a jacket potato can be.

I've seen it blurred elsewhere. Not sure why. We know Peter didn't mind having a dig at someone with the Keith Lard thing, my guess is it was someones actual phone number and people called it. what else could it be? ... update, just looked it up. Yep, (apparently) he was very unprofessional and put actors phone numbers in there. I say apparently because I read it on a forum, not from Peters lips

I met them in a Pantomime here in the early 80s. They were in Babes in the Woods. Why am I saying them for? It was only Bob with a puppet.

Tony Christie originally, they did it in this show, then Peter Kay did it for like Comic Relief or something and they released it as a single (for charity i believe)

Actually, was the name in Brian's black book blurred out originally, for mystery or did KB have to blur it out? If so, what did it say?

Ok, Is Max and Paddy singing 'Amarillo' meta, or did someone else write/sing it before this and that music video came out after this? Either way, nice touch.

In memory of Alan is a reference to a coronation street (soap opera) bad guy called Alan Bradley from decades ago, who died in the show by being hit by a tram in that spot.
The muppet with the wig is played by Jim Bowen, a comedian and was famous as the host of bullseye. His outtakes from this episode are on YouTube and worth watching.
Ironside is a famous old tv show, and I think itβs from America. A disabled lawyer I think.

Blackpool , on the coast of north-west England , is the coastal resort featured in this episode. Traditionally , in the past , the place to go for your summer holidays, especially if you were working class and living in or near big industrial cities such as Liverpool and Manchester. Also very popular with Glaswegians. Nowadays perhaps better known for a place to go for hen and stag weekends. Apparently a bit run down these days, it still has quite a bit to offer: a sandy beach, Blackpool Tower - complete with famous ballroom, the Pleasure Beach Fairground, the trams, and the Blackpool Illuminations along the seafront each autumn.

King boomer! The meat van guy... please do a reaction to Tom stade meat van man. An American comedian in the UK who is hilarious. π you'll love the way he describes the meat van in the uk markets.

The first song Max & Paddy were singing in the van was 'I could be so good for you' which was the theme song for the classic comedy drama 'Minder', back in the 80's the two biggest shows were Minder on ITV with Arthur Daley a ducking and diving con man and on BBC Only Fools with Del Boy. I hope one day you get round to doing this show too.

Wigs are worn in a crown court not magistrates courts. Although in magistrates courts you will normally get more than 1 magistrate judge. Sometimes 3. And they are all volunteers. In a crown court you'll get 1 judge and a jury.

Ironside is a running joke, as it refers to the American tv show βironsideβ where the lead is in a wheelchair, its the same with a lot of hidden jokes like βsweet truck haulβ (say that 7 times drunk,) on the lorry cab in the first episode and in this new series! Btw the bloopers on the dvd extra with Jim Bowen, the hotel owner with the syrup are hilarious!

"He was just about to get to the vinegar strokes and his mobile phone went off.... Can I call you back Mum?" π€£. That bit always makes me laugh. A lot of subtle or regional humour that KB missed in this episode, understandably.

Bob Carolgees and Spit the Dog, a very popular act back n the day.
This was a magistrates court where relatively minor legal infractions are addressed.

Spit the dog and Bob Carolgies (spelling) was a kids entertainer way back when.
It's one of the little subtle jokes they throw in there. As if he'd be hosting a jerry springer-type show. Brilliant.
Kenny Senior is my favourite character. Absolute bullshitter. Like Jat from the Inbetweeners, but a little sadder.

I think wigs are worn in a crown court. This is a magistrates court
Simon Barker
2024-05-15 16:14:48 +0000 UTC
I could be wrong (please someone correct me if so) but I believe in the lower courts (for example magistrates / county courts) they don't typically wear the court wigs, or at-least it's at their discretion.
You generally only see them wearing that attire in the higher courts (crown / supreme courts) as I understand it
