Blackadder S1 Ep2 "Born To Be King" REACTION!

The fix is in!

Blackadder S1 Ep2 "Born To Be King" REACTION!

Comments

I think the issue with series 1 is that most Gen Xer's watched series 2 first, as they were a little young when series 1 came out, and ofc there was no easy access to past episodes until the BBC ran a repeat. It's not BAD tho, it's just different, and totally worth watching just for Brian Blessed. Blackadder's Christmas Carol is still played every year after xmas dinner in our family, as we descend into a drunken stupor quoting every line...

Fenn

Not watching the first series would deprive you of the glorious performance of Brian Blessed, the Queen who I think is really funny and some great guest stars. The hate that gets piled on it, is because its very different to the others. This has a silly Monty Python like style while tye otyers are more verbal relying on sarcastic wit, I think the others are better, but this one has some of my favourite moments, it's still a good show.

The bowl cuts they had are horrific.

Flash Gordon only got made because of the success of the first Star Wars film, released 3 years earlier. Interestingly, it was George Lucas who, after the success of his 1973 film, American Graffiti, wanted to make a sci-fi film, and tried to buy the rights to Flash Gordon, to remake it, but he wasn’t given the rights so decided to create his own sci-fi universe and the result was Star Wars. As a film, Flash Gordon is a fun little romp. It has Max Von Sydow as the wonderful Ming the Merciless (looking so much like the actor who played him back in the 1940’s serial), the beautiful, sexy Ornella Muti as his daughter, Princess Aura and a fantastic pre Bond Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin, playing Aura’s boyfriend and Flash Gordon’s enemy. It’s very camp sci-fi but I think you’d like it, KB. Please give it a go? Oh, and I second a watch of I, Claudius, KB. We all know how much you love Roman history, so we know you won’t be disappointed if you watch it. It has some fantastic British actors in it. The wonderful Derek Jacobi, playing the title role (Brian Blessed, as already mentioned), and the brilliant John hurt playing the insane Caligula (a few years before playing Kane who gets his chest ripped open in Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, Alien.) A word of caution: it is extremely violent and bloody in places, so perhaps not one for Queen Boomer to watch.

The first time Baldrick says I have a cunning plan. Definitely not the last.

Neal Murdoch

Oh, yeah, Flash Gordon the movie from 1980. Like most other heroes, originally a comic book, then a black & white T.V. Show in the '30's and '40's, (hey, maybe there were radio dramas, too), the 1980 Movie with Queens soundtrack and then the bad 2008 T.V. Show.

I am SURE queen boomer would enjoy Blackadder from season 2 onwards. Just reminds me of how much of a genius Ben Elton is.

John Hastie

Reaction to The Flash Gordon film would be cool 😎

Martyn Dawson

Shocking isn't it? I tried to get through this episode but only lasted 10 minutes.

Martin N

Yeah literally can’t wait until S2, S3. S4, this is a little embarrassing to watch

Duncan

I love it . Comedy value is subjective 😅

Erica

Yes I agree! The setting and the score are so effective . That witchsmeller episode scared me so much as a child but I still watched it over and over 😀

Erica

I've learnt that Series 1 is pretty good too , thanks to watching along here. 👍👍👍

South Coast Rich

Watxh I Claudius for Brian Blessed. ( often considered to be the best BBC tv series ever done )

Mark Jephson

Have to agree, I've always loved it for its setting, and the music - the cast were pretty great too. "The Witchsmeller Pursuivant" is my favourite from S1. It's best to just take it on its own merits, rather than comparing it to the later, very different series - it's like comparing apples and oranges.

Phil Robinson

It was Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, I believe.

Phil Robinson

Yeah, bit much from Rob. I hadn't intended to make a thing of it; I was just pointing out the hilarious gigachad nature of Richard IV as a character.

ALW

In regards to the fashion choices from different eras. The Military choices through time and to this day have got to be the strangest! cough cough the Greek pom pom shoes.

Laurence P-O

Reaction to Flash Gordon incoming?? 🤞

Lee Gridley

Calm down Noigel, you don't even rule the English Channel these days

Colin R

I cannot wait for you to get to Series 2. I just can't bring myself to watch this series - although it has some funny moments - as I can't bear Blackadder's character here. He is completely transformed after this series and becomes witty and scheming - and Baldrick becomes his stupid sidekick. It works so much better.

ZedMC

What castle was used for exterior scenes? Looked very well preserved.

Ryan Lynch

KB should also recognise him as the Gungan king in The Phantom Menace. Though it's not exactly his finest role haha. Brian Blessed was also Lord Locksley in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

Relyx

I don’t know why people don’t rate this series it’s so entertaining to me I’ve always loved it . He said my father only got anywhere with her because he told her there was a cure for diarrhoea haha. I think you’ll like the episode the Queen of Spain’s beard

Erica

It's not as hilarious as the plot of 'Braveheart' with Scotland laughably supposed to have defeated some ridiculous, pathetic made-up, English tyranny! The Jocks' attempt at an Empire was an utter failure from the start (The Darien Scheme) and what would you know, Scotland after their defeat, were totally bankrupt and guess who they turned to for help...? That's right, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Rob Walters

Series 1 is excruciating to watch. I'm gonna struggle through 'till the good stuff from series 2 onwards. It's just so incredibly bad.

Martin N

Brian Blessed is in the fun, campy, Queen soundtracked film version of Flash Gordon (1980). The tv series is from the 1940s or thereabouts. BB is also in an awesomely good, award winning Roman Empire saga called 'I, Claudius'. It's almost 11 hours long over 12 episodes and is based on a very famous historical novel of the same name, first published in 1934. It's totally gripping with good acting and great dialog. Intrigue, political manipulation, sex scandals, treason, treachery, murder, power grabs, etc. You'd love it, KB. And it seems you'd be the first person in the world to react to it on YouTube. From Wiki; I, Claudius follows the history of the early Roman Empire, narrated by the elderly Roman Emperor Claudius, from the year 24 BC to his death in AD 54. The series opens with Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome, attempting to find an heir, and his wife, Livia, plotting to elevate her son Tiberius to this position. An expert poisoner, Livia uses the covert assassination and betrayal of her rivals to achieve her aims, beginning with the death in 22 BC of Marcellus. The plotting, double-crossing and murder continue for many decades, through the reign of Tiberius, the political conspiracy of his Praetorian Prefect Sejanus and the depraved rule of the lunatic emperor Caligula, culminating in the accidental rise to power of his uncle Claudius...

The thing I always found amusing about this episode was the implication that England conquered Scotland. Obviously they were just using our modern royal titles and such and probably didn't give it much thought, and the eventual union of the crowns was diplomatic instead of military, but it's amusing to ponder it. With Richard IV in charge, I am not surprised.

ALW

Everything in its right place. 👍 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onRk0sjSgFU
