Phoenix Nights S1 Ep1 REACTION!
Added 2024-04-11 16:00:05 +0000 UTC
New reaction, new characters, new muppetry!
In answer to your question of why Brian Potter is in a wheelchair. During this, a fully able Potter swam to collect the safe but in doing so, he found himself being pinned up by a floating fruit machine. He then entered a coma until the New Year. Upon exiting his coma, he was made aware that not only had the club been closed but he was also disabled from the waist down.

I think max and Paddy's road to nowhere would probably be a better fit for your humour. It's like a spin off of this series

I used to watch this and I loved it. But my aunt and uncle did run a working men's club just like the Phoenix Club. I can see why many Americans won't get the humour and a lot of references will go over your head. It's not your fault.
I think you'd love Coupling, and the randomness of Green Wing and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace a lot more.
Mark Fillingham
2024-04-17 00:57:26 +0000 UTC
I know how much this show is loved in the UK and thought it was great too. I may wrong But I just don't know if the humour is transferable to someone who has never seen any northern culture. Peter Kay is an observational comic and if you've never observed this kind of thing in UK it prob won't be funny.

2024-04-15 12:07:00 +0000 UTC
Watch the mighty boosh instead. Very funny show, and requires no knowledge of British culture as its set in a different universe. Stars Noel Fielding (Richmond from IT Crowd), and Matt Berry (Douglas Reynolm from IT crowd).

2024-04-15 11:33:00 +0000 UTC
Honestly cannot see how you're going to get a lot of the references. It's a great programme, but I do think being British or having lived here is required to get this programme.
Matt
2024-04-14 22:53:03 +0000 UTC
Yeah the point is that it’s a racist dogwhistle and the journalist picks it up before Brian Potter does. It’s a racist song disguised as an “innocent” song (like the old music hall songs full of double entendres) so Potter doesn’t spot it till it’s pointed out.

Not to mention the accents. Although he'll get an ear for that probably quite quickly, but I think he'd have benefited from listening on headphones, and with proper subtitles

2024-04-13 23:56:53 +0000 UTC
I've never watched this before but it's clear he missed the bit where he explained about it being a song about shoes his dad bought him being the wrong colour. Which of course is the joke because out of context the song certainly does sound very racist
irreverend
2024-04-13 23:45:25 +0000 UTC
whoever suggested this is stretching boomers knowledge of northern british culture to the limit having him watch this, everything will go over your head and i don't blame you its incredibly niche

Although a Northern English humour there's enough wackiness, absurdity and drama that you'll enjoy. Don't worry about Benidorm. You'll get to know the story of the doormen ('bouncers') Max (Peter Kay) and Paddy (Patrick McGuiness) and how/why they end up in the spin-off 'Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere'. Look out for the rival club boss character 'Den Perry' owner of 'The Banana Grove'. Brian Potter's sworn enemy.

I have NOT missed the point of the joke! Yes, the song is either deliberately or accidentally racist, but the song is actually about shoes. Whether the band understand that they are being racist or whether they are naive about the implications is not clear. The lyrics are:
"Me father worked hard all his life down pits in't tannery,
He laboured every hour God sent from June to January.
He saved his pennies in a jar to buy his son some shoes,
But when they sent him black instead of white he blew a bloody fuse.
Send the buggers back, oh send the buggers back.
These aren't the ones I wanted, son, I'm sending them straight back.
I said I wanted white ones, they've sent us bloody black,
I'm going to put the lid back on and send the buggers back."

Being a northerner now living in London/Italy this certainly raised an eyebrow when I saw it pop up as latest reaction. Dry northern humour is so harsh to pick up on and almost aggressive at times. It can be totally missed or taken the wrong way.
I could write a book on the way I was received after moving from Manchester to a small village in Hertfordshire. I can't see this lasting on the channel. KB's blank expression through most of the video says it all.

If you understand and get the humour and jokes in this, then you sir King Boomer are a certified Brit. This is about a northern working man’s club very much bedded in early 00s northern UK, I’m 26 and from the south of England so haven’t really been graced with a working man’s club yet - so sometimes the humour even goes over my head👀
Sam Dilks
2024-04-12 08:33:13 +0000 UTC

2024-04-12 06:44:00 +0000 UTC
I was born & raised in Manchester and I have family from Bolton. This is my comfort show when I’m homesick. I’m really glad you’re reacting to this, although the humour is very northern England - even southerners don’t always find it funny, so I’m not sure how much of the humour will get lost in translation.
Max & Paddy might be more funny for you, but it is a spin-off so you need to watch this first. I do hope you enjoy it but understand if not.
Peter Kay’s Car Share would be something Queen Boomer would like. It’s heart warming comedy rather than a laugh a minute.
Thanks for trying northern comedy King Boomer, keep it up!

Decent choice, yeah first episode is normally just to introduce setting, characters, etc and it gets better. It's not one of those shows which is constantly going for gag, gag, gag but normally centering around big gags here and there. Yeah that's Jeff and Lesley. Well spotted.

This is a terrific show. It's one of the most parochial of UK sitcoms though, the humour is very northern and rooted in a certain naff quality of small-time British entertainment. I'll be interested to see how KB gets along with its sense of humour - and the accents!

Oliver
2024-04-11 19:26:19 +0000 UTC
With the song, the joke is that the song isn’t meant as offensive or racist. It depends on the context. The singer at the start explains the song is about a pair of holy communion shoes that his dad ordered and when they arrived they were the wrong colour. It’s easily missed but the point is meant as a reference to political correctness etc.

The song was about a boy who wanted white dance shoes but got given black shoes and then it's all abut sending the black shoes back! So it's not a racist song, it only sounded like a racist song! The Northern accents can be a bit difficult in places, especially because the actors can talk over each other or trail off at the end of a sentence, so it can be hard work to keep up, but I think most of it is understandable. It will take more than one episode to get into the rhythm of it.

Just finished watching - I think you'll be OK as it goes on KB, and you pick up the accent a bit more. There is a LOT of specific references in this though to either very Northern things, or things very specific to British TV nostalgia that we're gonna have to help you with at some points.
Yes, that's Jeff from Peep Show - Neil Fitzmaurice, who co-wrote this with Peter Kay along with Dave Spikey, who plays Jerry.

Appreciate you sticking through this first episode KB. Phoenix Nights is a tough sell considering a lot of it is based on cheesy Northern working man's club culture. Also, the accents can be difficult even for many Brits to pick up on, let alone anyone outside of the UK.
I'd consider this show to have the Only Fools & Red Dwarf slow burn syndrome, as it takes a couple of episodes to kick in. It really does pick up though, although I wouldn't blame you if much of the comedy goes over your head.
Jay

The audience of elderly people in the club had no idea most of the time what was going on. They aren't actors. Also at the end of each show they have funny auditions of acts to appear in the Phoenix club. These were real acts

Peter Kay also plays the bouncer with the neck brace. The other bouncer is his great friend Paddy McGuinness. Later they made a spin off series about the two bouncers called Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere. Peter Kay is also one of the top stand up comedians in Britain. Most of the other main characters are played by stand ups too

There is only 2 series and they're gold, don't worry about this going the way of Benidorm. It will be interesting to see how a very northern show is viewed from an american. all i can say is stick with it through opening episodes as you get to know the characters

Great that you noticed Jeff from Peep Show 😅 There are some really funny episodes on here. Not sure if you noticed but the bouncer Max, is also Peter Key. I say that because people don’t always notice first time! Great reaction KB! Can’t wait for more! 😁

Interesting choice! There is something very endearing about Peter Kay (I think his 'Car Share' series tops this one). I'm curious to see how an American will respond to working class northern humour. I think even more so than Partridge there'll be a lot of references that will mean little to you, but it shouldn't affect your overall enjoyment of the show.
