Don't be the drummer in this band!

THIS IS SPINAL TAP! (1984) MOVIE REACTION!

Comments

The volume control on BBC iPlayer goes up to 11…

Kieran B

I had the exact reaction as you to the "These go to 11" line when I first watched this movie 30 years ago.

Joe Blakeley

Really fun movie. The main blonde guy played by Michael McKean, he was amazing as Saul’s older brother Chuck in the prequel show to Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul.

James Ellison

even the blonde guy looks like the late, great lead guitarist, Steve Clark!

Industrialist2015ofUk

A cult classic which has stood the test of time, still just as funny today, another great film which isn't a Mockumentary, more a Rock dramedy based on real life experience is 'Almost Famous', you've probably seen it as it's a US cult classic in it's own right, but its always been a film I've really enjoyed.

Mark Jones

I was just about to recommend the same. Cracking stuff.

Stephen

Christopher Guest Mockumentaries are awesome. You should check out Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman & A mighty Wind.

Neal Murdoch

thank you for properly outlining how hilarious that scene is! magic!

Craig McCulloch

I said that to him - he will always be the guy from short circuit 2 haha

Craig McCulloch

24 Hour Party People - trueish band comedy starring Steve Coogan -

emu cat

watch The Ruttles please King Boomio !

Andy Farmer

You should check out the Oasis documentary Supersonic

Kilo

Some of the finest lyrics ever written. I know, for a told me so.

Chris C

Also in comedies involving music Wayne's World and a sequel. But probably the film closest to Spinal Tap is the touching, but also unintentionally funny Anvil, The story of Anvil. Which is a real life version of it, but made about 20 years later.

Yaapsdad

Other comedy films with the three main actors in are A Mighty Wind (A folk music mockumentary) and For Your Consideration (an Oscars comedy). So i suppose this is a bit like the cornetto trilogy. Three different stories with the same lead actors to link them. Also with Christopher Guest is Best in Show (a dog show comedy). There was a 1994 follow up to This is Spinal Tap. I've never seen it so can't vouch for it's quality. There is rumoured to be a further Spinal Tap movie in production

Yaapsdad

don't be silly 🀣

Industrialist2015ofUk

If you've watched The Simpsons, and who hasn't, then you'll know Harry Shearer's voice. He voiced many of the regular characters.

Yaapsdad

There were a lot of great comedy actors and comedians that came out of alternative comedy and most modern British comedians have a different way of doing there act because of it. Out went the casual racism and the sexist jokes about the wife, mother-in-law etc to be replaced by genuine stories and funny jokes. The godfather of Alternative comedy was Alexei Sayle

Yaapsdad

I like the subtle line about their reputation as 'one of England's loudest bands', not greatest, most talented, critically acclaimed just 'loudest'. Although primarily actors and writers they can actually play. I saw them live in 1992 at the old Wembley Stadium at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. They did one number 'The Majesty of Rock' . The whole concert was broadcast live on BBC TV. Here's the YouTube link https://youtu.be/EBn1rrqR3QY?si=WiVhaKoAZpvIwEKR They have also put out 3 albums: The soundtrack to the film 'This Is Spinal Tap' (1984), 'Break like The Wind' (1992) - 1 track 'Christmas With the Devil' features serious guitarists Jeff Beck, Slash, Joe Satriani and Steve Lukather . The 3rd I saw on Spotify was 'Back From The Dead' (2009). Just read the song titles and the lyrics, funny stuff .

Def Leppard are over-produced pop shite, not in the same league as ACDC. Even Tap are better than the Defs, and they're actors.

Fordy7169

I noticed principal Skinner every time he spoke I kept picturing him.

Amanda

Also short circuit 2

Amanda

LOL yes but it was stairway to heaven the quote was " i could play stairway to heaven when i was 12... Jimmy Page didnt write it until he was 22, i think that says something"

Markos

In the UK in the 80's a new breed of comedians labelled 'Alternative' evolved and their spiritual home was the 'The Comedy Store' in Soho London, a comedy club, then before long they all started bringing their comedy to the TV with various shows such as 'The Young Ones', two of the main protagonists were Rik and Ade from 'Bottom', as a rather large collective group these comedians started making a series of Films and Featurettes under the name 'The Comic Strip Presents....', I have the DVD boxset and over 18 years they made 39 of these films, two of them are Mockumentaries following the fictional band 'Bad News', as others have mentioned, Rik and Ade are in the band of course, I'd love to see you react to them and some other Comic Strip Presents stuff, some of them are awesome.

Mark Jones

You should also watch Anvil. It's the real life spinal tap and so funny

Aaron Close

It's worse than that! In the chaos of that conversation: Ian - "how are we going to get 14 people on a King Leisure Bed?" Concierge - "Don't tempt me Sir..." Ian - "This... twisted old FRUIT here...!" Concierge - "I'm just as god made me Sir!" Fucking glorious. The indignation on that chaps face is forever etched on my mind.

Phil Robinson

Yes

Brian Moran

KB missed my favourite line "this absolute prune..." "Im just as god made me!!"

Craig McCulloch

is that the 1 where the guy say " Jimmy Page wrote heartbeaker at 24 - well I could play it at 22..."?

Craig McCulloch

without picking a guitar up - its inverted 5ths around 6th or 8th fret DG and AD - been a lot of years this end lol

Craig McCulloch

Used to be able to play Big Bottom, and Sex Farm on guitar, been a few years though!

Phil Robinson

I KNEW you would like it lol tonight I’m gonna rock and big bottom are my favourites I can even play some of that on the guitar 🀣🀣

Craig McCulloch

Actually, Jeff Beck thought that Nigel Tuffnell was a direct rip-off of him

Craig McCulloch

KB. Your big fat quiz Richard Ayoade reaction on youtube. Did you notice his teammate was "Richmond" from The IT Crowd

Yaapsdad

And was before this!

Nick Hughes

You know Harry Shearer does loads of voices in The Simpsons!

Nick Hughes

finally i get to see this! closest band to them resembling i would say is Def Leppard... who btw Boomer, are miles better than ACDC πŸ˜† yep, i said it.

Industrialist2015ofUk

Oh, absolutely - I hope KB does so!

Phil Robinson

I think it's a movie that deserves several re-watches, as many of the subtleties of its observational comedy tend to go unnoticed on first viewing.

Jay

Their English accents are good. They fooled me. Didn't realise they are American.

Mouse

That is a brilliant touch, shame you can't actually vote 11 but it still makes me chuckle!

Mark Jones

You gotta watch The Rutles. From the Monty Python team.

Paul Puckerin

you should watch bad news tour and more bad news... bad news is a band like spinal tap with adrian edmondson and rik mayall.. its a rockumentary but so ridiculous !

Markos

An absolute joy, and a genuine classic - glad to watch it with you KB - was a bit concerned you might not warm to it - but I needn't have worried. Sex Farm is a stone cold banger, of course! You definitely do know some of the main cast, but not necessarily in the way you're thinking! Get ready for all the trivia you could ever want in the rest of the comments - I can't be arsed, I just had a good time with this reaction, and I'm pretty tired :)

Phil Robinson

King Boomer - this movie was completely improvised. This crew made some brilliant comedy movies like A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman, and Best in Show. All improvised.

Paul Puckerin

but did yuo all know that .Bad News are a fictional English heavy metal band created for the Channel 4 television series The Comic Strip Presents.... Its members were Vim Fuego (played by Ade Edmondson) on vocals and lead guitar; Den Dennis (Nigel Planer) on rhythm guitar; Colin Grigson (Rik Mayall) on bass; and Spider "Eight-Legs" Webb (Peter Richardson) on drums.[1] The band continued outside the context of the TV series, with the actors (in character) eventually playing a number of live gigs as Bad News, and recording an album (1987's Bad News. it was before the Spinal tap. =)

Nothinghalo

The blonde guy was in Airheads. A 90's rock mockumentary with Adam Sandler, Steve Buschemi and Brendan Fraser.

matthew lagasse

i am so happy you chose this !!! :) :)

Markos

Christopher Guest (Nigel) has created a bunch more mockumentaries that are completely improvised like Spinal Tap. As a dog owner, I think you should definitely check out Best in Show!

Manly Stump

Quick bit of trivia. This is the only movie on IMDB that has a rating that goes up to 11.

Jay

shit sandwich - 'you cant write that!'

Craig McCulloch

You can't really dust for vomit!

Jay

A classic.

Richard M

This one goes up to 11
