I think a spin-off novel explained why this Kochanski speaks with an English accent (whereas she had always sounded Scottish up until this point). The explanation is something like, In her universe, she was sent to a posh boarding school in England as a child.

I also think the recast was a good idea; it helps cement her as a fish out of water type, somewhat similar to Rimmer in a sense, whereas the original Kristine was a bit more of a jokey tomboy who could give as good as she got.
