I'll just talk over you.. at the owl sanctuary...

I'm Alan Partridge S1 Ep2 "Alan Attraction" REACTION!

Comments

The ‘laugh track’ is a live audience… (shown a VT for anything on location). Have never noticed anything wrong with the laugh track

Kieran B

Late catching up with this series. There's lots of folklore around owls, they used to be thought of as demons who brought death, farmers used to nail them to the outside of barn doors to ward off predators. The white owl is a Barn Owl, some think that they are the origin of the white ghost image we think of, as they fly around graveyards at night, and they're flight habit is quartered and often flashing by, so looks like souls raising from graves and disappearing. They also make a harrowing screech call.

Adi Hughes

Yeah there are a few owl sancturies. And a donkey sanctuary near me here in Leeds

Andy Farmer

Knowing Me Knowing You is worth a watch but even better is The Day Today - landmark seminal series. I can't reccomend this enough.

Duncan Hart

The episode titles are all Movie names with a word replaced by Alan, so for this one Fatal Attraction became Alan attraction. See if you can guess the movie as the season continues. I think the rule they gave themselves was the replaced word couldn't be a noun.

Neal Murdoch

You don't need to watch KMKY before you watch IAP, but you'll enjoy it. It's a spoof chat show and you can see at the end why the BBC wouldn't recommission it.

Neal Murdoch

lol surprisingly yes

William Stewart

So that's real laughter on Mrs Browns boys... Wow

1234

Denholm Renholm Is in the next one!

Love people just do nothing!

1234

Episode 3 with the farmers is my favourite from this series 😂 Chris Morris makes an appearance.

1234

You need to watch Alan in reverse, newest first. This Time is epic... it's peak partridge

DFA

Since you asked directly for feedback in this episode: in my opinion it's not a major problem to watch both series of I'm Alan Partridge before Knowing Me Knowing You, but I would definitely watch KMKY at some stage - it's still almost as good as IAP.

squarewindow

KMKY is definately worth a watch but as others have said it's not essential. I watched it years after this and simply knowing he had a talk show is enough.

GlideSlidey

In one of the episodes

Gavin Doidge

Graham Linehan, writer of Father Ted and The IT Crowd will be

Gavin Doidge

Next time, jump on the bed in front of Queen Boomer, legs spread (like Renholm from IT Crowd) and say "let battle commence", report back how it went.

LyingSecret

You need to watch "people just do nothing " made by the BBC and i think they dis 5 seasons and paramount or universal made a feature film from it. You can think me later king boomer

Craig

You don't need to watch 'Knowing me, knowing you', it's enough to know it exists. It's fine, but the character was still developing, something to go back to one day maybe. It's high cringe humour mostly. The highest really. The main takeaway is that it's named after the ABBA song, which is why Alan Partridge's 'catchphrase' is 'aha!'. Because that's how the song goes and how he'd start each episode. It was also the theme tune to the show.

Ian Tellam

Don’t worry about stopping watching I’m Alan Partridge before Knowing Me Knowing You but you’ll really like KMKYWAP, it stands alone as a very funny series and you’ll then realise how Alan ended up where he is in I’m Alan Partridge. Then you need to watch his North Norfolk Digital series and then This Time which will bring you up to date 😉

Mike G.

Definitely, Partridge is hugely re-watchable. Once you know the character's traits, the eps become funnier with repeat viewing.

Jason Scade

Do you know if he's seen 'Life's Too Short' (2011) with Warwick Davis? It's Gervais/Merchant. Excellent super-cringe comedy.

Jason Scade

The Barn Owl (The White one) a family of them lives near me in North West England, You never see them but you hear them a lot at night.

Daniel Heywood

It doesn't have canned laughter it is filmed in front of a live studio audience with the locational shots shown to the audience on a plasma screen, canned laughter is actually forbidden on the BBC.

William Stewart

Ah, there goes Extras too then!

Lee

He's said a few times that he's already watched all of Ricky's stuff so I'd be surprised if he hasn't seen it.

BigChanChan

I think I actually found KMKY funnier the second time watching it, after the second series of I'm Alan Partridge. Maybe because I knew the character better but possibly because I was a bit young the first time to really get the point of the show beyond 'oh it's a TV presenter who's rude to everyone'.

Jazz Chilli

Me too. I can't fathom how it's still being made.

Billy Rockets

There's definetly some Butt Munchers out there in this big ol' world😅

Brodie Vickers

Not lined up yet ... (to my knowledge) but it would be a great series for him to react to , he goes off what the comments section asks, and sometimes his own personal choice

Craig McCulloch

Kmky was ok, funny in parts but you don’t need to start watching that first

Duncan

Urgh I hate this show with a passion.

Dave Williams

Have you considered doing The Ricky Gervais show? Animated series of radio conversations between Ricky, Steve & Karl. Apologies if you've done it before.

Lee

I thought the same thing 😂

James Ellison

Yeah, it's highest tier UK comedy, mate. Your sides hurt from laughing and it's so massively rewatchable. I've seen all four of them, I prefer to watch the tv series version too. The film edit versions cut out too much good stuff but they are good for attracting casual viewers to the project. That's funny with your sister :) but it is very real-feeling, for sure.

Jason Scade

Yes brilliant series, with the same writers as Father Ted on the writing team too, the King and Queen would love it for sure.

Mark Jones

The Trip is brilliant, I remember when it was first on after a few episodes I was chatting to my sister and she thought it was basically a reality tv show, when I explained it was a loosely scripted sitcom with them just playing themselves she felt like a right lemon! 🤣 They also go to Italy, Spain and Greece in later series, and I think the there are film length versions edited down which I've never watched as I like to see it all.

Mark Jones

Your outro... 35:11 to 35:43 You did an Alan Partridge-ism. 😂

Jason Scade

2nd black books! It's brilliant!

Tim Phillipson

I wouldn't say watching knowing me knowing you would be hugely beneficial to you but I would watch the Christmas special knowing me knowing yule. It's a good way to show you what his char show was like plus it's the best one of the kmky series.

Tim Phillipson

I think a lot of people saying to skip KMKY have probably watched it many times and perhaps are a bit tired of it. It's true that later Partridge stuff is superior, but KMKY is still excellent 90s Coogan / Partridge. I think telling people to skip it (if they like Partridge / Coogan) is doing them a disservice. KB, after you've seen a few different Partridge projects, I'd mindbogglingly highly recommend a comedy series Steve Coogan does with Rob Brydon, where they play themselves more or less, called 'The Trip'. It's a comedy / road trip with Coogan and Brydon improvising some of the funniest material you've heard as they travel around North of England and dine in a fancy restaurant (once per episode). They also argue and bicker a lot and have countless attempts at out-impersonating each other with their impressive celebrity impersonations. Sometimes they bicker with each other while they are both in character as a celebrity. Michael Caine vs Michael Caine, etc. 🤣

Jason Scade

you don't need to watch Knowing Me Knowing You. you just need to know he once had a TV talk show that was a mess 😁

suppliedreedo

That's a fair point and since he's already seen Alpha Papa continuity is shot anyway.

Z is for Zed

KB, HBO's excellent 'Veep' series is the USA version of 'The Thick of It'.

Jason Scade

KMKY not essential. After season 2 of IAP I'd just keep moving through the Partridge Universe sequentially. His stuff just gets better and better, and the character really develops over time (plus the more you watch, the more you'll pick up on little details). There's also more than enough of it to keep you occupied for some time: Mid Morning Matters, Welcome to the Places of My Life, Scissored Isle, This Time. Nothing after IAP has a laugh soundtrack, which is also a positive, but you'll get used to it on IAP before long. Also the audiobooks and podcasts as some have mentioned - probably not material to react to but genuinely some of the funniest listening around, although you'll need to have watched most of his TV stuff to properly get them. There will indeed be some references that go over your head - e.g. the (minor) celebrities he mentions, but that doesn't really matter. Just know they are all suitably random and absurd, while also somehow making perfect sense in the world of Partridge. Bill Oddie is a prime example: a mild mannered elderly ornithologist who used to present TV wildlife shows in the 90s. He and Alan are supposedly close friends (perhaps frenemies). (Side note: apparently Steve Coogan has never met Bill Oddie in real life, despite continuing to mention him in even very recent Partridge material. Oddie (in real life) has been quizzed about the Partridge "friendship" and finds the whole thing very bemusing, but fortunately sees the funny side.)

.MT

You don’t need to go back. Knowing Me Knowing You is not as funny, and not necessary to enjoy this series

Knowing me knowing you is Amazing but you can watch it after this. It's fine

Aaron Close

I’d finish this and maybe go back later to fill in the history, it’s worth doing but not vital to this series, thanks for your time and feedback 😬

MarkC

yess

L M

You should look at “the thick of it” at some point. Armando Iannucci who produces Alan Partridge this was responsible for that. Its amazing. And don’t forget Toast of London with Matt Berry, Douglas Renholm from IT crowd. Hands down one of the funniest off the wall shows ever made.

Chris Halsall

I'm glad you're going to start Mrs Brown's Boys.

Billy Rockets

Excellent surprise! :D ♥ KB, squeeze in just the first episode of 'Knowing Me Knowing You', while you're doing I'm Alan Partridge? Partridge is very inept on the prior show but also full of himself at the same time. And very rude and obnoxious to his guests and the social cringe and awkwardness is pretty high. I think you and Queen B will laugh lots for ep 1 of KMKYWAP.

Jason Scade

Oh yeah regarding the laughter, don't know if it was intentional but you are right, sometimes the amount of laughter is off. Not sure if it's legit with a few frankenstein edits (inserted from other areas) or if it is just fully canned though.

Matt

Laughters tracks in general have dated pretty badly i'd say

Alex

I hated reading the "you need to have watched knowing me knowing you otherwise bla bla" as they were making out like you'd be lost without it. It's good and sure add it to the long list far far down and get around to it eventually but it's nowhere near as good as I'm Alan Partridge. Even this time with you reacting I was laughing a lot. Next episode is one of the best imo. You might notice a few of your favourite actors from the other reactions

Matt

There's an undercurrent of melancholy throughout Alan Partridge, but it's very on-the-nose as the car speeds off into the night while Hot Chocolate plays on the radio. I always kind of loved that scene. Like others, I don't think KMKY is essential viewing to get IAP, but it's well worth a watch. It's also worth watching The Day Today at some point, which was where the Alan Partridge character was first seen on TV and also the precursor to Brass Eye.

Charlie

The receptionist (Sally Phillips) also plays Minna Häkkinen in Veep.

James Wilkinson

100% continue with this, it just gets better and better. Having said that, even though it’s out of sequence, I think you’ll both really enjoy Knowing Me Knowing You when this ends.

Dans_t16s

Great reaction Boomer. I know you'll grow to love Alan. There are so many layered jokes and aspects to Coogan's character that you pick up on subsequent viewings - there's a reason Partridge has become such a landmark character. Can't wait for the next one. As others have said, definitely put Knowing Me Knowing You on the list of reactions in the future.

Tony Hall

Yes if you've got the files for 'I'm Alan Partridge Series 2' carry on after this one. As folks have said the 'Knowing me , Knowing you' prequel series is not essential to what you're watching now. Having said that the last special Xmas episode 'Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan Partridge' shows why he didn't get a 2nd Series of his chat show and features the BBC head honcho Tony Hayers who had to smell the cheese in 1st episode of what you're watching now.

Fordy7169

Hopefully Black Books is one of the shows you’ve got lined up. It’s the same type of muppet nonsense that you already love.

Julian T

Richard Madeley 🤣

TheMightyAtom

thanks!

Stephen H

Btw there's a 20th Anniversary of Peep Show Q&A uploaded to YouTube today. https://youtu.be/DwO1HP7ZS-c?si=eL8n6rnziLviAc1O

SJB

Jill is played by Julia Deakin who is in all 3 Cornetto Trilogy movies because she was in 'Spaced' which was the TV Series which pre-empted the Cornetto Trilogy, I'm guessing it's not the first time you've heard that recommended and probably already have it on a future viewing list somewhere. Talking of Alan being unpredictable, I wasn't really expecting the art of Anilingus or 'Rimming' to crop up in conversation today, and the couple of cheeky farts, you really are well on your way to becoming an honorary Brit! 😁🤣

Mark Jones

Roger Moore not the Hoff

Mr Robot

The wheeeeelchairs line still makes me laugh all these years later

David Mannion

KB, there a British Meme called "Accidental Partridge" where people upload videos (mainly to Youtube) of TV Presenters/News Anchors saying stupid stuff on air which makes them look like AP. Not sure if there's any compilations of them but worth a look

Steve King

'Knowing Me, Knowing You' is great and you should certainly do them at some point but you don't have to have seen them before you watch all of these.

Steve King

The lady in this episode plays one of the prostitutes in episode 1 of the IT Crowd (the photo montage of the prostitutes in Amsterdam with Moss and Roy at the fairground).

Wayne Atkinson

2nd thing you were gonna say was "SMELL MY CHEESE!!"

Craig McCulloch

dont listen to the crowd asking for knowing me knowing you. It's really not quite as good as this and doesn't really add too much to the character beyond what you see on IAP

Joe

You might want to check out the chat show later, it's pretty funny but you can watch this without seeing it for now

Richard Stokes

You'll definitely recognise two comedy actors in the next episode.

Jay

Yes Quentin Taratino it and go back after this, would be silly not to if you like the character.

Wilss

It's just because the laughter is at those points because when you've followed the character over a long time certain idiosyncrasies have a different funnier connotation, I think you'll get it a bit more as time goes on.

R Lawrence

I’m so glad you’re watching this 😂😂

James Dowling

So happy you're watching this. :) You can always go back to Knowing Me Knowing You later, it's not a massive deal watching it this way round.

squarewindow

I'd say, for a bit more context, when you get round to it, watch a few clips of the old show, if there's any on YouTube.

R Lawrence

Oops lol.

Brian Moran

As others have said, knowing me knowing you is a little different and doesn't really have many laugh out loud moments. It's good, but certainly not essential. I would like to throw out a Steve Coogan film suggestion, 'The Parole officer', it's great. It also features a certain Cersei Lannister 😉

David Williams

It's not David Hasselhoff, it's James Bond actor Roger Moore :D

John Dawber

Sniff my Blue Nun.

Colin R

You really don't need to go back to Knowing Me Knowing You, you've got the idea of his background so I think you're good to push on.

Adam McLaughlan

Agreed. Definitely watch this time. Perfect continuation. Knowing me, meh. Bit dated.

TomPalmer

Knowing Me, Knowing You is good, but is a step down (and backwards) from I'm Alan Partridge. The character has appeared in many contexts - chat shows, web series, audio books, podcasts - but these two seasons of I'm Alan Partridge, plus the movie, are the most essential to watch. IMO anyway.

SJB

Knowing me Knowing You is very good but you don't have to go back and watch and it's pretty different to I'm Alan Partridge. Also should have a look at This Time with Alan Partridge which is a lot similar as he's hosting a chat show again

itswill 123

I'd stick with i'm AP. It's much better in my opinion and can be watched before. The 3 specials should be done at some point! They're the best of Partridge.

Jon

smell my cheese.
