Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is another - obviously was a radio series first.
The American ones seem to come much later but Red Dwarf was partly inspired by the movie Dark Star - especially in aesthetic.
The most famous American live action sci-fi series is Orville - the rest I can think of are animated or movies.

I've always thought that if a reboot was made (and currently totally possible, even concurrently with the Main Show still taking place, since Grant & Naylor settled their differences out of Court & came to the agreement that they can both make Red Dwarf media - and are planning to do so in their own way) that The Inbetweeners would be a great fit to take on the roles. They should do a multiverse type set up where just like in this plot, different people take on the characters, or even totally new characters find themselves on an alternate Red Dwarf where things happened slightly differently. However, it would be great to see how The Inbetweeners would portray these 4 xD.

Rick and Morty is great comedy sci-fi. Albeit, like you said, animated. The first several seasons were great.
