Only Fools and Horses S5 Ep6 "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" REACTION!

Good laughs and gut punches yet again.

Only Fools and Horses S5 Ep6 "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" REACTION!

Comments

Agree. Aussies and Brits are like close cousins. Different lives, but same values almost and jokes, humour, not getting offended and so on

Mark Rudd

Probably already been said, but yeh, jumbo is the same guy from the first series. Playing a different character but do obvious to see haha

Mark Rudd

lol no. you are wrong. from a person that is right ✅

TheHigh

He’s also not really Australian, just happens to play two Aussie characters in this

Kieran B

Australia is definitely closer to Britain in terms of personality and humour than the US. But like all nations made up of emigrants, the indigenous population notwithstanding, there are traits that make it similar to the US. Plus they have farms (stations) that make US ranches look small. Of the former settled colonies it’s something like this UK > New Zealand > Australia > Canada > USA. South Africa is a difficult one to fit in there as it has a much more complex history.

Kieran B

Boycie wasn’t introduced in the poker episode, he was introduced in episode 2, remember they bought the dodgy car off him and borrowed his E-Type Jaguar

Kieran B

Harry Enfield is in the 1 series then it gets better from series 2

Tony Bremner

Please do Men Behaving Badly. You'll love it 🤪

Chris Blackman

Who wants to be a millionaire by frank Sinatra is what del was quoting at the end, since the lyric is "who wants to be a millionaire?...I don't"

Matt Camburn

only foos is a mix of comedy, drama and serious emotion.. thats why its Britains best show. Once u get the feel of the characters, u really feel for them.

Jordan Lewis French

or not

Jordan Lewis French

Ye the opening theme is actually sung by John Sullivan he wanted Chas and Dave to sing it but they couldn't because of other projects but wanted to so badly they came back with a theme later and John put it as the end theme

Daryl Hudson

You should check out Rock and Chips. It’s a prequel with Jay from the inbetweeners playing Del Boy

Sean Grundy

That's right, the giant gong thing at the start of their movies.

Gary Mcatear

Keep up the good work mate. Hopefully you can get the unedited royal flush.

Andy Waller

America was a former British colony as well - the east coast anyway

Jehan Ariyaratnam

Yes there is a Christmas special which was shown after this series, back in 1986 I think, called 'A Royal Flush' in which the Trotter's meet the aristocracy. It is another bitter-sweet episode. There was a gap of 12 months, no series, before the next Christmas special in 1987 called 'The Frog's Legacy'. A further Xmas special in 1988, 'Dates' was immediately followed by Series 6 in January 1989.

Fordy7169

You've got 3 Chris specials, A Royal Flush, The Frogs Legacy and Dates then series 6 which starts with one of the most iconic moments in british TV history.

Neal Murdoch

J Arthur Rank was a British Movie Studio so you can imagine what that became rhyming slang for, hence Del calling Rodney a J Arthur.

Neal Murdoch

Boycie is certainly a character you love to hate. I think his and Del's friendship is like many, many of us have friends who have unattractive parts of their personality, but beneath it all they're still friends, for better or worse

Paul Draper

It's busters birthday today aka uncle Albert rest his soul

dubs

Yes that was Jumbo Mills as well but Del didn't recognise him because he hadn't heard him with an Australian accent yet

Jehan Ariyaratnam

Australia is a former British colony so its naturally more like the UK, it has less US influence compared to Canada. It does still have more US influence than NZ or the UK itself though. They have States and Sheriffs like the USA but most of their legal system is much closer to the UK.

Luke Barron

Don't like the next episode. Del boy comes off pretty mean spirited and purposely trying to ruin things.

Chris C

If you were shocked by Dels decision then you have not grasped what only fools and Horses is about. This is the best show by far. But the fact you miss these emotional scenes explains why it's not hands down your number 1

Andy Waller

King should react to uncle , and him and her ... if he's chance to .

Ashley Colton

I wonder if Rodney's window cleaning business was going to specialise in bungalows 😅

Jehan Ariyaratnam

You hit the nail on the head, thats why OFAH is loved so much. One off funny clips are ok but you have to know the context you have to know and believe the characters

Mike Doel

An Aussie will tell you the sense of humour is the same , so I’m guessing more UK

Mike Doel

I'd say Australia is more like the UK

Jman

The actor playing jumbo was in s1 ep2 also

Rob webber

A Royal Flush The Frogs Legacy Dates Then you hit the shows golden period with series 6 and 7! And can guarantee that you will shed a tear down the line 😊

AWR93

Australia more US. New Zealand more UK. From a kiwi 🥝

Kiwi Tau

As someone who's live in the UK most their life, but spent 6 years living in Australia, Australia is like a more chilled out US than the UK, however their sense of humour is more akin to the UK. It's actually a pretty decent balance of the two but they are generally more influenced by the US.

Tom Tucker

Hi king boomer, I not sure if you know, but the end credits/music theme is different to the opening theme. So far at the end of each show, I think you’ve just paused it before the credits so you may not have noticed, and so I thought I just let you know in case you wanted to hear them one time.

gabi_mac79

As there was only one writer for the show (John Sullivan), he probably came up with and jotted down ideas for storylines throughout the year, but thinking this was the last episode probably stopped doing that. So had very little to work with when the decision was reversed. I imagine it takes a couple of years from idea to script to filming and editing etc. Which may explain why there was a pause for a couple of years, and just Christmas Specials. Possibly Royal Flush was thrown together from a script idea of the planned spin off show. ‘Hot Rod’ which was supposed to pair Rodney with Micky Pearce.

Gary Tamblyn

The Bollingers joke, it’s an expensive brand of Champaign, although Del Boy mistakenly called it Dillingers, and said it was “Prince Charles’s favourite drink” Jumbo corrected him by saying, ‘No that’s Bollingers !”, Del Boy misinterpreted Bollingers as perhaps an Australian word for Bollocks or something. So thought Jumbo was saying “No that’s Bollocks” (No you’re talking rubbish). Which is why he reacted angrily with “It’s true I tell you !”

Gary Tamblyn

You sir, Are in for a treat! The show is very good up to this point but from now on in it really becomes exceptional. The writing is genius (RIP John Sullivan). Perfect mix between comedy and emotion. I'm gonna make a prediction... This show WILL become your favourite show, very soon!!! Enjoy the time with your family.

William Clark

This was originally planned as a final episode of the show. The end was them going off to Australia and becoming millionaires. However then John Sullivan and the BBC thankfully decided the show had more life in it and rewrote the ending

David Ridley

I lived in Australia for a while. It looks more similar to the states, but the people are much more like rowdy Brits as so many of them originate from there. Perth is majority British.

Lucy Thorpe

Definitely more like the UK for it's entire history to this day huge numbers of Brits move there every year.

Amy Sutton

I'm glad your at this point, it just gets better from here, you see more of everyone as well, you'll enjoy it even better as from now 😀. Also fun little fact the Australian in this episode is the same guy Del sold the clapped out bat mobile to in first season but played a different Australian.

Sam Deanz

There's 3 Xmas specials between this and the start of season 6. They are in order. 1) A Royal Flush - a bit of an anomaly of an episode, the writer went for a more dramatic tone but admits he got it completely wrong- still worth watching though, hopefully you see the full uncut episode and not the cut up one with a laugh track which was made to cover up for how badly the writer got it. Worth watching for the cringe 2) The Frogs legacy - classic episode and the first of the classic era of the show for me 3) Dates- you'll love this episode, in the top 5 of the whole show I reckon

Jehan Ariyaratnam

Only Fools And Orses

Steve Read

It’s three - there’s also “Dates” before series 6.

CraigRed

Totally agree. King Boomer has already spotted the brilliance of OFAH in being able to make you laugh one minute and emotional the next. But that really does ramp up from series 6 onwards.

CraigRed

I didn’t realise it was the same guy. Well spotted!

CraigRed

There were actually three Christmas specials at the end of Series 5 and before Series 6 went to air. They were as follows: A Royal Flush (1986) The Frog’s Legacy (1987) Dates (1988) The strange thing was - and I don’t know why this was - but Series 5 ended in October 1986 and Series 6 didn’t start until January 1989. Quite a long gap, during which three Christmases passed - hence three Christmas specials between Series 5 and Series 6. All three were excellent and the first episode of Series 6 (called Yuppy Love) contains probably the most iconic moment in Only Fools & Horses history (the chandelier falling is probably the second most iconic). I won’t spoil it by saying what happens but it’s brilliant.

CraigRed

Youre starting to enter the golden age of ofah, everything takes off like a rocket from here. All the best episodes are still to come

Chris Carter

This episode has some extra meaning to me because I emigrated to Australia from the UK when I was 26, went through all the same emotions Del and Rodney do here. Also had my car imported too and it had to go through all the things they talk about here. And Australia really does feel like a cross between the UK and America

Jehan Ariyaratnam

David Jason himself. He admitted it once during a interview with a newspaper, forget which one

Matt

Whilst I can not be as confident as you in things that David Jason has never said, my ability to watch shows about British comedy, understand the words being said and then recall them at a later date, means that I can be confident that David Jason was planning to leave OFAH.

Anthony Donegan

100% more UK. Formerly British colony with Australia literally a prison for the UK. People have theorized that their accent(s) comes from the original settlers being brit convicts who were drunk all the time.

Matt

Re: Brits moving to Australia/America. In the 70's & 80's there was a lot of poverty, unemployment and social unrest in Britain, and it was the post-empire period when there was quite a big identity crisis about what it meant to be British in the modern world. Places like Australia and America were almost seen as utopias where you could earn your fortune and live in luxury (which I'm sure worked out for some people, others maybe not). I mean, things aren't currently great here, but I think people are a lot more aware nowadays that no place is perfect and that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

AdamMcAdamface

He will have the specials dont worry

Craig McCulloch

My dad lived in Australia for a year, and he seems to think it's pretty much a 50/50 split between the UK and US. Admittedly that was 1981 so things are probably different now

I-Love-My-Brick

I’d say Australia is more like America, for sure.

Pee-Wee Stairmaster

Where do you all get the idea David Jason was going to leave he has said no such thing

Mark Parker

I lived in Australia for a year (admittedly as a gap year so I probably spent more time around pretentious British twats like Ben from the Inbetweeners 2 movie than Aussies). Culturally they are more similar to the UK in some ways (sport obviously, and I'd say a similar sense of humour, Aussies also like to swear, and take the piss, in a friendly way!). In other ways (films, TV generally) I'd say it's more based or at least influenced more by the USA than the UK. And of course Australia is a new world country and is also massive, so in terms of architecture and town/city layout it's a lot more similar to the USA.

AdamMcAdamface

When you watch the next episode, A Royal Flush, make sure to watch the unedited version without the laugh track. It's much better in my opinion. The episode gets a lot of flack because Del Boy is portrayed as uncharacteristically cruel, but for me it's one of the funniest episodes. A lot of cringe to look forward to!

Jurgen Fellows

It makes me laugh that 99% of Americans genuinely cannot tell the difference between a British and an Australian accent. But that's 99% of Americans for you. Well done for not being one of them.

Alan

which made the lines "people always turn to us when the country goes downhill" so brilliant :)

The Everything Guy

Aussies are way more culturally similar than Americans on the whole

Craig McCulloch

I'm one of the few that really likes A Royal Flush. It has some of Delboys best lines in it. Edit: the Aussie guy in this episode also played the Aussie in the series 1 episode Go West Young Man, as the guy who bought the clapped out Cortina.

Steve Read

Love Uncle Albert’s reply to “I’m not bald”. “Well, that’s a hell of a parting you’ve got there son !” 😂 This was going to be the final show, as the actor that played Del Boy wanted to do other things. However, after reflecting on the show’s popularity and how many people it would put out of work if he left, he thankfully decided to continue. As a result the next Special, which I think had to be written quickly, wasn’t up to the usual standard IMHO (although a lot of people love it) and the Series sort of took a break after Season 5, but they recorded 3 Christmas specials to keep things alive. 1) A Royal Flush - Dec 1986 2) The Frog’s Legacy - Dec 1987 3) Dates - Dec 1988 Season 6 Starts just after that in Jan 1989 (they’re all a bit older). Each episode from then onwards is about 50 minutes long instead of 30 minutes.

Gary Tamblyn

Hey KB, just a heads up, the next episode, a royal flush is infamous for being the worst ever OFAH episode. They had alot of cast illnesses and had to really rush to get it on air, to the point where it was being edited the mornong of airing. Even the writer dislikes it. Thankfully they bounce back with The Frogs Legacy.

Michael Tong

You could try intermittent fasting to shift the lbs. I generally do 18/6 or 20/4. Works every time for me.

Martin N

David Jason had said he had wanted to leave the show so this episode was written to give Rodney a spin off show where he would run the company, David Jason changed his mind so the ending was rewritten and he didn't go to Australia

Jaxon's Jerseys

More similar to the UK (I'm British). I'd say Australian people would identify culturally more closely to Brits than Americans, but there are some aspects of Australia, eg cars & houses, that are more similar USA than UK.

Alan

Series 6 is where I think the show really comes into its own. You've got some all-timer episodes ahead of you and that balance of comedy and emotion that you always appreciate is so beautifully handled in a lot of them. I'm really enjoying revisiting this great show with you.

Henry Graham

I think Australia is more similar to the uk

Matt Wells

King Boomer you ain't seen nothing yet and you will get very emotional in later on episodes then you'll definitely know why OFAH is the UKs no 1 show of all time 😊

Luke Fisher

All I'll say is get ready to be embarrassed then mate. There are episodes that still make me tear up and I've watched OFAH dozens and dozens of times

Simon Westerman

Yes, as others have said, three specials after this one. This episode was broadcast in 1986, then it's A Royal Flush (Xmas 86), Frog's Legacy (Xmas 87), and Dates (Xmas 88). Series 6 didn't begin until January 1989. Incidentally, this episode was the last ever 30 minute one.

Joshua

I think the reason Del drinks cocktails is because back in those days to drink cocktails was a sign of wealth, and Del loves to pretend to be rich!! 😂

Matt Wells

There are 3 specials after this 1, A Royal Flush 2, The Frogs Legacy 3, Dates

jack

When you've got a lot of money wrapped around you, and people know about it, and you're sitting in a big house, you're a massive target. If you live in a £5m + house in London, it's only a matter of time before a violent gang comes through your doors and does some twisted stuff to you. With an apartment, you have security on the ground floor and no one knows which floor you're on or which apartment you're in.

Kilo

Love that shirt haha.

Steve Read

I'm sure you will be shedding a tear in some of the future episodes. Really ramps up from season 6. You haven't seen anything yet!

Nick Davis

You're a dad now dude, you're meant to have a gut!! Don't worry about it 👍

Matt Wells

more similar to the UK i'd say (as long as the weather isnt included for comparison )

Bikeaholic

2 Xmas specials after season 5. A royal flush and the frogs legacy. Then onto season 6.

Leigh Hughes

Take up smoking, it works wonders. I gave up smoking and got fat, so it's scientifically proven to work.

Alan

I believe this was originally meant to be the last ever episode. David Jason (Del Boy) had decided he wanted to leave. So the plan was for him to go off to Australia, bringing an end to OFAH. There was then going to be a spin off staring Rodney, going into business with Mickey Pearce. Anyway, during filming, David Jason changed his mind, and the end was rewritten - meaning that the series continued - which is just as well as I still think the best episodes are yet to come!

Anthony Donegan

That’s a hell of a parting you got 🤣

AWR93

Family, the most important thing to the trotters. Australians are basically the same as British people in mentality and humour, Americans are nothing like either. Australia is like Britain's funny uncle where as America is our snobby cousin who thinks there better than everyone else even though we know they came from the same shit hole as we all did.
