But even with the bigger budget for Series 3, back in the 80's and 90's BBC shows were on an incredibly small budget in comparison with shows from the States. As an example, when Red Dwarf first aired the actor playing Lister was only being paid £600 per episode. The BBC SFX unit were geniuses at creating decent effects on a tiny budget, so even if it looks ropey by today's standards it was a miracle how they did a lot of this stuff with next to no money.

2023-08-21 07:10:18 +0000 UTCAside from Kryten, they also managed to figure out what to do with Cat's character. In the first two series all Cat did was dancing and making jokes about his appearance and costumes, and never really got involved in the main storyline.
