Adam Hale

That ‘get over it’ speech gets me every time, even though I know it’s coming. Genius writing of OFAH

Ominous

Yeah he sadly passed away. There’s pics of him filming series 4 then had to refilm and cast. Then they filmed this shortly after his real funeral. You probably know all this by now anyway haha

Justyn

Holy crap...when Trig pulls the fags out of his pocket, one of the boxes looks like purple silk cut...thats a blast from the past.

David O'Halloran

Smoking a fag has a completely different meaning in America lolol

Gary Mcatear

You will not get better than Grandad

Mark Parker

Loved grandad...but uncle Abert is simply better. Or had the better writing. He boxed for the royal navy ya know 🤣. And actually impregnated half of France as we find out much later on..apparently he's stories weren't all porkies 🤣

Sam Vimes

They filmed the burial the day after the funeral of the actor Lennard Pearce.

Neal Murdoch

Bernard amatthews is a brand of cheap turkeys. The Belgrano was an Argentine ship famously sunk in The Falklands war.

Neal Murdoch

John Sullivan was a great writer, make you laugh one minute and cry the next. Loving the shirt too man, Yellowstone is one of my favourite shows atm

Joe

Death and birth are the two most common things in this world… really don’t know why people make a big deal about it still

Ricky

Also its funny you mention the wallpaper being different, if you look around you'll see their furniture changes often too. This is done to emphasise them being traders who will buy and sell anything to make a profit, even their furniture (from directors interview)

Chevy

The joke where Del boy says he feels like a turkey thats just seen Bernard Mathews grinning at him, Bernard Mathews is a food company that make frozen turkey twizzlers and other turkey based frozen foods

Chevy

Yeah, sadly Leonard Pearce passed away during filming the fourth season. They filmed Grandad's funeral just days after the actors actual funeral. Grandad is much missed. Uncle Albert is a great character though, he never feels like an inferior replacement.

SJB

This is the best sitcom ever made!!

Matt Wells

Albert is hilarious when he gets settled in to the show, he was definitely the perfect replacement

paul wylie

I wouldn't say he's better but he is definitely great. Grandad was also great in his own way though.

Luke Barron

I think part of the reason their sadness was so genuine in this episode is that it was real grieving and not just acting. Leonard Pierce who plays Grandad really did die and they were all naturally close with each other given all their previous time together.

Luke Barron

'Quills' is a wicked film! When you list 'The Changeling' , I take it you mean the 1980 Peter Medak directed, George C. Scott classic..? Not the Angelina Jolie shit?

Rob Walters

Just to clue you up KB: Boots is a chain of chemists shops in England. The Belgrano was an Argentinian ship which we (The British Army) sunk during the Falklands war in 1982 and Zeberdee was a character with a spring for legs in the kids show, 'The Magic Roundabout'. Film suggestions: Let Him Have It (1991), Elizabeth (1998), Rita, Sue and Bob Too! (1986), Goodbye Charlie Bright (2001), Scum (1979), The Long Good Friday (1981), The Business (2004), Nil By Mouth (1996), Carry On series (1958 - 1976), Paperhouse (1988),

Rob Walters

I love Uncle Albert. So much better than grandad. Although I do love Grandad too.

Andy Waller

Your new nickname boomerang 🪃 boomer you always come back. KBB

Bubbles

Aw Callie is such a sweet lady, I’m so glad her and your little one are feeling better x

Erica

It's only taken up to this video and near on 20 years watching only fools to realise that when Mike mentions that his cigarette machine got stolen and the sonic burglar alarm. It's trigger as at the wake Tigger gets out all them fags and then del says as mike's leaving that trigger knows where he can get another burglar alarm , you learn something new every day.

Rob Green

Great to see you back KB, and glad that QB is doing well. With regards to Only Fools, no one will ever replace Grandad.. But uncle Albert does an amazing job of filling the role, he's brilliant.

So pleased to hear Queen Boomer is on the mend! You’re going to love Uncle Albert, he’s such an important character that it’s hard to imagine Only Fools without him. I think why this show resonates so much with people as it resembles real life and you can relate to everything. Heartache and all, it really shows the ups and downs of life with some great fun in between! I look forward to the next one 👍

Stephen Giles

all the best mate

Aidan McGarrigle

For me, the rest of S4 drops off a little bit in quality as the writers and actor's try and find their feet again after grandads passing but S5 goes up another level and we see some of the all time classic moments... It just takes few episodes for Uncle and the rest of the cast to gel but by S5, they are back on it again and even surpass most previous seasons.

BigChanChan

Alot of Del and Rodney's best acting was in this episode because there was real emotion behind It after he actually passed away. I remember watching a documentary about this episode years ago, they did that emotional scene in one take, no cuts.

bdazzer85

Nice to see you back KB, and great to hear QB ia doing better too

Fozzie Bear

Glad to hear QB is doing better bud

Mike Doel

Your right KB that is what makes this show so great

Mike Doel

After this episode you start to get a real established and coherent flow to the show as well as the characters. Each character really does come into their own now and there are some fab additions to the cast. Also the characters that felt like "bit" players before, all take on a bigger role in the show. So glad you love it. OFAH can only be described as a British comedy backbone. It's an institution in itself which is a huge testament to John Sullivan.

Clare Hollylee

You had the same reaction as pretty much everyone at the time. In fact Buster Merryfield (Uncle Albert) said in an interview that he was so nervous about replacing Lennard Pierce (Grandad) especially in front of a live audience that he kept messing up his lines. So he said David Jason (Del Boy) would purposely mess up his own lines to make him feel better.

Brendan

It’s the comedy mixed with the pathos that separates the show from all the other comedy shows.

Rob Palmer

did you not realise that trigger had obviously stole the fags from the pub and bernard matthews was the founder of Bernard Matthews Farms, a company that is best known for producing turkey meat products

Daryl Hudson

For me, as much as I liked Grandad as a character, the show improves a lot with Uncle Albert. Nothing to do with the characters, just the overall show

Chris Silverthorne

And you will come to love uncle Albert too but just very differently

charlie wright

Buster Merryfield, who was Uncle Albert, had only become a professional actor in his fifties and had spent most of his adult life as a bank manager in Surrey, this was his first (and last) major television role.

Charlie

Been waiting for this episode

charlie wright

🤣🤣🤣

Matthew Pike

Leonard was a great actor his last filmed epsiode was in Thicker than Water and had a heart attack while they where filming for season 4, he got better but not long after he died of another heart 3 days later 15 December 1984. He was a heavy smoker for many years and probably one of the main reasons for the heart attack. RIP grandad and Leonard. None fun fact my ex crush dated a lookalike of Buster Merryfield Uncle Albert and ever since then I went ACE and never looked back so got Buster to thank for that :D. On that note while it's hard to move past Grandad, Albert comes into his own and you will love him as much as Grandad since he was in pretty much every episode until the show ended. Also RIP John Sullivan 2011 one of the best TV wrighters that ever lived who also wrought Green, Green Crass with Boycie (John Challis) and Rock and chips, Only Fools spin off with ironically James Buckley as Del Boy and Nicholas Lyndhurst but not as Rodney but as Robdal. a 3 epsidoe spin off I have never watched as yet.

Matt Thomas

I went to the states in 2012, was at Newark Airport and waiting on a connecting flight. I went over to the security guy and said "is it OK if I go out for a fag?" And he gave me a total confused look and said "you want to go outside for a homosexual??" I was absolutely mortified! Hahaaha

Ross stewart

Nice to see you, hope all is well.

Nothinghalo

Quite a few of the older British sitcomes had a similar mix of comedy and poignant moments. Porridge, and One Foot in the Grave spring to mind. Also Steptoe & Son, that's a very old comedy (early 1960's) but I think it was the first sitcom to cast serious actors in the lead roles rather than traditional comedians.

AdamMcAdamface

Perhaps lets not look at it as "replacing", but just "different, yet still funny".

Phil Robinson

Not much else to add really - a wonderful episode and a perfect example of how John Sullivan works with pathos. The main characters are all so well defined now, and the cast are firing on all cylinders, that he can get away with certain things that might not have been available to him earlier. That "hat" gag was an absolute peach - utter genius writing. It's a terribly sad start to the episode, but with such a funny and heart-warming punchline it's hard not to be completely on board with it. This style also works very well in some of his other sitcoms, such as "Dear John", which is another of my favourites of his - but that's for another time.

Phil Robinson

You will will love uncle Albert is brilliant, this episode still waters my eyes knowing they buried grandad for real a week or two before this

Michael Oliver

Uncle Albert does a great job at replacing Grandad, you'll soon love him!

Steve G

The Belgrano was a Argentinian ship (formerly a US battle cruiser in WW2) that was sunk by a British submarine in the Falklands war, Hence the term "he was entertainments officer on the Belgrano".

Matthew Pike

Not sure if you know this, but in the UK, “faggot” is also a type of meat. My cousin came over from South Africa to visit once, and he found it hilarious when he saw a sign at the food market saying “Black Country faggots sold here” 😂 Ohh, and stick with Uncle Albert! As brilliant as Grandad was, Uncle Albert is legendary! One of the best characters ever!

Lee Organ

RIP grandad

AWR93

This is such a great episode, especially when you consider how it had to be quickly written to compensate for Leonard Pierce's death. It has some beautiful, heartfelt moments while still being extremely funny, and it introduces a new character who instantly becomes an integral part of the show for years to come. A brilliant piece of writing from John Sullivan.

Henry Graham

Welcome back. Yes its grandads replacement for grandad the actor lenoard Pearce suddenly passed away. However..... I know its hard at first to get used to a new character replacement of a great character but uncle albert is great. There's this on going debate who is better grandad or uncle albert and most prefer uncle albert as I do too. These are the 3 faces of only fools. Uncle albert is a current meme too "during the war" For the record... Bernard Matthews is a famous butcher.

Charlie Costa

We use fag for the other meaning Aswell 😂😂

Michael Oliver

This is one of those heavy episodes emotionally, later on the series "Little problems" and "Modern men" have a couple of those moments too, but they're much later on. You've got a fair bit to get through first!

Jehan Ariyaratnam

As much as granddad was a great character and the original, uncle Albert is even funnier imo and ends up playing a bigger role.

Jehan Ariyaratnam

According to Nicholas Lyndhurst, Leonard Pearce met and shook hands with Hitler at an event in Germany before WWII, what a story that must have been to tell!

Jon

Sorry for your loss

Brian Moran

So glad you're back! I've had a shitty week too, because a family member died last week. Kind of poetic for me that this funeral episode is your first one back.

UltiNega

It was only the week before they they buried leonard for real, this is such a pivotal episode not just because we lose Grandad and inherit Uncle Albert his brother but we see the mastery of Sullivan, his ability to grab your heart strings and then give you a comic relief also from that heartache. We see the great actor that is David Jason doing his craft. This for me is where Only fools really finds it's feet as do the actors finally find there personalities for the charecters and can act it blindfolded , the only fools family is nearly complete and we have some of thee best episodes ever coming. You lucky lucky bastard Boomer. The Bernard Matthews line is a classic line, sadly there will be so many references you won't understand, I wish you would be as there hilarious but it's just a culture thing, Bernard Matthews is a charecter of a brand of sliced ham or chicken/turkey. Also you mentioned the wallpaper, it's a running joke that each week the Trotters flat changes, be it the sofas or the junk they are trying to sell that week piled up in boxes and other scenery changes too. Uncle Albert is a millions times better than Grandad I personally think and as stated the episodes from now on are so much funnier than previous ones.

Phoenix

Producer John Sullivan at his very best writing this episode and the rest of the cast carrying on acting after the death of much loved actor Lennord Pearce (grandad) 🙂

Luke Fisher

Welcome back dude!👌
