I just realized, right at the end in his last scene than Bernard Cribbins' character had a Hitler 'tash. What the fuck's that all about?

Joe Thornhill

John got the inspiration for Basil from a guy who ran a hotel. Who is very much like Basil. Something on the lines of that..x

Mammy Belle

Bernard Cribbins was a legend.

Neal Murdoch

this one was funny he really hated that guy lol

Borstal system, English reformatory system designed for youths between 16 and 21, named after an old convict prison at Borstal, Kent. The system was introduced in 1902 but was given its basic form by Sir Alexander Paterson, who became a prison commissioner in 1922.

Daryl Hudson

Bortsal was pretty horrific, just a prison for kids and it was rough, very rough, I nearly got sent to one and the thought was terrifying! Back in the 70's if you got arrested for a minor crime as a child they'd caution you, if you had two cautions and you got arrested for a third time you were charged with a very high risk of being sent to Borstal. I was arrested, already with 2 cautions and managed to get away with it as my headmaster in school acted as my character witness, luckily because I worked hard in school and did well in exams I was given one last chance, and haven't broken the law since. I'm pretty sure in some of your movie reactions I've seen people recommend the film 'SCUM', this was a 1979 film about life inside Borstal, it's considered a real classic of British cinema, a great film. Bernard Cribbins who played the spoon salesman was a much loved actor, a real gem, he passed away last year RIP.

Mark Jones

rip Bernard cribbins

John Cleese only wrote 12 episodes and said he would never do anymore as he just couldn't get them to that higher standard and would rather finish the show with 12 greats than how ever many with some terrible ones

Jay D

โ€œJuvyโ€ for short yes.

Brian Moran

Closest US approximation for Borstal would be โ€œjuvenile hallโ€ I suppose?

Chug

Fawlty towers was actually based on a real hotel in torquay called the Gleneagles Hotel. Also basil's character was near enough a copy of the owner aswell, with his nutty character and mad mood swings. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Borstal used to be the name of Young Offenders institutes, they are basically a less dangerous version of prison for under 18 year olds, because obviously they can't be put into regular prisons for their safety, but if they are still serving their sentence when they turn 18 then they will be moved to a regular adult prison.

JokerDanny

Borstal is a custodial institution for young offenders

Amanda

Beat me to it lol

David fallows

You were... screaming at people... on the beach? We all like Super Hans, but please don't develop a crack habit.

Z is for Zed

I think bordstal is where young offenders would go so a little like a prison I might be wrong though. Think it was a detention centre.

David fallows

A borstal is/was a youth detention centre. I guess that's what we now call a YOI (youth offenders institute)?
