You hear a lot about what a "rich city" it is, but what that really means is that it has a high concentration of super rich residents. I think there are even studies which rank London in general as the most unequal city in the developed world.

Peckham, like much of London, is now rapidly gentrifying, but there are still some pretty grim places; there's inordinate wealth, but also staggering poverty, and there are parts of east London where the levels of inequality are comparable to cities in South Africa or Brazil. But that's a discussion for another day.

It's always mentioned that Brit comedies take time to get going, but most fans of these shows tend to discover them during their peak episodes, which is why the UK television networks used to allow them space to grow. Had the UK followed the US model of dropping comedies immediately if they don't perform, we'd not have classics like Only Fools, Red Dwarf and Peep Show. I've always appreciated that level of patience the Brits used to have over comedy, but I think these days we're less forgiving. Probably because of the wealth of things available to watch.
