This Is England (2006) MOVIE REACTION!

A very powerful film that reminded me of American History X in some ways.  STEPHEN GRAHAM NEEDS MORE LEADING ROLES!!!

This Is England (2006) MOVIE REACTION!

Comments

Brilliant film that, was at a loose end this evening and looked in to the movie reactions I missed, incredible performance from Stephen Graham, as you say a very underrated actor. Was a decent enough job of portraying 80's England, but not quite as good as some other films and TV shows of the time, in my humble opinion. I will have to look into the series now, excellent soundtrack too, loved the end track as the film concluded.

Dave L

The actor for Shaun was 14 but puberty hadn't hit the poor lad yet

Joshua Pickford

The Falklands have never belonged to Argentina and the people who have lived there have always wanted to remain part of Britain.

Anglan

Thatcher was due to lose the upcoming election. The Falklands war saved her skin. Dubious timing if you ask me.

Martyn Dawson

‘86, ‘88 & ‘90 next!

Paul

I know I’m VERY late here 😂 but admittedly smell looks much older the Shaun which makes it look creepy when they do stuff. He’s 12 and she’s actually only 14 so it’s not THAT awful 😂

Tommy Dawkins

You need to watch all 3 series aswell it delves deeper into the characters

Liam Cooke

Stephen Graham is in loads of stuff, he just isn't in many Hollywood films, and at times Mr Graham has been quite bad in some roles. I think he has a limited range, he's good at rage, anger etc... not so hot in other roles. He played a Welsh detective a few years back, he was dreadful.

Henry Normal

"Crazy Speech", but it was the beginning of Brexit, and guess who won.

Henry Normal

Spoilt for me by King Boomers ridiculous comments about the Falklands. Many Brits were against the Falklands War for various reasons, Islas Malvinas belong to Argentina.

Henry Normal

I see a lot of comments recommending the series. I disagree. I thought the film was amazing. The best part of this franchise is what you watched here. The TV series was a let down for me. Probably because of the many limitations TV shows have compared to movies. But in my opinion, This is England ended after this film. But as always, to each their own.

Mike Currie

Need to do the series . This is just how I rember the 80s Steven Graham is in lots ov great uk dramas . Definitely one ov our best actors along with Daniel mays . Both great

Dango247

I always thought Shaun kissing Smell was really weird, even when I first saw the film as a young teenager. She seemed way too old.

Michael May

oh and just to add you need to watch the this is england tv series, it carries on from the film and has all the cast returning and goes much deeper and has a lot of dark scenes

Dave Jones

I just realized today after watching this again that woody also played cassidy in the preacher tv series

Dave Jones

You need to watch the series that followed. This is England 90 is especially great

Barnaby dewhurst

Please continue the saga 'This is England' '86, '88 & '90. You really must follow their lives after this brutal event.

Jason Bonner

We used to smash things up in the early eighties like that we called it demolition derby

Mark Parker

The woman from the shoe shop is now Stephen Graham's wife, they met on the set of this film and he's said in interviews that he is dyslexic and she helps him choose his scripts

Zombie793

I really would recommend carrying on with This is England 86. It's a continuation of the story done as a series with the same characters and same actors.

hfdzongkha

First thing he ever acted in too

YerDaSellsAvon

it's not a spoiler

Lydia

Why include a spoiler?

Brad

Surely he needs to do 86 and 88 first.

Brad

Milky didn't die. He's in the series u shld def watch them. Just to warn u the first series is very dark but still brilliant

Lydia

Need to do this is England 90s now!

Rob Green

You got to watch the rest of the series. Please. 😊

Kunnar Hea

Combo says the P word which is a racial slur against south asian people - indians or pakistanis for example but anyone who's south asian. It comes from the word Pakistan obvs but it's like the uk's n word. It's really bad

Lydia

yes the first series especially is very very shocking in parts and upsetting but it's worth watching as the overall show is so good

Lydia

just a warning if you do end up watching the This is england series, its incredibly good, will probably change your outlook on life and is very very dark at times. ive just binged watched them all after watching this. Stephen Graham is acting gold. he brought me to tears many times during this series.

The Everything Guy

Theres not just a refresher course theres a song ! About what happened in the Falklands

George Allott

Follow up with this, don’t want to spoil it is to do with combo and milky: https://youtu.be/nGkskJhcCAs

Brandinio

Stephen Graham is one of the best actors on the planet. He's up there with the greats

Lee T

I didn't know that

Sorry not sorry

Wrong. Brexit happened for different reasons. But continue on with your binary thinking.

Stephen Prince

Sharon Turgoose is Shaun's real mum

Rhys Jones

I'm not one to advocate for a reactor to rematch something but I think Chernobyl reaction would be riveting

Lee T

Worth knowing that since this film Stephen Graham's character's mindset on foreigners became much more mainstream & common and essentially that's why Brexit happened. Shocking really.

Chorlton Outlaw

Man I wish queen boomer was there to watch it with you, better when it's both of you, gotta respect the busy bee though haha

Sorry not sorry

Ggggaaassssp!!! Fuck yes, I love this film. It's brutal but real.

Ross

Maybe he was talking historically, go back 500 years and Wales and England were pretty much considered the same country, known as England, for quite some time. only teasing btw, I'm Welsh too! 😁

Mark Jones

Can't end it on the film, need to watch all 3 series now when you get chance

Aaron

Stephen Graham is a great actor - this film is all the proof you need

Craig McCulloch

He was 12, and she was 15, still uncomfortable, but not as bad as it actually looks.

Lester Sands

Talking over 'UK Subs' is an actual crime! We love you Charlie Harper!

Lester Sands

Great reaction KB.Only problem is it was the UK at war in the Falklands not England.I live in Wales,a different country to England, and Welsh soldiers fought as well.

Ian ‘Flinty’ Flintham

Really hope you do the this is england series.

James

Totally agree I love seeing how the characters develop

Lauren Massey

I'm so glad Queen didn't watch the dating Scenes between Smell and Shaun. I think King Boomer would be in trouble for exposing her to that 😆

Lee T

The series is great as well.

Ian ‘Flinty’ Flintham

Actually I just remembered I'm sure you said your favourite film was Gladiator, so I guess you might have watched Romper Stomper as it stars a young Russell Crowe

Mark Jones

This film breaks my heart, I was 13 in the era when this film was shot, a working class kid growing up on a council estate in Maggie Thatcher's 80's Britain, she did so much damage to this nation as she never ever understood or respected the working classes. We had nothing financially but our society and culture was rich, we knew all our neighbours, I started the 80's as a Mod, then was an Indie kid, then finished the decade as an Anarcho-Punk, skinheads, nazi-punks and the National Front were and always will be a blight to our nation, in the early 90's I became a member of the Anti-Nazi league which was set up to oppose the rise of the NF and one particularly scary group at the time called Combat 18, great reaction, this is a powerful movie, I'd highly recommend you now watch Romper Stomper, a story of the Aussie skinheads and another very powerful film.

Mark Jones

Sharon Turgoose was Shaun's mum in real life, she was dying of cancer while this film was being shot, she died before she got to see the finished film, the director Shane Meadows promised the actor Thomas Turgoose who played Shaun that he's dedicate the film to his mums memory, Jo Hartley who played Shaun's mum in the film was also excellent in Ricky Gervais's most recent sitcom 'After Life'.

Mark Jones

Dead man's shoes is an absolute belta

TICKLE-MA-TACO

I recommend the movie yardie, Stephen Graham is in it and I think you’ll love his role in yardie lol. It’s also just a great movie in general good story

RJ

The following ‘This is England’ series is so good, would highly recommend it! It’s pretty heavy, but so well done with so much in so little episodes. Shane meadows is probably my favourite somewhat unknown director, like recommended above, I’d really recommend Dead Man’s Shows - Very good movie again with Paddy Considine as the leading role, another dime of an actor who isn’t appreciated anywhere near enough, Shane Meadows is really good at finding underrated talent it seems

ChazWalker

if u liked the movie u should defo check out the tv series if u wanted see where the story went

dubs

Agreed. One of the most underrated British films!

Aaron Page

This is going to be a heavy watch, I took a bunch of ecstasy at the weekend for my bday now I'm on a comedown.

Caine

Oh and you like the Irish Father Ted so check out Derry Girls

Yaapsdad

That's enough for half a lifetime🤣

Yaapsdad

It's Quadrophenia, but yes, it's a great movie. The rest of your list is good too, Charlie. Also, check out the series of This is England and any of the other Shane Meadows films (eg. Dead Man's Shoes). Any films by Mike Leigh (eg. Naked and Meantime) or Ken Loach (eg. Kes) and comedies by Bill Forsyth (eg. Gregory's Girl, Local Hero) as well as other British gangster films, which are not cartoonish like Guy Ritchie's films like The Long Good Friday, Get Carter, and Mona Lisa. Any Ealing Comedies, for example, The Ladykillers, Passport to Pimlico, The Lavender Hill Mob, Whisky Galore! and Kind Hearts and Coronets. But definitely not the remakes. The Italian Job, A Fish called Wanda, Sightseers, In the Loop (and the series The Thick of It), Jabberwocky, The Carry On series of movies, the Pink Panther movies, Wallace and Gromit films, Arsenic and old lace, The Death of Stalin, Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different (the best of the TV series sketches, redone on film and put together), Submarine, Restless Natives, and Comrades (very long, but one of my favourites). Also, check out the absolute classic sitcoms Dad's Army, Porridge, The Young Ones, and Phoenix Nights and the comedy series The League of Gentlemen and a Rik Mayall classic, The New Statesman.

Yaapsdad

I was around the same age as Shaun in the 80's maybe a little younger, what I can remember the film has got the feel of the time just right. Watching this film again through this reaction brings home so much more emotions and memories from my childhood growing up! Thanks for sharing such an amazing film, great to see some of the fun side of British T.V./Film but great to see the more serious / social history side to us weird Brits too.

David Hunter

Kes is amazing Proper Yorkshire film I do like scum aswell And you can’t go wrong with Quadraphina

Andrew Bojas

British Classics that doesn't seem to get mentioned here. 15 absloute belters. 1. KES 2. RITA SUE AND BOB TOO. 3. EAST IS EAST 4. GOODBYE CHARLIE BRIGHT. 5. NIL BY MOUTH 6 TO LOVE HONOUR AND OBEY 7. THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY 8. QUADRAPHINA 9 NOTTING HILL 10. SCUM 11. DEAD MANS SHOES 12. FEVER PITCH 13. THE BUISNESS 14. THE RISE OF THE FOOT SOLDIERS 15. THE FULL MONTY

Charlie Costa

You should checkout Cemetry Junction

SomeBSName

American History X has great performances and powerful moments, but the filmmaking is flawed because the production was chaotic as fuck. This film is perfect in terms of execution, because it's one talented guy's vision at the peak of his powers.

Louis Hessey-Antell

Would love to see you watch 'A Room for Romeo Brass' next. It's my favourite Shane Meadows film and also features a younger Milky.

Grainy

I echo the recommendations to watch Dead Man's Shoes, fantastic film by the same director. And if you ever get chance, it's worth watching the TV series' This is England 86/88/90 to see the rest of the This is England story

Patrick Coyle

Wrote some down whilst watching He said Mong, short for Mongoloid, originally was used as a term for people with Down Syndrome as "they looked mongoloin". Then became an all insult term for people with learning difficulties and then like how americans used retard, became a general insult like idiot Regarding how they made it look like the 80's, they used poor areas especially up north which haven't been funded to move with the times. That and other common movie magic tricks Wog, yeah first just a term for black person but then became racial insult. Think it comes from "Golliwog" which was a ministrel toy sold in UK/Europe back in the day I think you knew him as Dog from Lock Stock or maybe Football Factory if you've seen it? Shaun supposed to be 12. Surprised as you're fan of RSK, you didn't noticed Smell was Warwick's assistant from Life Too Short I know it's been recommended but you should check out other Shane Meadows films like Dead Man Shoes. It's got Paddy Considine. Don't read into it! The TV series based on the follow up years of This Is England are pretty good too but imagined you are chocoblock with reactions of shows already.

Matt

and dead mans shoes, my favourite movie of all time with paddy considine

trickster

you have to watch the 3 series too and watch everyone grow and see it come full circle

trickster

Wasn’t snatch his first film

Mark Parker

Don’t blame the flag the guy in the meeting is right saying I’m a Englishman does feel forbidden I’m British but I’m English first enough of that I loved car washing to get a bit of money and it does look like it was in the 80s

Mark Parker

now you have to react to the tv series of the same name which stretches out the story a bit more and from where the film leaves off

tricky D77

Every time I revisit this, I am convinced that is the greatest performance by a child actor of all time.

Louis Hessey-Antell

The guy you recognised is Frank Harper. He was in Lost Stock and Kevin and Perry.

Pee-Wee Stairmaster

Yeah please watch Dead man's shoes, it's far better than the other things that are commonly requested.

David Williams

Thank you for reacting to this! I love that you have respect for sensitive subject and you give things the attention they deserve.

Lauren Massey

the little kid Shaun was actually 13 when they filmed this is England

Bubbles

Another vote for Dead Man's Shoes here.... Paddy Considine is INCREDIBLE in it.... And it's another Shane Meadows movie.... It's a must watch!

Anthony Mark Taylor

He was so good in that! Jodie Comer was also amazing

Lauren Massey

Dead Man's Shoes is by the same director and stars the great Paddy Considine. But don't read anything about it first, just watch it blind and it's so much better.

Ewan

Stephen Graham is by far the best British actor working today. Everything he’s in is amazing and he’s always the best in it. He’s got an OBE on his mum’s birthday recently - a proper down to earth lad with the biggest talent who’s not taking for granted his well-earned billing next to the likes of Al Pacino and Leonardo DiCaprio in various movies.

Sam Dilks

I hope you react to the following series

Jason

Dead man’s shoes next !!

Miles Holt

Balls of steel is a stupidly funny series also, extremely daft but laugh out loud, essentially. Basically different people trying to out dare the other one doing stupid things, who was the biggest balls, hence the name, 'balls of steel'

Mr Matthews

to clarify, his mum in real life, not the lady that played shauns mum. Bad wording from me.

Matt Camburn

Sharon Turgoose was Shaun's (Thomas Turgoose) mum, she died a year before this movie released

Matt Camburn

Billy Elliot, 4 lions and and east is east are 3 films I'd have on your radar, they are all classics in the UK

Mr Matthews

Was a great change from the normal comedies, it's good to see you react to darker things on occasion. There is 3 series's of this is England all brilliant, I'd actually argue the series are better... Again though it's of the same tone. There's plenty of funny stuff to watch on this patreon if people need something more light hearted after watching this. Variety is the spice of life, I enjoyed the change

Mr Matthews

Great shout

Mr Matthews

Wow well done for reacting to this Amazing film. One of my favourites. I haven’t watched the reaction yet But also maybe consider watch the series aswell Sorry if you mentioned doing that in the reaction

Andrew Bojas

First time I got round to seeing this film. I had a relative that was killed by a land mine during the Falklands war. Like others, would love to see Dead Man's shoes reaction sometime, or a comedy called Brassic which stars the actor who played Woody in this film

Peter Andrews

If you enjoyed this one, there's another film called "Billy Elliot" which is made in much of the same vain (culture, era, conflict etc). It's one of my favourite British movies.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

lol your reaction with the tit sucking comment LOL welcome to England 80s style 🤣

Bubbles

grate movie the series are just as good. the boy called the shop keeper a MONG.

Bubbles

Dead Mans Shoes next I would say

Pete Owen

The guy has a very impressive body of work now especially UK Dramas. He’s rated very highly

Jonroon93

Your reaction to the 9 old kid getting some action was hilarious. That was pretty uncomfortable to watch tbh. You missed that when he walked in afterwards, he was getting people to sniff his fingers...

Jehan Ariyaratnam

Stephen Graham is one of UK’s most underrated actors. He was in a channel four film about Covid in a care home, he played someone with early dementia. A fantastic performance. The film was called “Help”.

John M Whalen

Stephen Graham was underrated for a long time but in the last few years, especially in the UK, he’s been getting his fair dues IMO. From this and the This Is England series, Boiling Point, The Virtues and Time. The guy’s been fantastic and more casual audiences are recognising him.

Mark Fraser

Bet this movie cheered you up, watch Dead man's shoes to take the edge off😂.
